NHL Rumors and Speculation

Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Those Jack Eichel talks are back with Friedman noting that the plan even before the Rangers fired their President and GM was to make another pitch. With Chris Drury at the helm, it sounds like it will be more aggressive.

  • “It’s not like they were afraid to go after Eichel, they made the Sabres an offer on Eichel in the offseason. It’s one that at least made the Sabres think before deciding they weren’t ready to make the move yet. I don’t think Chris Drury will be any more or less inclined to make a move for Eichel as the organization is already prepared to do that.”

Nick Kypreos: Says Mike Babcock could be the next coach of the New York Rangers if they let David Quinn go in the off-season. Doug MacLean, his co-host on their podcast, suggested John Tortorella could be another candidate for the Rangers.

Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic): Says either the Buffalo Sabres or Columbus Blue Jackets could be John Davidson’s next stop.

  • “I do believe he would love to be part of a Stanley Cup championship team as a swan song to a lifetime in the game; that, of course, would require the right opportunity to come along with the right sort of club. A return to Columbus could be a possibility. After his experience with Dolan in New York, would he listen to the Buffalo Sabres if they ever called? Maybe. Both the Blue Jackets and Sabres could use a senior voice of reason to steady franchises that have been listing sideways of late.”

Bruce Garrioch (Ottawa Sun): Says goaltender Matt Murray is not likely to be protected by the Senators for the Seattle Kraken expansion draft.

  • “Of course, the biggest decision will come down to which goalie the Senators will protect in the expansion draft. Normally, the top choice would be Murray, but given his struggles in his first year with the club and the fact he has three years left on his deal at $6.25 million per-season he’s not likely to get touched by the Seattle Kraken… The talk will centre around whether it will be the Daccord or Gustavsson. Yes, people are fretting that whichever goalie is left unprotected will be picked up by the Kraken, but you have to look at the big picture and there will plenty of options available for Seattle so maybe they’ll opt look elsewhere on Ottawa’s depth chart.”

Anthony Scultore (Forever Blueshirts): Is under the belief that Rangers defenseman Tony DeAngelo’s future with the club is still unclear.

  • “I spoke with DeAngelo shortly after the dismissals of both John Davidson and Jeff Gorton on Wednesday. When I asked if he thought this was an opportunity to return he replied, “I am not sure.”

Pierre LeBrun (TSN): The Arizona Coyotes and Rick Tocchet just parted ways and it sounds like the Yotes are wasting no time in getting a replacement.

  • “I would expect the Coyotes to speak with as many as 10 coaching candidates. Wouldn’t surprise me if they reach out to the likes of Lane Lambert, Nate Leaman and Rocky Thompson among others.”
