Edmonton Oilers Preview:

Big news this afternoon as the Oilers vs Winnipeg Jets Heritage Classic game was confirmed. The news came down just hours before the two teams take each other on in the Hometown Hockey matchup.

I’ve long waited for the team to get another outdoor game after the first outdoor game was played in Edmonton 13 years ago.

“We are very excited to have another opportunity to play in an outdoor game,” Oilers Entertainment Group Vice-Chairman Kevin Lowe said. “The inaugural Heritage Classic, held in Edmonton, was a huge success and something people will always remember. Although most people talk about the Battle of Alberta throughout the 80’s, games against the Jets during that era were just as fierce and competitive.”

It’s great to see the league pay tribute to the days of old when the Oilers and Jets entered the NHL in 1979 after having played in the World Hockey Association for years prior. Alumni teams from both the Oilers and Jets will face off on Oct. 22, 2016 and the two NHL rosters will face off the following day.

With Wayne Gretzky captaining the Oilers alumni squad, Dale Hawerchuk will captain the Jets alumni team.

Tonight, the two teams will face off for the third and final team this season after squaring off twice already. The Oilers won the first game 3-1, and the Jets won the second 2-1 in a shootout.

Adam Pardy returns to Winnipeg for the first time as a member of the Edmonton Oilers after being claimed on waivers and put right into the lineup.

“It’s going to be fun,” said the 31-year-old Pardy. “It’s always nice to come back right away and show the team that let you go that you can play. It’s always a little more excitement, a little more intensity. It’s definitely easy to get up for these games.”

The three games Pardy has played in Edmonton has seen him playing over 20 minutes a night, and he is on a two-game point streak with an assist in each of the last two games.

For tonight’s game, Adam Cracknell slides in place of Iiro Pakarinen on the fourth line and Adam Clendening gets paired up with Darnell Nurse on the third pairing.

After getting embarrassed by the Blue Jackets on Friday night, I would bet on the Oilers having a strong showing tonight. The five games prior to the Jackets game were great and now with the remainder of the Oilers games this year against Western Conference teams it will be interesting to see how the boys respond.

Quotes from oilers.nhl.com.

Predictions for tonight:

  1. Adam Pardy has to get some anger out after being waived, and fights one of his former teammates.
  2. In another physical affair, Patrick Maroon leads all Oilers with 5 hits.
  3. The Jets fall to the Oilers 4-3.

How did last games predictions go:

  1. The Oilers top six continues to roll, and score three of tonight’s five goals
  2. Laurent Brossoit comes in and has another great showing. The young guy can play and may be in the conversation for the backup role next year in Edmonton
  3. The Oilers win 5-2.

Oilers lost bad.

That game was a reeeeaaaaaal head scratcher.

Winnipeg Jets Preview:

Defenseman Jacob Trouba may play after missing a 4-2 home win against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday because of an upper-body injury. Defenseman Dustin Byfuglien has a career-high eight-game point streak (one goal, seven assists). Center Mark Scheifele has five goals in his past two games and had his first NHL hat trick Saturday. Coach Paul Maurice has not confirmed a starting goaltender; Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson have alternated the past five starts, with Pavelec playing Saturday. The Jets are 1-1-1 on a five-game homestand that ends against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

Big news tonight in Edmonton as Oilers G Cam Talbot has come down with an illness. Prospect Laurent Brossoit will get his second career NHL start just two days after being recalled from the Bakersfield Condors.

The Oilers are in tough against a physical, heavy Winnipeg Jets team. It really will be a test for the Oilers. Historically, the Oilers struggle against bigger teams. Simply put, it’s because the Oilers themselves have yet to find ways to win against these groups. Maybe it’s because the Oilers don’t have the physical players to deal with the style of play the Jets bring.

“In my opinion, we stole the game when we played them [Dec. 21, EDM 3 – WPG 1],” said Head Coach Todd McLellan. “We had a good start, we built up a lead and then we decided we just wanted to defend and with their size and their ability to roll around in your end, that’s not a good recipe. You’ve got to keep attacking. They do play a hard, strong game along the walls. They roll around good. Our power play is going to have to be sharp. They have a tendency to take some penalties, so if they do we’re going to have to make sure it’s sharp.”

When you look at tonight’s lines, it’s apparent that Todd McLellan has set the lines to allow for there to be physical presence on each line. Hopefully, this acts as a deterrent for anything too rough tonight but who knows. Other than that, the lines seen today are a mess.

Nail Yakupov is continuously getting buried on the third and fourth line without any real offensive players. To his own credit, he is producing 1.7 points per hour on ice which is good to see.

Winnipeg is on the cusp on missing out on the Playoffs and they’ve been really struggling as of late, going 7-9-1 since the beginning of January. The team has been frustrated, and with there being no clear direction in which the team has planned on going with UFA Captain Andrew Ladd it is an unneeded distraction for a team making a push.

The Winnipeg Jets are 0-22-2 when trailing after two periods, and 4-16-2 when trailing after the first, so let’s hope the team can come out strong.

None the less, the Oilers will have their work cut out for them.

Predictions for tonight:

  1. The current line combo’s don’t last all game.
  2. Nail Yakupov and Leon Draisaitl get some ice time together.
  3. Connor McDavid scores a bagillion goals.

Jets team scope: Winnipeg activated goaltender Ondrej Pavelec from injured reserve Friday before leaving to begin a four-game road trip. He has been out since injuring his knee Nov. 21 against the Arizona Coyotes. Rookie goaltender Connor Hellebuyck was reassigned to Manitoba of the American Hockey League. Coach Paul Maurice did not confirm a starting goaltender but said that Pavelec and Michael Hutchinson “somewhere in the next two or three games” each will play. Winnipeg remains last in the Central Division at 51 points. Center Bryan Little has scored in each of the past two games. The trip continues next Tuesday against the Carolina Hurricanes.  -nhl.com

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

You’re hot than you’re cold, you’re yes then you’re no.

The lines Katy Perry once sang in her hit “Hot ‘N Cold” (Yeah, I had it on my iPod) apply all too well to our Oilers. After winning the first six games of the month, the team has fallen to the hands of their opponent in their last three.

However, in the last three games one particular Oiler hasn’t been in the lineup. Oscar Klefbom.

As TSN’s Frank Seravalli pointed out in his #MondayMustRead, “you could make the argument that the Oilers have missed Oscar Klefbom has much as Connor McDavid.”

He also noted in the blurb that the Oilers have allowed an average of five (!) more shorts against and one more high-danger scoring chance against. Seravalli also noted that Klefbom could return to the lineup soon. I hadn’t really thought twice about the team’s performances sans McDavid, but it just goes to show how important he is to the team.

Klefbom is currently on pace for career high’s in Goals, Assists, Points and Time on Ice per game.

The season is still young, and this group is just finally getting it’s legs underneath themselves despite the last three losses. Mark Fayne, who was sent down to the Bakersfield Condors has been recalled and will draw into the lineup tonight.

Fayne’s play was so poor that it warranted his demotion and it showed this new management teams holds all players accountable. In five AHL games, Fayne had one assist.

The Jets have gone 5-5 in their last 10, compared to the Oilers who have gone 6-4 in their last 10. Both teams are on a bit of a cold stretch, so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top tonight.

The Otherside:

Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck is expected to start, but coach Paul Maurice has not confirmed. Winnipeg starts a stretch of seven of nine games on the road tied for the third-fewest road wins in the NHL (six). Having lost 10 of the past 13 road games (3-9-1), Winnipeg continue a two-game road trip Tuesday against the Calgary Flames. “It’s tough to explain sometimes,” defenseman Mark Stuart said of the road record, according to the Jets website. “You’re together as a team [on the road] and don’t have to worry about anything else but hockey and concentrating on the games. You can get on a roll. That’s what we need to do.”

BLH Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap Nov 8th-14th

Aww. Nuts.

Oilers had four games and they lost three of them. They did pull a surprise win against Anaheim despite being down (which is a recurring theme this year) Really, they had only one stinker of a game and that was probably against Arizona where they lost 4-1. They lost 4-2 against Chicago, but they had an amazing twenty shots in the second period but Corey Crawford decided to become a wall and they lost a close one against LA due to silly mistakes.

There are some glimmers of hope there but moral victories can only do so much for the fans and the team itself.

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars of the Week

3. Oscar Klefbom: Klefbom has been one of our best defencemen this year. Don’t look now, but in 18 games he has 10 points. I remember there being some concern about his offensive production but he’s pace for a 46 point season, although I’m sure he’ll trail off. I thought he was struggling at the start but he’s really picked up his game these last few games. It’s a great sight.

2. Taylor Hall: Ho hum, Hall has 20 points and is tied for fourth in NHL scoring. There were some people who didn’t think he was one of the top at his position (I have him third behind Ovechkin and Benn). He scored a tying goal in the third last night on his birthday. He’s a gem and it sucks that he’s wasted six years so far playing for a bad hockey team.

1. Leon Draisaitl: Leon is flat out a monster at the moment. Not only has he matched his point total from last season, he is sitting at thirteen points in only eight games. Like Klefbom, he’s bound to cool down the road but holy hell is he ever impressive. He seems to score at the right times and looks golden with Taylor Hall. Against Anaheim he had an impressive back check which lead to the game winning goal. Love the guy and I’m happy he’s ours.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors

There’s one rumor that Cam Fowler may be available and our very own Zach Laing looked at it over here . It would be an intruiging fit.

Some other names out there: Patrick Marleau and Matt Duchene. I don’t think they will be Edmonton Oilers bound and I think Marleau is moved (my NHL 16 be a gm always has Marleau traded, mostly to the Predators) but Duchene raises some eyebrows. I wonder what’s going on in Colorado: they already lost Stastny, O’Reilly and Duchene is not the problem. I don’t think Joe Sakic is very good in hockey ops and the record reflects it.
