Edmonton Oilers Talk: Craig Button on Holloway, Savoie, and Who To Watch Out For at the 2021 WJHCs

Last Friday, TSN’s Craig Button was on TSN 1260 radio in Edmonton, and hosts Jason Gregor and Jason Strudwick asked him a plethora of questions on topics ranging from Carter Savoie’s white-hot start to his NCAA career, what he expects Dylan Holloway to bring to Team Canada at the 2021 World Juniors, as well as who should we be keeping an eye out for at the annual Xmas tournament.

I know that everyone digests their media the best in different manners, so I’d like to give you his quotes via this platform.

What Role Does Button See Dylan Holloway In?

It’ll be important, it doesn’t matter where he plays. He’s going to have an important part of the team and be an important contributor.

Dylan has a lot of skill and he has a lot of power and I see players with power that want to be a skill guy and other players that have a lot of skill and they want to try and be a power player. I think he blends both of things together seamlessly. He can use his skill, he’s a powerful skater, he’s really quick and agile; and then once he uses that skill, because he’s thick and he’s strong and he’s assertive, it’s really hard to knock him away and knock awry from where he wants to go. He’s good on the boards, he’s good in the open ice, he’s good on the forecheck, he’ll get his chances and he can shoot the puck.

The thing I love most about Dylan is that he’s not interested in just going out there and having time go off the clock. He wants to go out there and make a difference

Could we be seeing the emergence of a more talented version of Shawn Horcoff in the making here? Horcs had one really good season statistically, but for me at least, I saw him as a workhorse that did what was necessary to get the job done. He was also a tremendous leader for those Oilers teams that he captained.

Who to Keep an Eye On At the 2021 World Juniors?

Sweden’s blueline is really good lead by Broberg, Bjornfot, Viktor Soderstrom. They were key players when the Swedish team won the u18. They can skate, they’ve got size, and they’re going to really be able to push it.

Lucas Raymond and Alexander Holtz, the 4th and 7th overall picks in the NHL draft. They’re big time and they had their debut as 16yr olds at the Hlinka-Gretzky in Edmonton playing as underage players at that tournament. They are both gifted offensively and this will be their 2nd World Junior and they’re going to be really good.

You come across now to the US team. Matt Beniers is going to be a top pick in the draft and he may very well be a front-line player, he may be more of a front-line player and ahead of Alex Turcotte with respect to his impact. And it’s not that Alex isn’t good, Alex is really good, but that tells you how good Beniers is. He very easily could be a top-5, top-3 pick and Turcotte went 5th.

Cole Caufield has been outstanding in college hockey. Matt Boldy‘s been outstanding over at Boston College. That’s a line that they’ve had playing together they’re going to be really really formidable.

The Russians, we know about the goaltender. Do I have to talk about the Hlinka-Gretzky again? That’s where Yaroslav Askarov as an underage had his debut and he’s been terrific in the KHL. He returns.

Podkolzin is going to be a factor.

But this Russian team, the blueline is outstanding. Daniil Chayka is going to be a first-round draft pick. (Shakha) Mukhamadullin is a first-round draft pick to New Jersey. (Yan) Kuznetsov to the Calgary Flames. Mukhamadullin and Chayka are playing regular roles in the KHL. They can skate, they can move, and you’re looking at really good players.

Yan Kuznetsov, Edmonton Oilers fans aren’t going to want to hear this but, he’s another big strong Robyn Reghr-type of defenseman. He might not be as good as Robyn so I’ll call him a lower case Robyn Regehr, but he’s that type of defenseman.

The Russians are going to have scoring, they’re going to have a great blue line and they’ve got an awesome goaltender.

I’d add the following players should be ones to keep an eye on as well, Anton Lundell (FIN), Tim Stutzle (GER), Juraj Slafkovsky (SVK), Marco Rossi (AUS), Simon Knak (SUI), Jan Mysak and Stanislav Svozil (CZE), Jesper Wallstedt (SWE), Marat Khusnutdinov and Semyon Chistyakov (RUS), Spencer Knight and Brendan Brisson (USA), and finally Jack Quinn and Quinton Byfield (CAN).

The tournament should be really good this year! My feeling is that it’s going to be a three-horse race between the Canadians, Americans, and Russians for Gold. But, that being said, with 2020 being as messed up as it’s been, I would not be surprised one bit if a team like the Swedes or Czechs caught fire and upset everyone.

Realistically though, it really is Canada’s gold medal to lose. I just hope all those days in quarantine haven’t had too much of an impact on the players.

Is it too much to ask for a Russia/Canada final?

Button’s Initial Thoughts on Carter Savoie’s Hot Start

I thought he was one of the best goal-scorers in the draft. What I was surprised about was that he was around in the 4th round.

Goal-scoring is such a valuable commodity. To me, I’m going to look at a player like Carter Savoie at every turn. I think he got unfairly maligned and people stopped looking at what he does really well and that’s what he’s doing at Denver.

Will Savoie Leave College in Two Years or Three?

I think he’s a terrific goal-scorer, but I would say, let’s see where he’s at after two years. Let’s see where his development is at and then go from there.

You’re looking now at a player that’s a niche and will have every opportunity if he continues playing at the level that he is and I think he’s capable of playing at. I mean, he very well could be at the World Junior tournament in Edmonton which will be another step for his development.

After two years, where’s he at physically? Where’s he at in his game? Has he dominated? I’m a big believer, don’t leave school until you’ve really mastered that level of play. If he’s there in two years, then you can have that discussion.

What Does He Have to Work On?

There’s two things that I think Carter (has to work on). Number one, when you’re such a prolific scorer coming up through all of the age groups and everything, you know that there is a lot of forgiveness with respect to ‘you know if I don’t score this shift or I’m gonna get the puck again. I’m not too worried about it’. Just that consistent focus and intensity and being a dangerous player shift-to-shift-to-shift.

The other thing, he’s learning that at the college level the players are bigger, they’re stronger, it’s a little bit harder to get where he needs to get to. So just understanding, don’t get yourself unnecessarily tied up, make sure that you understand where you’re going on the ice, and don’t get yourself contained unnecessarily. As a goal-scorer, you want to be open and you want to be free to get the puck and get onto rebounds.

Some have been comparing Savoie to former AJHL, NCAA, and WHL standout Mike Comrie.

Now, I remember Comrie from his performances at the Viking Cup in my hometown WAY back in the day. I think the 1998 tourney when he starred for the AJHL All-Stars with Fernando Pisani. He was so far ahead of everyone from a scoring POV that every time he hit the ice he was producing scoring chances left and right.

Fun Fact: Current Oilers head coach Dave Tippet played in the very first Viking Cup back in ’81 for the Prince Albert Raiders of the SJHL. His team finished 2nd.

So if Savoie is Comrie v2.0, then the Oilers have a fabulously gifted player on their hands. I would caution young Carter to avoid the route Comrie took and that is to become a scrapper in the NHL’s lightweight division when the scoring slows down.

Edmonton Oilers: Strudwick and Button Compare Evan Bouchard to Griffin Reinhart

This just in! According to former Oilers defender Jason Strudwick and ex-Flames GM Craig Button, Evan Bouchard can now begin to be compared to failed 4th overall pick Griffin Reinhart… Wow! Just when you think Button couldn’t dig himself into that hole any further, Strudwick hands him a new shovel…

Forgive me, this post is going to be a bit jambled. I had a lot of quotes to use and had quite a bit to say but I’ll be honest, the organization of the post is f*cked… But it is what it is. I just want to get this out to the masses and you fine folks can do with it what you will.

No new trade rumors to report btw. Zuccarello is the reported target at the moment.

On to the ridiculousness!

Jason Strudwick: A guy like Griffin Reinhart. He could do it in junior but once you get to the NHL you have to have some snap. You gotta get there and get there quick. Griffin was never able to raise that. Is that kind of a fair comparison to maybe what a guy that was never able to get that bar up high enough to play at that quick tempo. It doesn’t mean you’re skating fast, it means you’re doing things quickly.

At first when I’d heard that there were Reinhart/Bouchard comparisons done on Jason Gregor’s show, I didn’t think it would’ve been coming out of Strudwick’s mouth.

Reinhart’s career best point total in junior was 36 points in 2011-12. Bouchard has already had an 87 point campaign and is on pace for 90 points this season… He also has an actual NHL goal to his name, something that the Reinhart boy has yet to achieve, but I digress.

Do you remember back in 2014, there were some rumblings that the Oilers should trade the 3rd overall pick for Griffin Reinhart? Jonathan Willis wrote on it at the time and what I was shocked to find out was that Craig Button was one of the pundits that was also advocating that trade.

Bob Stauffer had two guests on his show bring up the subject recently – TSN scout (and former NHL G.M.) Craig Button and the Edmonton Journal’s Jim Matheson. Terry Jones wrote about the possibility in the Edmonton Sun, and David Staples riffed on that in a follow-up piece on the Journal’s website.

The Oilers did eventually trade for Reinhart but if I had to choose between this proposed deal and the one that actually happened, I’ll take losing out on Barzal, Chabot, Boeser, etc. instead of Leon Draisaitl anyday.

Craig Button: Jason, it’s a perfect, perfect description and it’s a really good example about Griffin. Griffin was a smart player, and I love the term “snap”. You use a great phrase and one that I totally agree with, “getting there quickly”. Getting there quickly with the best opportunity to make the best play, not to make a survival play, not to make a play, “Oh boy! Now I’m stuck, I’m gonna fire it off the glass”,,, It’s about giving yourself the opportunity to make the best play. Like I said, the NHL is fast. It’s fast offensively, it’s fast defensively. It demands you not only play fast but you gotta think fast. It’s developmental, he (Bouchard) doesn’t have an inherant weakness in his hockey sense or an inherant weakness in his skating. He’s just got to play faster and get his pace up. That’s true of 99% of young players trying to enter the league. It’s not unique to Evan, it holds true to 99% of the players trying to get into the league

Griffin Reinhart couldn’t survive at the NHL level because he couldn’t skate at that level! He was being compared to Colton Teubert for crying out loud! As a result of his poor skating, of course his pace and tempo were affected. I mean who uses Griffin Reinhart as a comparable to Evan Bouchard?

I asked a veteran OHL scout about what Button’s comments and he had this to say,

Button is a f*cking moron. I honestly ignore everything he says. Bouchard plays with great pace and tempo. He also slows things down and can play a patient game. Defensive intensity is an issue. Just kinda floats defensively but transition game and offensive game are elite.

You can see he’s trying a bit harder defensively. Certainly whacking guys more, trying to pin guys up against the wall more. He needs to hit the gym to get bigger and stronger that will help him too. AHL is perfect for that.

His first step is a bit slow but once we gets going he’s fine. Part of it is reads too. When he gets the puck he’s immediately looking to make a pass with head up. I dunno, Button is f*cked.

Bottom line is, you can’t teach some of the sh*t he does with the puck offensively. That shot is so hard and accurate and he is a good skater despite what people think especially in transition game. IQ is very high, poise is there. He has a lot of tools just needs to continue to get stronger and work and efensive game. But what defensive prospect at age 19 doesn’t?

I really want to know how Button came to the conclusions about this list of 50 best-affiliated players and it was addressed in the show as well.

The list of the 50 best nhl affiliated players is about who today factors into that category of best players who are affiliated with their team. It’s not about potential, there’s another hundred players who have lots of potential, Evan Bouchard included amongst them.

You look at a player and you look at what players have to do, I like Evan Bouchard, I think he’s got lots of capability but I know one thing that’s essential to success at the National Hockey League level, and that’s a pace and tempo that Evan Bouchard has to improve. It has to be much better.

You evaluate over a period of time. This isn’t a static operation for me, it’s not an evaluation that I just look at him once. I’m looking at it over time and Evan’s a really good prospect but when I look at it and I do it, it’s not about points.

It’s about, okay, I’ve just watched him in a best-on-best tournament, I just watched him against his peer group as a 19-year-old defenseman and you factor that in. You factor in to what I’ve seen this year in London and so those all go in hand-in-hand in terms of the evaluation.

Ah… I think I’ve found the issue here. Button is upset about Bouchard’s performance at the World Juniors. It has to be. He’s based in Calgary for the most part and so I have to question how often he gets out to London Knights games.

I didn’t think Evan had a good tournament either but that didn’t force me to come to the conclusion that Gabe Vilardi, a player who hasn’t played a full season of hockey for 3 years now, is a better player for the Kings than Bouchard is for the Oilers.

A new season means a new design! Click the image above to get the new Pulju shirt!

This isn’t about him not being a good NHL prospect…. Connor Timmins, last year as a 19-year-old defenseman, had the same exact developmental issues as Evan Bouchard and at the World Junior tournament, and I don’t just put this at the World Junior Touranment, but make no mistake about it; it’s a significant tournament when we’re talking about the best players outside the NHL and Connor Timmins excelled, Evan Bouchard fell far short of excelling at that tournament and I still think he’s got great, awesome potential but he needs work on his pace and tempo because if it doesn’t improve, he’s going to have a tough time playing in the National Hockey League.

So Button goes on about Timmins here and how he had a good tourney and how Bouchard didn’t but Eeli Tolvanen was invisible for Finland for most of the tournament. Filip Zadina had 1 point the whole time!

But maybe we should use defensemen as a better comparable.

  • Quinn Hughes (USA) – 2 assists – ranked 8th
  • Evan Bouchard (CAN) – 3 assists – unranked
  • Noah Dobson (CAN) – 1 assist – ranked 18th

The person ranked 19th is Alexander Romanov. He has ZERO points for his KHL club but at least he lead the scoring at the world juniors for dmen.

I mean is Alexander Alexeyev really a better prospect for his club today than Bouchard is for Edmonton? C’mon Craig! Get your head out of your ass.

This is a report from Button that came out a few months before the draft in 2018 and he had some pretty glowing things to say about Evan Bouchard and had him ranked as high as 5th in the draft.

Funny, nothing about his lack of pace or tempo though…

Sometimes it takes me a little bit longer to get my senses about myself and my wits. I’ve watched Evan Bouchard for four years. The OHL Cup has been going on this weekend, I saw him first in midget. Three years in London, over 50 times in all different kinds of games, playoffs, events. I can only tell you this, after a while you just go, “Wait a second, he’s this good.” He’s not sexy. There’s not end-to-end rushes and flashes of brilliance but what there is is this great intelligence, this great ability to impact the game, great with the puck, and he reminds me of Hall-of-Famer Larry Murphy. I’m not saying he’s Larry Murphy but that’s the kind of game he plays. We’re talking about a guy that had 87 points, lead his team in scoring as a defenseman.Craig Button (3/20/2018)

Has anybody considered that perhaps the reason that Bouchard appears to play slower is that he’s trained himself to do that due to playing so many minutes for London the last couple of seasons?

A lot of talk about the Oilers and Milan Lucic tonight and rightfully so I imagine. The big $6M winger is having a poor back end to the season, no poorer than David Backes, Rick Nash, Brandon Saad, or Nick Foligno’s full year mind you but that’s beside the point for some Oilers fans.

Not a peep did we hear from this faction of the Oilers fanbase while Milan was playing well before Christmas. But since then I don’t know if I’ve heard one good thing said about Lucic from the folks who are feeling like this is “justified criticism”.

I will take this time to remind you to be careful about what you say online. You might believe that the players don’t read the socials or the blogs but you’re wrong. They do and the people around them do. These are humans and words affect them.

I mean this is a player on your favorite team (assumingly) and you want to talk trash about him? There’s a fine line that’s being walked when you take that route. And all of this for 3 months of slumping? Something tells me this kind of criticism has less to do with the player and more to do with the GM.

“Daddy, why won’t good players come play in Edmonton”

“Well son, it’s because there’s a portion of the fanbase that is a relentless tire fire if the team isn’t winning and even then you’re lucky to get a peep or positivity out of them. Oh and it’s cold in Edmonton and the team has to do a lot of traveling when they go out on the road compared to teams in the Eastern Conference.”

And one more thing, this is more specific to Lucic, take the time to think about what he’s gone through since choosing to come to the Oilers. Take the time to read about his father’s tragedy

Depression is no joke and about 40% of people who have it pass it down. The other 60% is dependent on other circumstances like the environment a person lives in and I can assure you the environment for a professional athlete can be a toxic one.

Lay off Lucic. He knows how his year has gone and you’re not being helpful or original for that matter by bringing it up constantly. Try being more helpful instead of kicking him when he’s down and putting your boots on his neck. Think about how you’d like to be treated if you were having a tough time doing the thing you loved.

OILERS NEWS

The Cult of Hockey – Craig Button blasts Edmonton Oilers for failure to properly develop Jesse Puljujarvi – This in from Craig Button, talking to Jason Gregor of TSN1260 radio about the Edmonton Oilers handling — or mishandling — of Jesse Puljujarvi.

The Cult of Hockey – It’s Worth it For the Edmonton Oilers Not to Tank, But There’s a High Price Attached – True fans want their team to win, but they also sometimes put on that general manager’s hat where they carefully assess the value of draft picks.

Oilersnation – The McBlender – I think most people who watch the Oilers this season have been frustrated or confused by the amount of line juggling we’ve seen from Head Coach Todd McLellan.

Lowetide – Union City Blue – As upset as one might be about last night’s game, and it was the 44th loss so you should be used to it by now, this club had their chances.

Beer League Heroes – It Was a Hockey Trade – In the end, though the simple fact was we needed a right-handed top pair defenceman very badly. The off-ice stuff might have made it easier to justify the supposed low return. Maybe other NHL GMs heard things from friends of friends of friends like we all have. Quite frankly it’s naive to think they didn’t. Even without the noise Hall wouldn’t fetch a Subban, Seth Jones, Karlsson, etc etc. That’s just dreaming.

Button’s and McKenzie’s Pre-Season 2018 Draft Rankings Released!

It’s the beginning of hockey season folks!!! Bob McKenzie and Craig Button have released their pre-season 2018 draft rankings and you can watch the videos below. In the past this has been a very important time of the year for Oilers fans but since we’ve drafted McDavid, the draft and its prospects have found themselves on the backburner a bit for some folks.

I admit last season, I couldn’t be bothered following it. There simply wasn’t the hype to be honest but this year’s crop of kids is going to be outstanding and even though the Oilers are expected to be picking 31st (hehe) in June, some players drop that shouldn’t (I’m talking to you Eeli Tolvanen and Timothy Liljegren) and some players rise.

My comments on the prospects, my own top ten, and the links to McKenzie’s and Button’s write-ups follow the videos below!

Let me know what you think about the rankings in the Youtube comments and please don’t forget to subscribe to our Channel!

Pick up this sweet tee and let the whole world know how much you love hockey’s favorite cheat!

I think that we’re getting two VERY special players in 2018/19 in Dahlin and Svechnikov. This 2000-born draft class is going to be hailed as one of the best ever in my opinion because the talent doesn’t drop off after the first two.

If you simply want to read the rankings, click on the two links below!

What you’ll find is a pretty even keel list with Bob McKenzie and then something almost the opposite with Craig Button. Button usually has some players ridiculously low because he’s projecting how they’ll be in 3-5 years I believe whereas McKenzie is ranking in the now.

McKenzie’s 2018 Pre-Season Draft Rankings

Button’s 2018 Pre-Season Craig’s List

My rankings go as such:

  1. Rasmus Dahlin – D
  2. Andrei Svechnikov – RW
  3. Brady Tkachuk – LW
  4. Rasmus Kupari – C
  5. Adam Boqvist – D
  6. Joe Veleno – C
  7. Quinn Hughes – D
  8. Ryan Merkley – D
  9. Bode Wilde – D
  10. Filip Zadina – C

I didn’t put too much into these rankings, just a bit of personal opinion and from what I’ve been gleaned upon by others in the know. I value right-handers quite a bit. I like high-end offensive dmen and skilled power forwards. I’m not a fan of players who don’t offer a bit of dynamicism or entertainment value be that highly skilled goals/passes or big time hits. Steady Eddies are good for your team but bore this shite out of me.

I’m a little disappointed that Tkachuk and Wilde aren’t playing in the CHL, as I’d love to have seen them up against it in Canada. Filip Zadina is going to be an interesting case this year as he’ll be playing with two other first round projected players in Jared McIsaac and Benoit-Olivier Groulx. Ryan Merkley getting comparisons to Ryan Murphy is a little disconcerting and Quinn Hughes will be one to watch at the World Juniors because if you like puck-rushing dmen, he’s your guy.

Boqvist will have to work on his shooting accoring to Steve Kournianos as The Draft Analyst said on a recent podcast that he wasn’t impressed with how many times Boqvist missed the net with his shot. Of course, McKenzie has Boqvist being compared to Erik Karlsson… So there’s that.

Lastly, Joe Veleno will be playing alongside Oilers prospect Ostap Safin and given what I saw during the prospects tourney and the rookie game vs. the NAIT/MacEwan All-Stars, I really have no idea how that is going to pan out. Safin is pretty laid back and Veleno is a game breaker for Saint John.

This video was done at the beginning of September, so the top ten here will be a tad different!
