Oil on Whyte (Lynch)

Could a trade with the Rangers solve one big problem?
  • One possible goalie that could help the team would come from the New York Rangers. With Igor Shesterkin locked up for the next four seasons at over 5.5 million, New York might want to move their other young goalie Alexandar Georgiev.
  • Last season he put up a .905 save percentage and a goals-against-average of 2.71. The 25-year-old has played in 96 games over the course of his career including 19 last season.
  • Edmonton could try and get Georgiev from the Rangers in return for Koskinen and a second-round pick in 2023.
  • Edmonton gets a younger goalie that they can hopefully make the starter in the next few seasons, and New York gets a couple of draft picks as well as a netminder to serve as the backup for the season.

BLH’s Thoughts: As I’ve said before, there are some who are quite close to the organization that wonder if Georgiev is even an upgrade on Koskinen at this point. The other thing we have to consider is what the Russian netminder will be asking for on his next contract because there’s always a flight risk with these guys and I don’t know if the Oilers would be willing to bet long term on him yet.

As for Koskinen being a backup option for New York, I think that there might be an appetite to bring Henrik Lundqvist back if he’s medically fit and give him a proper send off. Also, they’ve got Keith Kinkaid and Adam Huska down in the minors that they could bring up… No real need for a $4.5M Koskinen.

The fact of the matter is, Ken Holland might’ve missed his window to grab a top-15 goalie and now he’s got a pile of salary cap tied down… If he wants to go the UFA route, next summer may present the best option with the likes of Fleury, Kuemper, Merzlikins, Korpisalo, Campbell, Martin Jones, and Holtby set to hit the market.

But if he waits or misses out on his targets, the following summer’s UFA crop is very thin in net unless he’s willing to sign an older netminder like Jonathan Quick, Semyon Varlamov, Frederik Andersen, or Jake Allen.

Now, Tristan Jarry and Alex Nedeljkovic will be UFAs that year, but if they make it to the first day of free agency without a deal, there’s going to be plenty of competition and they’ll be demanding a shit ton of money…

Tick tock, baby!

At long last, Edmonton Oilers appear serious about developing a goaltender in-house

2021 Edmonton Oilers prospects: #16 Olivier Rodrigue

  • Rodrigue turned pro this past season, not exactly ideal timing. He took the opportunity to get his feet wet in the Austrian League, playing a substantial 23 games with Graz EC and posting a credible .908 save percentage, ranking him in the middle of the pack in the ICEHL. But this as a raw rookie, just 20 years old, playing in a strange environment on the wide ice for the first time. I give him a passing grade for both initiative and performance.
  • In a normal world, Rodrigue could look forward to another season backing up Skinner at the AHL level. But this is 2021, and what’s “normal”?
  • Instead, the youngster finds himself further down a depth chart that has added Ilya Konovalov, a third-round pick from 2019 who is two years older than Rodrigue even as he was drafted a year later.
  • What they do have, is a place to put Rodrigue. That surely is with the ECHL’s Wichita Thunder, the squad which in ordinary circumstances he would have played for last season.
  • Expectations for 2021-22: The #1 role with Wichita Thunder and plenty of playing time. With his second-round pedigree and a couple of different pro experiences already under his belt, it’s reasonable to expect Rodrigue to be one of the better stoppers in the ECHL.

BLH’s Thoughts: I’m feeling obliged to agree with Bruce here and there’s no shame in Rodrigue heading to Wichita to play out the year in the ECHL. He could regain some confidence down there, but with that in mind, a goalie can get lost in the shuffle sometimes and if he’s not worked himself out of the ECHL after one season, he risks becoming another Dylan Wells or Tyler Bunz.

NHL Rumors: Top Remaining Free Agents
  • James Neal (F):To date there’s been little interest from teams in adding him. He is a prime candidate for a PTO.
  • Sami Vatanen (D): He’s only 30 years-old so he should at least get a PTO. The Oilers are rumored to possibly give him one.
  • Ryan Donato (F): Donato scored 20 points in 50 games last season and should be picked up before the season starts.
  • Jason Demers (D): He’s a prime candidate for an invite to a training camp on a PTO.
  • Nikita Kusev (F): He could be worth a cheap flyer or at least an invite to camp on a PTO.
  • Tyler Bozak (C): He has a one year deal from the Blues available to him, but is currently seeing what else is on the market.
  • Eric Staal (C): Staal could bring value to a team’s fourth line next season at a bargain price. His leadership and experience would be worth the money alone.
  • Travis Zajac (C): There’s a rumor that he has also agreed to return to the Island.
  • Zdeno Chara (D): The 44 year-old defender isn’t even sure if he will play next season or retire. “I think it’s not always a decision I can make myself,” If he does play, he’d be a great value add to shore up a team’s bottom pair.
  • Artem Anisimov (C): Anisimov was recently in Detroit skating with Dylan Larkin and Vlad Namestnikov. He could see an offer or a PTO from the Red Wings.

Edmonton Oilers: All The Players Playing For A Contract This Next Season
  • …according to CapFriendly, the Edmonton Oilers are projected to have just 6.9 million dollars in cap space next offseason…
  • That is not a lot of space to work with, especially when we look at the list of players that need contracts…
    • Kyle Turris (UFA),
    • Josh Archibald(UFA)
    • Jesse Puljujarvi (RFA)
    • Ryan McLeod (RFA)
    • Brendan Perlini (RFA)
    • Kris Russell (UFA)
    • William Lagesson (RFA)
    • Mikko Koskinen (UFA)
    • Alex Stalock (UFA)
  • McLeod probably won’t need more than a million and Puljujarvi might be able to ask for a bit more depending on how this season goes.
  • One would expect that a guy like Josh Archibald will probably be let go and probably also Kyle Turris.
  • Any type of deal this team makes this season will definitely have to be for players that can help them on expiring deals.
  • The Oilers do not have the cap space to take on more money for the next couple of years to come.

BLH’s Thoughts: If the Oilers are going to make some trades this year, expect them to move out salary that would normally be on their roster next season if they weren’t traded. That could be Devin Shore, Zack Kassian, Mike Smith, Slater Koekkoek, or Oscar Klefbom.

Koskinen, Russell, Stalock, and Turris won’t be coming back and I’m not sure William Lagesson gets qualified IF he’s with the club at the end of the season.

I would be willing to bet that Josh Archibald will be re-signed though. He’s a very important part of the team’s PK.

As for the RFAs, I think that the club will have an easier time with Jesse now that his agent and Connor McDavid’s agent are working under the same umbrella.

McLeod will be bridged on the cheap and Perlini is probably in the same boat as William Lagesson unless he comes in and proves himself to be a better option than Dylan Holloway and Devin Shore going forward.

ON’s 2021 Prospects Countdown – No. 16: Philip Kemp

Position: Defence
Shoots: Right
Nationality: United States
Date of Birth: Feb. 12, 1999
Drafted: 2017, No. 208 overall (EDM)
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 203 lbs

  • Kemp doesn’t produce much offensively, but the value in his game comes from tight, steady defensive play. Quick, puck-moving defencemen have been in vogue in the NHL in recent years, but there’s certainly still room for a big, physical defender who can shut things down.

“He’ll never be a ‘wow’ player but he’s a big, rangy, competitive defenceman who is incredibly bright. Probably not top three, or in top-two pair but can he be uncomfortable for opponents in his zone, breaking up a play. And the puck going the other way, can he get that puck moving in an effective way? Yeah, I think Phil has developed his game to that point.

“He’s also grown up and played with really good players. What I worry about with players who haven’t done that is they think they’re better than they are and they’re not. And they don’t have any understanding what their role is playing with top-end players.

“That’s why Ben Lovejoy was a good player for the Pittsburgh Penguins. That’s why Brian Dumoulin has found his way to the NHL and been steady. That’s an important quality. Phil knows how to play with good players. He has really, really improved.” – Craig Button (TSN)

BLH’s Thoughts: With regards to the Oilers search for their next shutdown cycle-breaker, I like Kemp in this role more than I do Filip Berglund. I like his size and the fact that he can play with elite hockey players because I believe that to be a skill on its own. The fact that Kemp has worn a letter on his uniform and been part of leadership groups all throughout his playing career also intrigues me and it wouldn’t surprise me if he was wearing one in Bakersfield soon.

Next summer the Predators have two key players that are heading for UFA status. Both Filip Forsberg and Mattias Ekholm will be able to cash in, but GM David Poile is trying to get them extended. According to published reports, conversations have started with Ekholm.

  • “I think shortly before training camp we’ll reach out to Filip Forsberg and [Mattias Ekholm] camp and sort of get a lay of the land as to where Filip’s thoughts are right now,” – Predators GM David Poile (NHL.com)

(Kirill) Kaprizov reportedly has a deal on the table with CSKA Moscow that would kick in September 1 if he can’t come to terms with Minnesota. According to Frank Seravalli, there’s been no offer made since April.

  • “I have talked to him a bit and hope it works out. I do not interfere in his contract talk, I just hear how it goes. We talk together as friends. But if it was up to me, I think it works. Once you make it to the NHL; even though the KHL is a good league, there is something special about the NHL.” –  Mats Zuccarello via VG

Projecting the Oilers Best Value Contracts for the 2021-22 NHL Season

Tyson Barrie

  • Say what you want about Barrie — and a lot of people say a lot of negative things about his game — he’s consistently good at what he’s good at.
    • His $4.5 million deal for the next three years is team-friendly.
    • If he can raise his defensive game, be a bit more reliable at both ends and get the analytics supporters on his side, his contract could be a massive win for Edmonton…

Kailer Yamamoto

  • Yamamoto should fall in around the $2 million mark for this coming season. When that happens, expect Yamamoto to get back to being more the player he was in 2019-20 than he was in 2020-21
    • There’s going to be a mandate for him to shoot more in 2021-22 and should he listen, he’ll be another dangerous part of the Oilers top six.

Ryan McLeod

  • McLeod got a cup of coffee in the NHL last season and he didn’t do much outside of prove that he’s ready to be a more regular NHL player.
    • If he gets regular minutes, he could be a player that really clicks and starts to create.

Jesse Puljujarvi

  • If Puljujarvi takes the next logical step that many believe he can and will, this player could do some serious damage offensively for the Oilers this season.
    • on a $1.175 million deal, that’s a big win for GM Ken Holland and coach Dave Tippett…

Evan Bouchard

  • Tippett has already said he expects Bouchard to quickly move up the roster and many insiders who follow the Oilers closely believe Bouchard could be a 40-50 point defenseman if deployed in the right situations next season.

BLH’s Thoughts: If all five of these players can come into next season and NOT regress, they will be value contracts.

My feeling is that Killer is going to get some time on the third line and I really think that would be an excellent place for him to start regaining some of the confidence he lost last year. It’s not easy for a young player to go through the kind of scoring slump he did in the final 30 games of last season.

Puljujarvi, I’m not sure if we’ll see him “pop” next year, as they like to say, because I’m thinking he might get shifted around now that Zach Hyman has signed in Edmonton. Now, that said, he’s in a contract year and players tend to perform well when they’re playing for a new deal.

The only thing stopping Evan Bouchard from starting the year on the Oilers 2nd pair is his lack of experience and he’ll be getting that this upcoming season. There’s a lot of belief in this young man and the club is going to handle him very delicately.

I have pretty low expectations for Ryan McLeod right now. I think if he can hit the 20pt mark, I’ll be pretty happy.

As for Tyson Barrie, he’s going to do what he does, score points. I think the fact that he didn’t receive a single Norris Trophy vote is going to spur him on to be a better all-round defenseman and having a former winner of the trophy on the roster will go a long way in that regard. I doubt he’ll win it, but just to get some votes will go a long way.

HELLO?
  • …can we identify the best candidates for NHL success from the Bakersfield Condors most recent season?
    • Ryan McLeod posts a strong NHLE (39.9) while also having the range of skills we discussed earlier. I’d count him as more of a sure thing for an NHL career
    • Tyler Benson and Cooper Marody have the resume of NHL players, but foot speed is more important every year and Ken Holland spent the summer piling left wingers on the roster.
    • The Oilers prospects have a story to tell, with Niemelainen likely a third pairing option and we’ll have to wait and see on Kesselring plus Kemp.
    • Stuart Skinner had a good year but you’d like to see another, Rodrique is just getting started.

BLH’s Thoughts: My ultimate hope for Ryan McLeod is that he finds his way into loving the muck and he turns into a Roope Hintz-type sans the injury problems.

With the way that the team is bringing Stu Skinner along, I wonder, are we looking at another Jimmy Howard?

ESPN: Greg Wyshynski reports Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov is entering the final year of his six-year contract. He asked Panthers general manager Bill Zito if there was a date when he’d have to consider trading the 25-year-old center.

NHL.COM: In a recent mailbag segment, Mike Heika was asked how the Dallas Stars will address their logjam in goal if Ben Bishop should return to action at some point this season. He remains sidelined recovering from surgery last fall.

NHL.COM: David Satriano believes the Stars could seek another veteran forward this season rather than relying on young players in their system.

Big Swedish d-man is just the kind of defender Edmonton Oilers are looking for. Maybe, just maybe
  • Big Swedish d-man Philip Berglund is just the kind of defenceman that the Edmonton Oilers are looking for.
  • Berglund has the size, the shot and he can zip a pass. But is he agile enough to keep up with the NHL game? Is he sharp and tough enough to consistently block opposing forwards from making attacking plays around the net?
  • He’s got abundant experience in Sweden’s top league, where he’s already played five full seasons and seen his ice time rise from 9:30 per game in 2016-17 to 19:37 last year, 2020-21.
  • In his draft year of 2016, top scout Oilers Bob Green said: “He’s a big right-hand shot defenceman, can really move the puck, good hockey sense.”
  • Edmonton is looking for large men on defence who can block attackers and quickly and accurately move the puck to Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, hitting them in stride as opposed to ringing the puck off the boards.

“His game has really grown. He’s now an all-situations defenceman with Skelleftea…. He’s a guy that has improved his skating. That was the big issue with him coming out of his draft year, could he skate? He’s improved his skating, it’s more than adequate now at that level and he’s a guy we’re going to have to decide on. He’s certainly put himself in a position to get strong consideration.” – Scott Howson (January, 2020)

  • Expectations for 2021-22: That he earns a job on Top 4 in Bakersfield, gets special teams time there and establishes himself as a strong AHL player, maybe even getting a few games with the Oilers when injury strikes.

BLH’s Thoughts: Anybody else feels like it’s a tad late in the day for Berglund to be starting his North American pro career? No disrespect to him, I’m just not sure what his or the organization’s expectations are here because by my count, I’ve got two or three other players that I think Dave Tippett would use ahead of the Swede in case of an injury to Bouchard, Barrie, or Ceci…

So, the question is, how long would Berglund be willing to develop in Edmonton’s system down in Bakersfield and what are the odds that he could be the Oilers’ next top shutdown dman on the right side? I would think that Michael Kesselring and Phil Kemp will have something to say about that…

Competition, eh? The Ken Holland special…

Edmonton Oilers player review and 2021-22 preview: Leon Draisaitl
  • In 56 games this year, Draisaitl didn’t disappoint. He scored 31 goals and 84 points putting him fourth and second in each category, respectively.
  • At 5×5, he scored 2.64 points per hour, a dip from 2019-20’s 2.89, but an increase from 2018-19’s 2.57.
  • With him on the ice this year, the Oilers controlled 50.58 percent of the shot attempts, 62.5 percent of the goals and 50.77 percent of the expected goals.
  • His 5×5 goals against per hour fell from 3.2 in 2019-20, to 2.17 this past season and his shot attempts against per hour fell from 60.17 to 56.08 this year.
  • His (faceoff) win percentage jumped up to 55.7 percent — a far cry from the 50.9 he had averaged in his first six seasons.

BLH’s Thoughts: I love that Leon’s two-way game is really coming along. That said, he’s got a ways to go before he hits Sasha Barkov levels… Check out this side-by-side comparison of the two players’ seasons from 2020-21 right here and that’ll give you a good indication as to how far Draisaitl has to go before he gets league-wide respect for this 200ft game.

I’m curious though, would you rather Leon keep up the scoring pace with Connor McDavid every year or would you be happy to see him sacrifice a bit of that offense if that meant he was a Selke Trophy nominee each season?

Nick Foligno Comments on Leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs

  • “I just feel like this is the right fit for me and my family. Ultimately I’m a dad [with] a family of three kids, and I want them to be just as comfortable. Because a lot of times, how they feel off the ice makes me play that much better on it. And I think that’s why I chose Boston.”

Foligno’s family dealt with a health scare early on in their daughter’s life and it ended up his daughter Milana had to go to Boston at the time for care.

Ottawa Senators: 2 Players Most Likely to be Traded Next Season

  • Chris Tierney: Tierney is entering the final season of his contract and will be an unrestricted free agent next summer…. expect Tierney to be dealt at the deadline for some assets.
  • Nikita Zaitsev: The team has a number of younger options they can play on the right-side, so if they decide to continue to rebuild, Zaitsev will be dangled on the trade market for some assets.

Vancouver Canucks: 2 Players Most Likely to Be Traded Next Season

  • Brandon Sutter: The Canucks are expected to compete for a playoff spot next season, but if they struggle, Sutter will be dealt at the deadline for an asset or two.
  • Tyler Myers: Out of the core on defense, Myers is the most likely to be moved. The towering defender has three seasons left on his deal at $6 million and could fetch a solid forward in return should Jim Benning decide to move him.

Oilers’ Offseason Moves Reunite Former Teammates
  • ..while they may be new to Edmonton, these six players are not entirely strangers to their new teammates – nor to one another, for that matter. Many have played together previously in their NHL careers and share some notable connections.
  • The coolest connection comes between Foegele and Ryan, even if they have skated in the same jersey only twice, with the Carolina Hurricanes late in the 2017-18 season.
  • In addition to getting back together with Foegele, Ryan has re-joined Oilers goalie Mike Smith as combatants in the Battle of Alberta. Only this time, they’re on the other side.
  • On July 28, the opening day of free agency, the Oilers inked deals with three players that were together on the 2019-20 Toronto Maple Leafs: Hyman, Ceci, and blueliner Tyson Barrie…
  • Before being dealt to Toronto on July 1, 2019, Ceci played the first six seasons of his NHL career for the Senators, with whom his teammates included current Oilers forward Kyle Turris. Ceci and Turris played five seasons together in Ottawa.
  • Koekkoek, who first joined the Oilers on a one-year deal last season, played with Keith for parts of two seasons in Chicago, 2018-19 and 2019-20. The two played pivotal roles In Chicago’s upset win over the Oilers in the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs Qualifying Round, with Keith tied for the team lead in assists (four in four games) and Koekkoek tied for the best plus/minus (plus-4),
  • Another former Blackhawk, Perlini, was a teammate of Keith and Koekkoek in Chicago… Perlini also played with Smith on the Arizona Coyotes in his rookie season, 2016-17… Dave Tippett, who in Arizona was Perlini’s first NHL head coach.

BLH’s Thoughts: What a small world the NHL is… Now, the tighter a group of hockey players are, the more likely they’ll be to go to war for each other assuming they were on good terms during their previous campaigns together.

Edmonton Oilers: Is it time to worry about Kailer Yamamoto?
  • In 52 games this past season, Yamamoto was able to score just eight goals and 21 points and was a non-factor on too many nights for a player the Oilers were counting on to be a reliable top-six forward.
  • Most seem to agree that giving Yamamoto a long-term deal at this point would be a big risk.
  • …the vast majority seem to be hoping for a shorter-term deal, preferably two years with an average annual value of $2 million or slightly below.
  • This would also have the potential to become a bargain deal if he is able to get back to playing the way he did in 2019-20…
  • …the chatter surrounding this situation is bound to pick up more and more as we continue through the dog days of summer and get closer to training camp.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t think it’s time to worry about Killer. We’re going into year three with him on the big club now and we’ve seen both sides of the coin.

Now, my hope is that he’s gained a little bit of muscle weight and more strength in his lower body so that he’s more equipped to handle his style of play and to mitigate any injury risks or concerns. He’s already quick, he just needs a bit of armor on that frame I feel. If Yamamoto does that, we should see the true version of what he’s going to be going forward.
