NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Michael Russo (The Athletic): Read the incredible story of former NHL All-Star Mark Parrish’s journey from alcoholic to sobriety and how it wouldn’t have been possible without the help of former agent Brian Lawton.
    • “If Brian Lawton had not been there at the perfect time, the perfect place, the perfect vulnerable state in my brother’s life, we might not be talking about this right now,”

BLH’s Thoughts: I’m sure most of us have had some interaction with a person who’s battled alcohol or is battling it and I think we can all say, it’s a devastating disease on every front. So, when we hear of someone, famous or not, who has found a way to overcome such a great challenge, we have to applaud their efforts and share the news with as many people as possible and by doing that there’s a chance we give hope to an individual who is still struggling to ask for help.

Good on Mr. Parrish and good on Brian Lawton, Ben Clymer, his wife and children, and everyone else involved in helping get this former NHLer back on his feet.

  • Sean Reynolds (Sportsnet): Regarding Winnipeg Jets winger Patrik Laine’s future with the club,
    • “I think if a deal was going to be made at this point, it would’ve been made. At the same time, he’s a diminishing asset because as of right now, he’s got three years of team control over him, after this year it’s down to two and one, which is going to make it harder for the Jets to get a return on him back. I think at some point, time constraints will force him out the door.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Hear me out for a few seconds. The Jets want a center. The Oilers could use an elite goal-scorer who is durable.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins for Laine. Which GM says no?

Nuge could make a few extra bucks for Winnipeg to buy some more horses and Laine could score a few more goals in Edmonton and partner up with old buddy Jesse Puljujarvi.

BLH’s Thoughts: Some more fantastic news! We’re all so happy for you, Oskar!

  • Chris Johnston (Sportsnet): Former San Jose Sharks forward Melker Karlsson has signed with Skelleftea of the SHL and is skipping out on the 2020-21 NHL season. He’ll be spending the year in Sweden.

BLH’s Thoughts: Karlsson is going to be playing with Phillip Broberg! That is IF Broberg doesn’t destroy the World Juniors and stick in Edmonton when they’re done…

  • Luke Fox (Sportsnet): Says the Seattle Kraken will most likely focus on Toronto Maple Leafs defenders Justin Holl and Travis Dermott at the upcoming expansion draft.

BLH’s Thoughts: Alex Kerfoot is the guy whose name is being bandied about. I think the Leafs hope that Seattle will take him and his inflated salary instead of one of their promising young d-men.

  • Pat Steinberg (Sportsnet): Doesn’t think the Calgary Flames should bring UFA defenceman Travis Hamonic back this season.
    • “Generally, no I don’t think the Flames should be bringing back Travis Hamonic and that’s not a hard no, but ya know, depending on what a contract looks like, and looking at their cap situation, looking at their blue line situation right now, no I don’t think it’s a need right now that it’s a need the Calgary Flames really need to explore at this point.”

BLH’s Thoughts: You can never have enough good defenders. Especially when you’re going to be going through the Battle of Alberta 8 or 9 times in a given season… I think it would be daft of the Flames to outright dismiss the potential addition of Hamonic.
