Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Will Ken Holland Pull the Trigger on this Once in a Lifetime Opportunity?

TSN’s Chris Johnston expects the Oilers to start making moves tout de suite, Sportsnet’s Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman are saying Walker to Edmonton is a possibility, and could Ken Holland bring in an All-Star teammate of Connor McDavid’s to help with their Stanley Cup run? Read on to find out!

(I should start prefacing these blogs with the fact that I write them a day in advance and because we’re getting so close to the deadline there’s a good chance I might write about a player or a team and it be old news by the time it gets to your beautiful eyes. If that happens, my apologies!)

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

Have the Oilers Been After Jenner All Along?

“I can’t help but wonder what several fans online were wondering when they saw Connor McDavid go slightly off the board during the NHL All-Star draft. He seemed to go out of his way to select (Boone) Jenner for his team.” – Jim Parsons, NHL Trade Talk

  • Jim’s right, there’ve been no official ties between the Oilers and the Blue Jackets to date. Mostly fan talk.
  • Connor would’ve played against him in junior and he’d have a good idea as to what Jenner would be able to bring to Edmonton’s locker room.
  • The Oilers have been talking with Columbus constantly all season long and everybody thinks they were only discussing Elvis Merzlikins… Misdirection at its finest?
  • Jenner’s always been sort of a pipe dream acquisition in my mind for the Oilers because I feel like he fits as the perfect 3C for this club at this point in time. Not a spring pup anymore, lots of experience, his contract is palpable ($3.75M for two this year and next) and he’s the captain of a flailing franchise (not an easy gig).
  • I like the character of the person and believe that’s the kind of addition that would benefit Edmonton because at this point I reckon the Oilers aren’t going to be able to keep up with the big spenders and will need to be frugal with at the trade deadline by picking up the right pieces, not the best ones.
  • Now, he doesn’t score a lot, but he’s good on the dot (54% avg career) and he’s the perfect post-season player when comes down to size and style of play. Another thing about him is that he doesn’t spend a lot of time in the penalty box (14 PIM so far).
  • If he were a righty, he’d be the ideal candidate for Edmonton.
Chris Johnston Expects Movement THIS WEEK!

TSN’s Chris Johnston said of the Oilers, “I expect them to be active on the trade front in the next coming week.” This is after both the Canucks and Jets made big trades.” – The Hockey Writers

  • I know that Holland does a lot of business before the deadline, so I can’t wait to see what he pulls off this week.
  • That said, there’s a month left until the deadline, so the Oilers might want to see how the team reacts to getting their streak busted before making any rash decisions.
Walker Making his Way to Edmonton?

“An insider linked the Oilers to Walker recently, while also mentioning another team who has had some conversations with the Flyers. This was revealed by Elliotte Friedman on The Jeff Marek Show and he said, “I think more likely than not, Walker gets moved, whether it’s Edmonton or I saw some Tampa (Bay Lightning) conversations yesterday.” – Rob Couch, The Hockey Writers

  • You know, Vinnie Desharnais is getting a massive push right now and after last night’s game, I wonder if there’s a feeling amongst the brass in Edmonton that he could replace Ceci and partner Darnell Nurse going forward?
  • That means they could deal Ceci out and bring a guy like Sean Walker in without really hurting what they’ve got going at the moment.
  • Walker’s been playing with Nick Seeler all year and I could be wrong here, but Seeler’s a real stay-at-home dman, isn’t he? Would he fit better with Nurse or with Kulak/Broberg?
  • Lastly, Elliotte Friedman said at the beginning of December that Flyers GM Daniel Briere would be willing to trade Walker and Seeler TOGETHER!!! Doesn’t that sound like something that would interest the Oilers for their 3rd pairing?
  • Edmonton could do it without having think about the financial end. I mean, maybe Philly likes Kulak and Ceci though and would take them on. Not the worst idea in the world to get instant replacements AND draft/prospect assets.
