Player grades: Mikko Koskinen stands tall as Edmonton Oilers hold off Vegas 3-2
  • #6 Kris Russell, 8. Blood-and-guts defender gets a 1-point bonus for breaking the NHL’s “all-time” (counted since 2005) record for blocked shots… On a road trip where the Oilers were missing three left-shot defenders, Russell stepped up with games of 23, 23 and 22 minutes and was a plus player in each of them.
  • #13 Jesse Puljujarvi, 8. Surely one of the reasons he was assigned to the third line was to stop the heavy bleeding that line was suffering at the defensive end. So far so good: 2 GP, 0 GA.
  • #18 Zach Hyman, 8 All over the puck all night long. Scored a superb goal on a partial breakaway… Fired 6 shots on the night and controlled play time and again deep in enemy territory.
  • #19 Mikko Koskinen, 9. Was nothing short of fantastic in the first period when he made a handful of spectacular stops to thwart what appeared to be certain goals.
  • #86 Philip Broberg, 4. Led the Oilers in ice time with 23:34… By our count he was burned on a ghastly 7 Grade A chances by the home team…
  • #84 William Lagesson, 5. Looked much more comfortable than in Wednesday’s season debut in Arizona.
  • #56 Kailer Yamamoto, 5. A couple of dangerous shots, but some struggles at the other end where he made 4 mistakes on Vegas chances…
  • #16 Tyler Benson, 5. Slowly but surely Benson seems to be finding a toehold as an NHL player, though the offence hasn’t come yet.

BLH’s Thoughts: The complementary offense came through!!! Hyman, Pulju, Nuge!!!

I think Mikko Koskinen single-handedly pulling the Oilers off the mat after taking about five or six Mike Tyson uppercuts got into Vegas’ head. Combine that with the team being without some major pieces and having to put the majority of their defensive efforts into stopping McDavid and Draisaitl, and that left an opportunity for guys on the schneid to clear up their bill and hop off.

So, Broberg got a taste of what a real challenge looks like and to nobody’s surprise, he had some troubles. Theodore nutmegged him like it was 1982 again and had an excellent chance on net as a result. I think Pacioretty was having himself a good evening against the rookie too, but that’s how she goes when you’re 20 years old playing top-pairing minutes against the league’s best forwards. Not every night is going to go to play. Peaks and Valleys, baby. Peaks and Valleys.

I would like to say that Benson and Sceviour are doing exactly what this team needs them to do on the fourth line. They’re getting their hands dirty, making things difficult for the other team’s defensemen, and overall, being a pain in the ass. I kinda wish they had a center with some more size who exhibited the same sort of playing style and effort… I do not mind Derek Ryan, but at this point in his career I’m wondering about his durability and form.

The Athletic

The Oilers’ prospect pipeline has produced 2 call-ups on defence already this season. Who’s next?
  • Markus NiemelainenIf Edmonton needs a third-pairing shutdown option over the rest of the season, Niemelainen is at the top of the Bakersfield list.
  • Dmitri Samorukov: Samorukov is perhaps ideal for Edmonton because he has all of the things Niemelainen possesses and a mean streak that would help on nights when the physical game is on high heat.
  • Filip Berglund: He is 24, and the time is now for him to make the Oilers if he is to have an NHL career… Berglund is behind Niemelainen and Samorukov in the pecking order, but a recall during the season is possible.
  • Phil Kemp’s game (defence first) looks like the easiest to transition to the NHL, but he has played just 21 AHL games…
  • Mike Kesselring, who has a higher ceiling than Kemp but is less certain to reach it.
  • Vincent Desharnais is on an AHL contract so he’s unlikely to be recalled.
  • Edmonton is well stocked with defencemen, and several are knocking at the door. It’s a good problem to have, and the Oilers have time to pick the best future available to them. Expect several auditions like the one we’re seeing in Edmonton with Broberg.

BLH’s Thoughts: Who’s to say who the next defenseman to get promoted will be. I didn’t think Lagesson would get a recall this time, but there he was in Vegas last night taking care of business.

Honestly, if the Oilers are calling guys up after this current stint, won’t that mean they’ve hit the skids injury-wise again or somebody is really struggling?

I want to see Niemelainen and Samorukov in Edmonton quite badly. If anything, just to see how they handle NHL competition with their style of play. Both are RFAs at season’s end but Russell will be a UFA and Lagesson’s contract will most likely be allowed to run out. Maybe there’s a much higher chance one of them will be on the Oilers roster for the year in 2022/23.

That said, don’t discount Niemelainen or Samorukov getting the call in the playoffs should shit go south health-wise.

The Hockey Writers Rumors

  • One agent said that (Filip) Forsberg might look at the contracts Matt Duchene and Ryan Johansson were given and ask for something similar. It’s not believed the Predators think he’s worth that. There’s also a feeling they won’t give him a full no-move clause and that he’ll want more than a four-year deal which is the ideal length for Nashville.
  • In a troubling report that surfaced between the time of the penalties and the fine by the NHL DoPS is that reports surfaced Marchand made an inappropriate remark to Panarin that got him heated. Arthur Staple of The Athletic writes:

“Marchand made some Russian-centric comments toward Panarin — along the lines of “no one likes you there” while bringing up Russian President Vladimir Putin, of whom Panarin has been critical in the past. Panarin clearly had enough. Those don’t seem like fine-worthy comments, but they might not sit well with the league.”

  • According to Elliotte Friedman, it is expected that the Ottawa Senators will put goaltender Matt Murray on waivers after he was scratched versus the Anaheim Ducks on Friday… the Buffalo Sabres and Arizona Coyotes are both rumored to be looking for goaltending help. It might be more likely both teams let him pass through waivers and then reach out to Ottawa about a potential trade where salary retention is involved.

Oilers Have Trade Targets in a Penguins Fire Sale
  • Jeff Carter is a player who could be popular at the trade deadline and I agree. The Oilers might be one of the teams who poke around if the winger/center is made available. He’s got an affordable contract at $2.6 million and Carter is a pending UFA, which is critical for the Oilers who will not be making major changes to their forward corps over the next few seasons.
  • Brian Dumoulin is an interesting option because he’s a steadier, more reliable lefty who offers playoff experience. He could easily come in and shore up the Oilers’ depth issues — assuming the injuries continue to stay a problem. However, Dumoulin has term on his contract which isn’t ideal for the Oilers.
  • (Tristan) Jarry has one season after this remaining on his current deal at $3.5 million, which is actually perfect for the Oilers. It’s not a terribly expensive contract, Edmonton can see what Jarry looks like for a season while further evaluating Stuart Skinner and Mike Smith’s final year will be expiring at the same time with Mikko Koskinen out of the picture.

BLH’s Thoughts: Normally I’d say that these names sound perfect, but the Pens are on a helluva run right now and they’re not in the basement of the Metro any longer. Pittsburgh has won five on the trot and are now tied with Columbus for 4th in that division.

I don’t see the Pens moving any of their core pieces, do you?

Things we’ve learned at the NHL’s one-quarter mark
  • Connor McDavid is fantastic and generational, but Leon Draisaitl is the MVP
    • Leon Draisaitl, with 40 points in 19 games, is four up on McDavid in the scoring race and in fact he’s the only non-Wayne Gretzky Oiler to reach 40 points before the 20-game mark. In league-wide historical context, Draisaitl is off to the best start in 25 years.
    • Take out the man advantage, and Draisaitl has 18 points at 5-on-5 to McDavid’s 14 and, impressively, a league-leading nine primary assists to McDavid’s three.

BLH’s Thoughts: This is fun to watch and all, but if these two are doing all of the scoring, it points to a much larger problem that seems to escape every GM that tries to solve it.

Serious Uncertainty Surrounds Oilers Left-Side Defense… Trade Coming?
  • Ben Chiarot might be an option out of Montreal but the Canadiens aren’t officially selling yet. Brayden McNabb would be a nice fit out of Vegas, but Jack Eichel isn’t ready to return and the Golden Knights aren’t in a situation where they need to clear salary-cap space yet.
  • The Oilers may have no choice but to wait this out and hope the rest of the roster can pick it up, with less-than-ideal options doing what is needed to keep this team afloat for a few weeks.

BLH’s Thoughts: Unless the Oilers lose Broberg or Russell, they’ll ride this little injury crisis out or use internal options like Dmitri Samorukov or Markus Niemelainen in the short-term.

Chasing goals
  • …what is a reasonable expectation for Draisaitl? He has 20 goals so far in the first 19 games of the season – 9 goals at even-strength (5v5, 4v4, 3v3), 10 on the powerplay and one shorthanded.
  • …if he continues to convert 26.5% of his shots into goals like he has so far this season, he’ll score 30 more goals at even-strength over the last 63 games.
  • Let’s say he cools off and regresses closer to his career levels – then we can expect him to score 17 more times at even-strength.
  • If Draisaitl continues to get the same on-ice share of the team’s shots, he’ll get another 100 shots over the rest of the season. And if he somehow maintains a 33.3% shooting percentage, then he would score 33 more powerplay goals – crushing a few records along the way.
  • …if his shooting percentage comes back down to the still-excellent levels he’s posted over the last three seasons, converting on 22.7% of his shots, he should score another 18 powerplay goals.
  • I think realistically, Draisaitl could target scoring 65 goals, which is what Ovechkin posted in the 2007/08 regular season.

BLH’s Thoughts: How are you enjoying the internal competition in Edmonton between Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl? Wouldn’t it be nice if some other players joined in and started depositing some goals for the team like the guys down the QE2 are doing?

Trading For An Impact Forward
  • The Arizona Coyotes have zero aspiration of winning games this season and impending free agent Phil Kessel will surely get moved ahead of the trade deadline. Kessel hasn’t been great in the desert but he has a pedigree of playoff success from when he won two Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • They don’t have a good rental option for the Oilers to look at but a different name stands out to me as a reclamation project. Dylan Strome, Connor McDavid’s former teammate in the OHL, has just three points in 12 games this season.
  • A couple of veteran rental options who make sense are Ryan Getzlaf and Joe Pavelski, though it’s hard to say if either will be available.

BLH’s Thoughts: I’d love for the Oilers to grab a Kessel but he looks like he enjoys the sunny weather too much to waive his modified NTC and I can almost guarantee you that the Oilers aren’t on his list of teams he’s green lit to go to.

Strome would be an excellent reclamation project but not this year, where’s he going to play? The top-nine is full and are you putting a skilled guy like that on the 4th line to play five minutes a night?

If Anaheim wasn’t in such a good position right now, Getzlaf would be the perfect addition with his experience and leadership qualities. With Pavelski, he’d be another really good pickup for the same reasons as Getzlaf, but I wonder if he’s in the same boat as Kessel.

I’d say Edmonton shores up the 4th line, grabs an extra defender, sorts out the goaltending, and then calls it a day before heading into the post-season. Maybe they grab Luke Glendening and Braden Holtby if Dallas is out of it, Marc Staal and Ben Chiarot are on their radar, that’s no secret, and Carson Soucy, Mason Appleton, and Nathan Bastian seem to be the names coming out of Seattle according to the host and guests on Oilers Now.

The Hockey Writers Rumors

  • According to Elliotte Friedman, Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin isn’t going to trade Fiala just because he’s in the middle of a difficult run right now. The Wild are still leading their division despite a lack of production from Fiala, but trading him would make the team worse if they don’t get the right return.
  • Mark Lazerus of The Athletic offered updates on a number of running storylines out of Chicago. Noting the team is still near the bottom of the Central Division standings, there are three players that will make over $9.5 million next year on the roster and if they choose to rebuild, the Blackhawks may move some of those pieces to restock their cupboards with better and guaranteed draft picks.
  • Sean McIndoe of The Athletic was asked when the Canadiens might start to tank their season and said that GMs tend to do so early if they know they’ll be out of it at the end of the year. That said, the Marc Bergevin factor in Montreal makes it less likely the Habs do so.

“Bergevin might not want to take the hit to his reputation that would come with a last-place season right before hitting the open market.”

  • TSN’s Darren Dreger confirmed an earlier report by Friedman that Claude Julien will be the head coach of the Spengler Cup team with Bruce Boudreau as his assistant coach. If the NHL is forced to pull out of the Olympics, this same coaching staff will coach in the Olympics games.

DEPARTMENT OF YOUTH 2010-2021
  • Philip Broberg has the look of Petry and Klefbom, a player who can singlehandedly carry a rookie season to a passing grade. After that, there are some interesting players.
  • I remain on the Lavoie train and an pleased the young man is with the Condors current staff. Whatever improvements need to be made, there’s a confidence rational people have identified the course forward from here. That’s a big damned deal with young people.
  • Kesselring and Kemp get placed together but are in no way similar, I’d say Kemp has the better chance to play in the NHL with Kesselring having the higher ceiling.
  • If I had to protect one in an expansion draft, it would be Kesselring. Rodrigue doesn’t seem to be making an impact but goalies can surprise you (see Skinner, Stuart).
  • If I’m betting on players having 100+ NHL games, Broberg is obviously a checkmark but we simply don’t know beyond the big Swedish defender.

BLH’s Thoughts: Head to LT’s site by clicking the link above to see where the rest of the Oilers prospects have landed starting way back in 2010.

Personally, I think Kesselring is going to be a long-term project. I mean, really long-term because Bouchard and Ceci are going to take up two spots on Edmonton’s right side for the next four years at least. The contracts of Kesselring and Tyson Barrie expire at the same time, but Phil Kemp, who I think has a better chance at making the NHL, his deal ends a year earlier meaning the club will need to make a decision on him that could impact Kesselring’s future.

Edmonton Sun

Edmonton Oilers Kris Russell approaching black-and-blue milestone
  • …in a year where the Oilers’ stars seem to be breaking a new record almost every night, there is a special place in their hearts for Russell as he closes in on the league’s all-time record for blocks.
  • Russell is at 1,997, just one behind the recently retired Brent Seabrook on the league’s all-time list and should break the record Saturday in Vegas when the Oilers visit the surging Golden Knights.
  • Since their 9-1 start, the Oilers are 5-4-0 in their last nine games, so this is a stern and important test for an Edmonton team that, despite playing reasonably well lately, is still losing ground to third-place Vegas and first-place Calgary, who are 7-3-0 and 6-2-2 in their last 10 games.

BLH’s Thoughts: Remember the vitriol in Oilersnation when Chiarelli signed Russell to that four-year deal and then again for an additional season under Holland? Good times…

I’d be interested to know if Rusty wears any added protection underneat his equipment in order to survive this long.

Bloody guy deserves a spot in the Hall for blocking that many shots in a career and living to talk about it.

That hot start at home has paid off as the Oilers have cooled considerably since having to hit the road.

I was thinking the other day about which team is better set this year between Calgary and Edmonton and I think the Flames are much better positioned to go on a long playoff run than Edmonton. They’re getting a complete roster effort night in and night out plus Jacob Markstrom has come back to life. Isn’t Calgary’s goal differential a plus 30 or something? That’s without two MVPs on their roster to boot. Nobody is talking about the cracks in their lineup and that Kylington guy is pretty good eh? I wonder where I’ve heard in the past a certain blogger say that the Flames would be making a big mistake if they let him go.

Spector’s Hockey

  • CANUCKS ARMY: cited Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman indicating tension is really high among the Vancouver Canucks organization. “Everybody’s looking around at everybody else and saying, ‘okay, we’re waiting for something to happen.’ Is it going to be an executive? Is it going to be a coach or is it going to be a player? Who’s it going to be,” he said.
  • THE PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma reports the Minnesota Wild have contacted the Canucks expressing interest in J.T. Miller. He speculates the Wild would likely dangle winger Kevin Fiala… He suggested big winger Jordan Greenway but felt he’d be better suited to a fourth-line role rather than skating alongside Elias Pettersson.
  • VANCOUVER HOCKEY NOW: Rob Simpson reports NHL executives will tell you Brock Boeser has been “out there” since the offseason but the trade talk has heated up in recent days.

The Oilers Prospect Report
  • Matvey Petrov was the highest-scoring Oilers prospect with three goals and six points for the North Bay Battalion.
  • Max Wanner found the back of the net for his first WHL goal against the Prince Albert Raiders last night.
  • Savoie scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season against Miami (Ohio) University for his fifth goal in his last four games. The next night, he grabbed an assist to take his points tally to 19 and is one away from his total last year.
  • On Saturday night, Broberg got his first NHL point with a secondary assist on Connor McDavid’s opening goal against the Chicago Blackhawks.

BLH’s Thoughts: Aapeli Rasanen continues to light up the SM-Liiga, Tyler Tullio is making the OHL his b*tch right now and Xavier Bourgault is running the QMJHL’s show to boot… Still.

It’s an interesting place for the Oilers prospect cupboard having so many offensive studs at the same time and the fanbase not crying bloody murder to have them playing in Edmonton.

The Athletic

How the Oilers’ most pressing roster priorities have changed since the offseason
  • Before the season began, most observers suggested general manager Ken Holland would add an additional goaltender to replace Koskinen at the deadline and give coach Dave Tippett a stronger option to tandem with Smith.
  • It was also suggested at least one dozen defencemen would make appearances in a wild series of trades and recalls in search of a third-pair lefty.
  • Finally, a No. 3 centre remained a need unless Derek Ryan or young Ryan McLeod could fill the gap.
  • It’s still very early, but Stuart Skinner (tandem goalie), Philip Broberg (third-pair defence) and McLeod (No. 3 centre) have shown well enough through the first games of 2021-22 to at least be considered as candidates for long-term solutions.
  • Using two-way play, contract and some offence as priorities, and depending on how the season rolls out, players like Joonas Donskoi and Mason Appleton (both of the Seattle Kraken) might come available and give the third line a boost.
  • A third line with Foegele, McLeod and a two-way right winger like Donskoi would allow the Oilers to move Kassian to the fourth line, likely with Derek Ryan.
  • Edmonton’s secret weapon for the fourth line could be Dylan Holloway. He is still recovering from surgery but should be ready to play games for the Bakersfield Condors in either late December or early January.
  • The Pacific Division (Kraken) and the Central Division (Arizona Coyotes) are teams that look like ideal trade partners at this point, with more teams to enter the pool as the season continues.

BLH’s Thoughts: If Colton Sceviour continues to play well, the Oilers should keep him at 4C and let Ryan recover from whatever’s been ailing him. Give the former Flame some spot duty from time to time, but give the guy who’s earned the job the actual job.

I don’t have any problems putting Kass on the 4th line, but I’d be willing to bet you won’t get what you think out of him there. I’ve found that he’s more engaged when he’s in the top-six and when he feels trusted by the coaching staff. So if Edmonton is going to slide him right down to the bottom rung, they’d might as well deal him for some salary cap relief and a bottom-sixer who relishes being a bottom-six grinder and defensive specialist.

The Daily Goal Horn

  • On Elliotte Friedman’s latest 32 Thoughts Podcast, he and co-host Jeff Marek said that things in Vancouver were fairly chaotic.
    • “I personally don’t think I’m going to get traded,” Boeser said via the Athletic. “I feel like I’m part of the core here and a big piece. That’s just how I feel.”
  • According to Jeremy Rutherford, who covers the Blues for the Athletic, he indicates Tarasenko’s trade demand still stands. The other big issue is his trade value, which seems to have improved but not enough for the Blues to move him.
    • “The Blues have seemed inclined to keep Tarasenko since his trade request likely because his value to the club exceeds what he could bring back. But has his production this season increased interest? A few sources around the league feel that it has, but perhaps it’s still not enough for Blues general manager Doug Armstrong to consider moving Tarasenko before the trade deadline on March 21 — or even next summer.” – Jeremy Rutherford, The Athletic
