Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Searching for Goaltending Magic (or Just Anything Decent)

In their seemingly never-ending quest for a goalie who can stop a puck, the Edmonton Oilers have cast a hopeful eye on not one, not two, but all three of the Montreal Canadiens’ netminders, according to the ever-optimistic Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet.

“A number of teams who were in Montreal said that Edmonton was there looking at all three of Montreal’s goaltenders. I don’t believe there’s anything imminent there, I just think it’s the Oilers continuing to do their due diligence.”

But hey, hold your horses, Oilers fans! Don’t get too excited about a potential deal. Friedman warns that the Oilers are trying really hard not to make a trade they’ll regret. Because, you know, their track record with goalies is just stellar.

“(Edmonton) is determined not to make a panic trade that they’ll regret, but there’s no question that with every loss — like the one they had this afternoon — the focus continues more on them,”

The Oilers’ goaltending has been about as reliable as a chocolate teapot, contributing generously to their stellar 5-10-1 start this season. Stuart Skinner and Jack Campbell have been putting on a goaltending clinic with a combined save percentage that would make a sieve blush.

In a bold move, Campbell was shipped off to the AHL, and in his place, the Oilers summoned Calvin Pickard from the depths of the hockey underworld. Yet, Pickard is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine, having not made a single appearance in an NHL game this season.

Now, let’s talk about the Canadiens, a team so generous they have not one, not two, but three goalies to spare! Jake Allen, Sam Montembeault, and Cayden Primeau are all up for grabs. Sure, they’re stuck in rebuild mode, but who needs a decent goalie when you can have three average ones, right?

Let’s break down the stats, because who doesn’t love numbers? Allen and Montembeault are posting numbers that make you think they actually know how to stop a puck. Meanwhile, Primeau is the rookie of the trio, with stats that make you question if he’s ever seen a puck before.

(As of Saturday, all statistics provided, including GSAx (goals saved above expected), are courtesy of Evolving-Hockey.)

GOALIE GP GAA SV% GSAX
Allen 7 3.30 .911 4.64
Montembeault 8 2.78 .908 4.48
Primeau 3 3.97 .885 0.98

Oh, and let’s not forget the thrilling salary cap dance the Oilers would have to perform. Allen is the high roller at $3.85 million, meaning the Oilers might need to pawn a few sticks to afford him. Montembeault and Primeau are more budget-friendly, but knowing the Oilers, they’ll find a way to make it complicated.

GOALIE AGE CAP HIT YEARS LEFT EXPIRY STATUS
Allen 33 $3.85M 2 UFA
Montembeault 27 $1M 1 UFA
Primeau 24 $890K 2 RFA

So, Oilers faithful, buckle up for another thrilling goalie saga, as your team dives into the deep, murky waters of the goalie market. Will they find a gem, or will they end up with another goalie who thinks the puck is more of a suggestion than a rule? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for the next episode of “Oilers Goaltending Chronicles: The Never-Ending Quest.”

2020-21 Edmonton Oilers GM55: Oilers vs. Canadiens – Three Players to Watch

Even the the Montreal Canadiens were missing more than a handful of their best players on Monday, they gave Edmonton a real run but in the end they couldn’t stop the Mega Powers (McDavid and Draisaitl). I hate to say it but the Oilers were a bit lucky to come away with the points in that one.

Then again, the Habs have played them really well all year and I don’t expect tonight’s game to be any different.

Should they be in the lineup, here are three players that I think you should keep an eye on for the Canadiens tonight,

  • #22 Cole Caufield – IOn Monday, It felt like it was only a matter of time until he scored but it simply wasn’t to be. He’s outstanding at finding the soft ice and his release is magical. Man! Can he get that puck off in a jiffy.
  • #71 Jake Evans – Two nights ago, I really liked how effective he was on a line with Lehkonen and Byron. They really put the Oilers in a tough situation each time they hit the ice. Their speed and grit gave Edmonton fits.
  • #26 Jeff Petry – Was hammering Oilers left and right the other night. Was he this good during his days in Edmonton?

With regards to Edmonton, I’ll be watching these three individuals closely,

  • #18 James Neal – The Real Deal looks all healed up eh? He’s been skating really well with Ryan McLeod (congrats to him on his first NHL point) and Alex Chiasson. Those two really do their damnedest to get him the puck for a shot and he’s got a weird ability to be able to get a shot on net in the most awkward ways. Where ever the puck is sitting, he finds a way to get it on the net.
  • #56 Kailer Yamamoto – The chances are coming and that’s important. It looks like he’s starting to get fed up with this goal drought and becoming a little bit greedier in the offensive zone. I like that. Hopefully he can pot one or two before the season is out and go into the post-season with a bit of momentum.
  • #22 Tyson Barrie – He’s got two more games to get four points and hit that magical 50pt mark. All the other contenders for highest scoring defensemen have had their seasons come to an end aside from John Carlson in Washington as the Caps have one more game left. All Barrie has to do is get two more tallies and he’ll take over the scoring lead amongst defensemen.

2020-21 Edmonton Oilers GM54: Oilers vs. Canadiens – Three Players to Watch

The Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers are in precarious positions as the two teams embark on a pair of games this week. If the Oilers lose, it would crack the door open a little more on their cross-provincial rivals’ playoff hopes and it would also allow the Habs to surpass the Winnipeg Jets thus potentially setting the stage for a Canadiens/Oilers first-round playoff match-up.

Personally, I don’t think any team in the North scares Edmonton but seeing as Montreal played the Oilers quite well in the regular season, I could understand if there was some extra motivation to hammer on the Canadiens tonight and on Wednesday.

My feeling is that anybody not playing the Maple Leafs would like to see them involved in a very physical first-round series in the hopes that they’d head into the second round (if they got there) beat up a bit.

It’s going to take 16 wins for the Edmonton Oilers to bring home Stanley Cup #6! Grab a shirt to celebrate the occasion!

Should they be in the lineup, here are three players that I think you should keep an eye on for the Canadiens tonight,

  • #73 Tyler Toffoli – What a year it’s been for TT! At the moment though, the Canadiens have two players who are scoring for the team, one of them is Toffoli and the other is the next fella on this list. It’s always good to go with the hot hand when picking players to watch and Toffoli has five points in his last five games.
  • #14 Nick Suzuki – Montreal has had five different goal scorers in their last five games (Suzuki, Toffoli, Lehkonen, Edmundson, and Kulak) for a total of six goals… Young Suzuki also had five points in that time frame.
  • #8 Ben Chiarot – Chiarot has had a fine season. When he was with the Jets I didn’t give him much thought but he’s been a rock for the Habs and if Shea Weber is going to be out of the lineup for any decent length of time, they’re going to need Chiarot to step his game up.

With regards to Edmonton, I’ll be watching these three individuals closely,

  • #13 Jesse Puljujarvi – My boy has nine points in his last ten games and is coming on strong at the perfect time for the Oilers. To date, he’s been used as a battering ram and a disruptor but now he’s finding the soft ice and his offense is starting to shine.
  • #70 Ryan McLeod – He’s stepped right in without skipping a beat. His confidence shines strongly and that is seen when he carries the puck through the neutral zone like a seasoned veteran. I’m hoping he scores his first NHL goal tonight.
  • #29 Leon Draisaitl – Has six goals in his last three games and is aiming to rack up point #80.

Oilers News and Notes

According to Elliotte Friedman, the Oilers and Adam Larsson are closing in on a 4yr deal. Kurt Leavins noted that he thinks the salary could come in above $3.5M but lower than $4M per year.

I like the sounds of this contract. It will take him to the age of 32 and also provide the Oilers with a defensive stalwart just as the club is entering its Stanley Cup contending years.

The other thing that bringing Larsson back for another four seasons will do is give them a right-shot defender who can move up and down the lineup, as needed and seeing how Ethan Bear is ready to take the next step and Evan Bouchard has already developed into a bottom-four defender, Edmonton would have something very rare, three righties on the blueline who the coach can deploy where ever he wants and whenever he wants.

I’ve got a question for you, who is the comeback player of the year for the Oilers, Jesse Puljujarvi or Mike Smith?

2020-21 Edmonton Oilers GM45: Oilers vs. Canadiens – Three Players to Watch

I’ll be honest, it’s going to be very difficult for the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens to replicate the entertainment value I got from their last meeting. That as the game of the year so far and it was perfectly accented by the play-by-play of Jack Michaels. That said, I hope to the high heavens that we get to see another beauty!

Click the pic and find the NHL94 player from your team!

Should they be in the lineup, here are three players that I think you should keep an eye on for the Habs tonight,

  • #34 Jake Allen – He’ll need to have a really solid bounce back performance tonight after being the latest victim of a Connor McDavid Supernova event. If he doesn’t stand on his head, I can’t see Montreal having much of a chance tonight.
  • #24 Philip Danault – One could say that his abrasive treatment of the Oilers captain might’ve lead to McDavid changing gears from rabbit to Lamborghini two nights ago. Might we see a more responsible style of play this evening?
  • #94 Corey Perry – If there’s one guy that will do anything to get his team a goal, it’s Perry. So it wouldn’t shock me in the least if he gets away with something criminal that leads to a Canadiens’ goal.

For Montreal to have success, they need to get their scorers scoring. They’re in one helluva mire right now and I’m not sure they’ve got the soldiers willing to do what it takes to get out of this slump. However, they do have some highly-skilled forwards who are quick and can find the soft ice. So, if they were to start pounding that puck on net and looking for redirections and rebounds, that would be a good place to start IF they can maintain puck possession in the Oilers’ zone.

With regards to Edmonton, I’ll be watching these three individuals closely,

  • #93 Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – Ryan Rishaug is reporting there’s a good chance Nuge will be in the lineup. Edmonton’s PP has looked a little bit disconnected with him sitting in the press box recovering from his alleged concussion.
  • #44 Zack Kassian – Somebody poked the wolverine two nights ago and we were witness to a transformation of sorts for Kassian. His Bruce Banner persona gone and in his place an enraged Incredible Hulk. I want know which personality we’ll see in a matter of hours though and was that a one off?
  • #22 Tyson Barrie/#75 Evan Bouchard – He didn’t skate in this morning’s optional practice, so I wonder if he might be out this evening and could we see Evan Bouchard get a game now that Ethan Bear is back to his old self.

Three Keys to Success For the Oilers

  • Keep the Streaks Alive!

Connor McDavid, Jesse Puljujarvi, and Kailer Yamamoto each have two game point streaks going into this one. McDavid has five points, Puljujarvi has three, and Yamo has two ticks on the scoresheet in their last pair of games.

  • Clamp it Down in the First and Second.

Montreal is going to come out hard I think. They’ve outscored their opponents in each of the first two frames this season but their third periods have been their Achilles’ heel, if you will. Conversely, the Oilers have loved scoring in the final period this year outscoring their counterparts 50-39.

  • Stay Out of the Box

Edmonton’s PK at home is 24th in the league (75%)… They might want to tidy that up a bit but with RNH possibly returning tonight, he would be a serious help there.

2020-21 Edmonton Oilers GM44: Oilers vs. Canadiens – Three Players to Watch

The Edmonton Oilers are in Montreal for a couple of games in an attempt to leapfrog the Winnipeg Jets and catch a slumping Toronto Maple Leafs club who surely will be low on morale after losing to the near-crippled Vancouver Canucks last night…

The Canadiens have not fared any better as of late and are 2-3-0 in their last five and 4-6-0 in their last ten games played. Conversely, the Oilers are coming in like Clark Griswold’s greased up SR775CV Racer. 3-1-1 in their last five and in their last ten, 6-2-2.

Click the pic and find the NHL94 player from your team!

Should they be in the lineup, here are three players that I think you should keep an eye on for the Habs tonight,

  • #73 Tyler Toffoli – He leads Montreal in scoring this year with 21 goals and 11 assists but only has two helpers in his four games against Edmonton.
  • #26 Jeff Petry – The former Edmonton Oiler has four points this season when facing his old club and he’s due for another as he’s not scored in at least Montreal’s last ten but he has 26 shots in that time…
  • #17 Josh Anderson – What a handful he was the last time these two teams got together. He gave Caleb Jones and Ethan Bear a really hard time and I don’t imagine that’ll be stopping tonight with his speed, massive frame, and abrasive playing style.

For Montreal to have success, I think they should do their best to pressure Edmonton’s defense as much as possible in order to create some chaos in the offensive zone. The Canadiens have some very quick and physical bottom sixers who can do just that in Lehkonen and Paul Byron and then they have really good veterans like Eric Staal and Corey Perry who can work the boards and play in the muck leaving the likes of Tatar or Danault to finish.

With regards to Edmonton, I’ll be watching these three individuals closely,

  • #29 Leon Draisaitl – One of a handful of Oilers who are -5 on the season vs. Montreal, he has seven points in his last five games but he hasn’t scored a goal against the Canadiens despite throwing 15 shots on net against them this year.
  • #14 Devin Shore – Is one of the leading scorers for the Oilers when they play the Dominic Ducharme’s with a brain-blistering TWO points! All facetiousness aside, this player has been a good signing for Edmonton this year and I think we should nickname him The Ultimate Shorrior! I don’t know why, it just sounds good.
  • #97 Connor McDavid – One would think that choosing the highest-scoring player in the NHL right now (71pts) would be kind of a lay up for a player to watch but this young man has not scored a single goal against Montreal this year… I’m picking tonight for that little drought to… Dry up.

Three Keys to Success For the Oilers

  • Score First

The Montreal Canadiens have a record of 2-11-5 when their opponents have scored first. Logically, that tells me that if the Oilers strike early, they should have a higher chance of taking home the two points.

  • Boss the Special Teams

Montreal has horrendous special teams for the amount of NHL depth they possess. Their powerplay is 21st in the league and their penalty kill is 22nd. That being said, Edmonton has to be very careful if they get the mad advantage as the Habs are tied for first in the NHL for shorthanded goals with eight.

  • Shut Down Tatarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Tomas Tatar has four goals against Edmonton this season to lead his team. No other player has more than two.

Oh. And remember that name in the off-season Oilers fans. We might be seeing a bit more of him… Tomasssssss Tatarrrrrrrr!
