Connor McDavid: Brightest Star in LA By Eric Friesen

Only in Hollywood could you see Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and pop star Justin Bieber play hockey together.

McDavid and Bieber were just two the participants in the 2017 NHL All-Star Celebrity Shootout that featured many of the biggest names from the hockey world and entertainment industry. The two Ontario-born products helped Team Gretzky, of course, coached by Wayne Gretzky, defeated Team Lemieux, coached by Mario Lemieux, 5-3 at the Staples Center on Saturday.

Academy Award-winning actor and massive hockey fan Cuba Gooding Jr. has been playing pick-up hockey in Los Angeles for more than 20 years and also played on Team Gretzky with McDavid. Gooding Jr., who regularly plays against other players with a limited hockey background, said how special it was to play with a superstar like McDavid.

“It was an honour to be on the ice [with McDavid],” Gooding Jr. told Oilers TV. “He’s the next generation. He has such poise. I know there’s a lot of players we say that about, but he really seems to have angel quality about him.

“There just something about his focus. I mean, the fact that he at the last minute said I want to skate in this game. I mean, that’s cool. That’s really cool.”

Already a great ambassador for the game at age 20, McDavid then quickly changed into his Oilers gear to got ready for the 2017 NHL SuperSkills Competition. McDavid won the Fastest Skater event with a time of 13.02 seconds and placed third in the Accuracy Shooting event, hitting four targets on six shots with a time of 15.64 seconds.

After blowing away Colorado Avalanche centre Nathan MacKinnon head-to-head in his first heat with the best time of the night, McDavid tried to make history by beating Detroit Red Wings centre Dylan Larkin‘s all-time mark of 13.172 set at last year’s All-Star Game in Nashville. McDavid fell just short of eclipsing Larkin’s record, however, the ‘skating start’ came with some controversy.

Larkin was able to gain momentum with a skating start in 2016, while McDavid started from a dead stop a few feet back of the red line. McDavid told the media after the event that he had asked for a skating start as well, but that request was turned down by officials.

“I was definitely aware [that Larkin had a skating start],” McDavid said in an interview with Oilers TV. “That’s why I wanted to try and see if I could get that, but no dice I guess.”

McDavid, who is only in his second NHL season, will have many more chances to break the record in his career. And while he doesn’t hold the crown in Fastest Skater event yet, there’s little doubt in hockey circles that McDavid is the fastest thing on ice.

Lord Thunderin’ Weber! The NHL’s Hardest Shooter Again?

Of course they’d put Thunder God Shea Weber last AND give him an extra shot in front of the home crowd to see if he could break the human Titan Zdeno Chara’s record (108.8mph)… He was THAT close to doing it too… Check it out below! Don’t worry about the preview if it’s not visible. The video works I assure you.

I was surprised guys like Dustin Byfuglien, Seguin and Aaron Ekblad didn’t have harder shots and equally shocked that Stamkos and Malkin had shots that were that hard. Maybe Stamkos not so much but still, 103mph is ridiculously awesome. Why doesn’t he score more? Maybe he should play more wing…

Participants/Results (from NHL.com):

East:

Aaron Ekblad, Florida Panthers / 93.4 MPH

Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins / 97.0 MPH

Steven Stamkos, Tampa Bay Lightning / 103.9 MPH

P.K. Subban, Montreal Canadiens / 102.3 MPH

West:

Dustin Byfuglien, Winnipeg Jets / 99.6 MPH

Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars / 95.0 MPH

John Scott / 95.9 MPH

Shea Weber, Nashville Predators / 108.1 MPH

The Fastest Skater in the NHL in 2016… Possibly Ever?

Now I didn’t think Mike Gartner’s all-time NHL record would be broken and I don’t know how everyone is so surprised that Dylan Larkin is the fastest skater. WATCH A RED WINGS GAME AND SEE THE KID PLAY!! Not that it’s breaking news now, but this kid can fly and he’s a huge reason why the Red Wings are in the position they are in at the moment. An NHL superstar in the making for sure and I can’t wait to see him line up with the plethora of future stars in the World Cup this summer.

The only guy that I can think that might be faster…

Maybe 2017 will be Connor’s…

Participants/Results (from NHL.com):

East:

Dylan Larkin, Detroit Red Wings / 12.894

Brandon Saad, Columbus Blue Jackets / 13.634

Erik Karlsson, Ottawa Senators / 14.630

Kris Letang, Pittsburgh Penguins / 14.081

West:

Roman Josi, Nashville Predators / 13.527

Matt Duchene, Colorado Avalanche / 14.026

Taylor Hall, Edmonton Oilers / 13.654

Dustin Byfuglien, Winnipeg Jets / 14.203

A little disappointed Hallsy wasn’t the fastest on his team but kudos to him regardless. Hope he can have a good one in the actual NHL All-Star game. Hat-Trick Hallsy sounds pretty good to me, you?

What did you think about Larkin’s performance? Let me know in the comments below.

BLH’s 2015/16 NHL All-Star Rosters

Will we see another Oiler phenom walk away with the All-Star Game MVP?

Well what a slow week it’s been here at BLH. With the site’s servers going all wonky and not a whole lot going on in the Oilogosphere worth writing about, weeks like this are bound to happen. But I think we should kick start your heart with a bit of NHL All-Star speculation!

Whilst the game isn’t until January 31st I still find it fun to pontificate on who might be selected to this year’s rosters and given the changes that will take place this year, it’s bound to be a ridiculously entertaining affair. A three-on-three tourney between the divisions with a million bucks on the line is just what the doctor ordered!

So the selection process goes as follows, fans will get to vote for each division’s captain. From there the NHL’s hockey operations department will fill out the rest of the roster. Every team must be represented.

Without further ado, let’s get stuck in!

ATLANTIC DIVISION

Jack Eichel simply hasn’t done enough to get an invite and I’m torn between Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk out of Detroit. A super longshot might be James Reimer because if he can continue to play like he is now, he most definitely should be on this roster. And yes, old man Jagr is going to make the cut!

METROPOLITAN DIVISION

  • Justin Faulk – Carolina Hurricanes
  • John Carlson – Washington Capitals
  • Kris Letang – Pittsburgh Penguins

No Crosby this year which will be kind of odd. Kuznetsov is having a breakout campaign as well. I took the most entertaining guy out of Columbus in Saad. I guess it couldn’t been any one of Johansen, Hartnell, Jenner or Saad but I think Saad would be more suited to the 3v3 format. If I had my way there wouldn’t be one New Jersey Devil or Carolina Hurricane on the team. They are simply no players good enough on either team for the All-Star game.

CENTRAL DIVISION

No Toews, Panarin, Keith or Crawford which is a shame. Dubnyk is quietly having another good season for Minnesota and just to rub it into Oilers fans and former management types… He’ll add All-Star to Vezina finalist since leaving Edmonton.

PACIFIC DIVISION

  • Jonathan Quick – Los Angeles Kings
  • Martin Jones – San Jose Sharks

That’s right! Connor McDavid will be an All-Star this season. The NHL has already lost mega bucks on this collar bone injury and you can be damned sure there not going to miss out on this opportunity. He’ll be back a few weeks prior to the event, so there’s no worries there. I only picked Getzlaf because I think he’s coming around and there’s nobody else on the Ducks I find worthy of playing in the annual game of shinny.

Do you like my selections? Who would you pick? Let me know in the comments below!

Have a great day!
