Edmonton Oilers Talk: Oilers Sign Slater Koekkoek

Breaking News!

The Edmonton Oilers have signed former 10th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft Slater Koekkoek to a one-year deal worth just under $1M according to TSN’s Ryan Rishaug.

There’d been mild speculation throughout the off-season that the Oilers were looking to add an extra defenceman but that really ramped up in the last week or so. More or less since Bob Stauffer put out this tweet,

And then Oilers long-time beat writer replied with this,

The more recent rumors had the Oilers looking at Ben Hutton as well as Koekkoek and after writing this post comparing the two defenders, I’m quite happy they chose the better defender.

The fact of the matter is, the former Lightning/Blackhawk is a really good bet for the money he’s about to get paid. He’s got more experience than Lagesson and Lennstrom and he will be a very serviceable option for Edmonton’s bottom pair. Also, we know that there will be injuries to the likes of Kris Russell or Adam Larsson given the style of hockey they play.

For me, two questions arise from this signing though.

  1. The Oilers have a massive glut of left-shot defenders now with Nurse, Jones, Russell, Lennstrom, and Lagesson signed on, what’s the plan there?
  2. Is the club still looking to trade a winger for MORE help on the blue line?

I suppose that begs a third question, are the Oilers on the verge of moving a defenceman?
