NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Thomas Drance (The Athletic): Regarding the hold-up on a potential Vince Dunn to the Vancouver Canucks trade,
    • “There’s some LTI-related gymnastics awaiting the Blues front office on the horizon, so they’d ideally be looking for picks in return for Dunn, as opposed to a young forward… Which would make for a simpler and more appealing deal from a Vancouver perspective, particularly considering the Canucks’ own tight cap situation.”
  • Jonas Siegel (The Athletic): Says the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for at top-9 forward in return for defenseman Travis Dermott.
    • “…the Leafs will likely need to find another option for the top nine, ideally someone who can play centre when called upon. Does that mean dealing from the apparent surplus on the back end? Perhaps. Travis Dermott feels like the likeliest candidate to move.”
  • Anthony Scultore (The Daily Goal Horn): Reckons the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames or St. Louis Blues might be good trade partners when it comes to finding a new home for Anthony DeAngelo,
    • “Calgary is said to be in the market for a defenseman and Sam Bennett, a center may be a trade candidate. Regardless, I expect we will officially hear the Rangers involved in trade talks for Vince Dunn soon.”
  • Bob McKenzie: The Calgary Flames, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks are among the clubs potentially interested in 25-year-old New York Rangers defenseman Anthony DeAngelo.
    • The Rangers’ Plan B if a trade isn’t possible is to buy out DeAngelo at the end of the season. They’re not prepared to retain a huge portion of his $4.8 million annual average value nor are they willing to take on a huge contract coming back the other way. They’d only face a $300K penalty for buying him out next season and $800K the season after that.
  • George Richards (Florida Hockey Now): Believes one of the reasons that the surging Florida Panthers would like veteran d-man Keith Yandle to waive his NMC is because if he doesn’t, he’d be amongst the trio of blueliners they’d be forced to protect for the expansion draft.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): The Rangers have made it clear they’ll eat salary to facilitate a Tony DeAngelo Trade.
    • Pittsburgh has poked around Travis Dermott (TOR).
    • It’s possible the Penguins make multiple hires to bolster the front office. Seattle Kraken’s Alexandra Mandrycky’s name has been mentioned.
    • Brett Connolly (FLA) started the season well but has been a healthy scratch recently. He might be available and there’s a possibility that a Cup contender could have interest.
    • 21yr old Skelleftea netminder Arvid Soderblom has a few NHL teams interested, Chicago could be one of them.

BLH’s Thoughts: I wonder if there’d be interest from the Oilers in Brett Connolly. I do believe they wanted to sign him before he landed in Florida as a UFA. Would you try to make a deal that was built around Zack Kassian for him?

  • Darren Dreger (TSN): There’s a lot of interest in DeAngelo all of a sudden and could be moved within the next 24-72 hours.
    • The Calgary Flames are in no hurry to trade allegedly disgruntled forward Sam Bennett. GM Brad Treliving is willing to wait things out in order to find the right deal.
  • Bob Stauffer (630CHED): Could see DeAngelo traded to a team in a “quieter market” in the next 48 hours.

BLH’s Thoughts: I’m a little bit surprised that there’s actual interest in this player, but when you think about it, the team that acquires him doesn’t have to play him. They can ask him to stay home or report to the minors and then buy him out at a third of his contracts value, right? I think the key here is that the team trading for him will be looking to offload a bad contract like Vancouver and Loui Eriksson, for example.

  • Frank Seravalli (TSN): February 1st was the first day of the Seattle Kraken expansion draft ‘no-move’ request window. Teams can now start to request players to waive their NMCs so they won’t have to be protected in June.
  • Sam Carchidi (Philadelphia Inquirer): Former Flyers defenseman Matt Niskanen said he’s done playing but the club hasn’t terminated his contract leaving speculation that the door is still open for a potential return.
  • Matt Sekeres (TSN 1040): Sees Adam Gaudette as trade bait and that Jake Virtanen will be tough to trade. Believes that Virtanen is a healthy scratch away from formally requesting a trade.

(1/25/2021) – BLH’s NHL Rumors: “It’s been a rumor for some time but it has more legs now.”

BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring Elias Pettersson (VAN), Victor Mete (MTL), Blake Wheeler (WPG), Keith Yandle, Shane Gostisbehere (PHI), and more!

The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defense and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?

TSN’s Frank Seravalli says that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins might not be in the Oilers’ plans going forward. Read all about it right here.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Word is Elias Pettersson is switching agents to Brisson/Barry at CAA (same agents as Quinn Hughes, Tyler Myers, Loui Eriksson, and Jett Woo). He’s set to be an RFA after this season.
    • Some teams have asked if the entry draft could be moved back to December/January. Another has suggested that two drafts take place, one for late ’02/’03 players and another for late ’03/04 players.
    • There are teams circling around the Victor Mete situation, seeing how Montreal will deal with it.
    • The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking if they can add or upgrade at forward now that they’ve got a couple of key forwards out of the lineup in Nick Robertson and Joe Thornton.
  • Jimmy Murphy (Florida Hockey Now): The Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings both had talks with Winnipeg on Jack Roslovic before the Pierre-Luc Dubois trade. Both are looking for defense help, too, and could target Danny DeKeyser.
    • There’s some chatter regarding a Shane Gostisbehere (PHI)/Keith Yandle (FLA) trade. It’s been a rumor for some time but it has more legs now. If Philadelphia could eat some money, the feeling is that they’re easily better with Yandle.
  • Aaron Portzline (The Athletic): Jarmo Kekalainen said he’s already had preliminary talks with Patrik Laine about a contract extension and establishing a long-term relationship with the Columbus Blue Jackets.
  • Chris Johnston (Sportsnet): Something being discussed is the possibility of a tournament/series in the Spring for draft-eligibles that haven’t been able to play this season. A prospect showcase of sorts.
  • Bruce Garrioch (Ottawa Sun): Blake Wheeler regrets the way he handled his relationship with Patrik Laine saying if he had communicated better maybe it would’ve made things better.

  • Rob Ellis (94WIP): The New York Rangers could be looking to move defenseman Tony DeAngelo. The Vegas Golden Knights had an interest in him prior to signing Alex Pietrangelo.
  • Chad DeDominicis (Die by the Blade): The Buffalo Sabres have made progress on trading for a goaltender “out of the west”. It’s a complicated deal.
  • David Pagnotta (The Fourth Period): The Montreal Canadiens were offering the Columbus Blue Jackets Cole Caufield, Jesperi Kotkaniemi, and some other minor pieces for Pierre-Luc Dubois.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • David Pagnotta (The Fourth Period): Teams interested in Pierre-Luc Dubois include Anaheim, Calgary, New York, Winnipeg, Los Angeles, and Vegas. Talks are expected to pick up very soon.
  • Josh Yohe (The Athletic): If the Pittsburgh Penguins continue to struggle in the next few weeks, General Manager Jim Rutherford will look to make a trade.
  • Darren Dreger (TSN): The Penguins are in the market for the best available defenseman and could be willing to give up a valued asset for one. Speculation is he knows he’ll have to settle for a third pair guy.
    • On the future of Panthers franchise player Alexander Barkov: “Barkov wants to win, and he wants to make sure the Florida Panthers are on that road. If that is the direction the Panthers are headed, Barkov will listen.”
  • Bruce Garrioch (Ottawa Sun): The Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils, and Chicago Blackhawks are among the potential suitors for Winnipeg Jets winger Patrik Laine.
  • Chad DeDominicis (Die by the Blade): In the past 72 hours, the Buffalo Sabres have spoken to a handful of teams about goaltenders.
  • Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic): “Some teams who are interested in Pierre-Luc Dubois intend to circle back to Columbus pretty soon. Everyone is watching this unfold.”
  • Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic): On the kind of returns he could see Jack Roslovic and Patrik Laine netting the Winnipeg Jets in trades as well as what it could take for the Flames to trade for Pierre-Luc Dubois,
    • ” I don’t see Roslovic commanding a first-round pick, even though that’s what he was (25th overall in 2015). Could he fetch a second? Probably.”
    • “For Laine, Winnipeg is going to ask for a premium player in return.”
    • “(Sean) Monahan and a sweetener? Yes, that I can see happening.”

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Bruce Garrioch (Ottawa Sun): Says the Blue Jackets aren’t alone in their pursuit of Winnipeg Jets winger Patrik Laine,
    • “The Jackets aren’t alone. You can include the Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks as teams that would be interested in Laine. People have talked about the Carolina Hurricanes having interest, but that makes zero sense because they wouldn’t want to shell out that kind of cash.”
  • Danny Silver (NHLTradeRumors.me): Says that the Arizona Coyotes could be after Florida Panthers d-man Keith Yandle,
    • Shane Doan has just made his return to the Coyotes organization. Although he is in an advisory role, his voice could be persuasive in obtaining his former teammate. The Coyotes aren’t a terrible hockey team, but they surely aren’t a good hockey team. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has been placed on LTIR and perhaps acquiring Yandle will be their only hope at salvaging the gaping hole on the blue line.”
  • Mark Easson (NHLRumors.com): Suggests the Florida Panthers could be in for some big changes this summer,
    • “With so much speculation already bubbling over two of the panthers’ Veterans before their season began, one wonders what changes could be in store if this season ends in disappointment like all the others. Aging, expensive players like Keith Yandle could be traded or bought out. Perhaps the core gets shaken up by moving Jonathan Huberdeau, Alexander Barkov, or defenseman Aaron Ekblad.”
  • Adam Gretz (NBC): Had some harsh words for the Edmonton Oilers after reviewing their early-season woes,
    • “When they have an MVP on the ice they look like a potential playoff team. Without either, they look like an expansion team.”
  • Darren Dreger (TSN): Recently speculated on if the Chicago Blackhawks need to go full rebuild and two names they could go after,
    • “But with some of the names that are kind of floating around like Pierre-Luc Dubois as an example with the Columbus Blue Jackets, I can’t imagine that Stan Bowman hasn’t made calls to Columbus. You know, trying to figure that out.”
    • “A younger piece, maybe Laine comes into the discussion. I don’t know. It’s just wondering whether or not Chicago has the future assets to make a deal like that happen.”
  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): On if the Chicago Blackhawks would move star forward Patrick Kane,
    • “I mean, look, the way I always look at it is this, what situation do you see him getting traded? Do you see the Chicago Blackhawks going to Patrick Kane? The one thing you have to look at here is, when this is over, you have to sell tickets and all these teams are going to be trying to make money. In a gate driven league after fans have been out of games for a year and a half, what do you think gives the Blackhawks a better chance to sell tickets – Patrick Kane or no Patrick Kane?”
    • More on Pierre-Luc Dubois from Friedman, “Teams we haven’t thought about like “A Tampa Bay or Colorado,” may have sniffed around. The Canadiens, Flames, Rangers, and Hurricanes are the usual “suspects” around this situation too.”
  • TSN Radio: If the Ottawa Senators were to trade for PLD, there’s a good chance that young defenseman Erik Brannstrom would go to Columbus.
