Edmonton Oilers Trade Talk: Oilers Are Checking in on Two Scoring Wingers Out of the Metro

Today we’re discussing some unlikely trade targets for the Oilers who are playing in the Metropolitan Division NOT named Jake Guentzel. Friedman’s reckons that Edmonton will grab a goalie before the deadline expires, and we’ll touch on some old rumors that just won’t go away.

I should start prefacing these blogs with the fact that I write them a day in advance and because we’re getting so close to the deadline there’s a good chance I might write about a player or a team and it be old news by the time it gets to your beautiful eyes. If that happens, my apologies!

But before we get to that, give us a follow on the socials!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

Romantic Return of Ebs on the Horizon?

“The team has been linked to other names, including Sean Walker and Scott Laughton of the Philadelphia Flyers. Edmonton’s name has come up in connection with Chris Tanev. They’ve been linked to a reunion with Jordan Eberle. It’s also believed Vladimir Tarasenko would consider waiving to join the Oilers. Frankly, they don’t mind him as a fit either.” – NHL Trade Talk

  • Jason Gregor made a good point on his show recently about Sean Walker and I’m probably going to butcher it but he basically said that it’s not a good idea to deal Ceci, a top-four defender for multiple seasons, for a guy who’s only been a top-4 dman for half of a season. That makes sense, right?
  • Should the Oilers upgrade Darnell Nurse’s partner? Sure! But actually do it! Grab Parayko out of St. Louis! Don’t muck around trying to shoehorn somebody in and gamble on a position that is so bloody important for the playoffs.
  • I wonder about Edmonton just adding depth pieces on the backend like Megna (CHI), Rutta (SJ), Bogosian (MIN), or Kovacevic (MTL).
  • As for the forwards, there’s going to be some tinkering there I feel. I don’t think Foegele is safe at all. He’s so inconsistent, but that could be said for Edmonton’s entire 3rd line, too. That said, moving his contract allows the club to bring in a higher end player.
  • Would they trade Foegele to Chicago for Taylor Raddysh and then turn around and use the savings on one of the names mentioned above?
  • How about this name? TJ Oshie. He fits the Holland M.O. for Stanley Cup contender trade targets and he makes 250k more than Eberle. One more year left after this one. Who knows if he’ll be able to finish it…
Dabbling

“It’s very possible the Oilers will dabble in the goalie market, but you never know if you’re going to need someone again.” – Elliotte Friedman

  • Fleury is really the only guy you want to go for if you’re a Cup contender, right? I guess there’s Jake Allen but I thought he had Edmonton on his no-trade list. Merzlikins is an upgrade on Pickard but that contract is kind of gastly for a backup.
  • Let me throw out a few names of netminders who make under $2M and have a better than .910% save percentage this year and you tell me what you think in the comments below,
    • Dave Rittich (LA), Alex Nedeljkovic (PIT), Cam Talbot (LA), Joey Daccord (SEA)

“He’s won a Cup. He was great last season with a career-best 34 goals and 73 points. He has 21 goals and 34 points this season…” – Gregor on Tyler Toffoli

“He leads them with 23 goals and 51 points. He’s the heartbeat of their team and he has another year remaining on an excellent value contract at $5.5m.” – Gregor on Travis Konecny

“He is the best pure shooter available. He is a left shot, but can comfortably play the right side. He is a six-time 30 goal scorer. He can finish… When he’s on he is dangerous, but I’m not sure he has the offensive punch now than when he won a Cup in St. Louis…” – Gregor on Vlad Tarasenko

“He has 15 goals and leads the Capitals with 14 goals 5×5. He wouldn’t expect to be on the first unit PP in Edmonton. Holland knows him well from their time in Detroit… His cap hit is the challenge, as even if the Caps retain half the Oilers would be taking on $2.85m.” – Gregor on Anthony Mantha

  • Toffoli could be had, Konecny is a pipe dream, Tarasenko has entered the chat for sure, and Mantha is a stealth target I think.
  • Mantha’s size and shot will intrigue the Oilers as a winger for Draisaitl too, but the problem with him is that he runs hot and cold way to often and it’s not like he’s played with shitty centers in Washington either. Ken Holland will have a very good gauge on him and if the Oilers trade for him, you can be sure that the due diligence would’ve been done.
  • I like Tarasenko a lot for the role he’d play for the Oilers and that’s pure offense. Nothing more. When I read about him only being good for that as if it’s a negative, I call bullshit. There’s no perfect player out there. This isn’t a bloody video game. He’d be a good winger for Leon I believe.
  • Now, Toffoli is in the same boat as Tarasenko but he’s got a bit more depth to his game and he’s got a shite ton of playoff/Cupo experience with those juggernaut LA Kings teams. I could get behind bringing him in, 100%.
