Oilers Set to Make A Roster Move As Roster Freeze Thaws

Tough game for the Edmonton Oilers’ defense as they let the team down one too many times versus Winnipeg. But how about that McDavid/Draisaitl team-up on the shorty and the Puljujarvi goal! AMAZ-BALLS!!

On the other hand, Larsson and Davidson had their worst game as a pairing and the timing couldn’t be better if you can even say that.

Oscar Klefbom is set to return from the IR and with that, an Oilers defenseman is going to have to hit the waiver wire. Which Oilers dman you ask? I’ll go out on a limb and guess.

Eric Gryba

The big bearded grilling machine hasn’t had the best of years since signing his 2-year deal with the Oilers last summer and with the Oilers claiming Brandon Davidson off of waivers this month, Grybs is going to have to find employment elsewhere.

I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for players like Eric Gryba as he still plays that old-school hockey that I grew up watching. It’s too bad Mark Fayne lent him his skates this year though, had he been a bit more agile on the ice, he might’ve made it more of a challenge to sit him.

What might very well happen is a trade though because there’s simply no room for Gryba in Bakersfield. Since Ethan Bear has returned, Mark Fayne was loaned to Florida’s AHL team. I suppose Ryan Mantha or another player could be sent to the ECHL but that’s IF Gryba clears waivers.

Another option is Gryba being loaned out to another team like the aforementioned Mark Fayne. His contract isn’t that bad though at 900k and he’s only 29, so he may very well get claimed too. But now we wait and if he does end up leaving the Oilers, we’ll wish him a fond farewell and remember the good times.

I’m looking forward to Klefbom getting back into the lineup because I can’t remember a time since the ’06 Oilers where the Edmonton had this kind of spine.

All the players in blue are ones that were brought in by Peter Chiarelli… Yet, he still gets shit on… It’s a glorious thing to look at folks! And something we should feel very lucky to have as Oiler fans.

As for any trade rumors, I think the Oilers are OUT on Mike Hoffman, the price is too high at the moment and with the way that the team is playing, I reckon Chiarelli is happy to wait the Senators out.

Below is a BLH Youtube clip on the Kris Letang rumor. The Oilers aren’t in on him at all. The price for Hoffman is high but Letang’s is right up there too.

Stauffer is saying he thinks a winger is coming, the insiders are saying a defenseman, I’ve heard a goalie… If I were you, I’d just sit back and let all of the noise clear out before making a guess as to what the Oilers are going to do here.

The Oilers have a really key homestand coming up where they play Chicago, Los Angeles, Anaheim, and Winnipeg again. If they can manage 3 wins here, I think we’re in the money Oilers fans!!!

Kypreos Says Letang is Available, Should the Oilers Trade for the Defenseman Right Now?

Trying something a bit new with the BLH Youtube clips. Not sure if it’ll pan out or not but let me know what you think about this sort of format in the comments below!

As for the Letang bombshell, I’m actually kind of shocked that the Penguins would be willing to move one of their best defensemen to try and “shake things up”.

I’m not sure what Kypreos means when he says Letang is having a HORRIBLE year, he’s got 25pts in 37 games and is on pace for more than 50pts. He’s 9th in the league in D-scoring! -15 doesn’t help his cause but Burns is -13 and I don’t hear anybody saying he’s having a HORRIBLE season so far…

Letang hasn’t had the best run of seasons health-wise, I’ll concede that but when Kris Letang is on his game, WOWZAS! He’s a beauty. Offensively or defensively, he’s a dynamo on the back end. He can pass, shoot, skate, transition the puck, and even play physical if need be. He’s seriously one of the most powerful skaters I’ve ever seen. The guy is a beast!

Before I get into the Oilers looking at Letang, I wonder if the Senators would do a deal that centered around Letang and Karlsson? Sens get some security and a slight downgrade in talent and the Penguins get that supernova for their blue line…

I love Kris Letang and every ounce of my being is telling me that the Oilers SHOULD try and acquire the right-shooting dman out of the Steel City. He’s exactly the sort of player that Edmonton has been clamoring for.

Having Letang on the roster would really give the Oilers’ defense a sense of completion, wouldn’t it?

Klefbom/Letang
Nurse/Larsson
Sekera/Russell
Benning

But my problem with the Oilers trading for him is giving the Penguins what they want and according to Friedman, that’s a centre and a winger. Both being high-impact players. To me, that spells N-U-G-E for sure and if RNH is indeed the major piece coming from Edmonton, I think they could get away with tossing in a Strome or a Slepyshev.

That kind of trade would cripple the mojo that the Oilers are currently running on in my opinion. If they want to do that in the off-season, I’d probably support it more then but definitely not now.

I love the way the team is running now. Unicorns were once thought of as a pipe dream but now that the Oilers have three scoring lines, the rest of the league are having major issues dealing with the wave-after-wave-after-wave of attack and even the 4th line is getting in on it too.

If the Pens have taught us anything recently, it’s that you don’t necessarily need an all-star cast on the blue line to win a Stanley Cup, just a few ridiculously talented forwards and a supporting cast that has completely bought in, and legendary goaltending. Not too much to ask right?

That being said, if the price for Letang were say, Oscar Klefbom or Andrej Sekera plus picks and prospects, THAT I could get in on. But is that a trade the Penguins would make? Pittsburgh GM Jim Rutherford did have Sekera on his team in Carolina before, so there’s that to consider but I think more importantly, how would this sort of trade affect the Oilers cap situation next season?

Letang makes $7.25M for four more seasons and he’s 30 years old right now. Oscar Klefbom is not even 25 years old, he’s contracted until 2022/23 at $4.167M per year. A difference of over $3M per season and a year of team control. Toss in Slepyshev and that difference in Salary comes down to around $2M.

Could the Oilers add a couple million dollars to the salary cap, especially if it’s going up to $80M or so?

I suppose that depends on what Nurse, Strome, Caggiula, Benning, and Davidson will be asking for this summer.

Nurse: A lot of folks are saying an Oscar Klefbom-like contract, I say not that much because he doesn’t bring Oscar’s offense to the table… Yet. Under $4M for sure I say.

Strome: I’m not sure if he’ll ever get more than $2.5M unless he pulls a Josh Bailey-type year.

Caggiula: I think he signs a short-term deal for Strome-like money.

Benning: Not more than Nurse, that’s for sure. Under $3M I reckon.

Davidson: $2M max!

Does Letestu come back for another year? Do the Oilers re-sign Pat Maroon? How will Chiarelli address the backup situation? Brossoit makes 750k but he also plays like a goalie that makes that kind of salary too.

So let’s say Nurse is $3.95M, Strome is $2.5M, Caggiula takes $2.5M, Benning $2.75M, and Davidson $1.75M. Add in a goalie for $2M, and a centre to replace Letestu for $1.15M and we’ve got about $16M plus the adding of $2M from Letang’s trade.

I think some are asking about Maroon’s replacement and I believe that’ll come internally be it Tyler Benson or Kailer Yamamoto or maybe even Maksimov or Laleggia.

That’s about $18M if my shotty math is correct. I f*cking hate maths.

According to Capfriendly.com, at a $75M cap ceiling, the Oilers should have about $14M available before re-signing players and without any UFAs added. Toss $5M onto that if the cap ceiling goes up to $80M and Chiarelli could very well make a deal for Kris Letang without blowing up the roster but I simply do not believe that the Penguins would accept such a trade.

Now, I could’ve done that math completely wrong and I’m a little afraid that I’ve done just that or that I’m completely missing something. So if you’d be so kind, let me know in the comments below where I’ve gone astray if I indeed have done so! I appreciate that!

But how about this D then?

Sekera(Klefbom)/Letang
Nurse/Larsson
Russell/Benning
Davidson

Now that I’ve gone on that little diatribe, the Oilers problem isn’t scoring or offense, in my opinion, it’s their special teams if we’re being honest here. Letang would definitely help on the PP but would he help improve the PK (at home)? I’d venture a guess as to the answer being yes.

I’d add that a trade for Pageau out of Ottawa would be huge for the Oilers right now too. But that cap… Man, that cap.

Thoughts on a Kris Letang trade for the Oilers? Throw ’em in the comments section!

BLH NHL Playoffs Weekly Recap Apr 24th-May 3rd

Ah round two of the NHL Playoffs have begun and we have some good series. I’ll be honest, I haven’t watched as much of the playoffs this year as I did last year. I think it’s because of it being crunch time at work (teaching gig!) and some weird times for some games. Still you have some really good match ups with the Blues vs the Stars (tied 1-1), Islanders and Lightning (tied 1-1) Sharks vs Predators (Sharks up 2-0, boo San Jose boo) and Penguins vs Capitals (Penguins up 2-1).

My Playoffs bracket has taken a severe beating: My Stanley Cup pick (The Ducks) are out. Only 4 teams I chose (The Stars, Lightning, Penguins and Capitals) advanced. Not winning any brackets this year, that’s for sure.

The Edmonton Oilers News

Like last week, all is quiet on the Oilers news front. There’s not too much going on.

Saturday, we had the draft lottery where I did a live blog during the lottery that saw the Maple Leafs win the first overall selection (which by the way, total shameless plug, but the Oilers Rig has a new look. It’s great. Check it out.)

The Oilers ended up finishing outside the top three, finishing fourth overall, moving two spots down. I strongly believe that the Oilers will be trading the 4th overall pick.  While it’s important to replenish the farm team (no real elite talent now that McDavid, Nurse and Draisaitl have graduated), it’s time to move towards a win-sooner-than-later model. It’s an attractive asset.

If they did keep it, I’d love for them to draft Pierre Luc Dubois. He was ranked 9th on our top ten prospect rankings here at BLH.

World Championships start soon. Connor McDavid, Taylor Hall and Cam Talbot represent Team Canada this go around. Of course, McDavid will be the biggest name worth following but Hall did play very well last year with Sidney Crosby and Jordan Eberle.

Also speaking of Connor McDavid: He’s in the second round of the NHL 17 Cover Vote!  You can vote as many times as you wish.

For obvious reasons, I’d love to have McDavid on the cover. The Sharks had a player on the Cover back on NHL 2001 with Owen Nolan. Tarasenko is a great player but the Blues had Pronger in 2000. Benn would be the first Star representative to grace the cover. No Edmonton Oiler (other than some Midnight release signings) has graced the cover. So vote away.

The NHL Playoffs News

The biggest stories coming out of the playoffs are the firing of two head coaches this week.

In Anaheim after their colossal let down of a first round, fired head coach Bruce Boudreau. Feel bad for Boudreau here: he was the scape goat and did get them to a conference final the year prior. The big guns like Perry and Getzlaf underachieved on an epic level. General Manager Bob Murray promises that there will be changes.

My likely guesses? Sami Vatanen is gone (I’m really interested in seeing the Oilers snag him. He’s a good second pairing option and a Power play Quarterback.) and possibly Frederik Andersen (an RFA, have Gibson behind him). Where will Boudreau go? I was thinking Ottawa but….

The Calgary Flames fired Bob Hartley. Hartley definitely had his detractors from Flames fans: the Flames were a poor possession team with Bob Hartley under the helm. It was a rough four years for Hartley there besides last season’s Jack Adams Victory and a playoff appearance.

I’d be scared if Calgary snagged Boudreau. That would be a very wise move.

Brooks Orpik was handed a three game suspension. It was a nasty, nasty hit. Clear, late hit, interference. Very easy decision.

He wasn’t the only player suspended. Kris Letang was given a one game suspension.

A Special Message

While this is a hockey blog and I just do a weekly recap, I cannot express my sincerest wishes to all those effected by the Fort McMurray fire that is taking place right now.

I don’t have anything for what’s coming up or some follow me on Twitter thing. There’s just far more important things going on.

I’m lucky. My dad and brother have worked up north multiple times. I may not be in the trades, but both of them are Ironworkers. They’ve gone up there months at a time. I can only imagine the families of loved ones who are trapped up there or without any place to go.

Or the ones who live there on a full time basis. People who are about to or have already, lost everything.

I am providing a Red Cross Link for donations. Keep them in your thoughts.
