NHL Rumors and Speculation

Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic): “I believe the Leafs have held talks with Chicago and San Jose over the past month about using them as a third-party broker in a potential trade scenario if that came to pass.”

  • “I believe the Panthers were one of the teams that inquired on Kyle Palmieri before he was moved to the Islanders. Which tells you that Florida may look to add a top-six forward before the deadline. But I also think the Panthers would add a blueliner if they could.”
  • “Could the Devils be the only team to net a first-round pick at this deadline? Or at least one that’s not conditional. I could be wrong, and yes the Buffalo Sabres hope to net a first-rounder for Taylor Hall, and if the Columbus Blue Jackets decide to move Foligno, maybe they do as well.”
  • “Whatever teams try to step up on Hall either need a third party broker or have to send Buffalo a contract or two to make it all work. All the other buyers on the market now are close to the cap.”
  • “One team executive I spoke with Thursday said if Hall was still sitting there Monday he could see a team get him for a second- or third-round pick plus send Buffalo a contract to make it work… Remember that Hall has a full no-move, he gets to say yes or no to any deal.”
  • “An under-the-radar name to keep an eye on is Alex Iafallo… I wonder if the Leafs don’t give the Kings a call on him before Monday.”
  • Jaden Schwartz is a name that’s popping up a bit more on my radar in the last 24 hours or so.”

Renaud Lavoie (TVA):“Now he has a little more leeway. It’s a little over $ 2 million that he gets to go find another player. So, yes, they could involve draft picks in a future trade. But the trend is heavy with Marc Bergevin. He’s looking for former Stanley Cup winners. And that, I think it is still a priority for him. Their eyes will turn to the Blues. Is it Tyler Bozak, Vince Dunn, who makes less than $ 2 million a year? Suddenly he can work a little more. His hands are much less tied than a few days ago.”

The Fourth Period: “While a trade is not considered imminent at this stage, multiple sources have told TFP some teams have discussed Georgiev, at least internally, and others have poked around on his availability, something that occurred last off-season.”

Anthony Scultore (Daily Goal Horn): Believes that the Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, and Florida Panthers are the favorites to land Taylor Hall.

BLH’s Thoughts: This is the first I’ve seen the Oilers being a “favorite” to land Hall… Unless Hall says Edmonton is the only place he’s interested in being traded to, I can think of at least five other clubs who could offer more in terms of return and a better chance at success in the playoffs.

Matt Larkin (The Hockey News): Thinks Panthers GM Bill Zito could be active in the trade market before Monday. He could pursue a forward like Taylor Hall or a defenseman like Savard or Josh Manson of the Anaheim Ducks.

Craig Morgan (AZ Coyotes Insider): In a recent interview, Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong said the trade rumors regarding winger Conor Garland were the result of another club calling about him. Armstrong said it leaked out but didn’t come from him.

BLH’s Thoughts: This is a name that I wonder if the Oilers would be in on. He’s kind of like a modern day Ray Whitney. Just a little guy but he’s a fantastic hockey player and a guy like Kailer Yamamoto could learn a lot playing alongside someone like Garland.
