Edmonton Oilers Trade Talk: This Has to be the Player Edmonton Trades Away

The Edmonton Oilers have one player that needs to be moved on from. They shouldn’t have gambled on him and now they’re getting punished for it. I’m also wondering if there’s a different defenseman in Calgary that the Oilers would benefit from having if there’s a desire to burn a 1st round pick and want to move on from Cody Ceci. Lastly, the Sharks have an underperforming Russian on their team who has the skill to be a middle-six producer but he’s having a right shite season.

I should start prefacing these blogs with the fact that I write them a day in advance and because we’re getting so close to the deadline there’s a good chance I might write about a player or a team and it be old news by the time it gets to your beautiful eyes. If that happens, my apologies!

But before we get to that, give us a follow on the socials!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

A Bad Gamble

Mark Spector wondered if Brown might be the trade piece Edmonton moves to free up some cap space before the deadline. If Brown continues to sit or struggles persist, it’s hard to see why the Oilers would worry about keeping him. His bonus is already an expense the Oilers will have to deal with.” – The Hockey Writers

  • Man, did the talking heads in Edmonton really work their asses off to sell Connor Brown to the fanbase eh? Remember when Stauffer was calling him Hyman-lite? All that talk about Brown’s and McDavid’s days in junior. The chatter about how elite he was on the PK…
  • I can remember saying that he can’t finish and his best days were in Toronto.
  • His PK numbers were inflated because he was the only guy in Ottawa who the coaching staff trusted to play a man down but his relative fancies down were in the bottom half of the league for skaters who played over 200 minutes on the kill.
  • Well, I hope he gets moved to a team that’ll play him because his old junior coach has seen enough. And good on him for betting on himself because he’s going to get a $3M cheque next year for eating absolute shite in his last season in the league.
  • I really think they need to trade him because he’s doing f*ck all. You can’t just be somebody who skates fast and plays on the PK in today’s NHL and not produce. He’s not providing an energy to the team with physicality. He’s not fighting. He barely shoots. He’s not a great passer either… Is he crashing the net at all?
Tanev Overvalued?

“Friedman lists the Toronto Maple Leafs, Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, Vancouver Canucks, and Edmonton Oilers as teams who are interested in Tanev. He adds that Calgary is looking for a 1st round pick, but no one has stepped up to offer that yet.” – NHL Trade Talk

  • They’re not getting one from Edmonton unless the Flames attach somebody with value and term.
  • If they’re hell bent on a 1st rounder, send Rasmus Andersson with salary retained to the Oilers for Ceci, a prospect, and and a 1st.
We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat

  • Edmonton’s watching Barabonov and Duclair.
  • The Russian’s on an expiring $2.5M/yr contract, so he’s cheap, but he mailed it in before the season even started.
  • As a result, he’s only managed three goals and six assists, is -21, and has only played 34 games.
  • Can anybody tell me what the Sharks are doing with his shift starts though? This is a skilled winger who’s not getting the majority of his shift starts or faceoffs in the offensive zone. Most of the draws he’s on the ice for are in the defensive zone. No wonder his production is down.
  • In the two previous seasons with San Jose he scored 10 and 15 goals respectively but never playing more than 70 games in a year. he added 29 assists in his first full year with the Sharks and then in his second helped out with 32 assists.
  • So you can see there’s something there, but it’s not a lot.
  • His 5v5 GF% rel is -20.76!
  • His 5v5 xGF% rel is -1.72!
  • However, his 5v5 PDO rel is 93.76… It makes you wonder what it could look like if he rebounds on a better team with better centers.
