Philip Broberg
  • Broberg is viewed by many Oilers fans as “not Trevor Zegras” and while I understand why discerning fans would have been disappointed, there was (and is) enough we don’t know for us to reasonably see how this plays out.
  • I don’t believe Zegras’ success automatically makes the Broberg pick a poor one. It is not the choice I would have made, but once a team commits to a player by drafting him, it’s important to give that player time to show you what he can bring. I wrote “offense may be shy, but Swedish blue can fool you” and had Oscar Klefbom in mind when writing it.
  • Perhaps we should give him some time before making a decision on him as a player. Fair?

BLH’s Thoughts: In that draft, I was a very big proponent of Matthew Boldy, an intelligent big-bodied winger with a penchant for scoring goals, and he was drafted by Minnesota at 12th overall. I would’ve taken him over Zegras and Broberg for sure because I felt that the Oilers didn’t have a player like him in their system. Funny thing is, Edmonton picked Dylan Holloway two years ago and I feel like they’re similarly built whereas I have it on good authority that the Oilers really liked defenseman Kaiden Guhle… So in a different universe, maybe things would’ve worked out like my scenario after all…

Personally, I don’t see how Zegras’ early success impacts the Broberg pick in any way, shape, or form. He’s a highly skilled forward that was always going to produce more and find himself on the highlight reels. Broberg was never slated to be that guy despite his Paul Coffey impressions from the 2018 Hlinka-Gretzky.

What you’re going to get is what we saw with Philip when he captained Team Sweden at the 2021 World Juniors. At that tournament, he was so solid defensively and played the role of captain very well. He had a buggered up shoulder and a quadricep tear he was playing through until the coaching staff had to force him to stay off the ice. He’s a warrior, like Klefbom, and once he’s hit his stride, he’ll be an important part of Edmonton’s playoff success.

Oilersnation

Four Encouraging Signs and Areas of Concern for the Oilers thus far
  • The Power Play
    • It’s currently operating at a PP% of 40.8%. The all-time record for PP% is 31.8% by the Montreal Canadiens in 1977-78. In terms of Power Play Goals For/60, Edmonton is currently at 17.3, and no team since 2007 has scored at a rate higher than 12 GF/60.
  • Continued dominance from Edmonton’s Dynamic Duo
    • Although McDavid has had a superb start and seemingly scores a highlight-reel goal every 2nd game, Draisaitl has definitely been Edmonton’s best player thus far in my opinion. I think there’s a legitimate possibility Draisaitl scores 50 goals, or perhaps even more.
  • Strong play from McDavid and Draisaitl’s surrounding top-six forwards
    • Nugent-Hopkins has had a peculiar year; he merely has one goal, yet ranks 2nd in the league with assists and has a total of 19 points in 16 games.
    • Jesse Puljuarvi has taken major offensive strides. He’s put up 6 goals and 14 points in 16 games, a pace of roughly 31 goals and 72 points over a full season.
    • To add on, there’s no doubt that Zach Hyman has been Edmonton’s best addition this season.
  • Stuart Skinner
    • In the absence of Mike Smith, Stuart Skinner has been nothing short of phenomenal, as he boasts a 0.943 SV%, and has saved 4.68 goals above expected.

BLH’s Thoughts: I love how Skinner is playing right now. He’s looking like an NHL starter and that’s exactly what this team needs with Mike Smith on the IR. He really isn’t giving a lot to the other team’s to work with as the Blackhawks just found out. That’s two games the trot with two or fewer goals against… That’s a nice trend.

The PP is going to be godly as long as Draisaitl and McDavid are on it, so there’s no point in really touching on that.

Edmonton’s top-six wingers compliment their centers perfectly at the moment and when’s the last time you could say that, back in the Doug Weight days?

What’s very interesting is that Dave Tippett has started to use Leon and Nuge on the PK as a pair and Yamo with Derek Ryan or Colton Sceviour. Now, what makes that interesting is now the Oilers have scoring threats on the penalty kill as well as at even strength and the power play… I mean, I can’t remember the last time Edmonton scored two shorties in the same game like they did last night, can you?

AREAS OF CONCERN:

  • Even Strength
    • League-wide, Edmonton ranks 17th in even-strength goal share, and 23rd in expected goal share and high danger chance share.
  • The Bottom Six
    • Last season, not a single team had a worse even-strength goal share without their top three most productive forwards than Edmonton right now (Chicago came close with a GF% of 27.6%).
    • If the struggles of the bottom six persist, perhaps moving RNH down to the third line may be the best option.
  • Darnell Nurse injury
    • Although he excelled offensively, I was fairly critical of Nurse’s defensive play last year (only 2% of all players in the league allowed scoring chances against at a higher rate). However, Nurse has been above average defensively this year, as Edmonton allows fewer chances with him on-ice.
    • Edmonton will miss him, and I’m very concerned with how Keith will play in his absence.
  • Overall Defensive Play
    • here’s where the Oilers rank defensively this season league-wide;
      • 19th in Goals Against/60
      • 22nd in Expected Goals Against/60
      • 29th (!) in High Danger Chances Against/60

BLH’s Thoughts: When the bottom-six gets their game together, the defensive and even strength numbers will come together as it did last night because it’s really those six players’ where the team is leaking chances and goals against.

Spector’s Hockey

  • THE ATHLETIC: In a recent mailbag segment, Josh Yohe was asked if the Pittsburgh Penguins could become sellers at the 2022 trade deadline if they don’t make the playoffs.
    • Asked if Jake GuentzelBryan Rust and Brian Dumoulin could become deadline trade chips if the Penguins were out of contention, Yohe replied he could envision them being available for the right price, especially Rust as he’s eligible to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
  • PITTSBURGH HOCKEY NOW: Dan Kingerski believes the Penguins need a course correction to snap out of their early-season struggles. He feels they need a right-side defenseman, a scoring winger for Jeff Carter and a spark plug player similar to former Penguins forwards like Patric Hornqvist or Brandon Tanev.
  • THE ATHLETIC: In a recent mailbag segment, Michael Russo was asked about the future of winger Jordan Greenway. He could be moved before next season to make room for promising wingers like Matthew Boldy and Adam Beckman.
  • OTTAWA SUN: Earlier this week, Ken Warren speculated over whether the Senators will pursue a trade for a center to replace the sidelined Colin White and Shane Pinto.

Player grades: Penalty killers shine as Edmonton Oilers roll to 5-2 win over Blackhawks
  • #37 Warren Foegele, 8. One of the more noticeably Oilers on a highly effective third line. In his 11 minutes at even strength Edmonton outshot Chicago 9-3 and dominated the scoring chance metrics as well.
  • #74 Stuart Skinner, 8. Set the tone in the opening seconds when he robbed Kane from close range, then made a second outstanding stop of the same Chicago star from the slot just 4 minutes later… 30 shots, 28 saves, .933 save percentage.
  • #86 Philip Broberg, 7. Comported himself well throughout his 14:24 of action. Drew an early penalty that led to a powerplay goal. Then earned his first NHL point by making a quick, smart pass down the wall to Foegele, setting the stage for McLeod’s goal.
  • #97 Connor McDavid, 8.  Another splendid game from the captain, who chipped in a goal and an assist early to provide his team a multi-goal lead that they never did relinquish… 2 shots, 1 hit, 3 giveaways, 2 takeaways, and 8/14=57% in the faceoff circle. The biggest surprise? He drew not 1, not 2, but 3 (THREE!!) penalties.
  • #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 5. Quiet game at even strength. Struggled to contain Blackhawk shots from the point…
  • #16 Tyler Benson, 5. With a team-low 5:14 of ice time didn’t play enough to really move the needle, but he had his moments all the same… Drew three opponents including the goalie into a scrum after banging away at a loose puck in the blue paint and continuing to bang away even after it wasn’t loose. Has recognized the necessity to play with some edge in his current NHL role and is doing just that.
  • #13 Jesse Puljujarvi, 5. A little snakebitten this last while, and was again on Saturday when he was flat out robbed by Kevin Lankinen after a great McDavid feed on a 3-on-1 rush.
  • #2 Duncan Keith, 7. He led all players on both sides with 25:06 in ice time, within a few ticks of his career average during his 16 years in the Windy City but about 5 minutes more than he’s been getting in his new home.

BLH’s Thoughts: Edmonton’s PK was as dangerous as I’ve ever seen and Kailer Yamamoto played a big part in that. I don’t know if Chicago thought they’d have their way with Sceviour and Yamo because they’re little guys, but whatever it was, it supercharged that PK unit.

Speaking of penalty kill units, Edmonton is playing Nuge/Leon, Foegele/McLeod, and Sceviour/Yamamoto. If the Oilers decided to take things slowly with Derek Ryan, I wouldn’t complain. Those PK pairs are mouth-watering…

If Pulju wasn’t skating well or getting any chances, I’d say we might have a problem with him, but he’s all over the place contributing on both sides of the puck. It’s just not hitting the back of the net for him, but it will… He’s too good to go on a Yamamoto-like skid…

How about that defense without Nurse? Not too shabby folks… Then again, we probably shouldn’t get too excited considering the Oilers just beat the Chicago Blackhawks…

Broberg had a solid evening. He only got caught once by the diminutive Alex DeBrincat and then nearly got railroaded by fellow Swede, Erik Gustafsson (since when does that guy make open ice hits?).

Did Caleb Jones kick Zack Kassian’s dog? Kass was all over him in this one.

In the first meeting between Duncan Keith and Jones, it’s not even close, I’m giving the decision to Keith. Oilers win the trade. #KenHollandVictoryLap

Now, if Edmonton’s third line can dominate like that 80% of the time, we’ve got ourselves a Stanley Cup contender. Ryan McLeod was looking like Anthony Cirelli out there and Foegele and Kassian were the Bash Brothers…

The Daily Goal Horn

  • “The Athletic confirmed that the Rangers are potentially looking to add a forward, though a veteran defenseman is believed to be on their shopping list, as well.” – Arthur Staple, The Athletic
    • Two prime targets I am aware of are F Reilly Smith in Vegas and D Mark Giordano in Seattle.
  • “After some poking around via texts and calls to various and trusted NHL sources, there was no indication that the Boston Bruins and the Rangers are engaged in any substantial NHL trade talks. However, there was more than one source who said Bruins winger Jake DeBrusk is still a mainstay on the NHL trade rumor circuit amongst NHL scouts and execs.” – Jimmy Murphy, Boston Hockey Now
    • Murphy also indicates that the Bruins are looking for a top 4 defenseman in return.

Oilers Notes
  • McDavid, who had only drawn six minors in the first 16 games, drew three penalties, two by Hawks’ captain Jonathan Toews.
  • Oilers defenceman Slater Koekkoek, who is out three to four weeks, is wearing a boot on his foot, maybe a sprain.
  • Oilers centre Derek Ryan missed his second straight game (head) after being hit by Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele this week. He’ll go on the road trip to Dallas, Arizona and Vegas, which starts with back-to-backs Tuesday and Wednesday…
  • Oilers saluted Jujhar Khaira with a welcome-back video in the first period and he got a nice hand from the crowd…

The Athletic

Philip Broberg is ready for his NHL audition
  • The eye test in preseason showed Broberg taking too long to make decisions with the puck, and because of it he was taking too many hits (five in three games) to survive.
  • At the time of his recall to Edmonton, Broberg has played in 13 AHL games, posting 10 assists and an even-strength goal differential of 6-5.
  • Broberg can skate the puck out of danger or pass it to safety. He has an effective “spin-o-rama” move that allows him to sidestep an oncoming rusher, turn and head the other way in one motion. It’s impressive and, more importantly, effective in getting out of jams and avoiding hits.
  • Broberg is being used in all situations and is having success at even strength and on the power play.
  • His performance with the man advantage includes impressive passing from the point, finding lanes for his shot and gaining the offensive zone with his speed.
  • Broberg is also confident in challenging defencemen deep into the offensive zone if the opportunity presents itself.
  • …the big part of his offensive game took place in a complementary role in Bakersfield.
  • The speed is exceptional.
  • Broberg skates like a forward and can separate in a couple of steps. He’s a rangy player with good size (6-foot-3, 204 pounds) and is still adding man strength. He can close a gap quickly and has a nice touch on his passes.
  • He has a good shot, uses it often (27 shots in 13 games) and drives to the net with authority and no fear. I’d stop short of calling him rugged, but he’s not shy when things get rough in scrums or along the wall.

BLH’s Thoughts: Broberg can play, there’s no doubt about that and I think tonight he’ll have a good-to-great game but most of that will be because of nerves. However, Chicago’s forwards are more skill-based and seeing as Broberg came up in the Swedish system, there’s a chance he’s more accustomed to defending that kind of forward.

The real test will be against Dallas and Arizona as they’ve got some more aggressive forwards and they’ll be testing Broberg’s composure with the puck on his stick and in his own zone.

Three times lucky for Edmonton Oilers?
  • If that anyone would have told me two months ago that Cody Ceci would prove to be an adequate replacement for Adam Larsson and that Mikko Koskinen and Stuart Skinner would step up big time in the event Mike Smith was injured, I would have been doubtful.
  • Ceci is playing sound two-way hockey in a Top 4 role. He’s not the banger, hacker and hitter that nasty Larsson was on defence, but Larsson wasn’t the heads up passer that Ceci is.
  • As for Koskinen and Skinner, they’ve had many more good starts than bad ones, and have, on a slight majority of nights, outplayed the goalie in the opposition net.
Will the Edmonton Oilers be three times lucky?
  • Tyson Barrie having a consistent run of play where he’s both moving the puck well and also making sound decisions on defence, not pushing things too much, not trying to force plays in the o-zone and n-zone. Barrie’s defensive play in the last five games has been more settled, but he’s going to have to find a way to stay settled without big Nurse at his side.
  • Duncan Keith was Chicago’s #1 d-man last year. For two weeks or so, he’s going to have to act as Edmonton’s No. 1 left side d-man.
  • Kris Russell. He’s not a good partner for Barrie, as they’re both smaller players and tend to get pushed around a bit. But teamed up with Evan Bouchard? That might work.
  • Evan Bouchard. He started out looking great, both on the attack and defence, but his defensive game has fallen apart too often in recent weeks.
  • Philip Broberg. He’s raw. He can skate as well as any Oilers d-man, and that includes Darnell Nurse.
  • William Lagesson. Last year he stepped in and aced it for a handful of games partnering with Adam Larsson. Then Lagesson got hurt and stopped playing well.
  • It’s asking a lot to expect this group to keep it together in Nurse’s absence. But they have a chance…

BLH’s Thoughts: If you take a team’s no.1 defenseman away from them, that hurts. In a morbid kind of way, I am quite curious to see how the Oilers play without Nurse and where the shortcomings appear.

Wild Bill is back and he’s getting a second chance. If you read Lowetide’s blog you would probably be under the impression that Lagesson’s NHL prospects are sinking like a rock, but I wonder if this fresh opportunity will re-energize his efforts like it did with Ryan McLeod? The Oilers will need a physical element on its blueline with Nurse out and I know for a fact that William Lagesson can be a mean mother f*cker if need be. He can also make a play and skate with the puck too though.. That said, do you think he gets TOI over Kris Russell?

I have a feeling that Tyson Barrie will step up while Nurse is out. Nothing to back that up, just a hunch.

FWIW, if you’re part of the “trade Nurse” camp, to which I was for a long time but am no longer, there may be a section of the Oilers media and fanbase who see you as a racist with no proof.

Spector’s Hockey

  • TVA SPORTS: Anthony Martineau and Nicolas Cloutier weighed in on which Montreal Canadiens players they’d attempt to trade if they were the general manager.
    • Martineau suggested shopping Brendan Gallagher. He felt the 29-year-old winger’s $6.25 million cap hit through 2026-27 could become burdensome for the Canadiens over the long term.
    • Cloutier, meanwhile, suggested packaging defenseman Ben Chiarot with versatile forward Joel Armia for a first-round pick and a prospect.
  • TSN: Darren Dreger reports the New York Rangers have been in the market for a middle-six forward for some time. It can be a third-liner or someone who can skate on the top-six. That search became amplified by Sammy Blais recently suffering a season-ending injury.

BLH’s Thoughts: If the rumors are true about Chiarot, and I believe them to be, I could definitely see a Chiarot/Armia to Edmonton deal being something Ken Holland would be into.

As for the first rounder going the other way, I would imagine the Oilers would prefer to go another route there unless extensions are in order, but in that case, given Chiarot’s a left-shot dman, what will that say for those under him on the depth chart and Armia just re-upped with Montreal on a 4yr deal (no trade protection though).

If you were Oilers GM would you move Zack Kassian, Dmitri Samorukov, and a 2023 2nd round pick for Chiarot and Armia?

Trading For A Veteran Defender
  • On Friday’s episode of The Jeff Marek Show, Elliotte Friedman talked about how he figured that Ken Holland will be willing to go all-in ahead of this year’s trade deadline. He specifically mentioned the left side of the blueline as a place that Holland would likely be looking to add…

“I look at their roster and I can see them adding someone like Ben Chiarot on the blueline. The other question for them is in goal. Mike Smith is competitive, he’s a better player at this stage of his career than any of us thought he would be, but the issue is can he stay healthy. Only Ken Holland and the Oilers know the answer to that.” – Friedman

  • Chiarot is one of three Montreal defenders, Brett Kulak and Chris Wideman being the others, who are set to become unrestricted free agents at the end of the season.
  • Through 19 games this season, Chiarot is second to only Jeff Petry on the Habs in ice-time, logging 23:02 per game. He logged 21:47 per game for the team last year during the regular season and was leaned on heavily in the playoffs, logging 25:15 per game, the most of any Habs defender.
  • If the Kraken wind up being sellers, there’s one soon-to-be free agent name really stands out as a potential addition to boost Edmonton’s blueline — Mark Giordano.

BLH’s Thoughts: Friedman and Stauffer talked about this on Oilers Now yesterday and to be honest, not a whole lot of new information was released. Stauffer said that he heard Montreal wants a first rounder for him and Friedman doubled-down on his stance from his spot on The Jeff Marek Show the day prior by saying he’s certain the Habs will get that for him.

There’s no doubt that Holland is going to upgrade the team and that the Oilers’ futures are all on the table. We’re about to get a glimpse of what throwing a 20yr rookie into a big-minutes role with this squad looks like and if that plan falters, our Stanley Cup-winning GM may be forced to make a trade earlier than he expected.

I don’t have any problems with Ben Chiarot. He was a monster for Montreal in the playoffs last year but he was also paired with Shea Weber and I’d be willing to bet that played a huge factor in his performance. Could he reproduce that effort alongside Cody Ceci in a shutdown role?

Acquiring Mark Giordano would be such a McDavid-era Oilers thing to do, but trading for big name vets at the deadline also falls under Ken Holland’s modus operandi. I don’t have a problem with it though because he’s such a warrior and in the playoffs those kinds of players can catch fire and can be a real inspiration to teammates. Ron Francis knows this though and he’s just biding his time before he gets a king’s ransom for the former Flames captain.

OILERS NOTES: Keith set for reunion with Blackhawks
  • It only took 17 games for Duncan Keith’s NHL career to come full circle… After 16 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, the not-so-long awaited reunion is Saturday night… Maybe not as weird and nostalgic as it will be when the Oilers visit Chicago on March 3, but it will still be an emotional night.
  • Keith hasn’t been here long, but he’s already made a big impact on the Oilers. He’s a popular guy who fits seamlessly into the culture here and he’s given them most of what they’ve asked for in a second pairing role.
  • Head coach Dave Tippett played Keith 26:49 in the overtime win over Winnipeg and sees him getting better as he becomes more comfortable in his surroundings. He also plans on having him take up some of the hard minutes left behind by an injured Darnell Nurse.

BLH’s Thoughts: Keith spent the last three or so seasons playing on a poor Chicago Blackhawk’s team’s top pairing. So getting shifted up a slot in Edmonton won’t be an unfamiliar feeling for him and I think to some extent, that’s part of the reason Holland acquired him, as insurance in case Nurse got hurt.

The question now is, on a better hockey team, will Keith be able to handle the responsibility?

I’m figuring that Keith should do okay against his former team, seeing as he practiced day in and day out against Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews for nearly his entire career before this season; he should have some inside tips on how to handle them most effectively.

Another reunion is set for tonight as well as Caleb Jones and Jujhar Khaira are set to return to Edmonton for the first time since becoming Chicago Blackhawks this summer.

  • Josh Yohe of The Athletic: (mailbag) It’s too early to say if the Pittsburgh Penguins will be out of the playoff race and be sellers at the deadline. It’s also too early to say how big a rebuild could happen.
  • Iain MacIntyre of Sportsnet: Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning spoke to the media yesterday about their awful start to the season… Benning met with ownership on Tuesday and has their support for now. Benning wouldn’t promise security for head coach Travis Green.
    • As for looking to make a trade, the Canucks are dealing from a position of weakness and teams are circling. For now, they may ride it out but they are talking to teams.
  • Chris Johnston of the Toronto Star: (mailbag) The Edmonton Oilers are trying to win this year and expect them to look for some veteran players in the last year of their contracts. Injuries will play a part in what they look to add but can see adding a goaltender and a defenseman.
  • Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet: A KHL free agent forward to keep an eye on is Andrei Kuzmenko. There is a lot of interest in the 26-year old.

Not good. Not good at all. Darnell Nurse out a few weeks, TSN reports
  • This in from TSN’s Ryan Rishaug on Darnell Nurse’s injury: “Sounds like a broken finger for Nurse, and potentially 2-3 weeks recovery time. Huge loss for the Oilers but opportunity for Broberg to be tested.”
  • This is not good. This is not close to good. Nurse has been playing like an all-star, like a Team Canada d-man, and there’s no one close to his level of play on the left side who can step up and replace him.
  • Might we see Lagesson team up with Cody Ceci on a shut-down pairing, with Keith and Barrie on the top-pairing and Bouchard and Russell or Broberg on the third?
  • Broberg did not stand out at rookie camp or main camp this season… Broberg seemingly took 2-3 big hits on puck retrieval in each exhibition game and it became evident that, while he was indeed a high-ceiling prospect, AHL development time was needed.
  • While Broberg is a big man, the one things Nurse has that Broberg does not, is the mean streak and physicality.

BLH’s Thoughts: Did anybody have Darnell Nurse hitting the IR early this season on their Bingo card? I sure as hell didn’t. When I saw the news this morning it hit like cinder block to the gonads. There was only one position on the team that would be in dire straits if hit by injury and that was Nurse’s…

So here we are again, a blue chip prospect in Edmonton is getting called up and thrown to the lions…

The Oilers are going to face the Blackhawks tonight and I haven’t watched Phil play in Bakersfield this year, so I’m not sure if he’s learned not to put himself in such vulnerable positions on the ice like he was doing in preseason.

That said, Chicago doesn’t really have any headhunters on their team, so it’s less of a concern, but in two days Edmonton is going to play Dallas and they’ve got some physical players like Jamie Benn, Radek Faksa, and Roope Hintz. Our young Swede will need to be on his toes then.

Philip Broberg Will Have to Play Big Minutes
  • Philip Broberg will make his NHL debut tomorrow night against the Chicago Blackhawks after being recalled from Bakersfield earlier this morning.
  • The eighth overall pick in the 2019 draft is going to play close to 20 minutes most likely in his NHL debut, because of injuries to Darnell Nurse and Slater Koekkoek.
  • If Nurse was healthy, Broberg would likely play sheltered third-pair minutes, but with the Oilers top D-man out of the lineup for a few weeksBroberg will likely play close to 20 minutes.

AHL SCOUTING REPORT

  • He is physically fit. He is big. He has got fantastic legs on the breakout (good at transporting the puck).
  • We have asked him to help run our power play. He has been excellent.
  • In terms of coachability, natural ability and being a factor on the backend, he is off to a very good start in the American league.
  • His points have come from making good reads at the offensive blue line and on the power play… He is getting his points from playing the right way.
  • He is someone who wants to make good plays with the puck when you are in a tight situation.

BLH’s Thoughts: Woodcroft is very deliberate with his choice of words and I hear him saying that Broberg is doing very well at the AHL, but I feel like there’s a bit of uncertainty with the call-up because there’s a lot of praise for the offensive aspects of his game without mention of how he’s doing defensively.

Personally, I might’ve went with Niemelainen and Samorukov, because they can both skate and pass the puck, but offer a physical element. However, I get why Broberg is being summoned and I’m excited to see how he does. Chicago’s skilled forwards will be a good test for him.
