BLH Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap Jan 24th-31st

Taken from oilers.nhl.com
Taylor Hall Celebrating in front of Mark Giordano, who’s a big tough guy that likes to hit people into the boards.

Hey guys! I’m back from a one week hiatus (I had a Basketball Coaching Clinic last Sunday).

During that one week break….the Oilers didn’t lose a game! They also didn’t win a game. Or lost in Overtime. Or the shootout.

There were no Edmonton Oilers games this past week. A weird blip on the schedule as the All Star Festivities are taking place in Nashville this weekend.

The most notable Edmonton Oiler event was the Skills Competition which took place last Sunday.

Which, if you’re like me, who missed out completely, here is the Skills Competition in it’s entirety.

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars

There are none. Nobody gets a gold star due to lack of participation.

Seriously though, kinda hard to give three stars when there are no games.

IF I had to give one, I’ll go with Taylor Hall since he is representing the Edmonton Oilers today in the NHL All Star Game. Surprisingly, it is his first NHL All Star game. A bit shocking, but considering his injury woes and his career best year of 2013-14 had the olympics, it’s reasonable.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors

There’s some rumblings out there concerning the Oilers.

First off, last week the Edmonton Oilers claimed Adam Clendening off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks. Clendening is now officially on his fifth NHL team since last season (7th professional team if you count the AHL)

What does he bring? Clendening is a Right handed shot, offensive defenseman who is on his last year of his Entry Level Contract. His downside is that he is a bit slower and struggles defensively.

Personally, this guy is the Justin Schultz replacement. He brings the same skill set as Schultz and is 3.2 million dollars cheaper in terms of cap.

Another rumour out there: Hamonic to Edmonton from Elliotte Friedman. Friedman was on Oilers Now saying to host Bob Stauffer that he believes the Oilers are working hard to get the deal done, with Jordan Eberle being the most likely candidate. He also mentioned Justin Schultz being on his way out, possibly to Buffalo.

Now it’s important to note that Friedman would tell Staples, the author of the link, that it was more of him speculating. I wrote at Oilonwhyte a few months ago that Eberle would be the most likely piece to be moved, depending on the fit. With it sounding that the Islanders are having trouble working on an extension with Kyle Okposo, maybe a fit is there?

Around the League

John Scott has an awesome Players Tribune Article.

Sticking with the Players tribune, Taylor Hall was part of the “What the Blank” series.

Commissioner Gary Bettman signed an extension to remain Commissioner thru 2022.

NHL Breakaway Challenge: Chewie, Jagr 2.0, and Lil’ Burns Bustin’ a Move!

Jagr’s doppleganger?

How about that? The breakaway challenge never ceases to amaze me. Brent Burns dressing up as Chewbacca, PK Subban’s Jagr impression (Mullet wig included), and they brought the kids out again as Jagger Burns and Joe Pavelski’s kids made an appearance! Check it out below!

Matt Duchene’s juggling act would’ve been awesome if he could’ve kept the puck on his stick and Kuznetsov looked perrrrty nervous out there. Brandon Saad’s first attempt was sweet but his second was piss poor.  Check out the results below!

Participants/Results (from NHL.com):

East:

Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets

Beer League Heroes 15 – 16 Season Primers: Florida Panthers

Who will fall out in the East so the Panthers can make the playoffs?

I’m telling you right now the Florida Panthers are a team on the rise. They’ll join the likes of the Buffalo Sabres and the Edmonton Oilers as NHL powerhouses in the next few years no doubt. Will they do it with this group of players, I’m not so sure about that. The veterans they do have at the moment are exactly the ones you’d want to have on a burgeoning team like this. Jaromir Jagr, Brian Campbell, Willie Mitchell and Roberto Luongo are the perfect mentors for the young Panthers. I can only imagine where the Oilers would be if they had those players on their team. Funny thing is I’m pretty sure each one of those veterans have been linked to Edmonton at one point or another in their careers.

Key Addition: F Reilly Smith, F Corban Knight, F Greg McKegg, D Cameron Gaunce, G Mike McKenna

Key Departures: F Brad Boyes, F Jimmy Hayes, D Shane O’Brien, D Jesse Blacker, G Dan Ellis

Roster Contenders: F Lawson Crouse, F Rocco Grimaldi, F Quinton Howden, D Alex Petrovic, D Mike Matheson

Last season the Florida Panthers jumped 25 points in the standings from the 66 points to 91!! That’s what you call progress. Maybe that is something we can optimistically expect out of the Oilers this year… Anyways, the roster didn’t go through a lot of turnover that I would call “Earth Shattering”. The team is more or less the same as last year and that is including the coaching staff as well. The difference this season? Everyone’s a year older and hungrier than ever after coming within a few wins of a playoff spot last year.

I think we’ll see Jonathan Huberdeau continue his rise alongside Jaromir Jagr and Sasha Barkov. Nick Bjugstad is also trending upwards and turning into one of the league’s best two-way centermen. And how can we get through this preview without mentioning the man-child Aaron Ekblad? Is it embarrassing to other NHLers that come playoff time Ekblad, who is 19 years old, has had a better beard than them since he was probably 14 years old? Bloody Awesome it is… And not awesome like, “Hey, the new NHL game is awesome!” I mean it inspires Awe like, “How the hell does that even happen?”

Potential Lineups

Huberdeau – Barkov – Jagr
Jokinen – Bjugstad – Smith
Pirri – Bolland – Trocheck
Howden – MacKenzie – Grimaldi

Campebell – Ekblad
Kulikov – Gudbranson
Mitchell – Petrovic

Luongo
Montoya

Jaromir Jagr… I guess this guy is our generation’s version of Gordie Howe. An ageless hockey player that could still play with effectiveness well into his retirement years.

Florida was only 8 points off a playoff spot last season and I reckon the biggest threats to their playoff chances are the Ottawa Senators and Detroit Red Wings. If either of those teams fail to recreate last year’s performances I think we could see the Panthers sneak in there sort of how the Sens snuck in last year but with less luck in the net as Luongo is still a great NHL goalie.

Keep an eye on Lawson Crouse as he’ll be looking to crack the team as an 18 yr old. He’s already known for his two-way game and he’s got a man’s body already. Let’s hope he’s a bit closer to Eric Lindros than Ben Eager though.
