Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Fresh Rumors for the New Year!

What a game last night! What have I been saying for nearly two weeks now? The Oilers aren’t getting scoring from the secondary because they aren’t going to the net and they aren’t shooting. What happens vs. Anaheim? They get shots on net and there are players there to clean up the garbage and against a potential Hart Trophy candidate in John Gibson no less.

The boys saved Chia’s ass last night 🙂

Would like to see them limit the other team’s shots on goal mind you. They’re not going to get goaltending like this every night and Anaheim is the 2nd worst scoring team in the league right now. With all of that depth and talent, it’s a shock their GM is even employed.

I’m still upset with Lucic even though he made a great play on Draisaitl’s goal by wallpapering Montour in order to get to the puck first so that he could make the play out front.

Speaking of that goal. The whole thing where he walks past Montour to give him a piece of his mind for the high stick, get’s punched in the head, headlocked, and receives 4 minutes in penalties for it… That was BS but it isn’t what caught my eye.

What I noticed was Montour not even thinking twice about throwing a punch at Lucic. That tells me he’s not feared anymore. Even little Leipsic in LA was giving it back to him.

It might just be time for Milan to hang them up OR he could go on one last tour of destruction. Either way, he’s not fooling anybody on the ice anymore.

I’m not even going to talk about the garbage with the reffing.

That’s a lie, I will for a second here.

Has anybody considered that maybe the league WANTS hitting taken out of the game? So they allow this BS to go on because they’re playing the long game? Take hitting out, no more headshots, no more concussions from hits, no more lawsuits. Plus faster play, more goals, more excitement… Bla bla bla… It’s all dumb because it’s all a lie.

I know for a fact there are some markets in the US that go to hockey games to see if a fight breaks out. I watched minor league hockey in Huntsville, AL (where Talbot played and Woodcroft coached) and the fans there couldn’t have cared less what was going on on the ice until there was a fight. THEN everyone stood up and cheered.

The NHL is looking after itself here. No doubt. I for one hope a new league forms one day that is a call-back to the great days of hockey.

Anyways, on to the rumors…

I’ve got a hunch that the Oilers have a plan to ice a more veteran-laden lineup for 2019-20. Letting the kids run the show has not worked one bit and that goes back to the days of H.O.P.E (Hall, Omark, Paajarvi, Eberle)… I’ll tie this together at the end to show you.

Bob Stauffer has been talking a lot about the weak draft coming up and how fans would feel if the Oilers used their first rounder in this year’s draft (lottery protected of course) to upgrade the roster.

So on Twitter the other day I threw out a hypothetical trade with the Flyers,

That proposal was only slightly hypothetical and after that performance against Anaheim, I’d be hard-pressed to trade Talbot but I believe the Oilers are interested in bringing Wayne Simmonds to play alongside Connor McDavid. Hitchcock likes having big bodies who are good along the boards and can play net-front, right? Yes, Simmonds is a UFA at season’s end and he’ll be 31 next season but he can still skate, score (on pace for 24 goals this year), and get dirty (53 PIMs).

I’m guessing the Flyers are having a tough time re-signing him and their desperation for a starting goalie is growing stronger by the loss. I am not sure how much money the Oilers would offer him to stay, perhaps just a bit more than he’s making now which is $3.975 million.

What would you offer him? $5.5 million for four years? Three years? How could the Oilers learn from the Milan Lucic debacle but still get their kind of man without developing him from within.

You probably noticed a former 2nd overall pick and 4th overall pick in that trade too. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on with Patrick in Philly. He’s not progressing as quickly as they’d like I suppose and he’s been injured quite a bit, but he’s a name I tossed out there to my source and I was told he’d very likely be the ask if Jesse Puljujarvi was included in the deal.

NOOOOOOO!!! DO. NOT. TRADE. PULJUJARVI!

I will not be a very happy Oilers fan if Pulju gets dealt, that much can be said.

Another name that is making the rounds is that of former Edmonton Oilers, Jordan Eberle!

Bob Stauffer brought him up on Friday during his show and I was asked how I felt about the Oilers potentially bringing him in by my source. To me, that says this is a serious consideration from the organization. To add to that, Jordan isn’t having a great time in Long Island since joining the club and I guess his significant other feels the same. They’re looking to go to a smaller market after this year and what better small market than Edmonton, right?

What would you pay Eberle now? He’s on pace for 14 goals right now and those are not numbers worthy of a $6 million player. Would you give him three years at $4 million per? I think I might.

Two other names that have popped up are Charles Hudon of the Montreal Canadiens and Daniel Carr of the Vegas Golden Knights.

Hudon has three goals and one assist in 23 games this year. That’s a stark contrast to what he produced last season (ten goals and 20 assists). He’s on an expiring contract worth 650k and he’ll be an RFA at the end of the year.

Whereas Carr is dominating the AHL right now (15g 20a in 24 gp). He makes 750k this season and is a UFA this summer.

The interesting thing about Carr and Hudon is that they have a history together ripping it up for Montreal’s farm teams in Hamilton and St. John’s from 2014-15 to 2016-17. They’re both high energy players, they’re quick and they play an honest game.

Bonus: Carr is a local lad. Born in Sherwood Park, he played midget in Leduc and junior for the St. Albert Steel.

I imagine Edmonton might try to peddle Matt Benning to Montreal for Hudon and wait to sign Carr in the off-season. \

I’ve also heard Colton Sceviour is a target the Oilers have been watching this year. He makes $1.2 million for two more years after this.

Tying It All Together

Here’s a potential snapshot of what the Oilers roster COULD look like next year if everything were to go to plan.

Draisaitl-McDavid-Simmonds
XXX (Lee)-RNH-Eberle
HudonPatrick-Yamamoto
Sceviour-Khaira-Kassian
Brodziak-Carr/Tanev

I have the Oilers buying out Spooner. It would cost them $1.3 million for two seasons to do that. The alternative is playing him beside RNH and Ebs… Can’t see it though.

Rattie, Gambardella, Rieder are all let go or signed to two-way deals.

There are some tasty UFAs that could hit the market this summer for that LW spot that include Jeff Skinner, Anders Lee, Ryan Dzingel, and Michael Ferland but at what cost? Lee would be awfully nice to have there for $6.5 million or so…

As for that extra forward spot, I think a player like Brandon Tanev would fit in there perfectly. His tenaciousness and work ethic would be very welcome on this team. Similar to Carr in my mind.

There’s also the question of Alex Chiasson. Would the Oilers walk away from his career-high in goals or re-sign him and for how much? I have him gone in my scenario though.

Klefbom-Larsson
Nurse-Russell
Jones-Gravel
Bouchard

Brandon Manning is either bought out as well (916k in year one, 666k in year two) or sent to the minors and I think his cap hit would only be a shade over a million dollars then. I’ve also got Petrovic walking but I feel like they’d prefer to retain him over Manning.

I’m of the belief that the Oilers won’t trade Russell. We’re seeing just how valuable he is to the players on this team. The emergence of Caleb Jones is making me wonder if the team might reconsider trading for a PP QB like Justin Faulk or Tyson Barrie now…

Kevin Gravel has played his way to a new contract in my opinion. He’s been very good when deployed in the correct slot and I hope they keep him.

As for Evan Bouchard, he’ll be too old for the OHL next season. My prediction is that he makes the team out of camp due to him having the best shot and the best passing ability. What concerns me is that his defensive reads and skating aren’t up to par and maybe two months in Bakersfield would do him a lot of good learning under the tutelage of Dave Manson.

Koskinen
XXX (Francouz)

I would see if Pavel Francouz would sign on the cheap here and form the KHL duo. Do you think Mikko Koskinen would sign for $4M?

Now when I said “if everything goes to plan”, that means the following,

  • Lucic is moved with 50% retained and no players come back to Edmonton. (Better case scenario is he retires and forfeits the pay.)
  • Andrej Sekera never plays another game for the Oilers again and it’s off to Ference island for him. That’d be a headache come day 1 of the season each remaining year on his deal though as the Oilers would only be able to dig into his IR cushion after that date.
  • New signings and re-signings take haircuts on their deals.

I’m not getting too in-depth here. I think there are some problems cap-wise with my roster above but I just wanted to give a brief overview of what the Oilers roster COULD look like if the hockey gords shined the good light on Edmonton for an off-season.

What do you think? Let me know in the comments section!

Edmonton Oilers: Memorable Season Openers

The 2018/19 journey for Lord Stanley’s cup begins in only a few hours for the Edmonton Oilers and I think there’s no better time to remember past season openers than now!

I have an atrocious memory for these sort of things and so I crowdsourced this one. I asked some people who I know have followed the Oilers a helluva lot closer than I have since they came into the league in the 1979/80 season for their favorite Oilers season opener memories and the following is what they so graciously provided me.

THE FIRST ONE

The first goal against Edmonton came from John Marks, a tally Oilers goalie Dave Dryden said shouldn’t have counted because Marks “kicked my pad over the line” thus beginning a 40-year love-hate relationship between Edmonton fans and NHL referees. Kevin Lowe scored the first goal in franchise history, scoring after a pass from Brett Callighen (via Wayne Gretzky) on the power play about 10 minutes into the team’s first NHL period. – Lowetide

This snippet is from LT’s latest post from The Athletic. It’s behind a pay-wall and I encourage all of you to subscribe as they’ve always got a deal going on to make it cheaper for everyone. You can subscribe here and full disclosure, if you do, The Athletic will let me have a $10 Amazon credit for helping them out.

THE FIRST GOAL AND A KO YOU’LL NEVER FORGET

2010 – Following the worst season in Oilers history at that time, Oilers fans felt that change was on the horizon. It was the debut of prized pick Taylor Hall, however, it was World Juniors hero Jordan Eberle who stole the show. I was sitting at Chili’s in Calgary Airport surrounded by Flames fans waiting for my flight home to Saskatoon from university for Thanksgiving break. Then, it happened. Eberle scored one of the most beautiful first goals in NHL history, which sent Rexall Place into a frenzy! Edmonton crushed the Flames 4-0 and Steve MacIntyre knocked a guy out in the third period, but it’s Eberle’s goal that we all remember. – Eric Friesen

CAN YOU REMEMBER A BETTER OPENING NIGHT HATTY?

2017 – The dominant performance in game 1 last year against the flames. Expectations were sky high and they proceed to shut the flames out. Talbot was fantastic and McDavid with a hattie including that crazy speed and power goal down the right side with a roof job. – Original Pouzar

A SIGN OF GREAT THINGS TO COME

2005 – It had been 17 or 18 months since I had seen the Oilers play (due to the lockout) and it was the first time in my life the Oilers had ADDED some star power to their team (Pronger and Peca). The team didn’t disappoint either as Horcoff scored a goal late in the third to give them a 4-3 victory over the Avs. Little did I know, it was a sign of great things to come that season. – Ryan Robinson

NOT A SEASON OPENER BUT A MESS OF A HOME OPENER

1979 – For Mark Messier, his first career goal and point was an unexpected moment in the spotlight, but he took to it rather well. By the time his career wound down a quarter century later, he had passed the greatest Red Wing of them all, “Mister Hockey” Gordie Howe, to rank second all-time on the NHL career scoring list, where he remains the only player to be within 1000 points of the incomparable Wayne Gretzky. Turns out the two youngest players on that Oiler team — and indeed, in the entire NHL — were both bound for what Peter Gzowski called “the pantheon” of greatness. For this hockey-starved young fan and thousands of others in the Coliseum that night, it was the start of a wild and unforgettable ride. – Bruce McCurdy

I Have a Problem With What Bob McKenzie Said About the Oilers

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

Yesterday, the Bobfather (Bob McKenzie) released his 2018/19 Edmonton Oilers season preview podcast and within it, he made some pretty lofty claims. Claims that I think are off-base. So I’m going to pull a few quotes from McKenzie’s podcast and comment on them.

The podcast I’ll put at the end of the post for your reference.

Before we do that though I want to preface this post by saying I’ve got nothing against McKenzie and what I’m about to say is no slight against him. He’s one of my favorite insiders and when he speaks, we should listen, for the most part.

But sometimes, and I feel like this is happening more and more these days, we need to strip things away and really listen to what’s being said in order to make a proper judgment instead of just taking it at face value.

McKENZIE’S REFUTABLE QUOTES

“The reality is that general manager Peter Chiarelli actively chose to not make a blockbuster move in the off-season.”

I guess making a massive trade every summer since he took over has become boring for Chiarelli. One might even say that doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result might have you found insane but to each his own.

“It is the same basic group that fell on its face last season”

McKenzie did mention the Oilers signing Koskinen, Brodziak, and Rieder before this quote on the pod and he’s not wrong. It is the same. basic. group. But isn’t that putting it a bit too plainly?

The missing, and most important, key in my mind is that this team is coming back healthy, with a chip on its shoulder, a year older and more developed both physically and mentally.

So on paper, the roster seems like it’s the same one from last year but it really isn’t, is it? Oh! And don’t forget about the new coaching hires. Quaint that McKenzie didn’t talk much about those…

“I think the way most people look at it, every year you have a Connor McDavid-led team that misses the playoffs, that is a crime against hockey humanity.”

He’s not wrong but it’s a pretty heavy shot at Peter Chiarelli. I’d like to read some of McKenzie’s thoughts on how the Pittsburgh Penguins handled Mario Lemieux in his first four seasons in the NHL. Was it a crime against hockey humanity that the Penguins weren’t making the playoffs from 1984-1988 even though Lemieux was putting up an average of 129 pts a season?

I bet you it wasn’t.

Another thing to consider is Bob McKenzie’s relationship with the McDavids. What is it? Are they close? Do you know any other hockey insiders that have dedicated an entire chapter of their book to McDavid and why does he seem to know so much about Connor’s journey to the NHL but not John Tavares’? Or did he choose to use McDavid’s over Tavares’ or Ekblad’s in the chapter about being granted exceptional player status in the CHL

Is McKenzie just looking out for a friend by throwing some shade on Chiarelli? Is he out of line suggesting Chiarelli is doing such a disservice to hockey humanity without considering the plethora of mitigating circumstances that may or may not have been the cause of another playoff-less year of hockey for the Oilers?

“…some might argue anybody would put up decent numbers beside Connor McDavid.”

Well, last year’s MVP couldn’t do it and Jordan Eberle was traded partly because he couldn’t do it either.

“I think the Oilers stopped trying to think of him (Strome) as the replacement goal scorer for the departed Eberle, which originally was how it was billed.”

See this is flat out not true. It was not billed as that at all.

Bruce McCurdy did a write-up on the media avail Peter Chiarelli did right after the trade and not once did Chiarelli ever say that Ryan Strome was bring brought in to replace Jordan Eberle’s goals.

Here are a few of the quotes from McCurdy’s post,

On the rationale for the trade: A function of a number of different things. 1) a chance to acquire a player like Ryan Strome. 2) No secret we have to clear up some space to sign both Connor and Leon.

On Ryan Strome: Ryan hasn’t put the numbers up like Jordan, but he’s got some things to his game that will help us in our division. He’s got good size, he’s got a terrific wrist shot — I scouted him for a long time for the U-24 team —  a very very cerebral player, he can play centre or the wing, very good on the half wall. These are all some of the things that Jordan has, but when we can save cap space we have to do it. That’s the reality of building a team these days. It was a good fit hockey perspective, and a good fit from a team-building & cap perspective.

On why Eberle didn’t click with McDavid: I don’t know. He certainly thinks and mvoes the puck quickly. He was a 20-plus goal scorer, he still is and will be. He might have been with Connor this coming year if he was still around. There’s reasons we trade players, fair enough, but this is about cap management, this is about replacing good players for good players, and this is about long-term thinking.

I’m not sure why McKenzie said that the Oilers were thinking that Strome was going to come in a replace Eberle because obviously from the Chiarelli quotes above, that’s false. Did they hope Strome could come in a score at an Eberle-like pace, I’m sure they did but that trade was 100% cap management.

Lastly, the Lucic quote…

“Can Milan Lucic rebound from an abysmal season that was punctuated by him asking for a trade, one which he didn’t get.”

This is the first time that Bob McKenzie has commented on this and I’m sure that’s because Jason Gregor brought it up after the Bobfather went on holidays but he’s been back for a few days now and if it was THAT big of a deal, we would’ve heard more.

If you want a detailed timeline of the Lucic rumor rollercoaster from the beginning of June until the beginning of July, David Staples did one here.

Insiders often talk to agents and pro scouts to get their info if GMs aren’t being cooperative and Lucic’s agent, Gerry Johansson, said on Oilers Now that he never had “that” conversation with Chiarelli BUT maybe he had it with Milan.

It’s obvious that that conversation was ended quickly because maybe his agent wasn’t interested in being embarrassed by the client.

“Stauffer said representatives from Lucic’s agency have made it clear Lucic has got to look to himself and do better.”

This quote from a Jim Matheson article where he interviewed Johansson,

“Milan didn’t ask for a trade and Peter (GM Chiarelli) 100 per cent has not come to us about moving Milan. If he wants to get out from under the contract, he has to talk to us.”

Somebody is fibbing. Chiarelli did the ol’ “no comment” when asked, so he left everybody hanging with that non-answer yet Johansson said no trade request was made and McKenzie says there was.

Friedman has never said that Lucic requested a trade out of Edmonton, only that he’d heard rumors of a request (that were denied), that Lucic wanted out of Canada, and that Lucic’s name had come up.

Frank Seravalli has only commented that the situation is “almost untenable” and that the Oilers were doing their “due diligence” on a possible move.

So from what I’ve found, and there could be more out there that I’ve missed, let’s establish that, Bob McKenzie is the only one that has said Milan Lucic requested a trade. Everybody else has just hinted at the possibility (including myself).

A new season means a new design! Click the image above to get the new Pulju shirt!

I get that hockey fans, famous or not, would look at the Oilers under Chiarelli and McLellan and lead by Connor McDavid would be frustrated but there is this overwhelming consensus that just because the Oilers have McDavid, it’s going to be a slam dunk that they make the playoffs every year regardless of what happens to the team on the ice or off of it. That’s wrong.

There are 30 other NHL teams that have a chance to make the playoffs every year and we more or less know who those teams are by American Thanksgiving. Not that that marker is set in stone but it’s generally a good point to look at if you want to have an idea of how things are going but anything can happen at any time, right?

We must evaluate and re-evaluate our expectations for our favorite teams and players all of the time. Are we expecting too much or not enough and how do we find the middle ground that offers us the opportunity to enjoy the team and the game of hockey the most? Folks like Bob McKenzie help us with that but I feel like a lot of pundits are butthurt over their predictions from a year ago and that they might be lashing out this time around.

Personally, I know that this is going to be a special season one way or another for the Oilers.

Santa’s Sock Drive

Summer’s over and you may have noticed it’s getting colder. As great as it is living in Edmonton, our winters are cold and unforgiving. While most of us are protected from the worst of it, there are always many that aren’t.

Santa’s Sock Drive is made up of a small group of volunteers that aims to try to help the underprivileged of our city that struggle to keep warm in winter. This is our third year doing the drive, last year we raised $3,076 and $923.26 the year before. The money we raise is used for buying things like toques, mittens, gloves, scarves, and socks to hand out. We also accept winter gear you may have at home, all we ask is that it’s clean and in good condition (no tears or stains).

Money can be donated via e-transfer to tejveer.sangha@gmail.com or through https://www.gofundme.com/santa039s-sock-drive-2018&rcid=r01-153660451446-bafc48a6b7874cab&pc=ot_co_campmgmt_w.

You can also drop winter supplies off or arrange a pick-up with tejveer.sangha@gmail.com or gurmanjit.sagoo@gmail.com.

We are going to be handing out the winter gear ourselves on October 8th (Thanksgiving). If you’d like to volunteer, email us. Everyone is welcome to come help out!

Around the Oilogosphere – April 15th Edition – Rattie Signs! 10 Things to Watch This Summer, Who’s Calling the Shots with the Oilers? NHL Rumors galore!

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

Have you been enjoying these Oilers-less playoffs so far? I know that it’s hard to watch this year when our team is out of it but I’ve been impressed with the Vegas/Los Angeles series so far and I’ve been having a helluva time watching Tampa manhandle Hall’s devils.

Now, if you read my tweets you’d probably think I hate Taylor Hall. I don’t. I think that he’s a supreme talent and very entertaining to watch, I just don’t want to see his teams win. And I think that goes the same for Jordan Eberle and the Isles even though they could possibly be the most exciting team in the league to watch (for now). It’s great that they are having individual success but I simply won’t be cheering for them to win and why should I?

See, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s less about the players and their teams and it’s more about the Oilers fans who bitch and moan every single day about the Oilers trading away Hall and Eberle and sh*t on their own team that they apparently love. I simply don’t get the crying over spilled milk aspect of Oilers fandom.

If Taylor Hall does win the Hart this year I hope he gives Devils’ goalie Keith Kincaid the majority of the credit because without Kincaid’s ridiculously good performances at the end of the regular season, Hall could’ve scored twice as much and the Devils wouldn’t have made it into the playoffs.

Did Todd Have a Hand in The Trades?

What if Todd McLellan had more to do with trading Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle that you think? Think about it. It wasn’t Chiarelli that moved Hall, Eberle, Yakupov, etc off of McDavid’s wing…

If that indeed was the case, that McLellan gave the green light on trading those players, would you still view him as the good ‘ol western Canada boy that takes responsibility for his team’s record?

*Side note: Just because you say you’re sorry and take responsibility for something doesn’t make it any less bad that it happened. We heard McLellan take responsibility so many times during the year that, for me at least, it lost its luster. That being said, I think he can pull things back together and I’m willing to give him that chance.

Front Office Clusterf*ck

I was listening to the Jason Gregor Show the other day and Jason Strudwick was talking about the recent Mark Spector article that ripped into the old Oilers and their “Red Wine Summits”. And he had a theory that that article was a message being sent by Peter Chiarelli to those above him to back off.

I can buy into what Strudwick is saying here. I think that in Boston Chiarelli had a huge problem with Neely, Sinden, and Sweeney trying to run his show which ultimately led to him dealing Tyler Seguin and I believe he tried to secure his power within the club by demanding he be the president of hockey operations and the general manager when he was brought on by the Oilers.

This will not end well, pro-Chiarelli and anti-Chiarelli fans can agree. If there is some sort of Royal Rumble going on within the power structure of the Oilers management/ownership/coaching staff, it’s only to get worse from here unless somebody goes because you can’t have a GM who’s been promised full autonomy in his contract being undermined by the coach and the cronies upstairs.

The Assistants

Speaking of coaches going places. Bob Stauffer pontificated recently on Jay Woodcroft being sent to Bakersfield to coach that team after they let Gerry Fleming go and there’s been lots of talk about Ian Herbers either going back to the University of Alberta to coach or to the AHL. Dean Millard, on Twitter, said that he got a DM from a man in the know that told him that Jim Johnson will be guy Todd McLellan chooses to sacrifice…

So that’s all three assistant coaches gone (possibly) which could lead the Oilers to hire a guy like Dave Tippett and/or Manny Viveiros and I think eventually that would allow the Oilers to move Tippett right into the head coaching role with Edmonton decided the time was right.

With Tippett, the Oilers would get a defense-first coach and that’s something I think the team needs. They’ve got to get away from trying to recreate the Oilers of the 80’s and create their own identity. And Manny Viveiros would run the PP (This past season he had the Swift Current Broncos PP running at a 29% clip).

There’s no guarantee that an excellent coach like Tippett would even consider an associate coaching position with the Oilers but we’ve seen it before with Lindy Ruff and Davis Payne.

This is a great article on Dave Tippett’s coaching style. Worthy of a few of your minutes in my opinion.

Oilers News

Edmonton Sun – Edmonton Oilers: 10 things to watch this off-season – What should we be watching up to the NHL draft, in free-agency and in training camp? Who’s going, who’s coming in? Here are 10 things to watch for before next season.

The Cult Of Hockey – Edmonton Oilers need a few value contracts, and they may have just signed one in Ty Rattie’s one-year extension -They are an essential aspect of the Salary Cap Era, where there are only so many “big dollars” to go around, and the cracks need to be filled with small ones.

The Cult Of Hockey – Coaching changes are imminent behind the Edmonton Oilers bench – I strongly believe that Todd McLellan will be back behind the bench, to begin 2018-19, but that the men standing in suits around him will look very different.

The Cult Of Hockey –  Palace intrigue at Oilers HQ grows over future of Todd McLellan and others – It looks like the Oilers will go down one of two roads, either getting rid of one or more assistant coaches or getting rid of Todd McLellan and all the asst. coaches presumably.

The Hockey Writers – Oilers Must Avoid Panic Move – Chiarelli’s trading track record is there for all to see and when we combine it with the pressure of the moment, the situation has “panic move” written all over it.

The Hockey Writers – Takeaways From Chiarelli’s Press Conference – Heading into the NHL Draft Lottery on Apr. 28, the Oilers hold the ninth-best odds and have a five percent chance of winning the lottery. Regardless, there are going to be fans clamoring for Chiarelli to be fired this summer. It’s not going to happen.

Oilersnation – Who is calling the shots? – We know that’s going to happen. What I’m wondering, regardless of who publicly pulls the trigger, is who is actually calling the shots?

Klefbom, Eberle, and More Oilers Rumours!

I’ve been sitting on a blog for a couple of days now waiting for the right time to publish it because new information keeps popping up. Add to that tonight’s game is quite important for the Oilers and the Islanders, both teams who most likely won’t make the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs but are a couple of the most exciting teams in the NHL.

OSCAR KLEFBOM

The other day on Lowetide’s show Woodguy talked about how you don’t deal off the top of the deck when referring to trading Oscar Klefbom. He said that Darnell Nurse is almost there with regards to being the top LHD on the team but not quite yet. Alex Thomas reminded us that defensemen don’t develop in straight lines when he talked about Nurse and trading Klefbom here. I’d argue that Nurse’s developmental path has been pretty straight though.

But the best argument I found in this discussion came from David Staples because he talked about both sides of the coin.

Then you’ve got the bloggers who are running around crying bloody murder before a trade even happens!

Why would the Oilers let Klefbom play if he’s injured? More on that below but to add to that, perhaps they’re not worried about him playing for the Oilers next season and the team’s talking to Edmonton (Tampa before McDonagh was acquired and Boston) aren’t worried about it either.

Every wondered why Klefbom didn’t get a clause in his new contract?…

So, here’s the deal with Klefbom. He can shoot but he’s always injured. Bob Stauffer talked about him even dealing with something during last year’s amazing run. He hasn’t spent ONE season in his professional career (or amateur one) healthy. He’s playing through an upper-body ailment this year that doctors reckon won’t get worse if he plays with it. So the Oilers are sticking him with needles and sending him out there.

This. Is. A. Problem.

Now, it wouldn’t be a problem IF he put up offense other places OR if he was a defensive stalwart.

4 PP goals in his ENTIRE career and we’ve got him pegged as the Oilers PP savior. That’s over 450 minutes played on the powerplay and he’s scoring a goal every 100 minutes-ish.

I’ve said in the past that Klefbom is the guy for the powerplay, so I’m just as guilty as everyone else who has believed that but 4 PP goals in nearly 4 seasons? That’s not acceptable at all.

He does own the #8 spot for shots on the powerplay this year for dmen with 49 but that’s not what the Oilers really need is it?

They need a guy who is a proven PP specialist which brings me to the next point.

Torey Krug is a player the Oilers have been watching. THIS is a player who produces with the man advantage (and 5×5). He makes $5.25M per year until 2019/20 and the final two years of that deal include a modified NTC. That screams out that he’ll be traded this summer.

There are ZERO question marks when it comes to Torey Krug and on-ice production and there’s a previous relationship with Chiarelli.

THAT is how you trade from the top of the deck.

JORDAN EBERLE

The day a person close to the Oilers from the Decade of Darkness and the Chiarelli-era writes a book is the day we’ll learn about all of the “off-the-record” trade requests…

Eberle said it himself, “It was just time for a change” and who can blame the guy? He’d been part of trade rumors for 3 or 4 years previous to last summer. Yakupov basically did it through his agent…

Now I’ve heard that Chiarelli wasn’t even looking at Strome when he was in talks with Garth Snow and that he was actually looking at a couple of defensemen on the Isles but Snow was having none of that and for these reasons:

  • Cap hit
  • Playoff performance
  • The risk of Eberle not bouncing back from a poor season

I can’t confirm who the dmen were that Chiarelli was asking about but my own feeling is that Calvin De Haan and Thomas Hickey might’ve been the ask. And that just seems crazy to me as the Oilers had enough left-handers as it was… Why ask for more?

RANDOM THOUGHTS

  • How different would things have been had Tambo given RNH, Hall, and Eberle proper contracts? Did Eberle and RNH really deserve $6M at that time? Did Hall?
  • Carolina is about to be open for business, so if there’s a RH’d defenseman a team wants, perhaps this summer is the time to get one. (*Cough* Faulk *Cough*)
  • If you’re one of those who believes the Old Boys Club in Edmonton has still got their hands in on things, I’m here to tell you that you’re right AND wrong.
    • MacTavish and Howson are scouts, so not much there but opinions on players. The guys you should keep an eye on are Paul Coffey (possible asst. coach next season) and minority owner Wayne Gretzky…
  • If there was ever a trade partner for the Oilers with regards to Milan Lucic, the Canucks would be at the front of the line.
  • Knowing the above, do you think that the Canucks would take a run at Pat Maroon?
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson talk is real. That’s another guy with a proven track record of offense… Dealing from the top of the deck 🙂
  • I wonder how long Bob Nicholson is for his current position and might he desire a return to the international hockey scene with the 2020 Winter Olympics coming up and question marks regarding NHL involvement.
  • The Oilers’ AHL coach seems like he’s on borrowed time. I guess Chiarelli has had to make some “visits” to Bakersfield to “ask” the coach to play the younger players more…

Speaking of coaching…

I’ve heard from two completely different sources that there’s a problem in the room and it’s got nothing to do with the players…

Perhaps Todd has lost the dressing room? Is that an indictment on the players and their character or is it just a sign of the times? Does that speak poorly to Connor McDavid’s leadership? What does it say for the veterans on the team?

Would the Oilers be better off under Joel Quenneville or Barry Trotz? Could we see Paul Coffey behind the bench or in the coach’s box above the ice next season? Is Ian Herbers going to get a promotion?

Why hasn’t Todd McLellan been able to do better with this team? I can only think back to the days where Dave Tippett was coaching Phoenix… Those rosters were questionable at best and got a helluva lot more out of them.

The Oilers first round pick is in play if it lands outside of the top 3
