NHL Rumors and Speculation

Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic): Says he thinks that hockey pundit and former NHL netminder Kevin Weekes could be a fit for the NY Rangers front office.

  • “I would look at Kevin Weekes for a lot of reasons beginning with the fact that Weekes has a lot of the same background, career path and people skills that made Davidson so effective. Davidson played goal in the NHL, eventually moved into the broadcast booth once his playing career ended and then got his first front office position in St. Louis.”

Darren Dreger (TSN): is getting the sense that Arizona Coyotes and head coach Rick Tocchet will be going in separate directions after the season.

  • “There was a sense that perhaps there would be an opportunity to extend but my sources indicated that it’s more likely that Tocchet goes to the free market.”

Stan Sweeney (NTR.me): The Buffalo Sabres have captain Jack Eichel on their current roster but by the sounds of it, don’t expect that to be the case come next season. Turns out the Sabres have been fielding trade calls for almost a year now, and before the beginning of last season, declined an offer from the New York Rangers.

The Rangers are rumored to be open to moving some big names including youngsters like Kaapo Kakko, K’Andre Miller off their current roster or Zachary Jones, and Matthew Robertson from their prospect pool.

  • “The deal was believed to be prospect heavy and included one first-round pick, meanwhile the Sabres wanted Adam Fox included in the trade and the talks ended there.”

A to Z Sports Nashville: A newspaper in Finland has indicated that their local hockey team, Oulun Karpat, has been in conversation with Nashville Predators’ goalie Pekka Rinne about signing with Karpat after his contract with the Preds ends this summer.

  • “Harri Aho, the Sports Director for Karpat, mentioned they were in “active conversations” with Pekka Rine about joining their team following Rinne’s departure from the NHL.”

Mike McIntyre (Winnipeg Free Press): If Paul Maurice can’t get his team on track GM Kevin Cheveldayoff could be looking for a new direction. With a bevy of good coaches available and soon to be, this certainly has some merit to it.

Kevin McGran (Toronto Star): believes that the emergence of Rasmus Sandin could make Morgan Rielly expendable.

  • “Rielly would bring at least as big a return as Kasperi Kapanen: a first-round pick and top prospect. Plus it would create a roster scenario in which the Leafs could protect Travis Dermott on its expansion list. (Sandin and Timothy Liljegren are exempt.)”
