NHL Rumors and Speculation

Sportsnet: Toronto Maple GM Kyle Dubas said they have had interest and have been keeping an eye on defenseman Ben Hutton since 2019.

  • “The thing, Luke, with Ben when he was, in the summer of 2019 he was available when he signed with LA. We had investigated signing him. We made trades in that offseason that brought in two defensemen, Cody Ceci and Tyson Barrie. So that is sort of what we went with at that point.”

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: It was Anthony DeAngelo‘s camp that brought up the idea of a mutual termination of his contract with the New York Rangers. The idea was contingent on DeAngelo being able to get a contract in place with another team.

Adam Vingan and Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic: Nashville Predators Mattias Ekholm‘s name was in the rumor mill ahead of trade deadline. Protection decisions for the expansion draft was one of the reason his name was out there. GM David Poile said that he’s not losing Ekholm in the expansion draft.

  • “I’m not losing Mattias Ekholm in expansion, if that’s what you’re asking me,” he said. “I’ve got that covered.”
  • Other teams may be looking to the Kraken to help out their cap situation are well – Tyler Johnson (Lightning), Jordan Eberle (Islanders), James van Riemsdyk (Flyers), and maybe Jason Zucker (Penguins).
  • They recently wondered if the Nashville Predators might leave forwards Matt Duchene and Ryan Johansen unprotected in this summer’s expansion draft. Both carry $8 million annual salary-cap hits but struggled to live up to contract expectations.

Patrick Johnson (The Province): Patrick Johnston recently reported the Vancouver Canucks have limited salary-cap space for next season after re-signing Tanner Pearson and Thatcher Demko. They’ll also be re-signing restricted free agents Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes this summer, leaving even less room to fill out the remainder of the roster.

WGR 550: Darren Dreger on WGR 550 radio on Buffalo Sabres and Jack Eichel future with the team, if he thinks Eichel will be playing for the Sabres next season.

  • “I don’t, but that’s just my own pure speculation. The reason I get to that point is, I know there’s been enough interest in Jack Eichel. I mean the New York Rangers have had that interest, that’s been well documented, right. How much of it is real? Some of it is real…”
  • “I believe there is a Western team that has expressed interest in Jack Eichel.”
  • “I mean Jack in LA makes a ton of sense to me. I don’t think it’s too hard to make sense of that from a hockey perspective, and for the same reasons, the Chicago Blackhawks. But I say that, I think LA most definitely has interest, but I don’t know if Chicago has only because I haven’t talked to anybody in Chicago to confirm that, but it would make a lot of sense.”

Jordan Hall of NBC Philadelphia: General manager Chuck Fletcher is interested in trading for a top-pair defenseman that has game-changing skills.

John Vogl (The Athletic): John Vogl recently noted Sam Reinhart’s stock was high before the trade deadline. He claimed there’s interest in the 25-year-old Sabres winger… The clock is ticking on four potential scenarios:

  • “1. The Sabres can trade him now. The acquiring team would pay a premium because it would have the forward for at least one more season.2. The Sabres can trade him at the draft, which is typically when blockbusters happen.3. They can sign him to another one-year deal and see if they finally improve. If the losing lingers, he can be dealt next season as a rental.

    4. They can sign him to a long-term contract, cementing his status as a building block.”
