Which Power Forward Should the Oilers Go For?

Are the Kings targeting Sam Reinhart?

Recently, Darren Dreger said that the Kings could actually be trying to add two top six forwards via trade or free agency. One potential target via free agency is Zach Hyman of the Toronto Maple Leafs who is expected to make at least $6.5 million on his next deal. When it comes to a trade, RFA Sam Reinhart may be the best fit for a team looking to get better and younger at the same time.

Would Rob Blake move Alex Turcotte and a draft pick to land the 25 year-old forward? When he was asked if he agreed with Doughty’s sentiments he said, “100%! The feeling is the same in the front office… We need to add to the roster to get better.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Alex Turcotte for Sam Reinhart? One for One? Is that what we’re talking about here? On paper, it looks pretty good for both teams and if LA can manage to bring in Zach Hyman too, that’d be some good work done by Blake. Would it be enough to satisfy Drew Doughty though?

I just don’t think adding two forwards would be enough to move the needle that far. Now, if they managed to bring in Seth Jones too, that’d suggest something else entirely…

But what are the odds that the Kings pull off that kind of offseason though?

The Two Biggest Decisions for the Avs

Peter Baugh of The Athletic writes that the team needs to determine how much they’re willing to pay Landeskog on his next deal, all while fighting away other teams that may express interest in him this summer. He writes:

  • “Colorado has to be prepared for a wing-hungry team with a good chunk of cap space — one like the Oilers or Kings — to throw big money at Landeskog. Matching that might mean moving contracts, and Sakic will have to determine the sacrifices he’s willing to make to keep his fan-favorite captain.”

BLH’s Thoughts: I’ve talked speculated upon a scenario where the Oilers signed Gabriel Landeskog calling the potential signing Ken Holland’s “Shanahan moment”. What I don’t know is how much it would cost Edmonton but surely they’d have to stump up more than $6.5M a year for the Avs captain along with max term.

Now, if the question on the docket is who do you pick between Zach Hyman and Landeskog. I don’t think that choice is difficult, you take the Swedish power forward who produces at nearly a point-per-game level, you take the LWer who’s scored 45pts in 49 post-season games.

The gap in talent level between the two players is significant and if that means paying extra to get the better player, why not go for it?

Expect the unexpected, right?

DUCKS PLAN ON EXPLORING TRADE MARKET

The Anaheim Ducks are among the teams expected to be very active this off-season as they look to add some immediate firepower to their roster for the 2021-22 campaign.

It’s believed the Ducks remain interested in Eichel.

The Ducks have just over $22.5 million in cap space going into next season and have plenty of space to add to their roster. Murray is expected to continue to shop the likes of Henrique and Silfverberg, but given their cap flexibility, he might not be overly interested in adding to the deal in order for a team to take on either of their contracts.

The Ducks have made it clear they have no interest in moving top prospects Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale, though other young highly touted players could be available, including Isac Lundestrom, Sam Steel, Jacob Perreault and Tracey Brayden.

BLH’s Thoughts: As we’ve posted here before, there’s some belief that the Ducks could be in on Edmonton Oilers UFA forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins as well and the two teams did have conversations regarding Rickard Rakell at the trade deadline this year. Depending on how Bob Murray’s summer goes, it’s possible that those conversations could start up again.

If you’re the Ducks and you’ve got Brendan Guhle, Jacob Larsson, and Josh Mahura coming on the left side of your defense, would you consider moving on from Hampus Lindholm? Maybe including him in a trade for Jack Eichel?

I’m just wondering how Anaheim could get their hands on Eichel without giving up Trevor Zegras or Jamie Drysdale whilst considering the Sabres’ captain’s value is falling daily? Why not send Lindholm, Troy Terry, a first rounder and Jackson LaCombe to Buffalo for Captain Jack? Is that too much? Not enough?
