Possible New Oilers Rumor and How Watching the Oilers Literally Made Me Sick

The title is not a reflection upon how the Oilers played in game one of their 2018/19 campaign but a soft actuality of what happened. Although their performance was pretty shitty if we’re being honest.

The rumors are at the bottom if you want to skip there 🙂

I actually did get sick after that game, how whether it was because there’s a bug going around that my daughter and wife caught and passed it on to me or the Oilers lack of that invigorated spirit we’ve been hearing the captain refer to all pre-season, I’ll leave that up for debate but if I’m going to be bedridden and painting the toilet bowl a new color every time they lose, I’m better off reading Matt Henderson’s blogs 82 times this year.

Since that uneventful match in Sweden, the knives have been out for nearly everyone who isn’t named McDavid and Lucic and who can blame the fans for being pissed off about that game’s result?

I can’t,

I saw a lifeless team with no energy. A team that couldn’t figure out that their opposition’s goalie was pretty good at handling the puck. Every time the Oilers dumped the puck into NJ’s zone, Kincaid would stop it and ring it back the other way, stifling the Oilers zone entry. After a while, NJ’s defense knew what Edmonton was going to do and were already turned around anticipating the dump in…

You’d have to think that the coaches (or the players for that matter) would’ve noticed this and notified the players. I mean, that’s what good coaches would do, right?

I also noticed an Oilers team getting hemmed into their own zone and not being able to get the puck out.

Now, for me in that instance, I feel that it’s acceptable to risk an icing call and just do whatever it takes to relieve the pressure for whatever amount of time that play gives you. Sure, you relinquish possession but that beats getting your ass skated around in your own zone, no?

I don’t feel that a zone exit has to be under control 100% of the time, just as I feel a zone entry doesn’t have to be controlled 100% of the time. Both will give you better odds at a shot attempt but when you’re gassed you’ll make more mistakes, that’s a guarantee.

Cam Talbot… I’m not sure if I should be mad at the guy or feel sorry for him. He let the first shot of the game in again… FFS! How infuriating is that?! On the plus, the Oilers bounced right back with a PP goal. To me, I like that they were able to put the past in the past and move on. But then there was that brain fart behind the net with Bouchard, Russell, and Talbot… What can you say?

That said, I can’t be sure if there’s a correlation between the talent level of a goalie and the amount of shot-blocking his team does but letting in the first shot of the game has to stop. For the good of the goalie and the psyche of the team.

Milan Lucic was the best player in that game in my opinion. Yes, Connor was flying around as usual but I found that NJ quieted him down a bit whereas Lucic was banging and crashing all over. He was making great passes and his 2pts tell me his head was in the right place.

How many points did last year’s MVP have? I guess he’s lucky Keith Kincaid was there to bail him out again 🙂

A new season means a new design! Click the image above to get the new Pulju shirt!

Near the end of the 2nd, McLellan threw out Draisait, Lucic, and Puljujarvi for a shift and WHAMMO! A scoring chance!

One scoring chance might not mean much but the Oilers had gone 17 minutes in that 2nd frame without a shot on net and they were getting their asses handed to them in the “compete” department… So yes, even something as measly as a single scoring chance got be very excited.

I was so happy and it really re-energized me for the 3rd period until I saw the 2nd line’s next shift and Yamamoto was back up there. Nothing against the rookie but he was doing fack all up to that point. Jesse should’ve, and still should be, lining up with Leon and Milan.

Shouldn’t Puljujarvi and Yamamoto be switched? I mean Jesse has two years of pro experience, three if you count SM-Liiga. Yamamoto has 9 games… You’d think that’d mean Kailer gets the start on the 3rd line where the pressure isn’t as great. A place where he’d probably have a greater chance of success, no?

Now, if you don’t agree, let me point this out to you. Andrei Svechnikov is playing on the 4th line in Carolina… The 2nd overall pick from this year’s draft is a 4th liner on THAT Carolina team and he’s playing at a point per game. 18 years old…

I can see why the coaches like Yamamoto’s skillset on that line. He’s shifty, tenacious, gritty, and he disrupts things but what I’m trying to say here is that if Jesse hasn’t “earned” that spot on the 2nd line and Yamamoto has, what does that tell you about the evaluators?

And personally, if you want a player on Leon’s line who can forecheck, you’d want Puljujarvi out there because he’s the best on the team at it. Not only is he good at tracking the puck but he’s strong enough to hold onto it…

Alas, it’s game one. I bet for most of the folks who read this they don’t remember the season-opening losses from 1987 and 1988. Or should we pretend like the result from the first game of the season will have a direct impact on the rest of the year for the Oilers?

I read in Grant Fuhr’s book that he lost his first game to the Winnipeg Jets but then went

Click the image and pick up your copy today!

on an undefeated streak of 25 games after that. What if they’d quit on him then or after his first trip to Maple Leaf Gardens, a 7-1 loss.

A young Grant Fuhr learned the hard way how one should react to a loss and now we hear stories about how nonchalant he became.

Here is a quote from his book where he speaks to how he felt after that first game loss to the Jets,

It was a mixed feeling after the game. One, you’re disappointed, but two, you’re just happy to have played your first game in the NHL. So it’s six of one, half dozen of the other . source

It be only one game and not a team in the history of the NHL has won the Stanley Cup or have been eliminated from the playoffs after game one.

THE RUMORS

Yesterday Bob Stauffer brought up Pat Maroon’s name on Oilers Now and has this to say about the ex-Oilers,

I mean a year ago at this time I remember Frank Seravalli, who we both know well, put out a piece on the top lines in the NHL and the no.1 ranked line at the start of the season was McDavid with Draisaitl and Maroon.

And you know how well Maroon played against Boston over the last two years. Obviously Maroon’s gone… For now… Remember he’s on a one year deal with St.Louis. Stranger things have happened…

Can you see Maroon coming back? It’s a tough scenario for me to envision with Lucic and Khaira occupying left wing on the 2nd and 3rd lines. Maybe Lucic gets moved?

I also thought that the conversation between him and Haggerty about Matt Grzelyck was interesting as Bob had talked about him recently.

Haggerty said about Grzelyck,

The way Grzelyck can go back into the corners, retrieve the puck and so quickly spin and go north and just get it out of the zone is so valuable and he’s so good at it. He’s got such good instincts for that part of the game.

Man, doesn’t sound like exactly the kind of player the Oilers were missing versus New Jersey? Maybe once Torey Krug returns from the IR Grzelyck could be moved…

Eklund has it up on his site that the Habs and Sabres are looking at Nurse… AAAAALLLLL-righty then! I hope you didn’t choke on your breakfast reading that… I nearly did.

Around the Oilogosphere: March 21st Edition – Oilers Trades! Oilers Signings! 5 Replacements for Peter Chiarelli!

Click the pic above to check out our merch!

So we’re switching things up with our “Around the Oilogosphere” segment. Instead of posting individual snippets and linking to them, we’re going to basically make a “Oilers blogs of the day” sort of post. Not sure if it’ll be daily or weekly but we’ll work that out. We’ll probably include some links from other NHL news as well like trade rumors or major happenings.

Either way, you can enjoy coming to one place to get all your Oilers links (minus the athletic ones because they’re behind a pay wall) and information.

Enjoy!

Oilersnation.ca – Here’s some great news for the Edmonton Oilers — the NHL’s salary cap ceiling is set to rise from $75 million to somewhere between $78 and $82 million for the 2018-19 season.

Oilersnation.ca – Looking ahead to the future it seems likely Oscar Klefbom and Darnell Nurse are the Oilers top-two left defencemen. So where does that leave Andrej Sekera and his $5.5 million cap hit?

Oilersnation.ca – This morning, the Oilers announced via their Twitter account that they have signed forward Ostap Safin to a three-year entry level contract.

Cult of Hockey – Remember the Patrick Maroon trade, when the Edmonton Oilers sent the Big Rig to join forces with Taylor Hall in Jersey for a pick and a prospect? As of today, that trade is effectively for two prospects, as the Oilers sent Jersey’s third-rounder in the 2019 draft to Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for college centre Cooper Marody.

The Hockey Writers – The pitchforks and torches are out. It’s easy to question the abilities of Edmonton Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli. Fans are upset with his asset management and misappropriation of funds under the salary cap. Then there are the trades that have blown up in the Oilers’ face.

Klefbom, Eberle, and More Oilers Rumours!

I’ve been sitting on a blog for a couple of days now waiting for the right time to publish it because new information keeps popping up. Add to that tonight’s game is quite important for the Oilers and the Islanders, both teams who most likely won’t make the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs but are a couple of the most exciting teams in the NHL.

OSCAR KLEFBOM

The other day on Lowetide’s show Woodguy talked about how you don’t deal off the top of the deck when referring to trading Oscar Klefbom. He said that Darnell Nurse is almost there with regards to being the top LHD on the team but not quite yet. Alex Thomas reminded us that defensemen don’t develop in straight lines when he talked about Nurse and trading Klefbom here. I’d argue that Nurse’s developmental path has been pretty straight though.

But the best argument I found in this discussion came from David Staples because he talked about both sides of the coin.

Then you’ve got the bloggers who are running around crying bloody murder before a trade even happens!

Why would the Oilers let Klefbom play if he’s injured? More on that below but to add to that, perhaps they’re not worried about him playing for the Oilers next season and the team’s talking to Edmonton (Tampa before McDonagh was acquired and Boston) aren’t worried about it either.

Every wondered why Klefbom didn’t get a clause in his new contract?…

So, here’s the deal with Klefbom. He can shoot but he’s always injured. Bob Stauffer talked about him even dealing with something during last year’s amazing run. He hasn’t spent ONE season in his professional career (or amateur one) healthy. He’s playing through an upper-body ailment this year that doctors reckon won’t get worse if he plays with it. So the Oilers are sticking him with needles and sending him out there.

This. Is. A. Problem.

Now, it wouldn’t be a problem IF he put up offense other places OR if he was a defensive stalwart.

4 PP goals in his ENTIRE career and we’ve got him pegged as the Oilers PP savior. That’s over 450 minutes played on the powerplay and he’s scoring a goal every 100 minutes-ish.

I’ve said in the past that Klefbom is the guy for the powerplay, so I’m just as guilty as everyone else who has believed that but 4 PP goals in nearly 4 seasons? That’s not acceptable at all.

He does own the #8 spot for shots on the powerplay this year for dmen with 49 but that’s not what the Oilers really need is it?

They need a guy who is a proven PP specialist which brings me to the next point.

Torey Krug is a player the Oilers have been watching. THIS is a player who produces with the man advantage (and 5×5). He makes $5.25M per year until 2019/20 and the final two years of that deal include a modified NTC. That screams out that he’ll be traded this summer.

There are ZERO question marks when it comes to Torey Krug and on-ice production and there’s a previous relationship with Chiarelli.

THAT is how you trade from the top of the deck.

JORDAN EBERLE

The day a person close to the Oilers from the Decade of Darkness and the Chiarelli-era writes a book is the day we’ll learn about all of the “off-the-record” trade requests…

Eberle said it himself, “It was just time for a change” and who can blame the guy? He’d been part of trade rumors for 3 or 4 years previous to last summer. Yakupov basically did it through his agent…

Now I’ve heard that Chiarelli wasn’t even looking at Strome when he was in talks with Garth Snow and that he was actually looking at a couple of defensemen on the Isles but Snow was having none of that and for these reasons:

  • Cap hit
  • Playoff performance
  • The risk of Eberle not bouncing back from a poor season

I can’t confirm who the dmen were that Chiarelli was asking about but my own feeling is that Calvin De Haan and Thomas Hickey might’ve been the ask. And that just seems crazy to me as the Oilers had enough left-handers as it was… Why ask for more?

RANDOM THOUGHTS

  • How different would things have been had Tambo given RNH, Hall, and Eberle proper contracts? Did Eberle and RNH really deserve $6M at that time? Did Hall?
  • Carolina is about to be open for business, so if there’s a RH’d defenseman a team wants, perhaps this summer is the time to get one. (*Cough* Faulk *Cough*)
  • If you’re one of those who believes the Old Boys Club in Edmonton has still got their hands in on things, I’m here to tell you that you’re right AND wrong.
    • MacTavish and Howson are scouts, so not much there but opinions on players. The guys you should keep an eye on are Paul Coffey (possible asst. coach next season) and minority owner Wayne Gretzky…
  • If there was ever a trade partner for the Oilers with regards to Milan Lucic, the Canucks would be at the front of the line.
  • Knowing the above, do you think that the Canucks would take a run at Pat Maroon?
  • Oliver Ekman-Larsson talk is real. That’s another guy with a proven track record of offense… Dealing from the top of the deck 🙂
  • I wonder how long Bob Nicholson is for his current position and might he desire a return to the international hockey scene with the 2020 Winter Olympics coming up and question marks regarding NHL involvement.
  • The Oilers’ AHL coach seems like he’s on borrowed time. I guess Chiarelli has had to make some “visits” to Bakersfield to “ask” the coach to play the younger players more…

Speaking of coaching…

I’ve heard from two completely different sources that there’s a problem in the room and it’s got nothing to do with the players…

Perhaps Todd has lost the dressing room? Is that an indictment on the players and their character or is it just a sign of the times? Does that speak poorly to Connor McDavid’s leadership? What does it say for the veterans on the team?

Would the Oilers be better off under Joel Quenneville or Barry Trotz? Could we see Paul Coffey behind the bench or in the coach’s box above the ice next season? Is Ian Herbers going to get a promotion?

Why hasn’t Todd McLellan been able to do better with this team? I can only think back to the days where Dave Tippett was coaching Phoenix… Those rosters were questionable at best and got a helluva lot more out of them.

The last comment on this blog will be thus:

The Oilers first round pick is in play if it lands outside of the top 3

2018 Oilers Trade Deadline Fallout

It’s over! It’s all over! The 2018 NHL Trade Deadline is over and f-me, as an Oilers fan, am I glad. Now we can finally go back to watching hockey like normal people. But boy is it going to be weird watching an Oilers team without Mark Letestu and Pat Maroon.

As everybody knew would happen, as soon as the Pat Maroon trade came in the Oilogosphere immediately went up in flames! Bloody Oilers fans eh?… lol

This is what happens when teams with uber deep prospect pools start whispers about upgrading. If you’re truly pissed off, blame the pundits because they are the ones that told us Jordan Kyrou or Taylor Raddysh could be used to acquire upgrades for their teams.

The reality of today’s NHL is that teams aren’t moving those high-end players as often anymore because they need them for their own club. Be that to help cushion the blow of a tight salary cap or simply for talent.

The NHL is getting younger and younger every year. So don’t expect too much out of the NHL draft either. The insiders will sell you on the idea that some big names are going to move in Dallas this summer at the draft but don’t believe them. Some guys will of course move because teams don’t have to worry about the salary cap during the summer and they’ll have that whole time up until the beginning of October to get their financials straight but I would say that TB and STL will be keeping their prized prospects.

THE TRADES

Pat Maroon to NJ for Joey Dudek+2019 3rd round pick

Everyone thought when the Grabner deal went down that the market was set for Patty but boy were they wrong. I even noticed some asking why Maroon didn’t bring back a 1st rounder or even a 2nd rounder. Well, to explain why here are a couple of tweets I sent out that should explain things clearly:

Peter Chiarelli said the market was tough. Well, you can’t say he was lying. You might say he could work on his negotiation tactics though :p

My Thoughts: Well I wanted to say that this was a clear loss but it’s not a clear one at all. The players that are comparable to Maroon only netted their teams marginal NHLers (Motte/Jokinen) or late round draft picks.

It’s my understanding that Maroon’s lower body injury played a part in the negotiations as well.

I’m going to give this a passing grade. It’s not a win but it’s not a loss either. Fact is, the Oilers traded a 3rd rounder and Martin Gernat to acquire the Big Rig AND they got ANH to retain salary. Now, they’ve dealt the UFA-to-be for a 3rd rounder and a prospect with speed and skill.

This Dudek kid is intriguing though. He’s a former 6th rounder (like Brandon Davidson).

Dudek has elite-level skill and skating. When he is on the attack, he is a team player first. He gets his teammates involved with good vision and decision making with the puck. He needs to get stronger and quicker on the ice, but he has shown in the past his commitment to becoming a better overall hockey player. – Hockey’s Future (source)

Here’s Dudek’s profile over at sbncollegehockey.com

I fully expect the Oilers to re-visit Pat Maroon’s agent this summer and for the Oilers to offer him a contract.

Mark Letestu to Nashville for Pontus Aberg

Letestu has no intentions of coming back to Edmonton this summer and the Oilers need speed and skill from the wings.

Pontus Aberg fits the bill perfectly in terms of what Chiarelli was looking for at the deadline this year and the Oilers needed a real human, not a pick, to put into the lineup for the rest of the year.

I’ve heard that Aberg has the Linus Omark skill but with a much better attitude.

My Thoughts: Straight out win for the Oilers here. Letestu is a UFA and even if Aberg doesn’t pan out, they get to give the Swede a test-run and he’s cheap. I think a shade under 700k if I’m not mistaken. I’m not exactly sure of his waiver eligibility though. If he is okay to go to the minors, that would make this trade even better.

Brandon Davidson to the Islanders for a 3rd round pick in 2019

I hated to see Davy go because I loved his attitude on the ice. He was a tough customer out there and gave it 100%. He didn’t bring much offense to the game mind you but he was a solid bottom pairing defender on this 2nd go-round with the Oilers

My Thoughts: Anytime you can turn a waiver pick up into a 3rd rounder, you do it. This is a clear win for Chiarelli.

Could we have used Davidson next year? I think so but I think he needs to be qualified at $1.6M and that’s too much for a no.6/7 dman I guess.

So at the end of the weekend, the Oilers lose three roster players and add 1 back. They add two more picks to their stable for 2019 which is good because that supposed to be an insane draft. That said, Chiarelli told us that he would like to use those picks to acquire young prospects who are near NHL-ready.

So we’ll have to wait and see what he does with those picks IF he gets the chance.

The Oilers lost three good men at the deadline this year. Players that are your glue and character in the dressing room. Maroon and Letestu were the buffers between the coaches and the players. Now we’re going to see what this group is made of and for me, as long as they show me effort and score some goals, that’s all I can ask for.

Give me effort and give me goals.

RANDOM NOTES

  • Be wary of the upcoming NCAA playoffs starting this week. Some NCAA free agents will become available this weekend and I expect the Oilers to be in on some. Max Veronneau is one to keep an eye on.
  • Those expecting Milan Lucic to start losing all of that cherry TOI now that the deadline is over are going to be disappointed. McLellan will definitely ride that guy until he’s off the schneid. He’ll be McDavid’s partner until then.
  • Jordan Eberle had 13 goals at this time last year. Ryan Strome has 12… Weird.
  • Mike Cammalleri wasn’t being shopped despite playing top-6 minutes. I wonder if the Oilers bring him back for next season?
  • Don’t be surprised if the Klefbom/Krug rumor start to pick up as we get closer to the draft. The Oilers need a PP specialist and Krug is exactly that!
  • Lastly, the best deal is sometimes the trade you don’t make. If you’re feeling down about the deadline just think, the Oilers still have Nurse, RNH, Klefbom, Slepyshev, Puljujarvi, Yamamoto, etc. The future is bright!

Oilers Live Podcast, Davidson Trade Part Deux, and Today’s Latest Trade Speculation

A few nights ago I was on the Oilers Live Podcast with Sean from theoilknight.ca and we talked about a plethora of things including:

  • the Oilers to date and why they are where they are and who’s to blame.
  • Their developmental system (or lack thereof)
  • Erik Karlsson and where he might end up
  • Pat Maroon and the recent rumors on his destination including one city nobody has thought of yet.
  • All the latest Oilers trade speculation.

You should head over to Mike’s website and also subscribe to his podcast as every week he’s got either a handful of Oilers die hard fans being interviewed or bloggers/journalists who cover other NHL teams. His latest before the one I was on was with former Edmonton Oiler Jason Strudwick and it was a beauty!

BRANDON DAVIDSON TRADED AGAIN!

So far Brandon Davidson has been an excellent source of “income” for Peter Chiarelli. Last year at the trade deadline Davidson was dealt for David Desharnais, who in turn provided the team with some excellent veteran leadership and a critical OT goal in the playoffs vs. San Jose and Now Chiarelli has acquired a 2019 3rd round pick for the defenseman from the New York Islanders.

I think it’s an awesome trade. Anytime you can turn a waiver wire acquisition into a 3rd round draft pick, you’re doing something right.

Would I have preferred to keep him? Hell yes! I really have enjoyed Davidson’s effort and impact on the team since being selected off of the waiver wire but I do understand that he’s a dman with value, he’ll never be anything more than a bottom pairing defender in the NHL, and that by dealing him Chiarelli opened up another roster spot on the 50-man list.

How do you think everyone else reacted to the deal?

https://twitter.com/tallltrees/status/967628051994460161

https://twitter.com/OilersWizard/status/967533897129984000

https://twitter.com/Oceanstormprint/status/967532434840469504

Those are the AGAINSTs. The way I see it, unless Davidson would’ve brought back a 1st rounder or a top pairing right-handed powerplay specialist, the trade was going to be a fail in their eyes anyhow.

Here are some FORs:

https://twitter.com/puckmarks/status/967487954103906304

Let’s look at some of the analytics bloggers Twitter opinions on the trade.

https://twitter.com/dellowhockey/status/967495873616891904

Lordy that is a lot of tweets. So, I think, as usual, the fanbase is divided on the deal.

Look, the Isles get a nice depth dman and the Oilers get another asset to which they could use, and Chiarelli said he would prefer to do this, to try and obtain a near-NHL ready prospect at the draft. Another thing he could do is use it to try and move up in the draft this year.

One more positive, the Oilers are 1-0 in the post-Davidson era 🙂

LATEST ON THE TRADE FRONT

I suspect now that Rick Nash is a Boston Bruin that Pat Maroon will be going to Tampa Bay. I mean I guess the Bruins could pick Maroon up to if they wanted to really go for it.

Who might the Lightning give up for the Big Rig? Who knows to be honest but here are a few names to let percolate in your head bone:

  • Vladimir Namestnikov
  • Anthony Cirelli
  • Matthew Peca

If I recall correctly, Winnipeg is in on Letestu and Maroon and you can add Mike Cammalleri to that list. Putting up 10 pts in the last 10 games tends to put you on the radar of other teams this time of year and if Davidson can bring a 3rd rounder, Plekanec can get the Habs some solid prospects, and Nash can bring in 4 pieces for the Rags, surely Maroon, Letestu, and Cammalleri will net the Oilers 1, if not two, acceptable young players who will have a chance to show what their worth down the stretch.

I’m hoping that Chiarelli clears some roster room up at this deadline too.

Winnipeg is in “win-now” mode more than ever right now. The iron is hot and they NEED to strike. But you know what? St.Louis is awfully quiet right now… The pundits are tossing Jake Allen’s name out there… Do the Oilers and Blues get together on a deal? It’d have to be a money in, money out type of deal though. St.Louis is right up against the cap at the moment.

You know what’s going to happen right? All three of those guys will head to teams that we never even thought of.. lol.

I was having a conversation with a buddy of mine at hockey last night and he suggested Josh Ho-Sang in return for that draft pick Davidson got the Oilers…
