NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Pierre LeBrun (TSN): reports that the Seattle Kraken are probably keeping their eyes on Florida Panthers goaltende Chris Driedger as he’ll likely be an expansion draft casualty.
    • When Claude Julien was hired by the Montreal Canadiens, it was believed by many that Gerard Gallant was the backup option on GM Marc Bergeving’s list.
  • Mike Johnston (TSN): Says that this will be Montreal Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin’s last coaching hire. The next firing will be his own and he’s certainly aware of that.
  • Darren Dreger (TSN): There was a rumor of a Jonathan Quick Trade going around recently, but the Los Angeles Kings quickly denied it.
    • The Pittsburgh Penguins were in the market for a goaltender a few weeks ago, but things are unclear on that front at this point.
    • John Tortorella is the next head coach that could be on the hot seat.
    • Nothing new on the status of Chicago Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews as of late.
  • Thomas Drance (The Athletic): Prior to Elias Pettersson switching agents and joining Quinn Hughes at CAA, negotiations had been virtually nonexistent between the Vancouver Canucks and their two franchise players.
  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Buffalo has made defenseman Brandon Montour available. He will be a UFA this summer.
    • There were reports out of Russia last week that the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings were chasing Damir Zhafyarov, but they’re not the only teams according to Friedman.
    • Chances of the NHL entry draft being delayed took a turn for the worse last week. The biggest issues were rights retention, service years for arbitration/free agency, unsigned players drafted from CHL re-entering in two years, etc.
    • The Arizona Coyotes have considered dealing for Vancouver Canucks winger Tanner Pearson if he becomes available, but there’s no indication that he is or will become available. Vancouver hasn’t put him on the trade block but if he does head there he’ll be a priority for Arizona.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Nick Kypreos: Said on his podcast that the Ottawa Senators are shopping Derek Stepan already.
    • “They’re trying to trade Stepan right now. You barely got him and now you’re hearing that they’re trying to move him out? C’mon! What’s going on there?”
  • Doug MacLean: On the same podcast with Kypreos, said Stepan and Sens head coach DJ Smith don’t like each other. The former NHL coach and GM also wondered if having his young family back home in Arizona is having a negative effect on his game.
    • “The question is: Is (Stepan) pushing that?,” MacLean told Kypreos. “His family is in Arizona, he’s got three young kids, a newborn, quarantine issues with visiting … maybe it’s just too much.”

(Head to the 25:35 mark of this video below to hear the Stepan talk)

  • Shug McSween (nhltraderumors.me): Is of the belief that the Buffalo Sabres are shopping struggling winger Jeff Skinner. According to a league executive, they very well could be.
    • “I think Buffalo’s been making some phone calls to see what the interest levels are like. They’ll continue to point out he scored 40 goals two years ago, but there’s certainly a tremendous amount of risk involved with six more years on his contract. There’s a $7.5 million signing bonus he’s due in 2022. You can bet your bottom dollar the Sabres will try and move him before that kicks in.”
  • Peter Baugh (The Athletic): Says the Colorado Avalanche may ask defenseman Erik Johnson to waive his NMC so they don’t have to protect him for the expansion draft.
    • “He has a no-movement clause in his contract and must be protected in the expansion draft. But at 32 years old and on a $6 million AAV contract through 2022-2023, he’s not a likely target for Seattle, and he could choose to waive his no-movement clause, which would allow the Avalanche to protect another defenseman. If he does, then Devon Toews would make sense to protect in his place, considering how well he’s played on the top pairing with Makar.”
  • Emily Kaplan/Greg Wyshynski (ESPN): Speculated on a number of players who they thought could be traded this season recently,
    • “Now there is a player on a Canadian team that I could see moving and that is Travis Dermott. He’s on the Toronto Maple Leafs. They’ve got a logjam on D. He’s on very cheap contract and if looking for a landing spot for him, I’m circling the Pittsburgh Penguins.”
    • “Another team I would watch in the Columbus Blue Jackets again. They’ve got two very good goalies, which GM Jarmo Kekalainen knows is a luxury, and that’s Elvis Merzlikins and Joonas Korpisalo. Their contracts is both up in two years. I would be surprised if both of them are on the team until then.”
    • “Winger Kyle Palmieri who I think has a ton of value on the trade market. He’s 29, has an eight-team no-trade clause in his contract. Also, winger Nikita Gusev has an eight-team no-trade clause, he’s 28, explosive offensive winger. And then an old dog in center Travis Zajac.”
    • ” Defenseman Alex Goligoski, 35-years old, eight-team no-trade clause. Name has been on the trade market for a while, one to watch definitely, and then Niklas Hjalmarsson, same deal.”

(1/29/2021) – BLH’s NHL Rumors: “Imagine if those names were in play at some point in the future?”

BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring Sidney Crosby (PIT), Travis Dermott (TOR), Peter Chiarelli, Taylor Hall (BUF), Bobby Ryan (DET), and more!

The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defense and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?

TSN’s Frank Seravalli says that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins might not be in the Oilers’ plans going forward. Read all about it right here.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Says the Vancouver Canucks are looking for help on the blueline and Victor Mete (MTL), Vince Dunn (STL), and Travis Dermott (TOR) may be available.

BLH’s Thoughts: Will any of those players move the needle in Vancouver aside from Dunn maybe?

  • Pierre LeBrun (TSN): Says as many as 20 candidates have reached out to the Pittsburgh Penguins to let them know of their interest in the GM’s position including Peter Chiarelli, Mike Futa, Mike Gillis, Chris Drury, Ron Hextall, Mark Hunter, etc.

BLH’s Thoughts: Please be Chiarelli!

  • Darren Dreger (TSN): Wonders if the Pens miss the playoffs again or get knocked out early, could there be potential for a gargantuan change in philosophy that includes moving their big boys out. He says the club owes it to Sid Crosby, Gino Malkin, and Kris Letang to have a sit-down and discuss the direction of the club and if they would prefer to chase a championship elsewhere.
    • “Imagine if those names were in play at some point in the future?”

BLH’s Thoughts: If Pittsburgh or their stars wait too long to transition they’ll miss their window to help each other out. Their new GM is going to have his work cut out for him and I’m here for all of it if they decide to go full rebuild.

  • Jim Thomas (St. Louis Post Dispatch): Says the Blues will be looking for a draft pick in return for Vince Dunn and that when Vlad Tarasenko returns there’s going to be a salary cap challenge to deal with.
    • “If they trade Dunn — or someone else — they won’t be wanting an active NHL player back. (Unless it’s part of some bigger, more complex deal.)”

BLH’s Thoughts: Can’t see Edmonton being in on Dunn if the price is a draft pick. They’re already down a 2nd rounder and I don’t believe Holland will deal their first round selection unless a player of real quality is going to Edmonton.

  • Joe Haggerty (Boston Hockey Now): Says trading Anders Bjork makes a lot of sense for the Boston Bruins given the return of David Pastrnak is going to give the club more forwards than required.
    • “It obviously wouldn’t happen until the Bruins get David Pastrnak back this weekend and it may be pushed back a bit with the current injuries to wingers Jake DeBrusk and Ondrej Kase. But once the Boston Bruins have a full, healthy complement of forwards, they are going to have too many players for not enough spots in the everyday lineup.”

BLH’s Thoughts: With Edmonton’s PK shitting the bed like it is, I wonder if that Bjork-for-Chiasson deal doesn’t spark up again. The Boston winger is assertive, big-bodied, and quick. An upgrade on JJ Khaira, if anything.

  • The Hockey News: Ken Campbell, Matt Larkin, and Ryan Kennedy got together for a roundtable recently and were asked who they thought hockey fans should keep an eye on trade-wise.
    • Campbell – Bobby Ryan
    • Larkin – Taylor Hall
    • Kennedy – Darcy Kuemper and Clayton Keller

BLH’s Thoughts: Kuemper isn’t off to the hottest of starts this year but I’d be willing to bet that the Oilers make a call on him once Mike Smith is back and playing again. Might that be too late by then though? Bobby Ryan is a player I’ve always liked. He had a really nice run a few seasons ago with Ottawa and given his cheap contract, I’d probably prefer him to Tyler Ennis right now.

(1/24/2021) – BLH’s NHL Rumors: “It’s likely the package is centered around defenseman…”

BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring Tony DeAngelo (NYR), Phillip Danault (MTL), Jason Demers (ARI), Nicholas Hague (VGK), and more!

The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defense and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Dan Kingerski (Pittsburgh Hockey Now): Pittsburgh had scouts watching the Pens/Rangers game last night. In addition to them, the Panthers Sr. Advisor, Red Wings AGM (for the 2nd consecutive game), and members of the Ducks, Golden Knights, Wild, and Kraken were all in attendance.
    • Kingerski also speculates that the Penguins are after a LHD and offered up five trade candidates for the club including Nic Hague (VGK), Carson Soucy (MIN), Danny DeKeyser, and more.
  • Chad DeDominicis (Die by the Blade): “While we’re talking trades it sounds like there has been some movement on the goalie front w/ the Sabres. Nothing is done and I wouldn’t say imminent either but they’ve made some progress on a goalie out west. It’s a complicated deal if it gets done. We’ll see what happens.
  • Shug McSween (NHLtraderumors.me): Talked to one NHL executive before Pierre-Luc Dubois was traded and asked what the Anaheim Ducks would’ve been willing to offer,
    • “It’s likely the package is centered around defenseman, Hampus Lindholm, or forward Rickard Rackell. The Ducks will do whatever they can to keep top prospect Trevor Zegras. Recent first-rounder Jamie Drysdale will likely be involved, along with one of young forwards Max Jones, Maxime Comtois, or Sam Steel. Money is a factor here so this could turn into a 4-for-2 type of deal. Add in at least one first-rounder and the package will be huge.”
    • McSween also speculated on what the Montreal Canadiens would’ve had to have moved to get PLD, “The package would likely include Jesperi Kotkaniemi, Danault, Ryan Poehling, and at least one draft pick.”
  • La Presse: Is reporting that Canadiens center Phillip Danault turned down a 6-year deal worth $5M per season back in September. There’s some speculation as to why he didn’t sign being linked with an issue with salary in total.
    • “The gap would not be that large between the two parties, although there seem to be some nuances to be clarified on the duration of the contract. Some speak of a five-year deal, others of six seasons.” (source)
  • Anthony Di Marco (The Fourth Period): Says the mandate in Arizona is to rebuild (again) and notes that since Oliver Ekman-Larsson is allegedly off the market, a number of Coyotes d-men have re-emerged on it.
    • “The most recent Coyotes name to reemerge in the rumor mill is Jason Demers… Demers’ game has been on the decline for the last season or so; retaining salary may have to be entertained by Armstrong to garner full value for this particular asset.”
    • “Niklas Hjalmarsson’s name surfaced again this off-season, but he owns a full no-movement clause and was not willing to waive it… Hjalmarsson will likely fetch Armstrong the best return of pending free agent Arizona has, providing he’s willing to waive his NMC around the deadline.”
    • “It is believed that 35-year-old defenseman Alex Goligoski could also be on the move this season. He is set to become a UFA after this season and carries an AAV of $5.75 million”
  • Rob Ellis (NHLTradeRumor.com): Believes the marriage between Tony DeAngelo and the New York Rangers is coming to an end…
    • “It was reported with the Rangers trading up in the NHL draft to pick defenceman Braden Schneider is further indication the Rangers do not envision a long-term relationship with DeAngelo… As the season goes on, teams that are making a playoff push and that need an offensive puck-moving defenceman will likely call the Rangers on his availability.”

(1/20/2021) – BLH’s NHL Rumors: “I can’t imagine that Stan Bowman hasn’t made calls to…”

BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring the likes of Pierre-Luc Dubois (CBJ), Keith Yandle (FLA), Patrik Laine (WPG), Patrick Kane (CHI), the Edmonton Oilers, and more!

The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defense and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Bruce Garrioch (Ottawa Sun): Says the Blue Jackets aren’t alone in their pursuit of Winnipeg Jets winger Patrik Laine,
    • “The Jackets aren’t alone. You can include the Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks as teams that would be interested in Laine. People have talked about the Carolina Hurricanes having interest, but that makes zero sense because they wouldn’t want to shell out that kind of cash.”
  • Danny Silver (NHLTradeRumors.me): Says that the Arizona Coyotes could be after Florida Panthers d-man Keith Yandle,
    • Shane Doan has just made his return to the Coyotes organization. Although he is in an advisory role, his voice could be persuasive in obtaining his former teammate. The Coyotes aren’t a terrible hockey team, but they surely aren’t a good hockey team. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been placed on LTIR and perhaps acquiring Yandle will be their only hope at salvaging the gaping hole on the blue line.”
  • Mark Easson (NHLRumors.com): Suggests the Florida Panthers could be in for some big changes this summer,
    • “With so much speculation already bubbling over two of the panthers’ Veterans before their season began, one wonders what changes could be in store if this season ends in disappointment like all the others. Aging, expensive players like Keith Yandle could be traded or bought out. Perhaps the core gets shaken up by moving Jonathan Huberdeau, Alexander Barkov, or defenseman Aaron Ekblad.”
  • Adam Gretz (NBC): Had some harsh words for the Edmonton Oilers after reviewing their early-season woes,
    • “When they have an MVP on the ice they look like a potential playoff team. Without either, they look like an expansion team.”
  • Darren Dreger (TSN): Recently speculated on if the Chicago Blackhawks need to go full rebuild and two names they could go after,
    • “But with some of the names that are kind of floating around like Pierre-Luc Dubois as an example with the Columbus Blue Jackets, I can’t imagine that Stan Bowman hasn’t made calls to Columbus. You know, trying to figure that out.”
    • “A younger piece, maybe Laine comes into the discussion. I don’t know. It’s just wondering whether or not Chicago has the future assets to make a deal like that happen.”
  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): On if the Chicago Blackhawks would move star forward Patrick Kane,
    • “I mean, look, the way I always look at it is this, what situation do you see him getting traded? Do you see the Chicago Blackhawks going to Patrick Kane? The one thing you have to look at here is, when this is over, you have to sell tickets and all these teams are going to be trying to make money. In a gate driven league after fans have been out of games for a year and a half, what do you think gives the Blackhawks a better chance to sell tickets – Patrick Kane or no Patrick Kane?”
    • More on Pierre-Luc Dubois from Friedman, “Teams we haven’t thought about like “A Tampa Bay or Colorado,” may have sniffed around. The Canadiens, Flames, Rangers, and Hurricanes are the usual “suspects” around this situation too.”
  • TSN Radio: If the Ottawa Senators were to trade for PLD, there’s a good chance that young defenseman Erik Brannstrom would go to Columbus.
