Alongside Oilers’ newfound depth, Draisaitl looks to grow from past losses
  • Usually, when a team sweeps a playoff series, you look at the opponent and say, “Man, they just couldn’t handle that team.” But when the Winnipeg Jets swept the Edmonton Oilers last spring — winning three games in overtime — the analytics told us that Edmonton had actually had the better of the play through four games.

“It’s really hard to pinpoint one thing,” said Draisaitl, when asked what Edmonton could improve on. “It’s the little things: We couldn’t score at the right time. When it was 3-1 or in overtime, we couldn’t find that goal that really put the game out of reach. We couldn’t score at the right time.”

  • This year’s team is deeper. Derek Ryan’s faceoff prowess will allow Draisaitl to sit out some key defensive draws, and be more fresh. Zach Hyman will free Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to stay on Draisaitl’s wing long-term, and the hope is that Warren Foegele will beef up production from the bottom-six.

“We’ve learned from last year. Maybe the bounces weren’t there, but that’s also something you have to earn. Maybe that is something that is good for a team. As much as it hurts in that moment, we’ll be better for it.”

  • With Hyman on board, and the maturation of Jesse Puljujarvi, there’s no more talk about whether Draisaitl and Connor McDavid will play together or apart.

“I think they kind of like it that way,” said Tippett. “They both want to take the responsibility of making us a more balanced team. (Uniting them) is a nice card to have in our pocket, if you need it.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Leon and Connor can like leading their own lines all they want, but together they are a nuclear deterrent and if the Oilers are down a goal or two with 5 minutes left in a game, you can be sure that they’ll be seeing upwards of four of those five minutes together as they attempt to tie the game up.

How can a team learn to win if they don’t lose some meaningful games? As we know, the Oilers should’ve beaten WPG in the playoffs last year but they got tripped up by a netminder who’s never played better and they lost the battle with regards to some small, seemingly insignificant, plays.

A veteran team knows how to prevent making those small mistakes and they know how to plough through them and forget about them very quickly.

We’ll see if this older more experienced team can exhibit those traits in 2021-22.

Oilers training camp observations: Evan Bouchard looks ‘like he belongs,’ Tyler Benson’s early impact and more
  • Bouchard isn’t just here to stay; he’s here to make an impact.
  • Bouchard has mostly lined up against the top line. That means the righty has seen a steady diet of left winger Zach Hyman, known as one of the league’s top board players and forecheckers, and centre Connor McDavid.
  • The top three lines appear set and a 10th forward slot was pegged for Josh Archibald, whose place on the team is now in question… That leaves two or three regular jobs and four or five roster spots up for grabs up front, assuming the Oilers keep 14 forwards.
  • A clear front-runner in that group is Benson.
  • He’s leaner, dropping five pounds from his 190-pound frame while building muscle.

“You just watch him play out there. His confidence is at a point where he knows he can play in this league,” Tippett said. “He put the work in this summer. He looks quicker. He’s more determined.

  • Benson is competing with Shore and Perlini for the fourth-line spot.
  • At camp, Turris has lined up at right wing, where he got spot duty to finish the season. Only this time, there has been a discernible difference in how Turris looks on the ice compared to how he looked last season. He said he worked on gaining strength in his legs, so his skating would be more explosive.

BLH’s Thoughts: Louie DeBrusk was saying on Oilers Now this week that Benson started off really well at last year’s camp and then kinda trailed off as it wore on. I hope that doesn’t happen this year but that being said, things don’t get any easier as we draw closer to the end of TC and there are two other guys with NHL experience and size fighting for that 4th line LW spot too.

WGR 550: TSN insider Darren Dreger said the Buffalo Sabres and Jack Eichel remain at an impasse over how he should rehab the herniated disc in his neck and the best medical course of action for the 24-year-old center.

FLORIDA HOCKEY NOW: Jimmy Murphy reports one NHL executive claims the Buffalo Sabres asking price for Jack Eichel remains high. “It’s insane what they’re still asking. They’re going to be stuck with him and his value is going to decline even more.”

SAN JOSE HOCKEY NOW: Sheng Peng reports Sharks GM Doug Wilson said he’s had “several conversations” with the agent for pending free agent center Tomas Hertl. He indicated he would keep those discussions in confidence.

FLORIDA HOCKEY NOW: Jimmy Murphy reports “numerous NHL teams” have reached out to Wilson about Hertl. It appears he’ll be staying in San Jose for the time being. Meanwhile, those clubs that asked about him are waiting to see how their rosters shake out through training camp and the opening month of the season.

OILERS NOTES: Derek Ryan checks the boxes on third line and face-offs
  • Darnell Nurse’s NHL nickname is ‘Doc’ for obvious reasons, and now we bring you third-line centre Derek Ryan, who has been called ‘Doc’ in Carolina, Calgary, and now here.
  • Ryan, Warren Foegele and Zack Kassian were a handful during the scrimmage Saturday, and it looks like an ideal, aggressive unit once the season starts.
  • Ryan and Kailer Yamamoto are both from Spokane, Wash., and Yamamoto once attended hockey schools Ryan ran in the summer months.

“He’s like my second dad. I work out with him, skate with him,” said Yamamoto, 22, who is 12 years younger than Ryan.

This ‘N That

  • Stuart Skinner and Ilya Konovalov, the likely tandem on the farm in Bakersfield will split the goaltending Sunday against the Calgary Flames.
  • Tippett says neither McDavid nor Draisaitl will be playing.
  • Good chance the Ryan camp line plays.
  • Camp standouts Benson and Ryan McLeod will probably on the road list.
  • Very good bet Evan Bouchard and his defence partner Slater Koekkoek will be in Calgary.
  • Still no sign of Josh Archibald, out of quarantine for several days now, with any practice groups.
  • Khaira has been on a fourth line with Dylan Strome and Ryan Carpenter at Hawks’ camp.
  • Caleb Jones is in the fourth defence pair in Chicago with the first group.

BLH’s Thoughts: I like that Dave Tippett is going to go with the young guys in these exhibition games to start and rest the big boys.

Here’s my lineup prediction for tonight’s game vs. Calgary:

Foegele-Ryan-Kassian
Benson-McLeod-Marody
Perlini-Shore-Turris
Esposito-Malone-Sceviour

Lagesson-Ceci
Koekkoek/Bouchard
Broberg-Berglund

Skinner/Konovalov

There may be an extra forward or defenseman, I’m not sure.

How much do you wanna bet that Ryan and Yamamoto are going to see a fair bit of time together this time? There’s no hurt in tossing them on a line either with the chemistry they’ve got from training with one another in the past. Ryan could teach Killer a thing or two and Yamo is more likely to absorb those lessons I feel.

The “Caleb Jones is better than Duncan Keith crowd” have been pretty quiet since the line combos in Chicago were posted… Weird… 4th pair out of training camp doesn’t sound like an NHL defenseman though. That said, good luck to the lad.

Oilers holding Archibald off of the ice until he gets the poke? How deep do you think Archie is going to dig his feet in on this with Alberta falling apart at the seams during this 4th wave of COVID?

Why Tyler Tullio’s skill set is a good match for the Oilers — and makes him sure to be a fan favorite
  • A heart and soul, rugged, “dirty areas” player, he is just getting started in the organization, and the pandemic has robbed him of playing in front of a full house of Edmonton fans for two training camps.
  • Oilers fans will love him based on his aggressive style and ability.Oilers fans will love him based on his aggressive style and ability.
  • Among recent Oilers draft picks from the OHL, Tullio’s 1.07 points per game in his draft year is a close match for Ryan McLeod in 2018 (1.08).

“I try to model my game after the grittiness of Brad Marchand. He’s not the biggest player. He scores, goes to dirty areas. Bit of a pest. But he’s a winner and does everything right.”

  • This is a confident young man, and that quality probably explains why he can be such a pain to all comers despite being slightly under six feet tall and not yet at his adult playing weight.
  • He’s a fine NHL prospect, chosen by Edmonton at least one full round later than he should have gone.

BLH’s Thoughts: I’ll say this, his playing style is sure reminiscent of Marchand. Just the way that he gets around the ice, you can see the comparison.

I never got much of a chance to view a lot of this players footage before he was drafted but from the little I’ve gotten during training camp and the rookie games, he’s going to be a really fun one to keep an eye on. Will he be the next Esa Tikkanen or are we looking at another Braden Christoffer/Greg Chase?

NHL Rumors: Kraken, Blackhawks, Bruins, Rangers, Sharks, Maple Leafs
  • Kraken general manager Ron Francis reported in his press conference Friday, that Yanni Gourde’s recovery from injury was progressing “ahead of schedule.” This means he could be back in the lineup earlier than the previously projected early-December return, which is great news for the team as he’s expected to be a big part of their offense.
  • NBC Sports Chicago’s Charlie Roumeliotis reports Kane isn’t fully recovered from an injury that he appears to have suffered before the start of the Edmonton bubble in 2020. The belief is that Kane will be able to play through the injury and Kane says he’s “optimistic with where [he’s] going.” What the injury is, remains somewhat of a mystery.
  • As per Luke Fox of Sportsnet, there are a few pending 2022 NHL free agents worth keeping an eye on. Among them is Patrice Bergeron who is in the last year of his deal. Fox says, expect the multiple-time Selke Award winner to look around a bit next summer as he waits for a formal deal from the Bruins.
  • Fox also notes that the pending Mika Zibanejad deal with the Rangers could come this season and speculation is that the deal might be around eight figures AAV when all is said and done. That means the Rangers are prepared to give him $10 million-plus over eight years.
  • Jonas Siegel of The Athletic notes that the Maple Leafs have slotted John Tavares to play in the first exhibition game for the Leafs so that he can get that game out of the way and put his return to the ice in the past.

Veteran Kyle Turris looks to bounce back for Oilers after humbling season
  • last season was painful, also humbling. He went on waivers, he went to the taxi-squad, he played only nine of the last 33 league games, including back-to-back games against Winnipeg where he played 6:53 and 7:21.
  • He only averaged 12 minutes a game with two goals and those five points.
  • If he makes this team, it will be as fourth right-winger after Jesse Puljujarvi, Kailer Yamamoto and Zack Kassian. Or, as a 13th or 14th forward.
  • The game is extremely quick and very young now and Turris is neither, just turned 32 last month. But he is still smart and is motivated, and over the summer he was at Rogers Place often working with fitness coach Chad Drummond on the things he absolutely needed to.

“I worked with Chad every day … he was great. Worked on my strength, my explosiveness. Putting on strength in my butt and legs. I’ve noticed changes in my body and I feel really good,” said Turris

  • With Derek Ryan and McLeod as the No. 3 and No. 4 centres on the depth chart, there is no room for Turris there, which is why he’ll have to make the team as a winger.

BLH’s Thoughts: Turris’ problem last year, to my eyes, was that he seemed to be a step behind the play and he didn’t have any confidence.

That said, at the end of the year after being sat for quite a while, I noticed a renewed effort in his game. He seemed to be more tenacious on the puck and there was more pep in his step.

I’m thinking he bulked up and got a bit stronger knowing that he’ll be used on the wing primarily in 2021-22 and he’ll need that to be more useful in the muck. There are question marks surrounding the availability of Josh Archibald and if he’s absent this year, Turris may very well step in on that 4th line with Ryan McLeod and Tyler Benson (or Devin Shore).

The Cult of Hockey

Edmonton Oilers have plenty of depth at the “depth winger” spot, but who will rise to the top?
  • …the competition is fierce for spots on the fourth line, especially in the continuing absence of Josh Archibald who continues to skate on his own as both he and the team try to come to terms with his status as the lone unvaccinated NHL regular in Canada.
  • Turris had gotten some kudos on this front (off-season training) over the summer, and backed that up by ranking in the “top three or four” in Wednesday’s off-ice fitness testing as per Tippett.
  • In a similar vein Benson posted by far his best results to date in his sixth Oilers training camp, some of the priors having been hampered by lingering health issues
  • On the ice Benson had a second straight good day, playing a prominent role in Team Blue’s 5-2 triumph over Team White in the first full scrimmage of camp.
  • Turris looked good in the drills, himself drilling a couple of excellent shots that rippled the twine. He’s been keeping his feet moving, and the puck moving too. I’ve seen him as engaging in the puck battles, but not winning quite enough of them, an observation that carried right on into the scrimmage.
  • The other right-shot winger who is somewhere in the mix is Colton Sceviour.
  • Sceviour caught my eye on one sequence where he made a good play in the neutral zone to gain the red line and dump the puck in deep, then another to win the race to it in the corner. But it came undone quickly when he his blind backhand pass up the boards led to a jailbreak the other way.
  • Benson is in a multi-way battle with Devin Shore and Brendan Perlini. They are currently teamed up on a line with Turris, an interesting trio of proven but flawed NHL veterans.

BLH’s Thoughts: The line of Foegele, Ryan, and Yamamoto shone at the scrimmage yesterday and that’s news to my ears. I’ve been championing that line combination all summer and I just feel like Killer and McLovin’ combined with Ryan or McLeod will form one of the best 3rd lines in the NHL.

I thought it interesting to hear Jason Gregor say that Benson is outworking Cooper Marody, but I’m not shocked. Marody’s work rate simply isn’t where it needs to be for a professional hockey player that wants to play in the NHL. This guy should be going balls to the all on every shift, doing whatever he can to impress the coaches so that he can get an extra day in the main camp when others are being sent to Bakersfield.

That said, it was only day two of TC yesterday and there’s still time to get in some good performances in the exhibition games coming up this week.

STLTODAY.COM: Jim Thomas reports Vladimir Tarasenko said little about his tumultuous offseason in which he requested a trade from the St. Louis Blues during an interview yesterday.

“I don’t see any reason to discuss it now,” said Tarasenko. “Camp starts. I don’t want to be a distraction in the room. I’m here to work. I’m healthy, I’m happy to play hockey again.”

TSNToronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas shot down trade speculation about Ilya Mikheyev on Wednesday. Asked about Mikheyev’s trade request, Dubas said the 26-year-old winger was going to be on the team “and is going to be a big part of the team.” He referred questions about the trade request to Mikheyev’s agent.

TSN’s Shawn Simpson recently speculated Logan Brown could be plucked off waivers by the Arizona Coyotes if things don’t work out for him with the Ottawa Senators. He spent the summer in Arizona and is close with Coyotes stars Clayton Keller and Jakob Chychrun.

OILERS NOTES: Kailer Yamamoto told to start firing away
  • Edmonton Oilers winger Kailer Yamamoto has worked on his shot this summer so he can score goals from outside the dangerous blue-paint, where he’s fearless but often overmatched in terms of size.
  • Yamamoto only took 69 shots in 52 games last season, playing a chunk of the time with Leon Draisaitl as his centre, so he was gifted with a superstar passing him the puck. But he’ll need to score more from distance to be a top-six player.

“I think there’s a little bit more zip to his shot, I can see that definitely. A lot of times, it’s a mindset, right? When you get a two-on-one, when you have a chance in that tight space or an open net or breakaway that you really bear down and make the most of it.

  • While Kyle Turris is on right-wing at camp, Tippett also sees him as a part-time centre if he makes the team.
  • Winger Kirill Maksimov, expected to play in Bakersfield after playing last year in Moscow, still isn’t on the ice after missing rookie camp. “He’s finally in the country. He was dealing with some immigration and vaccination stuff. In a day or two, he should be here,” said Tippett

BLH’s Thoughts: I still maintain that Killer was dealing with something that was hindering his ability to take shots last year. I’m pretty jacked to hear that he put a real focus on improving that aspect of his game though and in addition to that, he’s looking a lot thicker. Hopefully that will go a ways to keeping him healthier.

Check out the highlights below from yesterday’s scrimmage and you’ll see Yamo rip a blistering wrister from the slot over Mike Smith’s glove.

QUIET STORM

FIRST DAY LINES AND PAIRS

  • Hyman-McDavid-Puljujarvi. This line might produce a 40+ goal man and two more who hit 20+ tallies. That’s a monster.
  • RNH-Draisaitl-Yamamoto. The logical second line, although names like Warren Foegele and Zack Kassian may find their way into the conversation.
  • Foegele-Ryan-Kassian.  More talent on this third line than we’ve seen in several years.
  • Perlini-Shore-Turris. This is one of two units that could reasonably be called the fourth line.
  • Benson-McLeod-Marody. The new ‘Bulldog’ line is going to get a look, Godspeed to all.
  • Esposito-Malone-Sceviour. Sceviour begins on an AHL line.
  • Nurse-Barrie. They’ll play a ton. I think some believe Bouchard will eventually take over from Barrie on this pairing…
  • Koekkoek-Bouchard. Tippett is hyping Bouchard in a big way, and that does signal to me that the bottom two pairs are going to be equal in playing time at the end of the season, if not sooner.
  • Lagesson-Ceci. Ceci is probably the third or fourth most important defenseman on the team, depending on how much of a role you expect Bouchard to play this season.
  • Broberg-Berglund. This is the sport where miracles come from. Tippett and Holland can’t expect it, can’t say they need it, but they surely do.

BLH’s Thoughts: By the sounds of things, Tyler Benson is stealing the show at camp so far. He’s come in and he means business with his new flowing locks and apparently the boots have gotten quicker.

Now, if you’ve been reading the content here over the summer, I’ve said on plenty of occasions that Tyler Benson probably isn’t an NHL-quality talent, but I’ve also left a caveat. That being, unless he gets faster…

Well, he’s brought a new gear to TC this season and I reckon he’s brought a more cutthroat attitude as well. He’s not taking any prisoners this year and that 4th line LW spot is in his sights. Good on him, I hope he makes it!

Why Colton Sceviour could be an important addition for the Oilers
  • The need for a versatile winger became more pronounced with the Archibald news, and Sceviour’s skill set is a good match. He is undersized and a good skater, and he has surprising skill.
  • Archibald’s past three seasons show a slightly more successful scorer — more efficient than Sceviour, owing to a handsome 14.7 shooting percentage (including McDavid minutes).
  • Sceviour scores his points the old-fashioned way on the depth lines…
  • Sceviour has posted 1.30 points per 60 or better in the previous four seasons, so that’s a repeatable skill based on a significant sample size.
  • Offensively, Archibald produces a lot of chances on broken plays or quick outlets into an area to which he can skate to give a clear path.
  • Sceviour is also a good skater with many of the same qualities. He is superior as a thief, with his even-strength takeaways per 60 (0.95) towering over Archibald (0.41).
  • Sceviour is a capable replacement. The Oilers could have him on hand only to play during times when Archibald is in quarantine…

BLH’s Thoughts: From what I’ve seen of Sceviour in years passed, he’s a gritty little guy with some zip and he can score a goal now and then. The thing what separates Archibald from him is that when Archie hits a guy, he goes through him.

LT asked a good question in that post and that was, what if you woke one day and read that Archibald and Sceviour were traded for one another? Your reaction might lack any sort of enthusiasm because they’re basically the same player.

I don’t know what the club is going to do with Mr. Plandemic, but from the verbiage coming via the Edmonton sports media, it sounds like they club is giving him some time to carefully reconsider his stance and then as we get closer to the end of camp, they’ll start to apply some real pressure.

In the meantime, I don’t think they’re going to make it easy for Archibald. They’re already holding him out of skates with the rest of the group. I don’t imagine he’s attending any group meetings or other settings that involve many people in the same room.

We’ll see how this goes, but if I had to guess, I think two things might happen, he’ll either get the vaccination OR he’ll push his contract a year and simply not play. If he does opt out of the year his cap space will be available for Edmonton to use.

Three Questions: The Ken Holland Presser
  • Arguably the most shocking moment from Ken Holland’s presser came when he revealed that Alex Stalock will be unlikely to play in 2021-22 because of a heart condition…
  • After wrapping up his press conference, Ken Holland jumped on Oilers Now and let Josh Archibald’s name slip (worst kept secret anyway) when asked about what will happen with the unvaccinated player on his roster…
  • According to PuckPedia, unvaccinated players that can’t travel with the team won’t count against the cap and aren’t paid as a result, so that makes me wonder if there’d be an appetite to simply suspend Archibald and recoup the savings?
  • Another thing that’s annoying a bunch of Oilers fans right now is the fact that Duncan Keith can’t participate in the first week of training camp as he remains in quarantine after getting back from the States for his COVID shot.
  • So how much does this first week of training camp really matter in the grand scheme of things? I honestly don’t know, but I can tell you with certainty that having Keith miss these tune-up games is a lot easier to swallow than if he was going to miss 30+ games like Archibald is going to.

BLH’s Thoughts: The first week of camp isn’t going to affect Keith in any way, shape, or form and I think the Oilers can survive quite well without Josh Archibald too.

What I’m wondering is how NHL teams might use unvaccinated players to circumvent the salary cap? It’s a dog eat dog world, folks. Don’t discount the idea.
