NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Philadelphia Flyers: Sean Couturier is out two weeks with a shoulder injury after taking a hit from Pittsburgh’s Jared McCann.
  • New York Islanders: Starting netminder was forced to leave the game last night after taking a shot up high in warm-up leaving rookie netminder Ilya Sorokin to take his place.
  • Columbus Blue Jackets: Regarding Pierre-Luc Dubois,
    • Friedman: “I think there are a bunch of teams who made very serious pitches for Dubois before the season began. Columbus has made the decision to see where their season goes before they decide to make this trade. I’m told things are quiet, famous last words…”
    • Johnston: “I don’t see an urgency for the club to move the player. If they make this type of deal, they have to replace him immediately. I don’t think it’s a futures type of package.”
  • Winnipeg Jets: Tucker Poolman played for the Jets in Thursday’s opener against Calgary, the team had the day off yesterday, and today Poolman was added to the League’s COVID protocol list. So the Jets canceled practice Saturday out of an abundance of caution.
  • Edmonton Oilers: They lost Anton Forsberg on waivers, Mike Smith was injured, and they were down a couple of goalies. They picked up Troy Grosenick on waivers today but because of quarantine situations, Edmonton will not have Grosenick or Olivier Rodrigue, who’s flying in from Austria, until at least Jan.27th.
    • Friedman: “What the Oilers are looking at is: are there any amateur goaltenders in quarantine in those two cities they could use as a No. 3 in those two particular situations. That’s how they’re going to try to navigate this for the next little while.”
    • Friedman: “Ken Holland did call someone who he is very familiar with, Jimmy Howard, and the answer from Jimmy Howard was “I’m happy with my family. I’m coaching with my kids.” He’s putting retirement in motion and I expect an announcement on one of his social media channels probably in the next couple of days.”
  • Florida Panthers: On Keith Yandle and his ironman streak,
    • Johnston: “The fact that it’s not definitely going to end on Sunday is a development in itself. Keith Yandle didn’t practice with the NHL group for Florida all week but on Saturday he did join them half-way through that practice. He did take reps on the PP unit. They play Sunday against Chicago and there is the hope that Keith Yandle will play in that game. He is on the outs with the new management group there, so we’ll just have to see how that one goes.”
  • Pittsburgh Penguins: On Winnipeg Jets holdout Jack Roslovic,
    • Friedman: “The Pittsburgh Penguins have started the season 0-2-0, Ron, and we know Jim Rutherford is not afraid. I understand Pittsburgh is very interested, we’ll have to see if there’s a match.”
