NHL Rumors and Speculation

Fluto Shinzawa (The Athletic) suggests Mattias Ekholm, Alex Edler, Alex Goligoski, Jon Merril, and Mike Reilly as defense options for the Boston Bruins.

  • He also suggests Rickard Rakell, Kyle Palmieri, Miles Wood, Bobby Ryan, and Riley Nash as potential forward options for the Bruins.

Pierre LeBrun (TSN) has the feeling that there won’t be a contract extension between the devils and forward Kyle Palmieri.

John Vogl (The Athletic) says the Buffalo Sabres want a first round pick for forward Taylor Hall but to get that they may need to include another piece in the package.

Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet) is reporting that the Vancouver Canucks have begun preliminary contract extension talks with Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.

Tarik El-Bashir (The Athletic) lists Mikael Granlund, Luke Glendening, Erik Haula, and Riley Nash as rental options for the Washington Capitals.

Arthur Staple (The Athletic) believes Dustin Brown and Nick Foligno are two players who have been linked to the New York Islanders in the past.

Scott Burnside (The Athletic) sees the Edmonton Oilers as a good fit for Calgary Flames forward Sam Bennett.

BLH’s Thoughts: Recently the Oilers top-six, as ridiculous as it may sound, is having trouble scoring. Aside from Draisaitl and McDavid, the production on the wings has all but dried up. So, would bringing in Sam Bennett be a good solution? Yes, he does have four points in his last five but last I checked, he was firmly entrenched in Calgary’s bottom-six, a place where Edmonton is more or less sorted.

But it does beg the question of whether or not this player would be an upgrade on the likes of Dominik Kahun and Tyler Ennis because Edmonton needs a player who can contribute on their second line on the left wing and some might say a fearless scrapper like Bennett would be a perfect wingman for one of Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.

For me, I’m an endless optimistic, so there’s a large portion of myself that would love to see Bennett in an Oilers jersey. Bennett makes just over $2.5M/yr, so could Edmonton send Dominik Kahun, Tyler Benson, and another asset to the Flames and maybe Calgary retains a little bit of money to make the finances work? Or perhaps they’d take Kyle Turris if they’re unwilling to retain?

At the very worst, Bennett becomes Edmonton’s new 3C and for a player who normally is above 50% on the dot and one who scores on 10% of his shots, I don’t mind that. Plus, with the Oilers on the verge of becoming a perennial playoff team, I get one of the better post-season performers in the league.

Dallas Morning News: The Dallas Stars will address the team’s goaltending situation in the off-season rather than the trade deadline.

Brian La Rose (Pro Hockey Rumors) lists Radim Vohorna, Juuso Riikola, Sam Miletic, Colton Sceviour, and Valtteri Puustinen as potential trade chips for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Darren Dreger (TSN) says Kyle Palmeri will be traded this week, it is believed the Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins and New York Islanders could be possible destinations.

TSN Panel: Darren Dreger feels the Leafs could target Sam Bennett of the Calgary Flames. Jeff O’Neill stated Toronto should target Columbus Blue Jackets forward Nick Foligno as he has grit to go along with a scoring touch. Dave Poulin said the Leafs should go after Kyle Palmieri.

Dan Rosen (NHL.com): The San Jose Sharks are back in the playoff race. Patrick Marleau said last week he’d be open to a trade at the deadline to a contender. Could the Sharks be looking at adding now if they continue to play well?

Adrian Dater: The Colorado Avalanche have just under $8 million in LTIR cap pool. Meaning, they can exceed the cap ceiling by that amount. He still believes they will look to add another backup goaltender.
