Around the Oilogosphere: Cult of Hockey – Oilers Coaches Have Consistently Failed to Get Out Top Performers on Power Play

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

The Edmonton Oilers finally came alive on the power play against Tampa Bay, creating seven Grade A chances in one third period power play.

Not surprisingly, perhaps Edmonton’s five most skilled attackers, Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Strome, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Oscar Klefbom were all on the ice, for that two minute power play. Their passing, vision, puck-winning and puck control was superlative to a man.

What is surprising — and perhaps a bit appalling if you’re an Oilers fan — is…

Around the Oilogosphere: The Hockey Writers – Trading Milan Lucic Would Be a Mistake

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

Oilers’ forward Milan Lucic has been taking a public lashing in recent weeks. Perhaps deservedly so. A $6 million cap hit on the roster for another five seasons after this one, there are expectations that come with being paid such a hefty salary. 10 goals and 32 points in 70 games just doesn’t cut it.

All that said, this would be a terrible time to try and trade the veteran forward.

Is Lucic Even Tradeable?

You may be asking, “is Lucic even tradeable?” That’s a fair question considering how poor his production has been this year. Yet, if you look back to the beginning of the season, Lucic was better-than-decent five-on-five and only in the latter part of this year did his production fall off a cliff.

Read more on how a Milan Lucic trade would work, what teams could be involved, and why it’s a bad idea here: https://thehockeywriters.com/oilers-trading-lucic-mistake/

Just a note for the Update: As the seasons wind down on the seasons for the Oilers prospects I will be adding in when they are eliminated so you will know when their updates will stop.

The Bakersfield Condors continue their long-shot push to get to the playoffs. They have been lighting up the scoreboard all over the place, including a franchise record for goal scoring with eight goals.

We have a smart cookie alert to extend. Tyler Vesel was named the NCHC senior scholar athlete. Meaning he has now collected the scholar athlete award three times in his career. He was also a finalist for the defensive forward of the year award.

Maksimov had a great week this week on and off the ice. He signed his ELC and put up eight to head into the OHL playoffs on a tear,

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

With the season ending tomorrow, the OHL Playoffs are all but set so it’s time to take a look at the matchups starting with……

1st Round Matchup

#4 Niagara (34-23-7) vs. #5 Oshawa (35-29-3)

Quick Notes:

Niagara Ice Dogs come into their final game today on a 6 game winning streak. They split the season series 1-1 with Oshawa this year. Last time they met in the playoffs was 2014 when Oshawa led by Cole Cassels won the series 4-1.

2017-18 Rankings:

PP: Niagara 19.2% (12th), Oshawa 18.8% (13th)

PK: Niagara 80.2% (8th), Oshawa 74.7% (19th)

Goals for: Niagara 234 (6th), Oshawa 246 (3rd)

Goals against: Niagara 232 (4th), Oshawa 241 (6th)

Niagara Ice Dogs

Offensivelythe Ice Dogs Top 6 is very good. Unlike last year where they got swept in the 1st round, this year’s team boasts two legit scoring lines. Edmonton Oilers draft pick Kirill Maksimov (33 goals) spearheads the Top line at RW with C Ben Jones (LV 7th rd) & Captain LW Johnny Corneil (undrafted overager) rounding out the unit. This trio isn’t the flashiest but they are very…
