NHL Rumors and Speculation

Darren Dreger (TSN): Sources say that the Detroit Red Wings had started considering trading forward Anthony Mantha in the past few weeks. They did an excellent job in hiding that.

Aaron Portzline (The Athletic): Was told that the Columbus Blue Jackets did have some trade talks with the Red Wings about Mantha before he was traded to the Washington Capitals.

Andy Strickland (The Athletic): It is believed that Ryan Getzlaf had told the Anaheim Ducks a few days before the trade deadline that he would accept a trade to the Vegas Golden Knights as it is still close to his move.

Darren Dreger (TSN): The New York Rangers were willing to terminate the contract for defenseman Anthony DeAngelo. A mutual termination would have made DeAngelo a free agent but he opted not to accept that option. It was believed that the Montreal Canadiens were very interested.

Lou Korac (NHL.com): St. Louis Blues GM Doug Armstrong of the trade deadline: ‘It had our minds going in different directions. Certainly the play of the last three games and being in a playoff spot today was a reflection of really deciding to stand pat with this group.”

Sheng Peng (San Jose Hockey Now): San Jose Sharks forward Patrick Marleau on if there was a chance that he may have gotten traded yesterday: “Nothing came up.”

Samantha Pell (Washington Post): Caps GM Brian MacLellan said he saw a “frustrated player” re Jakub Vrana. Body language read as frustrated. Team gave it time to try and work out — ended up moving on.

  • “There was a tugging war between coaching staff and staffs that have had him and the way he was playing.”
  • MacLellan also mentioned Vrana’s RFA status w/ arb rights as another factor in the deal:
    • “He’s got some good numbers. Projecting that salary, we get some cost certainty with Mantha so we know what his contract is. That played a factor in it, yes.”

John Vogl (The Athletic): John Vogl of The Athletic wrote a piece talking about how Adams had spoken to multiple clubs. Sabres GM Kevyn Adams gave Taylor Hall a no-movement clause, and the winger used it to force a trade to Boston.

  • “We did the best we could possibly do.” said Adams

NBC Sports Boston: Darren Hartwell reports Taylor Hall said he’d be willing to sign with the Bruins if things work out with them over the remainder of this season. Hall was acquired by the Bruins in the early-morning hours before yesterday’s 3 pm ET trade deadline.

Dan Kingerski (Pittsburgh Hockey Now): Cites a well-placed Penguins source saying Brian Burke, the club’s president of hockey operations, contacted the Anaheim Ducks to inquire into the availability of captain Ryan Getzlaf. This was done before the Penguins went on to acquire Jeff Carter from the Los Angeles Kings before yesterday’s trade deadline.

Mike Sielski (Philapdelphia Inquirer): Reports Flyers GM Chuck Fletcher has no intention of changing his coaching staff during the offseason. A roster shakeup could be in store in the offseason as Fletcher looks to the long term to address his struggling club’s needs. Sielski calls on Fletcher to make some bold moves this summer to fix his stale roster.
