  • Right now, I would estimate Tyler Benson and Josh Archibald as being less likely to make the team. More likely? Brendan Perlini, who one suspects is on his way to winning the job, and Colton Sceviour, who is the plug-and-play replacement for Josh Archibald.
  • Where does the Perlini spike put Benson? In a tough spot for sure, and he played well enough last night. Had a shot on goal that was a reasonable chance, cheated for defense a couple of times (appropriately) and forechecked well. He contributed on the PK, 1:42 total time ranking fourth among forwards.
  • Benson showed reasonably well against a Seattle Kraken team that might be monitoring the waiver wire in the days to come, an organization interesting in bringing in young players who might contribute to an expansion team in a variety of roles.

BLH’s Thoughts: I think that Tyler Benson saved his camp last night in the third period versus WPG. Xavier Bourgault and him were FLYING in the final frame and we finally caught a glimpse of what he could do.

Now, the question has to be asked, did he play well because of his individual talent or because he was put on a line with a fantastic offensive talent like “Go-Go” Bourgault?

Either way, it was a good performance and this weekend, the coaching staff will be looking for more of that. For his sake, I hope he brings more of it.

FWIW, Bourgault has not looked out of place so far. I wonder if the brass will keep him around and put him in the lineup when the opposition starts to ice their proposed regular season rosters so that he can see what it’s like to go up against proper NHL skaters.

Oilers depth forward power rankings: Devin Shore and Brendan Perlini are on the rise after two strong outings

Devin Shore – He was part of the NHL group on Monday at left wing. He’s played centre in both games. The versatility serves him well in the eyes of the coaching staff. A nifty setup on Brendan Perlini’s goal against the Kraken was the icing on the cake.

BLH’s Thoughts: He’s been good so far. He’s skating well, the puckhandling has been nice, he hasn’t been a liability to his teammates either.

Ryan McLeod – Ryan McLeod hasn’t exactly popped yet, but he’s been fine. Tuesday’s performance wasn’t nearly as good as Sunday’s, though Tippett categorized it as “solid.”… McLeod isn’t a lock to make the team, but it’s still his job to lose.

BLH’s Thoughts: McLeod has looked a bit sleepy so far. The Oilers are going to keep him on the roster, there’s no doubt in my mind about that, but he’s more likely to start on the 4th line until he can find his stride.

Kyle Turris – Turris looks better than he did at any point last season. That’s a good start. Two assists Tuesday only add to the equation… Tippett mentioned last week that Turris could take faceoffs on his strong side while playing with a lefthanded pivot like McLeod or Shore.

BLH’s Thoughts: Same as Shore for me. Turris looks renewed and I see no reason to cut him yet. He might even be building up some trade value. So keep an eye on him in that regard.

Brendan Perlini – Two goals on Tuesday. Three goals in two games. That’s about as good of a start to the preseason as Perlini could have hoped to have… Though it’s unlikely he’d get PK minutes for the Oilers, he’ll have to show he can bring other elements to his game.

BLH’s Thoughts: Scoring goals always helps. I’d like to see how he does against better competition though. He might not get PK minutes but with that shot, is it out of the realm of possibility that he gets some TOI on the 2nd PP unit?

Tyler Benson – Tyler Benson was one of the standouts of the first week of camp thanks to some excellent efforts in practices and scrimmages… Tuesday’s performance wasn’t anywhere near as good. The Oilers were out-attempted 6-4 in the 7:34 Benson was on the ice at five-on-five.

BLH’s Thoughts: Just as Louie DeBrusk clued us in last week, the shine on Benson’s early training camp star has dimmed a bit. At least until last night against the Jets, but we’ve already talked about that. He’s at the point to where Perlini is passing him and so he needs to start pulling some rabbits out his hat to regain that favor he had early on.

Colton Sceviour – Being in camp on a tryout offer isn’t ideal, but it doesn’t necessarily mean Colton Sceviour is heading upstream without a paddle. In fact, he’s done a decent job through two games. The chances of making the team and earning a contract drastically increase if Archibald doesn’t play for the Oilers this season.

BLH’s Thoughts: He’s been quiet so far I feel, but not bad per se. I’d like to see more from him to be honest. I reckon there’s a physical game we haven’t seen yet.

Cooper Marody – Cooper Marody wasn’t part of the main group Monday and didn’t play Tuesday. Of all the players here, he is the only one with no chance — or next to no chance — of playing either special team at the NHL level this season… Marody is expected to play Wednesday in Winnipeg, providing him with the latest chance to alter his stock. There’s still time left.

BLH’s Thoughts: He’s getting passed by with every shift. That said, he had one backcheck last night that prevented a scoring chance that impressed me. The rest of his performances have left me wanting though.

The Hockey Writers (Rumors)

  • Pierre LeBrun noted during the most recent episode of TSN’s Insider Trading that the Canadiens have extended a formal offer to their current GM to remain their GM. That contract extension was offered back in July, according to LeBrun’s sources.
  • LeBrun also points out that the Lightning have agreed to an extension with Julien Brisebois and he has signed a new multi-year contract to remain in Tampa.
  • Elliotte Friedman noted during his new 32 Thoughts podcast that Jack Eichel and the Buffalo Sabres could wind up battling out the legalities of his contract if this stalemate between the two sides continues.
  • There was a lot of talk about Jake DeBrusk this summer and speculation he might be traded after underperforming based upon expectations. He wasn’t moved and DeBrusk will be back for another season with a clean slate and a new attitude.
  • According to an NHL.com story, Kane isn’t just being investigated because of allegations of serious “past behaviour toward Ms. Kane”, but they are looking at him regarding allegations of inappropriate behaviour potentially jeopardizing the health and safety of Club members.”
  • As reported by Rick Dhaliwal on Monday, Hamonic may decide to opt out of this coming NHL season or even retire and that all options are on the table as the defenseman tries to figure out what to do about this coming season.
  • As per the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch, GM Pierre Dorion has been in daily contact with Tkachuk’s agents Craig Oster and Don Meehan. The long-term deal tabled might not be the issue between the two sides (a rumored eight-year, $64 million contract) but the bonus money that comes with the deal. In other words, it’s the structure of the long-term deal that is holding things up.

9 bold predictions for the Oilers in 2021-22
  1. The Oilers will finish within five points of the division leader
  2. Ken Holland will trade for a goalie by the deadline
  3. Connor McDavid will win the Art Ross Trophy
  4. The Oilers will have five 20-goal scorers
  5. Dave Tippett will deploy a dozen defencemen
  6. The Oilers will outscore their opposition at five-on-five
  7. Draisaitl will score 45-plus goals
  8. Oilers will push close to 300 goals this season
  9. The Oilers will win a playoff round

BLH’s Thoughts: I think the Oilers will BE the division leader.

If the Oilers are in a good spot, I think Holland stays with his veteran goalies. Does he have a history of making goalie trades at the deadline?

McDavid winning the Art Ross might be the least bold prediction.

The Oilers will have MORE than five 20g scorers in 2021-22.

If the Oilers have to use 12 defensemen, their season has probably hit the skids… So I’ll say no to this one.

45 goals is well within reach for Leon. What about 55? That would be a proper bold prediction.

300 goals for the club in total? Sure. I can go with that.

The Oilers are going to win more than one playoff round. That’s MY bold prediction.

Perlini waging intense battle for Edmonton Oilers depth spot
  • With five of Edmonton’s top six spots locked up, and Warren Foegele, Derek Ryan, Zack Kassian and Kailer Yamamoto guaranteed four more, battles for the remaining few positions are heating up already.
  • Perlini, Tyler Benson, Devin Shore, Kyle Turris, Ryan McLeod and Colton Sceviour are all pushing hard. And who knows what will become of Josh Archibald, who’s sitting out while he decides whether to get vaccinated or not.
  • That’s all Perlini wanted when he came to Edmonton in search of a spot: A fair fight. He’s getting one, and making the most of it so far.
  • Perlini, who signed a one-year, two-way contract in August, knows Tippet from his Arizona days and believes the familiarity will help with his quest to be an everyday Oiler. He already knows what the coach expects and the coach already knows what the high end of his game looks like.

BLH’s Thoughts: Like I said yesterday, we’ve seen the pre-season all-star show before from fringe players in the past. So, if you’re new to being an Oilers supporter, don’t get all hung up on a 4th line LW who’s lighting up goalies who are just getting into game shape or are AHL/ECHL/Major Junior caliber.

With that in mind, Perlini has been the better out of him, Benson, and Shore so far.

However, last night vs. WPG, Tyler Benson had himself a VERY good 3rd period on a line with Xavier Bourgault and I think Colton Sceviour. I could be wrong on the Sceviour call though, so don’t quote me there, but Benson got himself involved every time he hit the ice in the final frame. Which is great news for him, let’s hope we see more of that on the weekend.

Speaking of “Go-Go”, Edmonton’s 2021 1st round pick is looking electric! I’ve found his speed and quickness to be NHL caliber and his work in the muck has been really pleasing. The kid’s hockey IQ is right up there too.

In year’s past, he’d be playing for the club on opening night, but that probably won’t be happening this year. All he needs to do is work on bulking up and getting stronger and he’ll be in the NHL as early as next season but more likely in 2023 as a full-timer.

Personally, I think that Bourgault has been better than Yamamoto so far, but it’s early days. That said, if “Go-Go” is still on the roster late in camp… The brass in Edmonton might be seeing the same thing I am…

THE HOCKEY NEWS: Adam Proteau believes it could take some time, perhaps until the March trade deadline, for the Buffalo Sabres to move Jack Eichel and the St. Louis Blues to deal away Vladimir Tarasenko.

  • One reason is roughly half the teams in the league have less than $1 million in cap space.

SPORTSNET: During his latest “32 Thoughts” podcast, Elliotte Friedman speculates it could take the NHL stepping in to resolve the impasse between the Sabres and Eichel over which medical procedure he’ll undergo to repair a herniated disc in his neck.

The Cult of Hockey

Edmonton Oilers had 8th best goalies in NHL last year, but ESPN ranks them 5th worst in league.
  • This in from ESPN’s provocative writer Greg Wyshynski, his ranking of goaltender tandems in the NHL this year, with the Edmonton tandem of Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen ranked 27th out of 32.

“Every goaltending expert we spoke with for this ranking remains baffled by the Oilers. Baffled that this duo is back for a third straight season. Baffled that they’re actually not that bad — a .910 team save percentage in the offensively explosive North Division in 2020-21, good for 8th in the league. Baffled at how Smith, now 39 years old, continues to defy the odds with performances like his .923 save percentage and 21-6-2 record last season. But at least one expert thinks the magic is going to run out. ‘I expect a significant regression for them,’ he said.” – Wyshynski

  • A number of team’s finished lower than the Oilers at .910 in save percentage last year, made no changes in net, but ESPN now ranks them higher than Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen.
  • But along with finishing 8th in save percentage last year, the Oilers tandem of Smith and Koskinen finished 14th overall in 2019-20, with a .906 save percentage. It’s possible their results could crash to 28th, but I don’t think that’s a great bet.
  • The 28th team in 2019-20 had a .898 save percentage. The 28th team last year was at .895. Again, it’s possible that Smith and Koskinen could utterly crater and end up with an .895 save percentage.
  • …the odd thing about goalies on the aging curve is that the ones who are still good at age 38 can often be good for a few years, as seen with Dominik Hasek, who was a strong goalie until age 42, Jaques Plante, good until 43, George Hainsworth, good until 42, Gump Worsley, good until 42, and Martin Brodeur and Ed Belfour, good until 41.

BLH’s Thoughts: Puck Daddy LOVES to troll the Oilers fanbase. He finds a way to get under the skin of the supporters every year and this year is obviously no different.

That being said, I’ve also heard from sources connected to high-up league execs that when Holland re-signed Mike Smith there was a collective laughter let out. They were asking themselves, “Why?!” and if I’m being honest, I was asking that same question.

As fans, all we can do is sit back and trust the Edmonton’s netminders worked their asses off this summer and are properly motivated to prove their critics wrong. I like that the Oilers’ defense is more experienced now and I feel like that could go a long way in helping keep the puck out of the net. Hopefully it helps Smith and Koskinen stay healthy this year too.

Oilers’ 3 Bold Predictions for the 2021-22 Season
  1. Yamamoto Will Bounce Back
  2. Edmonton Will Have at Least Six 20-Goal Scorers
  3. McDavid Will Set a New Career High in Points

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t think that Yamo will have the kind of rebound some are thinking he will and the reason for that is that I don’t think he’s a top-six goal scorer and most of his points will come via Leon Draisaitl’s boat oar of a hockey blade.

The writer reckons that since McDavid, Draisaitl, Hyman, RNH, and Turris have all scored 20 in the past and Nurse and Pulju have come very close, it’s only reasonable to predict that the club will finish the season with six players with 20 ginos or more.

My feeling is that barring injury, the team will have at least six (if not more) who’ll hit that mark. I think McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH, Puljujarvi, and Hyman are guaranteed 20 and pick one out of Nurse, Barrie, or Foegele to be the other to hit the Venti.

If Connor hit 150 points this year, it wouldn’t phase me in the least. I wonder if he busts through the stratosphere this year and challenges some of Gretzky’s old marks soon though.

The Daily Goal Horn

Ottawa SunIt’s believed the Senators have tabled an eight-year, $64-million deal to Tkachuk’s camp and remain focused on trying to get him signed to a long-term deal. That’s the same contract signed by Ottawa defenceman ThomasChabot that will pay him $8 million per season. The indications are the Senators and Tkachuk aren’t that far apart in terms of dollars.

“There are some teams that feel the same way Buffalo does about the surgery (getting a fusion). There are teams legitimately interested in trading for Eichel, who feel they don’t have all the information. How can you make the best possible offer for Jack Eichel without knowing exactly what all the doctors are saying? My goal to end the log jam is that teams can see his records.” – Elliotte Friedman, 32 Thoughts Podcast

Important dates for the 2021-22 NHL season
  • In a joint announcement by the NHL and NHLPA, the league announced the dates for some key events in the schedule like the last possible day for the Stanley Cup Finals (June 30th), the NHL Entry Draft (July 7-8), the start of free agency (July 12th)…
  • While some events like the Draft and free agency are a little bit later than usual — this is the second third straight offseason with free agency not landing on Canada Day — we’re getting a lot closer to normal than we were even last year, and it will be interesting to see if any of these dates change as the year progresses.

BLH’s Thoughts: July 11th will be a date to keep an eye on if Kailer Yamamoto and Jesse Puljujarvi haven’t re-upped by then. Also March 21st is the NHL trade deadline. Hopefully May 2nd is another date that will have a significant impact on the Oilers season.

Oilers power play still a fright for opposing teams
  • While the Edmonton Oilers have Zack Kassian and Darnell Nurse to shoo the flies away from the stars, they really beat teams up on their power play with 107 goals in 127 games over the last two seasons—with Boston Bruins a distant second at 92.
  • …they’re doing it, even though 10 teams including Arizona and Ottawa, have somehow drawn more than their 374 power plays.
  • Over the last two seasons, the Oilers have a 28.6 success rate on the power play, almost five percent higher than Boston, St. Louis and Carolina at 23.8.
  • With the NHL cracking down on cross-checking, and inevitably calling a raft of those penalties in the early going of the season, we’ll see if the Oilers get more calls.
  • Darnell Nurse is healthy and wealthy, signing that eight-year $74 million contract, which got everybody’s attention around the NHL, now he also has to catch the eye of the selectors for Canada’s Olympic team blueline.
  • …the left is more wide-open with Shea Thedore, Pietrangelo’s Vegas teammate, Adam Pelech (Islanders), Jakob Chychrun (Arizona), Morgan Rielly (Leafs) and Thomas Chabot (Ottawa) all in the mix along with Nurse.
  • The unvaxxed Josh Archibald still isn’t a participant at Oiler practices, five days after he left quarantine… But there’s no message-sending from the team. Sources confirms he isn’t feeling right physically.
  • Defenceman Kris Russell (neck issue) was back with the experienced Oiler group Monday.

BLH’s Thoughts: As long as the Oilers have as many elite offensive pieces on their club, the power play is always going to be at the top the league. Now they’ve got two very high-end net front pieces in Hyman and Puljujarvi to add to it.

Personally, I think Hockey Canada should take Nurse over Rielly and Pelech. Chabot and Theodore should be shoe-ins for the team though. Darnell has taken his game to the next level in a way that Rielly and Pelech haven’t. He’s truly a two-way threat now and he can play MASSIVE minutes as displayed in last year’s playoffs during that OT loss where he had over 1hr in TOI. Jakob Chychrun is going to be a direct threat to Nurse’s spot though… Keep an eye on that talented young man.

If a player has been infected with COVID during training camp, does the club have to disclose that information or is that only during the regular season?…

NHLTradeRumor.com

Luke Fox of Sportsnet reports the Florida Panthers should do everything in their power to sign Barkov and prevent a John Tavares situation that happened to the New York Islanders… Barkov should rightly become the highest-paid player in Panthers history. It is likely he will be looking for a $11 million/year contact… if not signed to a contract he could be playing for another team.

It was reported earlier this offseason that Tomas Hertl would rather be traded then re-sign with the San Jose Sharks. One team that had serious interest in a trade was the Ottawa Senators… It is looking like GM Wilson would like to re-sign Hertl but not to the dollar amount Hertl wants. It is likely Hertl will be traded at the 2022 NHL trade deadline.

Oilers excited to take chance on former first-round LW Brendan Perlini
  • Perlini, who played his first NHL season in Arizona under Tippett in 2016-17, is at Oilers camp on a two-way deal, vying for the left wing spot on Edmonton’s fourth line.
  • So what was it that caused the NHL to move on from a first-rounder with great size and above average skating ability? Hockey sense, two separate scouts told us. In both ends, Perlini was not in the right places often enough.
  • Another scout said he was a bit miscast under then-Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet in his second NHL season. Perlini was not physical enough to earn the ice time he needed to produce. In the wrong place at the wrong time for a skill guy.
  • If Perlini can figure out how to be a reliable fourth-line player, his skills may allow him to be part of that support scoring that the Oilers have lacked.

“When you’re surrounded by world class players, McDavid, Draisaitl, you’ve got to provide support. Do something a little bit different (than he’s done in the past). Just play good, solid hockey.”

BLH’s Thoughts: At this point, if I were Coach Tippett, I’d probably keep Perlini and figure out who’s going on waivers between Tyler Benson and Kyle Turris. I like Perlini’s skating, his size, physicality (so far), and that shot is really something. Check out the goal below.

Now, we’re only a few days into camp, so there’s no need to make any brash decisions, but Mr. Benson needs to pick it up and do something to impress the coaching staff otherwise he’s going to make their decision very easy.

At the end of camp, if Perlini and Benson are still battling it out, it wouldn’t shock me if the Oilers made a trade.

The Oilers Rig

What to Expect in Puljujarvi and Yamamoto’s Next Contracts
  • The summer of 2022 is going to be interesting as it will shape the direction of the Oilers RW moving forward. Jesse Puljujarvi (JP) & Kailer Yamamoto (KY) are both in need of new contracts and the Oilers have essentially pitted the two against each other, having their deals expire the same season and for the same dollar this season.
  • Contract comparables are a terrific spot to jump in as they more than likely will provide the frame-work for the two players next deals.
    • Brock Boeser (22) $5.875m x 3yrs
    • Travis Konecny (22) $5.50m x 6yrs
    • Alex Tuch (23) $4.75m x 7yrs
    • Colin White (21) $4.75m x 6yrs
    • Kevin Labanc (24) $4.725m x 4yrs
    • JT Compher (24) $3.5m x 4yrs
  • Boeser signed his extension after posting back to back 50+ point seasons and Konecny after back to back 45+ points seasons.
  • Jesse Puljujarvi Prediction: $4,750,000 AAV x 8 years
  • Kailer Yamamoto Prediction: $3,775,000 AAV x 3 years
  • …with prospects like Holloway, Lavoie and Bourgault on the rise JP & KY will need to cement their spots in the top 6 this season or risk falling out.

BLH’s Thoughts: The feeling I get is that Pulju’s comps might fall in closer to what Joel Farabee and Drake Batherson signed for this summer (5yrs/$30M-ish). Whereas, the prediction for Yamo’s next deal sounds about right.

That point about the kids coming up from Bakersfield, I’ve made it before and I really believe in it. That said, The Oilers don’t have to move on from Killer, they could simply transition him to the 3rd line and send the new kid up to Leon’s line. Yamamoto, to me, is the ultimate middle-six forward who specializes on the penalty kill.

If the Oilers have another young winger who’s poised to make the team, there’s not much sense in having him play 4th line RW for a year if his calling card is that of a skilled goal-scorer or playmaker.

Spector’s Hockey

OTTAWA SUN: Bruce Garrioch reports the Senators remain in contract talks with Brady Tkachuk’s representatives as training camp continues without the 22-year-old restricted free agent winger.

  • The issue is Tkachuk’s agents seek bonus money for their client and the Senators don’t want to go that route.

THE PROVINCE: Ben Kuzma reports Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning addressed the ongoing absence of defenseman Travis Hamonic from training camp. He expressed confidence last week that the 31-year-old would report after missing medicals and the start of training camp.

  • It’s believed Hamonic’s absence is related to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols for unvaccinated players for the upcoming season.
