NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Edmonton Oilers: 2020 fifth-round pick Ty Tullio will begin the season playing for MHk 32 Liptovsky Mikulas of the Slovak Extraliga.

BLH’s Thoughts: Great news! He’ll have a teammate from Oshawa joining him (Allan McShane), so he won’t have to go it alone. But it just shows how hard Ken Holland is working to keep his players from stalling and providing them with opportunities that may have effects that last for decades. Who knows who they’ll meet on their travels?

  • Rob Rossi (The Athletic): Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford believes that there might not be many in-season deals, so he wants to make his moves before the new season gets started.
    • It’s probably more like football than ever. It’s probably going to be more where you set your team and that’s going to be your team.”
  • Zach Leach (Pro Hockey Rumors): Potential suitors for UFA goaltender Andrew Hammond include the New York Islanders, Anaheim Ducks, Chicago Blackhawks, Pittsburgh Penguins, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks, or Colorado Avalanche. He also noted that a two-year term is not out of the question as there are teams that require a goalie to expose for the expansion draft.

BLH’s Thoughts: Cross Edmonton off that list. They signed Anton Forsberg and have Stuart Skinner and Olivier Rodrigue coming up right behind them. There’s no need for the Oilers to sign another goalie or add another contract.

BLH’s Thoughts: It’s between Yamamoto and Jesse Puljujarvi (Can I get a vowel, Pat?) for me. Either or both could very well rack up 40pts depending on health and performance.

  • John Shannon: Oilers’ Tyson Barrie has changed agents. He has left Newport Sports…CAA Hockey announces that Tyson Barrie is joining the fold. He will be repped by Pat Brisson and Bayne Pettinger.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t know what the reason was for the change in representation, but Brisson handles some big tickets and if Barrie wants to play in Edmonton after this season, he’ll need to keep his contractual expectations out of the clouds.

  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): On Oilers Now (630CHED) Friday morning, the insider was asked about Tampa’s financial situation and a possible scenario where Steven Stamkos getting traded was part of the solution. Friedman said he’d the Lightning captain had already said no to waiving his no-trade but that he’d heard there was a report out of Russia that Tampa was going to send Tyler Johnson to Detroit for the final year of Henrik Zetterberg’s contract ($6M-ish) that will go on LTIR.

BLH’s Thoughts: It was Bob Stauffer who brought up the Stamkos thing and to me, it sounds like Stauffer has heard something and was giving Friedman a chance to break some news on his show… Weren’t there some rumors of Stamkos heading to Detroit not too long after Tampa won the Cup? Could there be a deal on the table were both Johnson and Stamkos go to Detroit for Zetterberg’s contract and maybe a guy like Danny DeKeyser? DeKeyser’s playing future is somewhat cloudy I’ve read and if that’s the case, could he also be put on LTIR for the shortened season?
