On Corski and Fenski and Edmonton Oilers’ fourth lineski
  • “I’ve been doing analytics way longer than a lot of these analytics people and mine are actually what happened in the game,” said Tippett, as reported by Post Media’s Robert Tychkowski. “We use way more analytics than people know, but they’re ones that actually matter.”
  • “The NHL stats are just, let’s just say average at best. To me, they’re not useful.”
  • “If you are being bombarded every night with Grade A chances, now I have a concern, but I go more on scoring chances and legitimate shots, not just pucks that are flipped at the net from the other end.”
  • Corsi and Fenwick are at the very bottom of a pyramid that also includes shots on goal, scoring chances, high danger chances, and expected goals, to reference the package of “shot count” stats offered by one popular fancy stats source, Natural Stat Trick.
  • One thing Tippett is absolutely right about: not all “Corski” are created equal. By that first-level metric of shots directed towards goal, a 65 footer from the point that doesn’t get through traffic counts just the same as a one-timer from the slot.
  • Fact is that the Oilers have been ahead a whole lot more than they’ve been behind this early season. Make it 181 minutes with the lead, just 56 trailing. Such an imbalance is apt to filter down into the underlying numbers.
  • …early analysis both by eye and by the numbers — Corski, Fenski, and the rest — suggest that Holland’s construction project is not yet complete.

BLH’s Thoughts: When I decide to dig into the fancies to answer a question about the Oilers or an individual player, I know that going into the endeavor I’m working with inferior numbers compared to what the teams are using. I also know that depending on the narrative, I can construct a story that supports my POV from those statistics and to be honest, that’s a pretty sad state of affairs because if a lowly sofa blogger like myself can do it, what about somebody who’s actually quite intelligent?

What I’m hoping is that with all the new tracking cameras in the arenas and the chips that’ve been installed within all of the players equipment, the public will have access to better advanced metrics and therefore be able to see things more akin to what the professionals are using. At the very least, it would make gambling a lot more interesting.

Now, with all that being said, I learned something new from Tippett’s avail. I learned he cares less about how many shots against his team takes on and more so that his team’s high danger chances are limited.

I was under the impression that a hockey coach would truly prefer to prevent the other team from getting any shots let alone low or mid-danger ones just to reduce the odds of being scored on. I thought if a team allowed a lot of shots, they were playing poorly defensively.

So, there ya go. It wouldn’t be a good day if you didn’t learn something new, would it?

  • The Edmonton Oilers lost a winnable game and there is lots to work on before Saturday. The 5-0-0 start buys the team some separation, so losing two points to a non-conference rival isn’t the end of the world.
  • At some point the goalie position is going to need an upgrade. I think Mikko Koskinen can stop enough pucks to stay in the league, but don’t believe he’ll be stopping them for Edmonton in the playoffs.
  • For his Oilers career, Mike Smith’s save percentage is .912. Mikko Koskinen’s is .909. One guy has a contract for next season, the other does not have a contract for 2022-23.
  • I do believe Edmonton will add a stronger option by the deadline.
  • Koskinen didn’t look sharp and the Flyers have several impressive shooters, that’s a recipe for trouble. Smith has the two-year deal and the lower cap hit, so Koskinen makes more sense as the deadline exit. I don’t think there’s a giant gap between the two goalies, although Dave Tippett likes Smith and that’s probably reason enough to choose him over the Finn. Coaches are people, too.
  • Koskinen was not sharp, but the Oilers did miss some great chances, too. If you can trade for a goalie upgrade today, then go for it. I don’t think it’s out there, and Koskinen will have a cap hit of $1 million or so at the deadline.
  • The third pair needs some help and I would slide Tyler Benson on to the fourth line Saturday. The problem is he doesn’t play center, and Devin Shore got slammed 0-7 shots at five on five last night. Calling Ryan McLeod?
  • I know the Yamamoto demotion is coming, doesn’t mean I have to like it.

BLH’s Thoughts: So this is how it’s going to go every time the Oilers lose and Smith or Koskinen let in a shit goal or two. Not a mention of how many chances the Oilers big guns failed to capitalize on some golden chances because they do enough heavy lifting as it is.

It’s funny, I’ve been waiting for Yamo to get demoted for over 30 games going back to last season and including the playoffs and Dave Tippett has done the opposite with Killer.

If I’m not mistaken, early season trades are not something uncommon to Ken Holland. When he acquired Igor Larionov in Detroit , that was a December (2000) trade, but that said, he’s more likely to make a deal before the season starts or in February or March.

So, while there’s a slight chance the Oilers could make an early trade, I don’t think it’ll come. The odds are on him keeping his powder dry until salaries are cheaper and easier to move and that would be closer to the trade deadline on March 21st, 2022 this season.

This is the team we’re going to see for a few months yet, so get comfortable with all of its warts.

  • If the Blackhawks do let Colliton go, Rick Tocchet seems like a prime candidate to take over as the new bench boss. The former NHL power forward took the reins as Arizona’s head coach back in 2017. He amassed a 125-131-34 record with the Coyotes during his tenure.
  • Many names are being bandied about as the next Blackhawks GM. Veteran executive Jeremy Rutherford is still highly regarded and could get the nod. Some suggested that former Blackhawk Eddie Olcyck be given a chance at guiding the franchise back to respectability. Others feel Kevin Weekes has been long overlooked for such a position as well.
  • However, considering where the Blackhawks are on the ice, one name stands out. Jeff Gorton, guided the New York Rangers from an aging team through a rebuild. He restocked a barren prospect pipeline into one of the best in the NHL in just a few years (lottery picks aside).

Evan Bouchard’s evolution, in context: Why the Oilers defenceman’s big step forward should surprise no one
  • There wasn’t ever much question that Evan Bouchard had the offensive skills to play in the NHL… The question was always whether he could defend as well as he could attack.
  • …he’s averaging 3:28 per game while short-handed, slotting in next to Darnell Nurse on Edmonton’s top penalty kill.
  • It’s also a number that tells us at least two things. First, and most important, it says Bouchard is committed to becoming a true all-situations defenceman. Second, it tells us this coaching staff is determined to help him get there.
  • Though the coaches took flak last season for failing to find room for a fourth right-shot defenceman, the truth is that the organization has paid great attention to Bouchard’s development since Ken Holland took over as GM.
  • Bouchard broke into the AHL in the 2019 playoffs. He scored eight points in eight games for Bakersfield… He got offensive zone starts and power-play time and scored points in the role of a specialist. The heavy lifting was done by older prospects and minor-league journeymen… All that changed the following year. Head coach Jay Woodcroft and defensive coach Dave Manson went from spotting Bouchard to using him as a true No. 1 defenceman.
  • Bouchard was London’s first pick in the 2015 OHL draft… Bouchard was a big deal and could have acted the part. Instead, he bought into the things a very successful London program wanted him to do. Then he went and did the same thing with Woodcroft and Manson in the AHL. Now he looks to be repeating the pattern with Tippett and Playfair in the NHL.
  • After winning over coaches in London and Bakersfield, he seems well on his way to doing the same thing in Edmonton.

BLH’s Thoughts: The cream tends to rise to the top, doesn’t it? Some will say he’s grinded his way to where he is and others will say that he was always destined to get there with his natural abilities. I’m not sure where I land on that debate because if hard work was the secret to success, construction workers would be the richest guys/girls on the planet.

Guys like Bouchard tend to succeed at whatever they put their minds to and lucky for Oilers fans, he’s decided to lean into the game of hockey. It wouldn’t shock me if he became a very good coach and possibly a GM when his playing days are over. He’s that gifted.

Oilers’ Top 10 Prospects of the 2021-22 Season
  • #10. Ilya Konovalov, Goaltender
  • #9. Carter Savoie, Left Wing
  • #8. Xavier Bourgault, Center
  • #7. Tyler Benson, Left Wing
  • #6. Raphael Lavoie, Center/ Right Wing
  • #5. Stuart Skinner, Goaltender
  • #4. Ryan McLeod, Center
  • #3. Philip Broberg, Left Defense
  • #2. Dylan Holloway, Center/ Left Wing
  • #1. Evan Bouchard, Right Defense

BLH’s Thoughts: Right… I suppose everybody is entitled to an opinion, even when it’s a tad off… I keed!!! The names are almost right, but the order is a mess I reckon. Here’s my top-ten!

  • Dylan Holloway
  • Philip Broberg
  • Dmitri Samorukov
  • Xavier Bourgault
  • Stuart Skinner
  • Carter Savoie
  • Rafa Lavoie
  • Ty Tullio
  • Phil Kemp
  • Ilya Konovalov

Aside from Stu Skinner and Konovalov because I think a goaltender’s timeline to the NHL is vastly different than that of a skater’s, I’m not prepared to have Benson, McLeod, and Bouchard on a “Prospect’s List” because I don’t really see them as prospects so much anymore. They’re more like tweeners who might fit the specific  requirements of some lists.

Tell ya this, Konovalov is having himself a time down in Bakersfield as he attempts to acclimate to the North American ice. I think the safe thing to do with this young man is to leave him be and re-visit him in January and again in March to see if his game has improved.

THE ATHLETIC: Mark Lazerus and Scott Powers listed their potential candidates to replace Stan Bowman as general manager of the Chicago Blackhawks.

  • Among the notable names on their list were NHL senior director of player safety Patrick Burke, analytics guru Meghan Chayka, former Los Angeles Kings assistant GM Michael Futa, former Rangers GM Jeff Gorton, former player and current TV commentator Ed Olczyk, Carolina Hurricanes assistant GM Eric Tulsky and NHL analyst Kevin Weekes.

DAILY FACEOFF: Frank Seravalli included Montreal Canadiens assistant GM Scott Mellanby, Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray and former Hurricanes and Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford.

TSN: Darren Dreger believes the Blackhawks need experience in the GM’s chair going forward. He suggested Rutherford, Gorton and former Penguins and New Jersey Devils GM Ray Shero.

BLH’s Thoughts: Reckon anybody with a sane mind is going to touch the Hawks with a 200ft pole anytime soon? The guy they installed to replace Bowman has been with the team for 11 years… If that’s not enough experience to see the season through, I don’t really know what to say.

If I had to guess, I’d say the team would go with somebody young who’s trying to establish him/herself in the league that has their ear to the ground when it comes to society today. A candidate who might be considered a real proponent for social justice…

‘I didn’t know anything’ – Oilers Keith addresses Blackhawks investigation
  • The Jenner and Block report says Blackhawks management, including head coach Joel Quenneville, were made aware of vague allegations against Aldrich in a brief meeting on May 23, but that Blackhawks players were not part of that discussion.
  • With the Chicago Blackhawks getting set for a Stanley Cup final series with the Philadelphia Flyers, Keith says the players were locked into to the task at hand with complete tunnel vision.
  • “I didn’t know anything,” he said. “My whole focus was right in the moment, doing what we had to do as a team. As one of the leaders on that team, our focus was trying to win hockey games.”
  • “Maybe that’s hard for people to understand, but that’s the truth. Not everybody knew. And I didn’t know that those things happened to that person.”
  • Players are absolutely insulated during a deep playoff run, with distractions deliberately kept outside the bubble, so it’s conceivable that the facts of the assault didn’t surface in the 16 days between the initial May 23 meeting and the end of the playoffs on June 9.
  • …any players who did hear rumours likely assumed that management was handling it.
  • “If I was aware of it, or multiple players were aware of what was going on, it would be a different story.”
  • “If it happened now and it was something I was made aware of, for sure, you have to say something, there has to be something done. It’s obviously unacceptable. It’s brutal what that guy had to endure and deal with and probably still deals with today.”

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t have much to say on this one. I feel for Beach, but at the same time, I’m incredible proud of the young man for doing what he had to do to get justice. Who knows how different his career would’ve been had the Hawks dealt with the matter at the time?

In my opinion, the balance of power has to shift to the players at some point. You have these predators out there who abuse said power to get what they want and you’ve got the players who are sacrificing everything to achieve their goals.

In addition to that, there has to be a feeling as if the players are betraying the team if they report any incidents and that goes against the very nature of being a team. All for one, one for all, no? Who wants to be that guy who derails a team’s championship run or a friend’s chances of getting drafted? I’m not saying those are justifiable actions, I’m saying if the players/staff knew they were protected and better off in the long run if they stuck together in these instances, how many of these predators could be reported?

So the question becomes, how can this element of sporting culture be improved?

As for the cancel culture in Edmonton (and other places) going after Duncan Keith, he didn’t say what you wanted him to say, boo hoo. He told you his truth and that sucks for you that it doesn’t line up with the “truth” YOU wanted him to give. If he didn’t know, he didn’t know and you can’t force that to change. If you think he’s lying, prove that he’s lying! If you can’t, sit down and shut the hell up. In fact, what you should be doing is pointing your anger at Brad Aldrich and using all your efforts to get that guy off the streets… Get your priorities straight FFS!

Probably wouldn’t shock anybody to learn that the same folks going after Keith are the same ones who disagreed with the trade that brought him here…

Edmonton Oilers forward ranked as one of the top bargains in the NHL this year
  • This just in from CapFriendly, news that so far this year Edmonton has one of the top bargain players in the entire NHL in Jesse Puljujarvi.
  • When you compare salary to points production, Puljujarvi ranks second in the entire NHL, behind only Detroit rookie Lucas Raymond. Puljujajarvi, who has a cap hit of $1,175,000 has eight points in five games. Raymond has seven points in six games, but makes $925,000…
  • For Edmonton to compete this year and in years to come, it will need a steady supply of young forwards on value contracts to help out in the Core-12…
  • Puljujarvi’s two-way play has been strong. He’s confident carrying and shooting the puck, he’s winning his share of board battles and has done well in his own zone.
  • He’s ranked as the top Oilers winger when it comes to individual Grade A scoring chances plus-minus.
  • At even strength he’s made major contributions to 11 Grade A chances and he’s made major mistakes on just three against, making him +1.5 Grade A chances per game.

BLH’s Thoughts: We’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg with this young man, who, ironically, is about the same size as an iceberg. It won’t matter where the Oilers put him in the lineup, he’s going to be a force of nature at every turn.

Right now, he’s wrecking Patrik Laine in the fancy stats battle.

Do you think he’s going to 4x or 6x his current deal in the summer?

  • Mark Kiszla of the Denver Post: The Colorado Avalanche are off to a slow start, and if it continues, could GM Joe Sakic look to make a bold move?
  • TSN: Kyle Davidson was named the interim GM of the Chicago Blackhawks, but his inexperience will have them searching for an experienced GM according to Darren Dreger, and there are several possible GMs available.
  • Arthur Staple: “No one asked, but Hawks next two calls should be to Ed Olczyk for president/hockey ops and Jeff Gorton for GM.

Oilers & Hurricanes Both Benefiting From Bear/Foegele Trade
  • Unfortunately, the last play Ethan Bear made as an Edmonton Oiler led to the tying goal in Game 4 against the Winnipeg Jets in the 2021 Playoffs.
  • On July 28, 2021, the Oilers traded the 124th overall pick from the 2015 NHL Draft to the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Warren Foegele.
  • Holland opted for more experience on the right side. He re-signed Tyson Barrie and added Cody Ceci, leaving only one spot for Bear or Evan Bouchard. Maybe because of his 10th-overall draft pedigree, Holland chose the latter.
  • Foegele has solidified the third line. With Zack Kassian and Derek Ryan, the three of them have created an identity.
  • This season, Foegele, Ryan and Kassian have combined for five goals and four assists in five games.
  • …they’ve combined for 34 hits in five games with center Ryan, boasting a 59.1% faceoff percentage (FO%).
  • Through five games, Bear has two assists, is a plus-4, and averaging18:56 of ice time. He’s also filled in on the top pairing with defenseman Jaccob Slavin.

BLH’s Thoughts: This is great news. I’m very happy for Ethan that things are working out for him in Raleigh.

My personal belief is that there were a few reasons as to why Bear was moved including,

  • Evan Bouchard being chosen over Bear as the team’s top RHD of the future.
  • Bear himself being comfortable with a move considering the racist abuse he took after the playoffs.
  • Internal pressure to move the player after coming into camp late, his slow start to the year, and some unfortunate poor performances in key moments.

I reckon there were some financial considerations in play but at the end of the day, the team simply chose between Evan Bouchard and Ethan Bear, a choice I believe was the right one and will continue to be the right one until both defenders are done and retired.

The two questions that will always linger is, what if Adam Larsson had chosen to stay and how would’ve that changed Ken Holland’s off-season?

The Athletic

How hot streaks, shuffles and slumps will determine the fate of the Oilers’ second line in 2021-22
  • Four players have occupied the three forward slots on the Oilers’ second line so far this season: Leon Draisaitl (4-7-11), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (0-7-7), Zach Hyman (5-1-6) and Kailer Yamamoto (0-0-0), in order of point total (all through five games).
  • The gap in scoring totals for the four men is shocking at first blush, and potentially devastating for Yamamoto’s place in the lineup.
  • Added to his scoring slump in the second half of last season (one goal in his final 25 games), the five scoreless games this season place him under the microscope.
  • A five-game sample is very small and wouldn’t be of much concern if not for the final 25 games of 2020-21. This is now an unusually long slump.
  • Yamamoto is in some danger, because he isn’t an established NHL player yet.
  • The Oilers play 15 more games before the end of November. Odds are that Yamamoto will score two or three goals before December.

BLH’s Thoughts: What do the odds say about a winger going that length of time without scoring whilst at the same time playing with two off the NHL’s elite playmakers?

See, I think there’s a lot of pressure to get this roster right immediately. For example, do you remember that grade A chance Yamo missed off of a feed from Leon behind Philly’s net last night? What if Phil Kessel was on the end of that pass or Rickard Rakell of Filip Forsberg? We might be talking about the Oilers starting the year 6-0-0 instead of a shaky performance where their sloppy play caught up to them…

Will the Hawks eventually trade Toews or Kane?

  • Considering the state of the Hawks, Toews could be open to moving to a contender at the trade deadline for a chance to win another Cup. It will be interesting to see where he could land but Vegas and New York could be possible depending on how much salary is retained.

Latest Jack Eichel speculation

Elliotte Friedman was a guest on Sportnet’s The Jeff Marek Show and started to discuss possible trade destinations again for Jack Eichel. Here’s a list of teams mentioned.

  • Avalanche: Kicked tires, nothing close
  • Blue Jackets: Same as Avs
  • Bruins: Doesn’t think Bruins can offer Sabres what they want
  • Ducks: Haven’t heard much recently, quiet
  • Flames: Did due diligence, could be a player
  • Golden Knights: Need help now, Eichel won’t be ready due to surgery
  • Hurricanes: May be an interesting team
  • Kraken: Haven’t heard if they are really interested but possible
  • Rangers: Extending Zibanejad ends it unless Sabres willing to retain significant salary
  • Wild: No cap space

The Edmonton Oilers out goaltender-ed in a 5-3 loss to Philadelphia: Cult of Hockey Player Grades
  • MIKKO KOSKINEN . 4. The difference tonight was goaltending and it was a battle the Oilers lost.
  • CONNOR McDAVID . 8. I liked his game a lot. McDavid had 8 shots on goal, including his 7 th goal of the year off a deflection… 71% on his draws, by far and away the best on the club.
  • KAILER YAMAMOTO . 4. Sawed-off on chances for/against in an otherwise quiet effort despite playing with 2 line mates who had good games. Hmmm.
  • DEREK RYAN . 3. No shots, no hits, -2 for Ryan. Just 22% on draws. His least impressive game of the year.
  • TYSON BARRIE . 7. His best game of the year by a country mile… Led all Oilers D-men in All Events CF (31-13, 70%).
  • DEVIN SHORE . 3… the club was out-chanced 1-9 with Shore on the ice at evens. I wonder of he’s not quite 100% yet?
  • BRENDAN PERLINI . 3. Always be very cautious of terrific training camp by unlikely suspects.
  • RYAN NUGENT-HOPKINS . 7. He is off to a very good start indeed. Played 24:44 including lots of both special teams.
  • EVAN BOUCHARD . 7. Evan Bouchard’s 40-foot stretch pass to spring Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on a breakaway was a thing of beauty… looked right at home on the top pairing in 23:22 of work.

BLH’s Thoughts: McDavid was magical again. He tried his damnedest to put the team on his back and take the boys to another victory, but it wasn’t to be. The metronome was off kilter. Win the next one against Vancouver (on Hockey Night in Canada?) and all will be forgotten.

I think it’s time to start putting the spotlight on Yamamoto here. Can the team trust him to be the player they need him to be in its top-six right now? Conversely, do the Oilers have somebody who can spot him on Leon’s line? Would it make sense to toss Hyman on that wing and move Foegele up to Connor’s line?

Evan Bouchard was fantastic in this game. Aside from Joel Farabee and his blazing speed that beat Bouch on the outside, Evan has fit in alongside Darnell Nurse very well. Morbidly, I’ve been waiting to see what a bad game looks like from him and he hasn’t shown one yet… Maybe we’re on the verge of seeing somebody very special develop before our eyes?

Honestly, can you think of a player in the last 40 years who could shoot, pass, think the game on both sides of the puck and have the poise Evan does?

To me, he looks like Niklas Lidstrom with Al MacInnis’ shot.

Hyperbole much? Perhaps. But if you look close enough, you can see exactly what I’m talking about.

Flyers end Oilers’ winning streak but McDavid keeps his point run alive
  • The Flyers got 34 stops from their goalie Sherwood Park’s Carter Hart, beat the the top-five Oilers in the face-off circle winning 58 per cent of them and got two goals from Cam Atkinson and others from Nate Thompson, Claude Giroux and Sean Couturier into the empty net in their first road game of the season.
  • But McDavid, who carried a 13-game point streak going back to the last season, kept his current streak alive.

“That could have been some of the best hockey we’ve played all season. Our second period was arguably our best period of the year,” he said. “A couple of mistakes, some bad bounces and we were chasing the game. And once they got the lead in the third, they shut it down. But a really competitive game. Our guys played fast, created lots of chances but we didn’t capitalize.” – Dave Tippett, Oilers Head Coach

  • Koskinen had stopped 83 of 88 shots over two and half games and had a mixed-bag. He made half a dozen outstanding saves but he would like a re-do on Thompson’s after a giveaway to Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Atkinson’s winner that somehow found a hole.
  • Barrie was the Oilers second best player after McDavid, certainly his most complete game of the season.
  • The Oilers had eight shots in their four power plays, with ample zone time, but just the one goal.

BLH’s Thoughts: Plain and simple, I think the Oilers lost because the bottom-six disappeared, Koskinen had a down night and the Flyers have excellent forward depth. Personally, I wonder if Koskinen is 100% and now there’s going to be some pressure on Mike Smith to be healthy for the next game vs. Vancouver on Saturday. If Smitty isn’t good to go, I believe there should be some serious thought into starting Stuart Skinner. Even if he is healthy enough to start, the Canucks have some real crease crashers, like Vasilli Podkolzin, who will go to the net zero f*cks given.

He believes they face three options. They could replace head coach Sheldon Keefe, trade a big-name player like Mitch Marner or “triple down” and stick with the roster they’ve built.

DAILY FACEOFF: Seravalli also reports there’s been “increased chatter” between the Vegas Golden Knights and the Buffalo Sabres about Jack Eichel in recent days… The Golden Knights’ interest could depend on the status of winger Mark Stone… It’s uncertain how long he’ll be out but the Golden Knights could be holding their cards close to the vest in hope of making an Eichel deal work.

THE DENVER POST: Mark Kiszla believes the struggling Colorado Avalanche should beat the Golden Knights to the punch and acquire Eichel.
