NHL Rumors and Speculation

Adam Vingan (The Athletic): “Reached out for comment regarding the hot-mic moment involving an official (Tim Peel) in Nashville. NHL deputy commisioner Bill Daly tells The Athletic, “We are taking a look at it.”

Darren Dreger (TSN): Bill Armstrong (Arizona GM) wnats to make some changes, and perhaps some significant changes. Not a fire sale for Arizone, just a strong appetite for “different”… The Coyotes are looking for long-term improvement and willing to discus just about anything on the trade front.

Frank Seravalli (TSN): “I believe the Maple Leafs’ primary target at this point is Nashville forward Mikael Granlund.”

James Mirtle (The Athletic): “Kyle Palmieri’s got a NTC, pretty sure Maple Leafs are on it, and he doesn’t seem to have a lot of interest in doing the quarantine.”

Lance Lysowski (The Buffalo News): Sabres GM Kevyn Adams has not asked Eric Staal about the 10 teams on his no-trade list. It’s clear, though, that Staal will be gone by the April 12th deadline.

Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): The NHL hopes to hold the expansion draft in Seattle. The 2021 NHL Entry Draft won’t be in Montreal, with the Habs due a replacement down the road. It sounds like the NHL is headed towards another virtual draft.

  • “Sounds like the Sabres are making some scouting changes. At the very least a shuffling, and then we’ll see about external options. There could be news on the assistant GM front this week.
  • “I’m hearing the Arizona Coyotes have been asked about Conor Garland, and it’s not something I think they really want to do, bt if the offer is big enough and it allos them to re-stock, I think they’re going to at least consider it.”
  • “The Canucks, who were taking some calls on their potential UFAs including Tanner Pearson before he got hurt, they’ve decided to wait (on selling) to see how things play out.
  • “I know Bruce Boudreau, he would love to coach the Buffalo Sabres, and he’s not the only one.”

Pierre LeBrun (TSN): “According to people around the league that I’ve talked to the last couple of days, it’s a 3-asset ask o get in on the bidding for Mattias Ekholm: a 1st round pick, an elite prospect, and a third asset.

  • NJ Devils have heard from pretty much every bubble or playoff team the last couple of weeks. They’re the “action team” heading into the trade deadline. Kyle Palmieri is the big name, he’s a pending UFA, the first order of priority soon is to see if there’s a fit to sign an extension.

John Moven (King’s of the Podcast): LA’s plan is to send Arthur Kaliyev back to Hamilton when the OHL returns. Quinton Byfield will most likely spend the rest of the season with the Kings but  won’t get into 6+ games (so it doesn’t burn the first year of his ELC). He will practice with the team.

Renaud Lavoie (TVA): The Montreal Canadiens presented a plan to public health for the reopening of the Bell Centre to accommodate between 2000 and 4000 fans per game. The NHL wants to be ready to welcome fans in Canada as of April 3rd but knows it might have to wait longer.

Chris Johnston (Sportsnet): “Marcus Sorensen, I know he’s drawn some interest from the Canadian teams, maybe a fit in Calgary there… I do think he will be moving before the deadline.”

  • “I’ve heard the Maple Leafs connected to a couple of names out there that play on the blueline. I’m not yet ruling it out with this much time before the deadline that they’re bringing in a d-man.”
