NHL Rumors and Speculation

Tom Gulitti (NHL.com): (mailbag) How Taylor Hall plays down the stretch/playoffs may determine how long he’s with the organization. There is a good chance that he re-signs with the Bruins as it seems like a good fit so far.

  • Tampa Bay Lightning forward Tyler Johnson has three years left at a $5 million cap hit. It won’t be easy for the Lightning to find a team to take on the contract without them attaching an asset to Johnson. They’ll be forced to give up a draft pick or prospect to get someone to take on his contract.
  • Wouldn’t expect the Washington Capitals to leave Evgeny Kuznetsov unprotected for the expansion draft. They might not need to clear a roster spot at center for Connor McMichael by the start of next season as they may start him off on the wing.

Donnie and Dhali: Elliotte Friedman on The Team with Don Taylor and Rick Dhaliwal on Vancouver Canucks head coach Travis Green, who remains without a contract for next season.

  • “I think there’s are some teams who say this is our chance to draw some of those numbers back and I think that’s kind of what’s going on right now between Travis Green and the Canucks.”
  • “Rick Tocchet who I think has done a really good job this year in Arizona is another. And we’re all kind of watching Brind’Amour in Carolina. He’s a guy who I think wants to stay there. I think they want him to stay there but I think the grind is, what’s a number that both sides think is fair?”

Jim Parsons (NHL Trade Talk)Could the Edmonton Oilers use a third team to try and move James Neal this off-season in hopes of avoiding a buy-out scenario with the veteran?

  • “If the Oilers buy out Neal’s $5.75 million contract this offseason, a buyout costs $1.92M/year for four years. But, if the Oilers retained 50% in a trade to Team A, then Team A retained 25% in a trade to Team B, everyone gets something out of the deal. Team B could buy Neal out.”
  • “If you factor in some teams may be desperate to add picks and the Oilers could work out deals where they take lesser contracts back — ones that aren’t nearly as crippling as Neal’s — you never know what possibilities might present themselves.”

Anthony Scultore (Daily Goal Horn): The New York Rangers’ well known secret is that they are looking to trade for a game breaker at center. The primary target is disgruntled superstar Jack Eichel.

  • “They are willing to give up a lot to get him, as long as it is reasonable. The combination of “four first round draft picks” rumored to be asked by the Sabres is never going to happen. The Rangers have a log jam on the wings, and with LW Chris Kreider unlikely to waive his no move clause to go to the Sabres we need to look at the right side.”
  • “Pavel Buchnevich is an RFA with arbitration rights and will be eyeing a deal north of $6 million per season. His cost could make the decision to trade him for a star center that much easier. It is unlikely Kaapo Kakko would be considered, but Vitali Kravtsov’s impressive start makes the decision tougher if they want to retain Buchnevich.”
