CHASING SHADOWS, MOONLIGHT MYSTERY
  • The season begins in two weeks, there has been no indication that Smith or Koskinen are suffering from any malady, so we can project this competition as closed.
  • I have Koekkoek edging closer to an NHL job…
  • Edmonton has a deep leftorium but none who are ready for recall.
  • Markus Niemelainen is emerging as a player who we could see later in the year.
  • McLeod is going to make this team, but his performance so far has been uneven. It opens the door for a conversation. What does that sound like? If the Oilers believe there is a forward worth keeping who is eligible for waivers, McLeod could get optioned out until the wingers suss themselves out.
  • I think Tyler Benson is in some danger here, and this isn’t the coaching staff overlooking him… Perlini ate his lunch…
  • …it’s Sceviour v. Archibald and Turris v. Marody. We’re seeing separation, Marody didn’t lose ground last night but Turris gained ground the night before.

BLH’s Thoughts: Koekkoek has the job, there’s no “edging” towards anything. He’s not at any risk of not playing in the NHL this year unless injuries get the best of him.

I do agree with LT that Markus Niemelainen could be one of the first call-ups of the year should Kris Russell and Slater Koekkoek miss any extended time. Folks will say Broberg should get the nod, but he’s not ready yet. He’s got to work on his escapability and besides, six months with Dave Manson will do him wonders.

If Benson is in the lineup tonight and he can continue his form from the 3rd period of the WPG game, he will gain significant ground on Perlini. That said, the Edmonton product has got his work cut out for him.

As for Archibald and Marody, they’re not even in the conversation at this point. Archie’s dealing with something potentially serious at the moment and Marody can’t seem to rise to the occasion and is destined for Bakersfield.

If you wanted to pit Sceviour vs. Turris, now that’s something that makes sense right now.

Oilersnation

John Scott talks about experience playing with Duncan Keith and what he’ll bring to the Oilers
  • “A 38-year-old Duncan is like a 30-year-old everyone else. He keeps his body in such good shape, like he literally has it down to a regime, how many calories he takes in, what he puts in his body. He’s going to come in in tremendous shape, he’s very serious, he’s work regimented, and he’s got a little screw loose.”
  • “You’ve seen him play against Vancouver in the playoffs where he’s crosschecking guys and high-sticking guys in the teeth, so he’s definitely passionate.”
  • “It’ll be good for Edmonton because Duncan takes hockey seriously and if you’re playing bad he’s going to scream at you from the back of the bench.”
  • “I’ve been involved in it numerous times where Duncan is effin’ and jeffin’ with Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane during the games saying ‘what are you guys doing? this isn’t going to fly, let’s go’ literally screaming at each other during the game. That’ll be good for McDavid and Draisaitl and those guys because I don’t think they’ve really been held accountable for much.”
  • “If you’re his partner or if you’re a forward playing on his line, you don’t want to let Duncan Keith down. He’s a 38-year-old Hall of Famer who’s been the best defenceman in the league for a decade.”
  • “There’s that kind of persona, that aura that comes with him, so it does weigh a lot in a locker room. When he gets in that room whenever he gets there after his quarantine, the guys will perk up and they’ll be like ‘oh gosh, we’d better bring our A game because Duncan Keith is here.'”
  • “Who knows how long that lasts. Maybe it lasts the whole season because he’ll be the first guy in the room and he’ll be the last to leave and, if you lose, he’s going to expect you to be watching tape and correcting your mistakes. It’s not like ‘oh no, we’ll get them next time,’ it’ll be ‘no, why did we lose, let’s figure it out, and let’s not do it again.’”

BLH’s Thoughts: I can’t wait for Keith to lose his shit on Edmonton’s royal princes and I hope the camera catches all of it because the fanbase will spontaneously combust.

Facetiousness aside, to have a personality like Duncan Keith on the roster at this specific point in time will go a very long way for every member of the team, coaching staff included. The boys are about to learn what it means to be part of a Stanley Cup contender and as fans, we’re going to discover who’s up to the task.

The Daily Goal Horn

#1 Jack Eichel (C), Buffalo Sabres The Sabres took away the C and he needs surgery but will not go for Eichel’s requested disc replacement. NHL may need to step in.

#2 Vladimir Tarasenko (F), St. Louis Blues  Tarasenko has reported to camp and looks great. He doesn’t want to talk about his trade request, but despite all the goodwill he’s still likely to be moved.

#3 Phil Kessel (F), Arizona Coyotes – Kessel has asked for a move to Vegas, but they can’t take him on right now. He is currently nursing an injury and is likely a prime trade deadline rental.

#4 Johnny Gaudreau (F), Calgary Flames – There was some thought that the Flames would extend him this summer but it never came to be. Gaudreau has told the press he isn’t talking about his contract.

#5 Tomas Hertl (C), San Jose Sharks – Hertl is a pending UFA with a history of knee injuries. He’s open to a deal with the Sharks but made it a point he wants to play for a winner. He could be moved at the trade deadline.

#6 Joonas Korpisalo (G), Columbus Blue Jackets – Columbus committed to Elvis Merzlikins as their #1, Korpisalo is now expendable. He could be a trade deadline rental.

#7 Evander Kane (F), San Jose Sharks –  SJ is trying to move on as Kane deals with NHL investigations. The latest reports make it clear that trading him is impossible. He could be a buyout candidate.

#8 Claude Giroux (C), Philadelphia Flyers – With Giroux a pending UFA and the Flyers not talking contract until the end of the season, he is a prime trade deadline rental.

#9 Filip Forsberg (F), Nashville Predators – Nashville would like to sign Forsberg, but the forward isn’t interested in contract distractions now. He is a name to look for at the trade deadline.

#10 Alexandar Georgiev (G), New York Rangers  Georgiev may want a crack as a starter, and the Rangers are still shopping him. NY has Keith Kinkaid as a backup for the season, if a deal is done.
