  • However, the Bear situation, no matter how badly handled, doesn’t inform the Yamamoto experience. I think the Oilers made a mistake on Bear, and time will answer.
  • Yamamoto might be a different mistake, a mistake of inaction, if the current trend continues. I’m always onside with giving lots of leeway for young offensive talent, but the Oilers may be costing themselves by running KY for this many games and so few shots on goal. Time will tell.

BLH’s Thoughts: If letting a bottom pair defenseman comes back to bite the Oilers in the ass, so be it, it was meant to be and I’m sure one of the four that Edmonton has percolating in their system will make up for it.

I tend to agree with LT on Yamo though and it’s almost like I’m re-explaining myself every day with this guy. He’s got all the tools to be an elite 3rd liner, so why not put him there? Whereas his ceiling as a top-six winger is quite limited in my opinion…

Five Questions Surrounding the Oilers as 2021 Comes to a Close

When the team is at full strength, should Warren Foegele continue to play on Connor McDavid’s wing?

  • In Carolina, Foegele was at his best when playing alongside skill. His highest scoring chance results came alongside Carolina’s top players like Aho and Svechnikov, who also posted superior results with Foegele on-ice as opposed to without. Consequently, I think Foegele does deserve this opportunity in the top-six, which is most likely the best option for both him and the team.

The effort is there, but will the results come soon for Kailer Yamamoto?

  • Yamamoto ranks 7th last on the team in impact on goal share, and 6th last on the team in impact on expected goal share. In addition, he has just two shots in his last eight games, in spite of consistent playing time with Leon Draisaitl.
  • …bumping him down to the third line when the roster is fully healthy is also reasonable given the lack of production.

Can Dylan Holloway make an impact?

  • When he does fully recover, I’d expect him to spend some time in Bakersfield, but he could definitely be on Edmonton’s roster by the playoffs. I’d love to see a line of Holloway – McLeod – Yamamoto. It’s a trio that would offer the bottom-six much more skill and speed.

Is Ryan McLeod the answer to their 3C issues, should they play RNH there, or will the solution be found via trade?

  • If Seattle is shopping him, Edmonton’s top forward target should be Jared McCann. Acquiring him gives the Oilers much more flexibility, as he has the ability to play both wing and center. McCann is fairly productive at 5v5, and also has very strong underlying numbers (59% goal share, 53% expected goal share in the past three seasons).

What’s the organization’s final goal for this season?

  • The goal in Year Seven of McDavid and Year Eight of Draisaitl should be nothing short of winning the Stanley Cup. That should have been the objective last season as well. I’m not a fan of the notion that “you can’t go all-in every year.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Foegele to stay in the first line? Yes, please! If history suggests that he produces alongside skilled centers, GIVE THE GUY A SKILLED CENTER!!! For the love of Pete!

Killer to the the 3rd line? Can’t happen fast enough.

Will Holloway make an impact in his first year? Not if we go by his playing history. He’ll need some time to acclimate to the pro game, but on the other hand, if his teammates are saying that he’s good to go, and they’d be the ones to know, then give him his shot. My fear is that the Oilers get into a Ryan Poehling scenario…

Ryan McLeod isn’t the answer to Edmonton’s 3C this year, but he will be in the future. His work on the faceoffs has been very promising but he’s yet to get a grasp on NHL production.

The ultimate goal for every team in every season is the Stanley Cup, I don’t think that is debatable. But for the Oilers, it should be to simply make the playoffs and then go from there considering that anything can happen once you make it to the dance and the roster is not yet complete.

  • Jim Matheson: Yes, Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun is a good player on a poor team, but if the asking price is the Edmonton Oilers’ best prospect in Philip Broberg, why would the Oilers want to do that?

BLH’s Thoughts: Well, they’d want to do that because they feel Chychrun would upgrade the level of talent on the team and the current timeframe requires the club to get better quicker.

Maybe the better question is, would trading Philip Broberg in a package for Chychrun be a smart move for the Edmonton Oilers right now?
