If He’s That Bad, Sit Him

Boy did Ryan Rishaug rip the underperforming Oilers a new one yesterday on the Jason Gregor Show. Here are a few quotes:

  • “Connor McDavid’s defensive work was as shoddy as I’ve ever seen it”
  • “A bit portion of their roster got on their horse and put together a really nice stretch and Talbot didn’t… I’m not going to sit here and rip on him for too long but let’s say it for what it is, he had a bad game.”
  • “Generating, having his (Lucic) feet moving, playing physical, there wasn’t enough of that”
  • “We’ve talked about this with Eberle for years. When he’s not scoring, what’s he doing? And the answer is nothing. And that’s a problem.”

This post is going to be about Eberle but I just want to comment quickly on Rishaug’s comments. He wasn’t just ragging on all of the Oilers in his segment on Gregor’s show. I’m paraphrasing here but he did say something to the effect that we heap a lot of praise on player X and it’s only fair that when the perform poorly, we criticize them as well.

I don’t disagree with this and the thing with McDavid, Lucic, and Talbot is that they’ve rarely gone two games in a row where they play so bad that the media singles them out. Eberle on the other hand…

Watch the goals in that clip above. Most of them come in the slot or around the blue paint. Where has the Jordan Eberle gone that we see in the video above?

The 2016/17 season has not been kind to Ebs and I’m not about to write off this post-season because he’s yet to get going. I think there’s still an opportunity for him to make his mark, positively that is, but I have to wonder if things are getting magnified 10-fold because the Oilers have played two of their main Pacific division rivals now for 9 games. Two teams that he had a combined 4 pts against, all assists.

What happens if the Oilers make it to the Western Conference Finals or the Cup Finals? The Oilers would be out of the Pacific and the style of hockey, in theory, would change and possibly to Eberle’s advantage… Just a thought.

In season’s past, we could forgive Eberle and look passed his defensive and physical shortcomings because he was getting scoring chances and he was putting the biscuit in the basket on a regular basis but since Todd McLellan has taken over, he’s the 2nd $6M man that has seen his performance on the ice peter out. Taylor Hall is a New Jersey Devil now, who knows where Jordan Eberle might be playing come opening night in 2017/18.

But back to the now.

This is a Todd McLellan quote I ripped from David Staples latest post, oddly enough an Eberle one as well, that I thought to be revealing indeed.

““Not enough,” McLellan said, then added “This is a new experience for him for him and he’s learning as he goes as well. It’s great to be making strong plays on the boards and checking well, but you also have to find a way to contribute on the power play and  he’s not the only one, but he’s the one that stands out right now.”

If Jordan Eberle is playing that poorly, and we’re already at game 9 mind you, why hasn’t he been demoted to the press box? If the message isn’t getting through, maybe a night watching would serve him well. Or do you demote him to a line with Mark Letestu? OR do you get him on a line with McDavid and/or Draisaitl?

I mean at this point in time, is there something that Drake Caggiula can’t do that Eberle can? What about Anton Slepyshev? Benoit Pouliot?

It’s almost impossible to try and project Eberle on another line, right?

  • 1st line: He’s not replacing Draisaitl.
  • 3rd line: Are you moving Kassian or Caggiula up? Does #14 fit on this line?
  • 4th line: This line is playing quite well at the moment. Does Slepy go up?

“Rather than playing Eberle on the 4th line where he’s not tailor made to do any of that. They would be better off scratching him and not playing him at all. If they wanted to send a message to Jordan Eberle, don’t muck up your 4th line by putting a player that can’t play that way on it. Scratch him.

Now, I don’t think they should do that but that might make as much sense as dropping him down in the lineup.” – Ryan Rishaug

If you’ve read my posts this season you probably know that I’ve gone to many lengths to defend Jordan Eberle because I reckon he’s still one of the better options for a top-6 right-wing spot but I’ll be honest, my faith is dwindling. I love that Jordan is getting his nose dirty and playing that role up a bit but my word, he has to do better with the puck on his stick or he has to channel his inner Kassian and start plowing players on the other team.

What do you think? What would you do with Eberle at this point? Let us know in the comments below!

Oilers/Ducks G3 Review Plus: I Know Who’s Getting Moved This Summer

Chills… So proud of the folks back in the YEG.

First things first, apparently Oilers prospect William Lagesson is on his way to the SHL in Sweden. At least according to the tweet below. It’s only rumored right now and nobody from the Oilers has announced it, so I suppose we’ll play the waiting game on this one but would it surprise you at all with all of the depth on the left side in the organization already?

Klefbom-Sekera-Nurse-Oesterle-Reinhart-Jones etc. I’m sure I’m missing someone but just off of the top of my head, Lagesson is behind all of them.

The draft lottery was something eh? Taylor Hall, man that guy has ZERO luck with the NHL teams he plays on aside from their sweet lottery wins.

The question I have is, will the Devils go the old Oilers route and take the skilled winger OR will they take the stud center who’s been compared to Sean Monohan and Mark Scheifele but has major injury concerns.

My advice, trade down Ray! Trade down!!

Philly and Dallas must’ve had horseshoes up their butts. Wow! Did they ever luck out! Philly, in theory, should get that dynamic winger in Hischier they’ve been looking for for quite some time and Dallas’ options are WIDE open. Maybe they go for the sharp-shooting Owen Tippett?

Burning the Midnight Oil

The start to last night’s game was horrendous, to say the least, but with that said, the comeback was glorious! I think I could hear the roar of the crowd all of the way over here in Taipei after Connor scored that beauty.

Another player who was on his game was Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Wow, he was firing on all cylinders from the get-go and I wondered aloud if Todd McLellan might be tempted to get him out there a bit more often. I haven’t checked the TOI in the 3rd but I know McDavid and his dash three didn’t play all that much once the game was out of hand. So maybe RNH did, in fact, get more ice-time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcJXIkO6i9E

The Wagner goal was unfortunate though and Darnell Nurse is struggling. I think Nurse really wants to make a difference but he’s not quite there yet and he’s hurting the team a bit.

Is it time to take him out for a game? Just a break to watch the game from the box and get his head squared away. Could Eric Gryba fill in for a game?

Can somebody answer me this? Why do I keep seeing Benning and Nurse out at the same time as Connor is on the ice? You’d think you’d want your best pairing w/97 out there. Maybe that is Nurse/Benning though… Either way, it’s seems off and I expect to see Klefbom and Larsson. Just thinking out lout here.

Here’s the thing though the Oilers kept the pedal to the medal and had their chances to score after that 4th goal by the Ducks but John Gibson stood on his head and Anaheim got a few more bounces their way.

The Oilers are still up 2-1 in the series. Let’s keep that in mind.

To address the title of my post, I’d like to start with a tweet from Mark Spector.

https://twitter.com/SportsnetSpec/status/858884974774112256

I’m right with ya there Spec! And I really think that Edmonton will do their damnedest to move Eberle and his $6M deal out of Edmonton and it’ll be another deal you don’t like on the surface but the difference between this year and the Hall trade from last year is that you trust Chiarelli’s judgment now.

I did hear that the Oilers were looking at the Sabres before the season ended and before Tim Murray and Dan Bylsma were axed. Maybe there’s a fit in Buffalo for Ebs but in my opinion, their offense isn’t the no.1 problem.

Can’t really say as to what the Oilers would want back for the button-hook assassin. Where do you think the Oilers need to address?

Oilers/Ducks G3: A Roster Shuffle? Who’s Coming In?

He’s Fine.

That was the answer given to Sportsnet scribe Mark Spector when he queried Oilers head coach Todd McLellan on the status of Drake Caggiula. You knew McLellan wasn’t going to say anything more than that too but you have to ask the question.

http://www.gfycat.com/AnxiousCostlyHorsemouse

Helluva smack Draggiula took after a goal-mouth drive on Ducks goalie John Gibson in game two right in the earlier parts of the 2nd period. The fact that he immediately went to the dressing room didn’t do anything to dispell the injury speculation. Caggiula did try to come out in the 3rd but nothing was going. So, here we are.

So, here we are.

Should he even be in the lineup right now? I think it’s a question worth tossing out there.

Caggiula had 6 goals and 11 assists in 60 games during the regular season and in the playoffs, he’s amassed a grand total of ZERO points, 11 shots on goal and 10 PIMs whilst sharing the ice mostly with Zack Kassian and Mark Letestu. So I suppose we shouldn’t expect too much stats-wise from him but you’d like to see some progress in the statistical columns, no? And I’m not just talking about the time spent in the box.

The thing I do like about Caggiula is he reminds me of a more assertive Jordan Eberle but faster and less likely to button hook but more likely to take the biscuit to the basket. He’s crafty and he doesn’t mind taking a shot. I think that’s why Chiarelli and McLellan like him as well. #Gritensity

But one has to wonder, how good would Tyler Pitlick look on that 3rd line? Especially after the start to the season he had. I hope that Pitlick recovers and comes back stronger than ever. He’s a very entertaining player to watch when he’s playing his game.

So IF Caggiula is unable to go tonight, who do you think get’s a shot?

  • Iiro Pakarinen – Has already played some post-season this year. Seems to have the trust of the coach
  • Matt Hendricks – Cagey vet w/ an ability to take a faceoff. An area the Oilers are getting crushed in.
  • Jujhar Khaira – Great size and good along the boards. Not afraid of the rough stuff either but lacks the experience and consistency I reckon. Which is shocking when you look at the Drake’s stats.
  • Joey Laleggia – Small and crafty. Scored 20 goals in the AHL this year. Why not?

If I had to choose, I reckon it would be Pakarinen. I think that T-Mac is set with his centres and doesn’t want to tinker about with them nor do I believe he wants to risk putting Hendricks in due to his lack of speed or Khaira because he probably digs how the 4th line is going and JJ might not be 3rd line ready.

Personally, I’d toss Hendricks in. I love his heart and dedication.

Let us know in the comments below who you’d put in!

Oilers/Ducks: The Big Question Going into Game 2

Who really won the Adam Larsson trade?

Ha! I’m just kidding but I’ll touch on the hysteria that was caused when Adam Larsson scored two goals for the Oilers in game 1.

The real question is, How badly is Connor McDavid hurt?

The reason I bring this up is because the panel at Hockey Night in Canada was talking about it briefly during the 2nd intermission if I recall correctly, and then even more briefly during April 27’s Oilers Now! segment w/ Elliotte Friedman.

If you want to skip right to the McDavid conversation, jump to 5:58. I’ll quote some of it below too if you can’t be bothered.

Stauffer – “They brought up the question of McDavid’s health just based on Anaheim’s ability to shut him down. So if you could just clarify, and I know you didn’t specifically state it, but what did get said?”

Friedman – “It was Nick Kypreos and Ron MacLean who were really talking about it, but I didn’t disagree. They showed some video last night of McDavid and he didn’t have, and even Craig Simpson said it during the broadcast, and Simmer I think is really perceptive. He didn’t have “the burst”. We didn’t see him unload the speed and some of that you’ll look at and say, “okay, it’s Anaheim that’s preventing him from doing that.” But the one that really stood out for me is, there was a breakout, I think it was the 2nd period, but they were looking at him… (There’s a part there that I can understand, the audio isn’t great and there’s pucks being shot in the background, I don’t think it’s important to the context of the quote though.) He just didn’t have the burst.

You know, what’s the best breakout the Oilers have? You pass it to Connor and he goes and it just didn’t happen a lot last night.

He took that big hit from Manson, he took that big crosscheck from Sorensen in the last series, and there were a couple of shots of him pulling his equipment or his rib area. And sometimes, you know Bob, in our business it becomes a bit of the Zapruder film, like what are we looking at here? But it was just weird. It wasn’t the Connor McDavid we know.

So we were all wondering if there was something bothering him and I’m sure we’ll find out if it’s true at some point.

So that’s 5:58 – 7:42, and right after Friedman stops talking there, Stauffer breaks into talking about the JFK assassination and therefore ends the conversation of McDavid being hurt. I thought it was an odd way to go about it anyhow.

I didn’t think much of this as I watched the game but after I heard this from Friedman and Stauffer, I thought back and something did come to the forefront of my mind, and what I remembered thinking is why wasn’t McDavid bringing up the puck during the powerplay?

It was Leon Draisaitl that was lugging the puck into the Ducks zone time after time, right? I guess I just thought it was part of the game plan because of Kesler’s shadowing of McDavid but now when I think back, what Friedman said is right. Why wasn’t McDavid holding down the Turbo button?

I can believe this. Klefbom looked like a ghost on the bench during the game where he sat for the 3rd and Draisaitl has been hacking up a hairball during pre and post game interviews for some time now. Pat Maroon is looking a shell of his regular season self and Eberle has gone back into a shell.

Therefore, I believe that McDavid IS dealing with some sort of injury that is holding him back from hitting warp speed. I hope that it’s a short-term thing though and it mustn’t be that bad because Connor was at the optional skate yesterday morning.

But as Elliotte Friedman said, we’ll find out soon enough.

Mark Spector Hates Women and Taylor Hall! What the F*ck Are You Talking About?!!

You’ve read the piece that Spector penned after game one I’m sure and if you haven’t yet, you’ve been exposed to the reactions on Twitter.

I like Spector, he tells us how it is and he doesn’t give a shit if you like it or not. He doesn’t care if you followed the Oilers in the 80’s or if you’re a new fan nor does he care if you are male or female, a cat or a dog, but this article got some panties (or boxers or granny undies or whatever your preference ladies) in a bunch.

Here’s one specific Tweet that lit the hockey world on fire:

https://twitter.com/imfleming16/status/857583513964609536

That part about hockey MEN really pissed off a lot of people and I can see why it would but good lord people! Can we stop playing the victim card here?

“Oh my god, he didn’t say people. He’s a sexist!”

Have I got that right? Or do you actually believe that he’s trolling the entire female portion of the hockey-loving population?

Then I read this article from Megan Fowler entitled, “The Never Ending Breakup”. I’m not sure why I did that. Not that blogs devoted to Taylor Hall are a bad thing but I think Fowler takes it to a near stalker-like level.

“Taylor Hall is the boyfriend you can’t get over because even though you made excuses for why you broke up with him, you know deep down that he’s the best you’ve ever had and the guy you replaced him with is good, but not great. There’s lots of fond memories, and maybe a little regret about the breakup because you know in your soul you made a mistake and no amount of justifying things will make it better. The fact of the matter is that you broke up with him; he wanted to be with you forever and instead of letting him come to grips with no longer being part of your life, you keep reminding him of how much better you are without him. In doing so, however, you draw attention to your lingering affection for him. It hurt your feelings when he said he wasn’t going to pay attention to you anymore, because all you want is for him to look your way. He might actually miss you but he’s never going to admit it, especially not when you constantly drag his name through the mud and compare him to other, lesser, partners you’ve had.”

Grab the new Kassian tribute t-shirt now! Click the image above!

It’s a bit much isn’t it? The part where an actual scribe like David Staples, Mark Spector, or Kurt Leavins can’t write an article about the Adam Larsson for Taylor Hall trade and them being in favor of it because it means Fowler will write a rebuttal because she feels they’re taking pot shots at her boy is ridiculous.

Anyways, I’ve gone off on a tangent here. Fowler’s favorite player is Taylor Hall, good for her. But how many articles entitled, “Farewell, My Prince” or “An Open Letter to Taylor Hall”, does the Oilogosphere have to endure?

Coming soon, The Taylor Hall Fan Fiction Collection…

She “covers” the Edmonton Oilers folks…

And of some folks weren’t mad about the “Hockey Men” part, Maybe this little ditty did it for them:

Somebody wondered aloud, forgive me as I can’t remember where I read it, if Hall had crossed Spector somehow and this is his way of getting back at him. Sounds like a long shot but I could believe it.

The problem I find from the Spector article are thus:

  • Show me where he’s wrong?

Hall’s Oilers couldn’t make the playoffs and Larsson’s have. The Oilers traded a skilled winger for one who is hard AF and actually does embody everything that the old Oilers lacked. Nearly every team has this sort of player on their defense and I don’t mean almost every team in the NHL, I’m talking nearly every team in pro hockey. Are all of those people that run those teams wrong? If you think so, check your ego at the door, son.

  • “Edmonton got what they needed, and the price was well worth it.”

Can you say with a straight face after the season Larsson and Hall have had that the Oilers did NOT need a player like Adam Larsson and that the price was right? Can you tell me the last time a top-pairing defenseman was dealt for a 53pt LWer?

  • “The stats geeks still hate the Hall trade. The reason? Because their craft isn’t far enough along at this point to quantify the qualities in Larsson’s game that makes Edmonton better.”

Are the analytics types mad because he used “stats geeks” or because the old dinosaur is calling them out or because he’s right and the likes of Henderson, Mirtle, and Berkshire haven’t found a way to tell us what it is that Larsson has done to make the Oilers a better TEAM with statistics?

Well he must be right to some extent because he’s getting a lot of mockery handed his way and in my short time on this plain of existence I’ve learned that if you’re getting made fun of for something you believe, it must be putting some fear into those who are mocking you or why else would they even engage you? Put downs and bullying are one sure way of telling someone you don’t understand or are afraid to.

The bottom line is not whether or not the Oilers would’ve made the playoffs with Hall, it’s that for whatever reason, everything fell into place after he left and I think that pisses off a lot of hockey influencers because they can’t figure out why. The numbers tell them that this team with Hall would be substantially better and only minimally worse without Larsson. I feel bad for you if you’re stuck in the black hole that contemplates what the Oilers would be with Hall right now. He’s a wonderful hockey player (truly) but ineffective on a Chiarelli/McLellan led hockey team but hockey can be a mysterious beast sometimes and there are instances where some things can’t be explained logically.

How Do the Oilers Shut Down the Anaheim Ducks Offense?

Let’s start with the player above. Adam Larsson.

How long has it been since the Oilers had a top-end (I really want to say elite) shutdown defenseman? Since Chris Pronger? Jason Smith? Jeff Beukeboom? I am SO happy with Larsson’s performance not only to th eye but also on the stat sheet.

Let’s take a look at how five of the Anaheim Ducks’ top offensive threats have done against each of the Oilers top 6 defensemen in 2016/17.

Let’s preface this by saying that what happens in the regular season doesn’t necessarily mean the same will happen in the playoffs. As everybody knows, anything can happen in a short-term tournament like the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Goalies get hot, grinders start scoring, basically; anything goes. But I want to present to you some metrics that stand out for me.

Nothing special, just something to chew on while you’re waiting for game 1 to start.

I’d like to stick to using Goals for Per 60 (GF60) and Goals Against per 60 (GA60). I’m getting the numbers from stats.hockeyanalysis.com and they are the 5v5 numbers. The reason I want to use the goal scoring metrics are because a team can have all the possession stats they want but unless those translate into goals, they’re meaningless in my opinion, right LA Kings? Besides, goals win/lose the games, no?

Ryan Getzlaf (3g 2A 5Pts in playoffs) vs:

Adam Larsson (36:40 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 3 shots
GF60 – o.00
GA60 – 3.27

Oscar Klefbom (29:50 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 4.02

Andrej Sekera (30:24 TOI) – 0G 2A 2PTS 1 shots
GF60 – 3.95
GA60 – 0.00

Kris Russell (25:54 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 0.00

Darnell Nurse (14:32 TOI) – 0G 3A 3PTS 0 shots
GF60 – 12.39
GA60 – 0.00

Matthew Benning (15:18 TOI) – 0G 1A 1PTS 0 shots
GF60 – 3.92
GA60 – 0.00

Is it safe to assume that the Ducks might try to avoid having Getzlaf on the ice vs. Larsson/Klefbom?

Rickard Rakell (2G 3A 5pts in playoffs) vs:

Adam Larsson (37:04 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 1.62

Oscar Klefbom (31:23 TOI) – 0G 1A 1PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 1.91
GA60 – 1.91

Andrej Sekera (29:42 TOI) – 1G 0A 1PTS 4 shots
GF60 – 2.02
GA60 – 4.04

Kris Russell (24:00 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 2.50

Matthew Benning (16:29 TOI) – 1G 0A 1PTS 1 shots
GF60 – 3.64
GA60 – 3.64

Apparently, Rakell and Darnell Nurse did not face each other but here we see that Larsson and Klelfbom lead the way in shutting down Rakell’s offense. Interesting enough was Russell and Sekera though. Rakell’s goals against shoots way up when Seksi is on the ice.

Jakob Silfverberg (2g 1a 3pts in playoffs) vs:

Adam Larsson (18:16 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 6 shots
GF60 – 3.28
GA60 – 3.38

Oscar Klefbom (15:57 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 5 shots
GF60 – 3.76
GA60 – 3.76

Andrej Sekera (23:46 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 4 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 2.52

Kris Russell (24:00 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 4 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 3.31

Matthew Benning (11:38 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 0.00

Darnell Nurse ( 11:25 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 1 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 0.00

Right here we see that Jakob Silfverberg spent the majority of his time lining up against Sekera and Russell with no luck. Althought, he did see an uptick in the GF60 metric when facing Larsson/Klefbom. Must be a Swedish thing. lol. Nurse and Benning shut the whole game down when they were on the ice with the Silfver Surfer. No goals for, none against.

Patrick Eaves (1g 2a 3pts in playoffs) vs:

Adam Larsson (25:30 TOI) – 0G 1A 1PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 2.35
GA60 – 2.35

Oscar Klefbom (23:48 TOI) – 0G 1A 1PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 2.52
GA60 – 2.52

Andrej Sekera (19:26 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 9.26

Kris Russell (16:15 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 3.69

No Nurse, Benning, or Gryba for Patrick Eaves 5v5 this season I guess. I suppose it makes sense, he’s been on the top line in both Dallas and Anaheim. Seems the Oilers 2nd pairing did quite well vs. Eaves and his magic beard. Well, I’ll tell you something the fine people who study the fancy stats won’t, the Oilers are 4-2 this post season against teams who employ players with ridiculously long beards.

Corey Perry (1g 2a 3pts in playoffs) vs:

Adam Larsson (28:02 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 4.28

Oscar Klefbom (22:46 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 0 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 5.27

Andrej Sekera (23:09 TOI) – 0G 2A 2PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 5.18
GA60 – 0.00

Kris Russell (20:46 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 4 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 0.00

Matthew Benning (15:42 TOI) – 0G 1A 1PTS 5 shots
GF60 – 3.82
GA60 – 0.00

Darnell Nurse (20:50 TOI) – 0G 1A 1PTS 3 shots
GF60 – 2.88
GA60 – 0.00

Eric Gryba (16:23 TOI) – 0G 0A 0PTS 2 shots
GF60 – 0.00
GA60 – 0.00

A couple of things surprised me here, one being how much Darnell Nurse played against Perry 5v5 and how badly Sekera struggled against him.

That’s it! I was thinking of doing up Ryan Kesler too but I don’t consider him to be a player that the Oilers will be wanting to “shut down”. Cogliano is another I see as a player not really considered an offensive threat to the Oilers, so I skipped him as well.

Multiple metrics would probably paint a better picture but I’m a simple guy and I like my hockey the same. Adding more numbers to try and create a more clear idea of who the Oilers should deploy against which Ducks might just muddy the waters that much more though.

Not sure if this helps or hinders your understanding of what the Oilers have in their defense going into the Anaheim series, but I guess I’m just tired of hearing how good the other team’s defenses are and I’d like to hear a bit more on how Kris Russell is helping the team, how Andrej Sekera’s performances have really gone unnoticed for too long, how Oscar Klefbom is an emerging no.1 defender, how Darnell Nurse is really coming into his own as a two-way threat from the blueline, how Matt Benning could very well be the best college signing in a very long time, and lastly, how Adam Larsson might just be the top shutdown defenseman in the NHL.
