In Search of a Right Hand Man

Jeff-Petry

The Edmonton Oilers have one, count it, ONE right-handed defenseman under contract going into this summer and the trade options are becoming fewer and fewer as we get closer to the draft. Justin Faulk and Tyson Barrie have been pulled off of the shelf, Travis Hamonic wants to stay in Brooklyn now, Sami Vatanen just signed a new deal with Anaheim that makes him the highest paid blueliner on their team. So what are the Oilers left with?

DO NOT TOUCH WITH CHARA’S STICK

  • Dan Girardi (NYR) – Bad contract and the arrow are pointing south.
  • Cody Franson (BUF) – What happened to this guy? Looked to be developing into something of a beast.
  • Tom Gilbert (MTL) – Need I explain why?
  • Dennis Wideman (CGY) – The refs have been pretty inconsistent in Oilers games… Better not though.

UNRESTRICTED FREE AGENTS

  • Jason Demers – 6’1″ 200lb – He’s the best of the bunch and will be no.1 UFA target on a lot of lists. Would you pay north of $5M per year for this two-way defender?
  • Luke Schenn – 6’2″ 230lb – Would offer a definite physical element and his age is preferable but his skating and mobility isn’t.
  • Zach Redmond – 6’2″ 205lb – Redmond is climbing the ranks on UFA lists everywhere. He seems to be a lesser version of Demers. Could possibly fill a third pairing role well.
  • Roman Polak – 6’0″ 230lb – Nooooo. Unless Nurse needs a sparring partner. Completely exposed in the Finals by Pittsburgh’s speed and relentless forechecking.
  • Dan Boyle – 5’11” 194lb – At 40 years old, is this the kind of player the Oilers should be targeting? I can’t see it.
  • Brian Campbell – 5’10” 192lb – He’s three years younger than Boyle but I’m not sure if he’d like to spend his twilight years playing in Edmonton. I’ve read Chicago and Florida are his preferred destinations. I don’t blame him either.

OFFER SHEETS

  • Tyson Barrie (COL) – A top point producing dman with an edge.
  • Hampus Lindholm (ANH) – Tracking to be a top pairing dman.
  • Rasmus Ristolainen (BUF) – Incredible size and offense. Bad possession numbers.
  • Radko Gudas (PHI) – A freight train on ice. Can play over the line but has some offense.
  • Jacob Trouba (WPG) – Mean MF’er. Has trailed off since being stuck behind Big Buff and Tyler Myers.
  • Connor Murphy (ARI) – Quiet and effective two-way defender.
  • Seth Jones (CLB) – Smooth skater whose offense is a tad better than his defense at this point.

I don’t go into what each brings to the rink because you’re already aware of that but players like Barrie, Lindholm, Ristolainen, Jones, and Trouba would need to be signed in the $7M plus per year range in order to have a chance and at that point the compensation would be a 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd round pick. For a team whose pipeline isn’t a point of pride, I’m not sure if the offer sheet route is the best way to go.

With that being said, Radko Gudas intrigues me a lot and Philly has some nice pieces coming up through their system, most notably, Ivan Provorov. Sam Morin is towering beast of a dman and Travis Sanheim is another. I do wonder if a deal could be made here with the Flyers to acquire Gudas’ rights.

LITTLE KNOWN TRADE TARGETS

  • Josh Manson (ANH) – Dave’s son is a bit better technically than him but I don’t think he’ll even be starring in the NHL’s Hardest Shot Competition anyday. Not that it isn’t hard, I just don’t think offense is his game. Shut down defense is where he carves his niche.
  • Dougie Hamilton (CGY) – Think Calgary would move him to get to no.4?
  • Matt Dumba (MIN) – I can’t see him being worth the price. He looked lost at the World’s.
  • Anton Stralman (TB) – Would Tampa be willing to move Stralman for cap flexibility in order to be able to sign Hedman, Kucherov, Johnson, etc?
  • Kevin Bieksa (ANH) – If the Ducks do sign Hampus Lindholm, that defense is going to be very expensive. Might they be willing to eat some salary to rid themselves of Bieksa?

No Hamonic, No Problem!

Could one of these fellas be on the move to shore up the blue line this summer?

Proposing an Oilers Trade That Makes Sense

There was a time not that long ago when landing coveted top pairing defenceman, Travis Hamonic, was a real possibility for the Edmonton Oilers.  Hamonic’s desired trade destination, Winnipeg, had its hands full signing hulking D-man/power forward Dustin Byfuglien, and if they lost him to free agency, the Jets wouldn’t have the D assets to trade.

But then, somewhat surprisingly, the Jets and Byfuglien came to terms, leaving the Oilers in a much weaker bargaining position.

If Byfuglien hadn’t signed, there is a chance the Islanders would have taken one of the Oilers core forwards (likely RNH or Eberle) for Hamonic.  But ideally, Garth Snow would like a defenceman. (If he’s giving up a defenceman), and with big Buff locked up, Winnipeg now has defensive assets to deal: one of Jacob Trouba or Tyler Myers should do fine.  So while no deal has been done as yet, and likely won’t be done until draft day or later, the Jets and Islanders are likely trading partners . . . or are they?  Or should they be?

The question Jet’s GM Kevin Cheveldayoff should be asking is: are the Islanders the best trading partner for what his team needs? Recently the Oiler’s visited the Jets on the tail end of a road trip and squeezed out a 2 – 1 victory.  This doesn’t sound so bad except when you contrast it with the fact the Jets could only manage one goal against one of the worst defences in the league.  A defence where maybe two of the six defencemen dressed that night would be regulars on any other NHL team. The Jet’s scoring issues have been compounded by the loss of their captain Andrew Ladd and while they have a ton of talent in the pipe, that may not translate into immediate scoring help.

So if you’re Winnipeg, and you have a surplus of right shot D (currently Byufglien, Trouba, and Myers are all righties), and you need to make room for 2013 WJC standout Josh Morissey, plus your team has trouble burying the biscuit, what makes more sense?  Moving a major asset like Trouba to bring a native son home?  Or, moving that same asset to bring in some proven scoring?

And that’s where the Edmonton Oilers come in. The Oilers have lamented for years over missing out on skilled american rearguard Jacob Trouba.  Who knew the seventh defenceman chose in the 2012 draft could develop into its best blueliner?  Maybe even the best player.  But that’s the way the draft rolls. Normally Trouba would be considered untouchable but he’s having an off-year and stamping his feet for a huge raise (said to be in the are of $6.5M AAV as he heads to RFA status) and that has no doubt sent some enquiries to Jets GM Kevin Chevaldayoff.  And one of those GM’s likely inquiring, is our own Pete Chiarelli.

So what is the realistic ask for a player like Trouba?  He’s not a proven #1 like Pietrangelo or Doughty but he’s well on his way.

As the above stats indicate he rates as a top pairing defenceman in the majority of categories, but not every category.  The chart seems to indicate he could work on his passing, not something I’ve noticed when watching him, and likely something that would improve when playing with a more skilled forward core.  At any rate, Trouba is a significant upgrade over any RHD we currently have.

The Oilers could offer current number 3 center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but with Sheifele and Little producing well in the middle, there is little doubt which player the Jets would want in return, or more accurately the one that fills they scoring void best: Jordan Eberle.

Eberle is also coming off a sub par season, mostly due to injuries, but on a season when he’s healthy and feeling his oats, he’s a 25 – 30 goal, 65 – 70 point guy, and the Jets don’t have one of those in their line-up.  Making a trade with the Oilers makes perfect sense. The Jets are able to deal from a strength to shore up a weakness.  Additionally Eberle has a bit of an admiration society in Winnipeg, mostly due to his heroics in the 2008 World Junior Championships.  There is little doubt he would be welcomed with open arms.

But from the Oilers’ perspective, would this trade be an imbalanced one?  Trouba is still finding his potential and with his contract demands and shows signs of being a problem child (combined wih whispers of late night bad boy behaviour) is this a trade the Oilers will regret?  Potentially, yes.  But it’s a risk the Oilers should take and the contract concerns about Trouba can be explained away as pre-negotiation positioning.  Trouba’s antics likely indicate he does want a trade, but not necessarily to an American team.  More than likely he wants the opportunity to be unchallenged on right side and put up some points that will translate into a big pay-day.  In Winnipeg he’s intermittently playing behind Byfuglien, and that won’t help him pad his stats.  As for whispers of bad behaviour, at this point they’re only whispers, and the Oilers have a strong and recent track record of getting that type of player back on track.

Now circling back to Eberle, the Oilers would need to find a way to replace the 20 – 30 goals he provides and that would be a challenge.  Scoring is the hardest thing to do in hockey, and Eberle does it better than anyone else on the Oilers.  Not to mention the fact the Oilers actually score fewer goals per game than most teams, including Winnipeg.  But considering the scoring value Eberle provides, the harsh reality is the production of a scoring winger can be replaced with far greater ease than a top pairing defenceman.  And lordy the Oilers know this better than anyone.  David Perron, for example was coming off a 30 goal campaign when he was traded for mid first round pick.  This same pick, and more, was traded for defensive prospect Griffin Reinhart, who ended up spending most of the season in the minors.  Sounds like giving up a lot for not a lot to me.  And should the Oilers look to free agency or elsewhere to find a replacement for Eberle, the best available would likely be lining up for the opportunity to play with Mcdavid and be a part of the magic.  So While losing Eberle would hurt, the pain would go away quicker than the chronic migraines that come from watching a sub-par D.

Is a Trouba For Eberle Trade Too Remote?

Winnipeg Jets GM: Kevin Cheveldayoff

There is no doubt this player swap is a bit of a stretch.  But hey, at 5’7″ stretch is my middle name. Realistically the biggest obstacle to this trade is Jets GM Chevaldayoff and his unwillingness to take calculated risks.  If Chevy was very creative he could swap Trouba for Eberle, and then Myers plus (prospect or pick) for Hamonic.  However, in Cheveldayoff’s five years as GM he has made only two trades that involved players trading places, and he only made those trades (Kane, Ladd) because he had to.  The guy is like Steve Tambelini on steroids when it comes to methodical indecisiveness.  Nonetheless, a Trouba-Eberle trade does make sense for both teams.  For the Oilers it would be a shame to miss out on Seth Jones, and possibly Hamonic or a potenital opportunity with Trouba.  Lets hope Chiarelli can make the most of what is left out there for young right hand D with promise.

Five Trades I’d Like to See the Oilers Make

Trade me right f*cking now!

With the NHL trade deadline making it’s decent sooner than later, I reckon it’s time to get into some hypotheticals and create some stir. In my opinion, the Edmonton Oilers are an improving team but they are lacking some key elements found in the teams that brought coach Todd McLellan’s San Jose Sharks and general manager Peter Chiarelli’s Boston Bruins Success.

I feel that the Oilers are lacking in the following:

  • Veteran Playoff-Experienced Leadership – I don’t think this team has a definitive leader that everyone looks up to. No Chara, no Thornton. Hendricks is a dandy veteran and Hall is an emotional guy but I don’t see the team buckling up and following those two into the trenches.
  • Intelligent Puck-Moving Defenceman – Jultz, I’m sorry, but he’s not going to cut it and as good as Oscar Klefbom is, he’s not the guy you’re looking for here. Sekera is okay, Davidson too but there’s not-a-one guy who can move the puck fast enough or smart enough on this Oilers team.
  • Shooters – Have you watched the Oilers PP or whenever they get set up in the offensive zone? How many cute little passes do they try to make before the other team takes the puck away and sends it down-ice? They need a trigger man and for some reason Yakupov isn’t getting the chances or taking advantage of the one he does have. Eberle is doing well now but he does well every year when the playoffs are out of reach and he’s just as guilty of making those cute plays as the others.
  • Physical, Tenacious, Fearless Wingers – McLellan and Chiarelli want a better cycling team down low? Well players that are slight in stature won’t last long in that system. The team needs size and puck protection on their wings. If Nuge comes back and Draisaitl is moved to the wing, this could be a redundant element.

Now just to preface, I don’t want the team to make all of these trade. That’s just nonsense. I would, however, like to see the team make some considerable moves. I really think that the team is due for a big shake up and this might be the last season where we see Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and Justin Schultz playing for the Oilers.

These aren’t rumors I’ve heard through the grapevine nor are they proposals I’ve ripped off of HFBoards or Facebook or Twitter. They’re simply cannon fodder for conversation, nothing more and nothing less. Besides, I’m sure there are much smarter people over at HFBoards with much better suggestions. I’m just trying to have a bit of fun and hope you guys will join in.

Trade #1

Justin Schultz to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 3rd round pick.

Reasoning: To get him the F out-of-town. He’s harshing my mellow and the Lightning could use a RH dman to cover for Jason Garrison while he sits on IR. The Oilers need to stock up on early round picks too. Their system is bone dry.

Trade #2

Teddy Purcell to the Chicago Blackhawks for Mark McNeil.

Reasoning: Every likes Teddy and he deserves to go to a team that has a good chance at winning the cup. The Oilers would get back a 22-year-old, hard-working, gritty forward who scores at nearly a point-per-game pace in the AHL. He’s 6’2″ and nearly 200lbs and plays a style suited to the bottom six. Regularly spoken of by Bob Stauffer when it comes to trade rumors between the Hawks and Oilers.

Trade #3

Taylor Hall to the Winnipeg Jets for Jacob Trouba, Kyle Connor, and Andrew Ladd.

Reasoning: As I’ve said in the past, I do not believe that Taylor Hall is in Peter Chiarelli’s long-term plans. He’s not afraid to make the difficult move either. Jacob Trouba is a highly regarded young dman who is struggling in his third NHL season but he’s coming up in trade rumors a bit more frequently now. The American-born defenseman plays the right side and is a restricted free agent this summer. Trouba reminds me of Dave Manson a bit, he’s mean and he’s got a cannon. Left winger Andrew Ladd is the leader this team has been clambering for since Bill Guerin left, and Kyle Connor is tearing up the NCAA Jack Eichel-style.

For Oilers fans, yes it would hurt to lose a talent like Hall and the Oilers would have to work hard to get Trouba and Ladd signed but every year Hall plays I can’t stop thinking about other elite wingers that had to go elsewhere to experience success. Marian Gaborik, Rick Nash, and Ilya Kovalchuk are all examples. And I look at a defense that is built around Oscar Klefbom, Andrej Sekera, Darnell Nurse, Jacob Trouba, and Brandon Davidson and think, “Yup, that’s not too shabby! Expensive down the road but effective.”

Jets fans can rejoice in potentially having one of the best lines in hockey in Hall-Little-Wheeler as well as a defence that includes Dustin Byfuglien, Tyler Myers and Josh Morrisey.

Trade #4

Jordan Eberle to the New York Islanders for Kyle Okposo and Josh Ho-Sang

Reasoning: Here comes the muscle. Okposo would be the Nathan Horton-like player Chiarelli is looking for. I added Ho-Sang here because he’s a headache with tremendous potential but is also a wildcard AND Okposo is a free agent at season’s end who is looking for some top dollar. Another note on Ho-Sang, the Oilers are truly lacking some real offensive prospects in their cupboards. Sleypyshev? Is he the only real offensive gem (if you can consider him a gem) down in Bakersfield that is an Oilers draft pick?

Ok now. I’m sure you’re fuming over that Hall idea but calm your tits. Yes, Eberle and McDavid are having success together and Ebs looks like a man possessed. He’s fun to watch again but I urge you to look up the names Blair MacDonald and Rob Brown… He’s a complimentary winger who doesn’t fit into McLellan’s and Chiarelli’s system in my opinion. McDavid is THAT GUY who makes others better, right Benoit Pouliot?

Trade #5 (If the Oilers win the draft lottery)

The first round pick to the Buffalo Sabres for Rasmus Ristolainen and the Sabres first round pick.

Reasoning: Auston Matthews-Jack Eichel-Ryan O’Reilly… That is a 1-2-3 punch if I’ve seen one. I think it’d hurt for them to lose the big Finn Ristolainen but they signed Cody Franson to be an impact defender and he’s playing third pairing… Perhaps he’s being deployed incorrectly. With Brendan Guhle coming in next year or Chad Ruhwedel, they’ve got cover for that #6 spot in the defense.

Edmonton simply doesn’t need any more 1st overalls let alone high impact forwards. They’re dying on the back-end and a deal like this would do wonders I believe.

So what do you think about my trades? Let me know in the comments below and don’t forget to check out the new Better Call Hall tee below! It’s on for $14 until Tuesday I believe, then she goes back up to regular price.
