The Fourth Period’s Latest Trade Watch List Has Edmonton Oilers Interested In Five Skaters

Late last night, NHL Rumors website “The Fourth Period”, ran by insider David Pagnotta, published their 2020 Top-25 Trade Watch List.

For the time being, nobody off of the Edmonton Oilers roster was found on that list, but interestingly enough, the site publishes who they’ve been told are interested in the players that are posted and the Oilers are named no fewer than five times.

#6 – Jake Gardiner (LD)

With him having three years left at a shade over $4M/yr, I don’t see this trade happening in the best of times… Does it work if Carolina eats 50% of his salary and offers a sweetener? Maybe. That’s a lot more palatable but even then I don’t see him being a fit on the Oilers. They’ve got Caleb Jones on the cheap for the next two years and I would like to think that he’s just as good at what Gardiner does if not better.

#10 – Matt Dumba (RD)

Another player with a massive contract for the next three seasons. It’s just not going to work with the Oilers as the trade partner because Minnesota is looking for a top-6 center. Meaning, they’ll be asking for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, and for the time, that’s a non-starter for Edmonton.

#11 – Alec Martinez (LD)

Martinez is 33yrs old and makes $4M/yr. There could be a fit at the trade deadline for the Oilers but I don’t believe that Edmonton would trade for him any earlier than that. Besides, they have Kris Russell to play the role Martinez would be filling if he were to suit up for the Oilers.

#18 – Kyle Palmieri (W)

The Smithtown, NY native is in the final year of his contract that will pay him $4.635 this season. In any other year, I’d say the Oilers could really use a sniper like Palmieri, but not this year. GM Ken Holland really ramped up the additions on the wing and unless Dominik Kahun really struggles, my belief is that there are probably better trade partners out there for the NJ Devils.

#20 – Alex Goligoski (D)

How does Pagnotta do up these lists? Good Christ man. Every defender he says Edmonton is interested in is way overpaid and the Oilers have players who are just as good, if not better, and younger and cheaper… I just don’t see Holland going for these overpaid vets when he can keep his powder dry and in the event that a big-ticket becomes available, he can pounce on it.
