Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Oilers/Flames Trade on the Cards?

The latest Edmonton Oilers rumors being passed about the rumor mill have an Oilers insider “pontificating” on deal he’d do that’d feature a rival club swapping a major star with Edmonton and another one is less-a-rumor than it is speculation upon one of Edmonton’s blue chip prospects and whether or not he gets moved by the Holland/Jackson tandem.

But before we get to that, give us a follow on the socials!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

“Now, Broberg continues to play well in the American Hockey League, and I’m told that teams also continue to call [general manager] Ken Holland of the Edmonton Oilers to talk about the potential movement there,” said Dreger on Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading. (c/o oilersnation)

  • Like I said, I’m of the belief that Edmonton’s plan is to keep Broberg and pair him with Ekholm next season.
  • Broberg’s not just “playing well”, he’s flying down in Bakersfield playing huge minutes for the Condors and that’s definitely impressing the right people up the Chain in the Oilers organization.
  • That said, Ken Holland is still the GM and he wouldn’t be doing his job if he wasn’t listening to offers on all of his players.
  • Personally, with this group of skaters playing as well as it is, I’m not sure if the club wants to deal away any of its depth (meaning Kulak, Ceci, Foegele, etc). Instead, I’m thinking they’ll be adding to it, if anything.

“The latest surge, however, is an excellent for Broberg as a prospect, whether that’s here in Edmonton — where he could fill in on the Oilers’ third pair if they explore a cap-clearing trade of Brett Kulak — or as someone who the club could trade, say, in a Jack Campbell deal. The netminder has allowed two goals against in each of his last four games, winning each of the with a save percentage teetering on .940.” – former Beer League Heroes contributor Zach Laing (Oilersnation)

  • Another thing I’ve mentioned in the past, Jack Campbell sticking around until the summer.
  • Even with Broberg playing as well as he is, I don’t think teams are lowering their asking price to take on Campbell’s contract. It’s a massive hit. Too massive in my opinion and too dear a cost for the Oilers to move in-season.

“Bob Stauffer, who is a part of the Oilers’ broadcast team and the host of “Total Sports” as well as “Oilers Now” on Edmonton radio station 630 CHED, suggested a massive trade between the Oilers and the Calgary Flames. In the deal, he suggests the Oilers acquire forward Elias Lindholm from the Flames in exchange for Brett Kulak, Xavier Bourgault and the Oilers’ 2024 first-Round Pick.” – The Hockey Writers

  • This is a hard deal to make and not because it’s one between two rivals, but because you don’t really know if Broberg can replace Kulak right now and you don’t really know if Bourgault is a lost cause yet.
  • However, if you don’t think that any of those players would help you more than Lindholm, you do the deal yesterday.

“While Lindholm would be a welcomed addition to any team that acquires him, it doesn’t make any sense for the Oilers to try and bring him in. He isn’t what they need right now and it isn’t worth the package Stauffer suggested.” – The Hockey Writers

  • I disagree with the writers take here. We know the Oilers are looking for a proper top-six winger for Leon. So that would indicate to me that Elias Lindholm, a proven sniper, is exactly what the team needs.
  • You know what else he is, a right-shot center. Have we heard anything about the Oilers looking for one of those for the past decade or so?
  • If they’ve got Holloway, McLeod, and Foegele humming along on the third line as well as Ryan, Perry, and Janmark/Gagner holding down the fort on the 4th line, all that leaves is Draisaitl’s RW slot to be filled.
  • And on top of all that, Lindholm can play center in the event the coaching staff wants to really dice things up. Edmonton’s 2nd PP unit could use a guy like that, no?
  • The fact of the matter is this, the Flames are heading into a re-tool and who knows what’ll happen to Dillon Dube. They need as many futures as possible.
  • So, yes, there is a world where Calgary would do this deal but for me it’s not enough from Edmonton. Sure the Swede is up for UFA status this summer and could re-sign in Cowtown (I doubt it), if I’m Craig Conroy I’m probably asking for prospects with a bit more heat. Maye Max Wanner, Beau Akey, Rafa Lavoie, or possibly Philip Broberg.

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM43: Oilers VS. Blue Jackets – 3P2W – Take Off Your Pants and (Blue) Jacket

Hey y’all! Welcome back for another season of Edmonton Oilers hockey! I’m BLH and I’ll be giving you the skinny on today’s game!

If you’re new here and are wondering what 3P2W means, well, it stands for Three Players to Watch and seeing I’m as lazy as I am, I figured we’d shorten it to 3P2W.

So with that out of the way, let’s talk a little bit about what’s been going on lately in the Oilogospehere and then get into the player’s I’ve put under the spotlight for today’s matchup!

Random Pontifications

If you were to say, ‘look, the Campbell signing, obviously a mistake, whether it’s now or later, we’re going to have to pay a price to get out of his contract.’ Maybe this is the year you move a 2025 first-round pick plus whatever else you need to get rid of Campbell, and then you’ve got your 2024 pick on the table to add a big defenceman or an elite winger.” – Frank Seravalli

  • I don’t think they’ll move on from him in-season. What’s the point, really? They only have so many tradeable assets and personally, I think they loath the idea of moving Broberg and Holloway right when they’re both on the cusp of being impactful NHL players on the cheap. But not only that, Campbell’s playing much better down in Bakersfield and I’d be willing to bet that he gets recalled at some point.
  • I mean, is the addition of Perry and Holloway to the lineup really what’s opening the door for Edmonton to move him? Wouldn’t it be his play that’s really doing that and at the same time you’ve got to ask yourself, how much of his recent statline in Bakersfield is him and how much is the rest of the team considering The Condors are on one helluva heater.

“Insider Chris Johnston mentioned on his show that the Oilers are looking for an impact forward and threw out the names Jake Guentzel, David Perron, and Jordan Eberle.” – Cam Lewis, Oilersnation

  • I’m going to say no on Guentzel and Perron and maybe on Eberle. Not to say they won’t try but if I’m Pittsburgh, Detroit, or Seattle, I’m not doing Edmonton any favors because after Broberg and Holloway, who would be an acceptable return for any of those players?
  • Edmonton’d have to find a way to make the money work too and historically they’ve been quite averse to that kind of legwork.
  • Also, those three teams aren’t exactly out of the playoff race by any means.
  • Now, all of that said, those three names are exactly the kinds of players Ken Holland would be going after if he thinks his team has a good chance at winning the Cup and he’s never ever been afraid to move out youth for experience.

Three Players to Watch for the Bad Guys

  • #86 Kirill Marchenko (14g 10a 28pts) – This Russian is an absolute snipe show. 21 goals in 59 games as a rookie last year, he’s got 14 at the halfway point this season and he’s almost equaled last year’s point totals (only one point away). All for 925k… He’s going to cost this team a lot to re-sign after this season.
  • #11 Adam Fantilli (11g 14a 25pts) – Not bad production for the rookie. The number that stands out for me is his 107 shots so far. Fantilli only has 2 goals in his last ten games or so and none in his last five and I’d say that’s pretty normal considering the club he plays for and where they sit in the standings, but a guy with talent like he has, he could break out at any moment if given the time and space.
  • #4 Cole Sillinger  (8g 10a 18pts) – Half of Sillinger’s goal output as come in CBJ’s last five games as he’s been promoted to play on the first line alongside Johnny Hockey and Yegor Chinakov. I like him because’s a bit of old school mixed in with the new school. Meaning, he’ll play a gritty game but he’s got some skills to go with it.

Three Players to Watch for the Good Guys

  • #55 Dylan Holloway (1g 1a 2pts) – Hollywood comes back in the Flames game and immediately pays dividends by doubling his point totals on the year. With the addition of Corey Perry to the roster Edmonton is going to need as much speed in their bottom six as possible and Holloway definitely brings that. Would it shock you to see a Gagner/Holloway/Perry line at some point? I mean, honestly, what’s Connor Brown done to keep his spot in the lineup so far?
  • #2 Evan Bouchard (11g 31a 42pts) – Two goals and six assists in his last five. This Columbus team looks about as strong as wet toilet paper defensively allowing 23 goals in their last five games (1-4-0) while the Oilers have allowed eight in their last five… Bouch is getting on the scoresheet.
  • #97 Connor McDavid (16g 43a 59pts) – January is when Connor historically slows down a bit but tonight feels like one of those nights where he might blow up the other team. The Blue Jackets are reeling, they can’t get a save, and the Oilers are flying. Add to the fact that he’s only got one goal on 20 shots in his last five games.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Talk: Insiders link Monahan and Hayes to Oilers, Perry Reportedly Signs!

Here are the latest rumors regarding the Edmonton Oilers!

Random Pontifications

“However, the Oilers sending Ceci and Foegele to the Flames doesn’t come close to getting a trade done for Tanev. For the provincial tax, the Oilers would probably have to send their 2024 first-round pick as well as a young player off their roster. For the latter, former first-round selection Dylan Holloway could make sense.” – Flamesnation

  • Jesus Christ… How brutal is that trade proposal? Three roster players AND a first for a dman who’s barely being held together by a bottle of Elmer’s glue… They’re huffing some pretty crazy shit down in Cowtown.

Trade Rumors

  • “Elliotte Friedman doesn’t believe Jake Allen to the Edmonton Oilers is happening any longer.” – NHL Trade Talk
  • ”No different from any other year, there are teams looking for centremen and depth at that position – or a top-two or top-three centreman.” He adds, “We’re looking at Colorado. We’re looking at Boston, the Edmonton Oilers, maybe even the Washington Capitals if they stay in the mix leading up to the trade deadline.” – Darren Dreger
  • “I don’t know how Kevin Hayes feels about going to play in Edmonton; however, he did do a trade deadline stint in Winnipeg.” – Frank Seravalli
  • “I think the Oilers are an authentic candidate.” – Frank Seravalli on Corey Perry

No big surprises. The Oilers are trying to get bigger in their bottom six and add some supplementary scoring at the same time. However, they would be getting slower by adding any of the players mentioned above.

Dylan Holloway’s inclusion on last night’s roster was a positive one. He added speed, skill, and grit to that 4th line and if he keeps that up it’ll make it very difficult to trade him in order to add a veteran center. That said, it’s still just one game and we probably shouldn’t be anointing him savior of the 4th line just yet.

I still think that Holland/Jackson are going to add one or two bigger older players for the playoffs just because you need them. They’ll still have the kids down in Bako to come up as the black aces as long as they don’t trade them. A Pat Maroon and/or Klim Kostin-type for the 4th line wouldn’t hurt and I say those players because they’re glue guys, there’s no mystery behind them, and the fans love them. On top of that, depth is key.

What does it cost to bring in Maroon and Fleury out of Minny?

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM41: Oilers VS. Kraken – 3P2W – Broberg Staying and Edmonton Eyeing Preds Center

Hey y’all! Welcome back for another season of Edmonton Oilers hockey! I’m BLH and I’ll be giving you the skinny on today’s game!

Random Pontifications

  • Are the Oilers really going to win their 12th game in a row on Mark Messier’s birthday?
  • I’m lead to believe the plan for Philip Broberg is NOT to trade him this year unless the deal is massively in Edmonton’s favor. They want to pair him with Ekholm next season and see what the old Swede can do with the young one.
  • Now, if that isn’t writing on the wall for Cody Ceci and Brett Kulak, I don’t know what is. One or both probably won’t be with the Oilers next season if the plan is to set up Broholm (Bro Hymn?!!!).
  • But what does it mean for Nurse and Bouchard? Will they be reunited next year? What if it doesn’t work? Does Broberg go with Nurse?
  • It’s a weird scenario to think about, right? Is it a good strategy to give Broberg top-4 minutes like that? Wouldn’t you want to ease him in as opposed to firing him into the lion’s den from the get-go?
  • Speaking of scenarios, Edmonton’s got their eyes on Nashville Predators center Colton Sissons still. I’ve been saying this for years it seems. You see, they want somebody who drags his teammates into the fight and has had post-season success to which Sissons has both (to a degree). On top of that, he’s got an easy ticket to absorb.
  • It’s really going to come down to how well Dylan Holloway does before the deadline because he’s got all of the tools required. He’s fast, tough, loves getting his nose dirty, a smart playmaker, and his contract is very ideal for where the Oilers are cap-wise. The problem is, he’s started his career spending a lot of time on the IR and Edmonton’s in win-now mode.
  • I’d hate to see it, but I could. A Holloway for Sissons trade with Nashville retaining and possibly sending a pick back.
  • There are a lot of 3C targets for the Oilers where they could use Holloway. Sean Monahan is on their list, Nic Dowd out in Washington, Kevin Hayes in STL, would Edmonton go after Elias Lindholm? There are probably some in the organization that’d love to bring Nick Bjugstad back. Boone Jenner’s name is quietly floating about.
  • Surprisingly, Claude Giroux might be a wild card trade target.
  • How does the Habs’ Jake Evans float your boat?
  • It’s fun to throw all those names around and think about all the different trades Edmonton could make but at the end of the day, they need their bottom-six shored up something fierce and I think those trades could be easier to sort because I reckon third line centers are going to be a premium at this year’s deadline.
  • Last name… Marc-Andre Fleury. If Minny falls out of it, this is a guy Edmonton should pay well to bring in.

Three Players to Watch for the Bad Guys

  • #19 Jared McCann (17g 11a 28pts) – Boy, has this guy ever turned into a player. How many teams gave up on him before Seattle benefitted? He’s fast, strong, and has quite the shot. Has six points in his last five games (3g/3a).
  • #22 Oliver Bjorkstrand (12g 23a 35pts) – Only two goals in his last ten games but he’s still firing the puck at around three shots per game in that time. At the moment, the Kraken have him lining up alongside Yanni Gourde and Eeli Tolvanen. It’s a weird line dynamic but for whatever reason it find a way to be effective.
  • #7 Jordan Eberle  (6g 15a 21pts) – Ebs is having a season to forget but even with that said he’s still a dangerous winger and we all know what happens when those ex-Oilers return to town. I do wonder however if he’s a target for the Oilers at the deadline. I mean how much could the acquisition cost be for a winger who’s struggling to score and is in his mid-30s? You could flip that the other way around and ask why the Oilers would want that player but I think he’d get a bump from playing back in Edmonton with good centers and why wouldn’t the Oilers want that scoring depth? It’d be a very Holland-esque transaction.

Three Players to Watch for the Good Guys

  • #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (11g 27a 38pts) – He’s very quietly playing at a near point-per-game pace this year as a complimentary winger for Leon and Connor. He’s due for a goal though as he’s fired 21 shots in his last five games with nothing to show.
  • #29 Leon Draisaitl (21g 25a 46pts) – I’m tellin’ ya, January is Leon’s month. He’s potted three in the last five games for Edmonton, seven in their last ten. His biggest challenge though is finding a way to get his wingers to score. Evander Kane and Warren Foegele are struggling to put it politely but at least with Kane it’s health related. Lucky for Leon, Edmonton is going to bring in a top-six winger for him to round out the year with.
  • #14 Mattias Ekholm (4g 14a 18pts) – Man, it didn’t take long for Bob Stauffer to forget about Darnell Nurse, eh? Ekholm is the new defense whisperer. What is it with the Oilers and Swedish defensemen? They’ve had some real good ones come through over the years. This one has three assists in his last half dozen minus one to go along with ten shots and six blocks.

2023/24 Edmonton Oilers GM40: Oilers VS. Maple Leafs – 3P2W – “Keep your eye on a team like Edmonton. I think that they..will certainly have some interest.”

Hey y’all! Welcome back for another season of Edmonton Oilers hockey! I’m BLH and I’ll be giving you the skinny on today’s game!

“There’s anywhere between 4 or 5 teams… that have interest in Corey Perry… I know there’s been some talk about Toronto – I don’t see that as a fit…Keep your eye on a team like Edmonton. I think that they..will certainly have some interest.” – Chris Johnston

  • Perry’s on his way to the Oilers. It’s only a matter of time and man, do they need him in their bottom six because those boys have fizzled right the f*ck out. I would assume that’s why the games have been a lot closer as of recent.

“The Oilers are actively exploring the possibility of adding veteran forward Corey Perry to their roster, according to insider reports. Bob Stauffer, host of Oilers Now, has revealed that the team is diligently assessing the potential acquisition of Perry.”

“TSN’s Frank Seravalli notes that the Oilers have been in pursuit of Perry for several weeks and are expressing genuine interest in securing his services. Perry, who is reportedly considering various options, is said to have Edmonton high on his list of preferred destinations.”

  • I don’t always believe what Seravalli says but I do think he’s an entertaining guest on Stauffer’s show because he sticks it to Bob every now and then and doesn’t give stock answers.
  • Now, what I’m afraid of is the Oilers considering Perry to be their “top-six” winger addition that Holland was speaking to recently. That won’t work. The former Duck is way to old to be getting that kind of TOI and he’s been way better down the lineup.
  • One thing that could materialize out of a possible Perry addition is that Warren Foegele gets moved. He’s got ten points in his last ten games and seems to be a good winger for Leon but I could foresee a scenario where Draisaitl gets pissy due to the lack of finish out of McLovin’.
  • Perry could replace Foegele in the bottom six easily and #37 could be used in a deal to bring in somebody like Vladdy Tarasenko out of Ottawa. We know the Sens and Oilers have been talking and the Staios connection is there…
  • Just as an aside, do you think there’s a chance Edmonton moves Evander Kane? I’ve not heard anything and he’s been a lot better than some projected him to be (on and off the ice) when Holland brought him in, but I just wonder if the Oilers cut bait on him before he gets into Milan Lucic territory.

Three Players to Watch for the Bad Guys

  • #34 Auston Matthews (33g 15a 48pts) – There is something to be said with regards to scoring goals at nearly a goal-per-game pace but if you’re one of those hockey people who are saying Matthews should be in contention for the Hart, you’re kidding yourself. He’s not even the MVP of his own team this year. The next guy on the list is…
  • #88 William Nylander (21g 36a 58pts) – I think he’s the best player on the Leafs but there’s an argument to be made there. He’s definitely the most entertaining and that’s not even close. He’s scored five goals and seven assists in his last ten games played.
  • #16 Mitch Marner  (18g 28a 46pts) – Surprisingly enough, Marner is the team’s hottest player in their last five games with four goals and three assists in that time. Now, I don’t watch the team enough but at the moment, Sheldon Keefe has him lining up on his 3rd line RW for some reason alongside Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi. That line could be problematic if they’re on their game.

Three Players to Watch for the Good Guys

  • #18 Zach Hyman (14g 10a 24pts) – Is this stat true? According to hockey-reference, Hyman has only played against the Maple Leafs three times. He’s got one goal and one assist in those games. Anyways, he’s still trucking along in the goal-scoring department with five goals in his last five games.
  • #97 Connor McDavid 0g 3a 3pts) – 16 points in his last ten games and historically versus the Leafs he has 31pts in 21 games. Now Careful with him though, January seems to be one of the months where Connor slows down a bit.
  • #74 Stu Skinner (9g 30a 39pts) – He’s 4-0-0 with a 1.24 GAA and a SV% of 0.957 in his last five starts. They’ll need him on his game tonight because Toronto has enough firepower to blow it wide open if Skinner shits the bed in the tiniest of fashions. That said, so much for his sophomore slump I was pitching earlier in the season. He’s now made it so that the co-GMs Holland and Jackson don’t need to stump up for a starting goalie. All they need now is a 1B.
