Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Are the Oilers on the Verge of Making a Three-Team Trade?

The Henrique/Oilers rumors are starting to really ramp up. Now insiders are talking about how the club could get a third team involved in order to get the cap hit down. On top of that, an ex-Oiler out in Seattle is quietly entering his name into the Oilers rumor mill. There’d be a lot of happy fans in Edmonton if he was acquired for one last run with his old team.

I should start prefacing these blogs with the fact that I write them a day in advance and because we’re getting so close to the deadline there’s a good chance I might write about a player or a team and it be old news by the time it gets to your beautiful eyes. If that happens, my apologies!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

Did You Hear the Oilers are Looking for Players with Stanley Cup Pedigree?

“So, it’s going to take a little bit of cap gymnastics, but I’ve heard the Oilers have at least enquired or had some conversations with the Ducks about Adam Henrique.” – David Pagnotta, The Fourth Period

  • I wonder if this ends up being a bigger trade than just Henrique IF it happens at all.
  • There are some out there of the belief that Edmonton could be in on Lyubushkin as well. He makes $2.75M/yr and is also a UFA at season’s end.
  • We’ll also forget about the fact that John Gibson would probably rather be playing for a contender, too.
  • Would you rather have Warren Foegele or Frank Vatrano?
Did Somebody Call for a Three-Team Trade?

“Let’s say as an example, you wanted to get in with Adam Henrique with the Anaheim Ducks. Henrique’s a $5.7 million cap hit, the Oilers can’t take that all on. They would need Anaheim to eat half of that salary, that leaves 2.85, well then maybe Minnesota takes on another $1.45 million in the cap space. The actual dollar amount with that would be about $350,000 that’s usually about a fifth or sixth round draft choice in terms of trade equity at the NHL trade deadline.” – Bob Stauffer, Oilers Now!

  • Imagine the Edmonton Oilers getting creative to make a hockey trade work? It’s not like other teams have been doing it for years already or anything…
  • If Bob’s going into the details of how a trade for a certain player could go down, there’s a good chance that the Oilers have chewed on this already. The addition of Michael Parkatti is already paying off.
  • What I’m wondering is that if Nic Dowd’s supposed price is a 1st rounder, how would Adam Henriques be any less? He’s producing more and he’s a better player. Different type, mind you, but still, he’s someone you can run all the way up to the first line IF you want.
  • If I had to guess, the Oilers will do their damnedest to not use a first rounder on a rental but perhaps use a former first rounder like Xavier Bourgault, Philip Broberg, or Dylan Holloway. Holland likes to use those firsts on players with term.
  • So would a 2nd in 2024 and Xavier Bourgault plus another mid-rounder in 2025 to get a third team involved work?
Bring Jordan Eberle Home!!!

“I have all the time in the world for Eberle. But he makes $5.5m. If you are clearing cap space for him, you do not have room for much else. And I am not sure his skill set (legitimate NHL scorer) is the Oilers top need.” – Kurt Leavins, Cult of Hockey

  • At some point, the Oilers big boys will get shut down in the playoffs and if the bottom six doesn’t show up, offense is going to go dry. Having an Eberle or a Henrique (or a Tarasenko) around would give the club that extra bit of scoring in the lineup that may just make it impossible to completely stop the scoring machine that is the 2023/24 Edmonton Oilers Ice Hockey Club.
  • I get it though. Eberle has lost a step now and if I’m being completely honest, I think I’d rather pay more to get a guy like David Perron out of Detroit if we’re in the mood to bring ex-Oilers back to town.
  • I mean, wouldn’t it be something if Perron came back and then they found a way to get Pat Maroon too? The fanbase would be besides themselves.
  • Day dreaming aside, they still need an upgrade at 4C. Be that Nic Dowd, Nico Sturm, Jake Evans, or (NEW NAME) 6’5″, 237lb, right-shot center Michael McCarron, Holland needs to address that position.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Will the Oilers One-Up the Jets and Canucks with this Trade?

The Oilers are scouting the Canadian University Ranks on the search for some serviceable youngsters who can come in next season because they’re about to empty their coffers as Ken Holland has one last gift before he rides off into the sunset.

But before we get to that, give us a follow on the socials!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

Oilers Scouting the University Ranks

“Canada West is a good league. These players are often good over-agers from junior who just did not get drafted. But they are mature, smart, and competitive. Guys like Eric Florchuk (a big, talented Center from Fort Saskatchewan who has been a point a game player in the WHL and CWUAA) and Jakin Smallwood (a good Leduc kid who played on a line with Conor Geekie in Winnipeg) are right in the Oilers back yard. If Edmonton is shipping draft capital out this Spring, they will have organizational slots to fill.” – Kurt Leavins, Cult of Hockey

  • Edmonton’s had some recent success plucking overagers out of the junior leagues with James Hamblin and right now there’s a kid named Cam Wright who’s playing well. Had the Philp kid not decided to retire, he’d probably be playing 4C for the Oilers right now.
  • I think last week or the week before that Bob Stauffer brought up Florchuk’s name. So you can take that as a very good indicator that the Oilers will try to sign him.
The “Cost” of Bringing In a Proven NHL Player

Pittsburgh acquires Justin Schultz from Edmonton for 2016 third round pick (Filip Berglund) – February 27, 2016

Boston acquires Dennis Seidenberg and Matt Bartkowski from Florida for Craig Weller, Byron Bitz and a 2010 second round pick (Alex Petrovic) – March 3, 2010

Colorado acquires Erik Johnson, Jay McClement and 2011 first round pick (Duncan Siemens) from St. Louis for Kevin Shattenkirk, Chris Stewart and 2011 second round pick (Ty Rattie) – February 19, 2011

St. Louis Blues acquire Jay Bouwmeester from Calgary for Reto Berra, Mark Cundari and a 2013 first round pick (Emile Poirier) – April 1, 2013

Tampa Bay acquires Ryan McDonagh and J.T. Miller from N.Y. Rangers for Vladislav Namestnikov, Brett Howden, Libor Hajek, a 2018 first round pick (Nils Lundkvist) and a 2019 second round pick (Karl Henriksson)” – Daily Faceoff

  • You can add one more trade to that, Edmonton acquires Mattias Ekholm from Nashville for Tyson Barrie, Reid Schaefer, a 2023 first round pick, and a 2024 4th round pick.
  • What’s a common denominator in all these deals? Sans the Oilers (yet), the teams acquiring the veteran dman went on to win the Stanley Cup.
  • The other commonality is that the prospects given up in the deals never became better than the best player in the deal, the feature defenseman.
  • So when we see rumors of the Oilers pilfering their youth to bring in veteran NHL players, we should think about the trades above.
Is This Ken Holland’s Going Away Gift to the Oilers?

“Now that the rival Canucks have made a bold move, how will the Edmonton Oilers respond? Maybe it’s too rich a price tag, and the Pittsburgh Penguins may decide not even to move him, but I love the idea of Jake Guentzel in an Oilers uniform.” – Pierre LeBrun, The Athletic

  • I’ve got a hard time believing the Oilers could stump up enough trade capital to bring in a rental and make no bones about it. He’d be a rental because he’s a UFA at season’s end and unless I’ve heard wrong, he’s already turned down an offer of $8.5M/yr in PIttsburgh. How would the Oilers be able to afford him if he’s looking for more than that?
  • That being said, if some miracle were to occur and Guentzel was willing to sign in Edmonton, how good would that top-six be?
  • What does this trade even look like? Holloway, Broberg, Foegele, 2024 and 2025 first rounds for Guentzel (50% retained)?

Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: Could Holland Add These Three Pieces at the Deadline?

Three more names are quietly finding their way into the Edmonton Oilers rumor market. A versatile two-way defenseman that the Oilers were seriously looking at last year at the deadline. A potential 1b goaltender that’s had his name connecting to Edmonton previously, as well as a heavy 4th line center who a lot of people have glossed over. Read on to find out who!

But before we get to that, give us a follow on the socials!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

One name they have recently been linked to is Ottawa Senators’ defenceman Jakob Chychrun. The Oilers have been strong defensively since Kris Knoblauch joined the team as the new head coach and show no signs of slowing down. If they look to add a big name to bolster their depth heading into the postseason, it wouldn’t be shocking to see them take a swing at Chychrun.” – The Hockey Writers

  • I didn’t expect to see this name in the Oilers rumor mill again but here we are. Chychrun, as far as I know, can play both sides of the ice and that would have to mean that Cody Ceci and probably Philip Broberg would be heading to Ottawa.
  • I think Ceci would be an upgrade over Bernard-Docker and Erik Brannstrom hasn’t had the best of times with the Sens. He’s an RFA this summer and I’m thinking that Ottawa could deal him at the deadline or walk away and that’d open up a spot for Broberg.
  • That said, I don’t know what the Senators want to do with big left-shot prospect Tyler Kleven and they’ve still got Travis Hamonic on the books… But for that club, would it hurt to have Ceci, Zub, and Hamonic down the right side with Chabot, Sanderson, and Broberg down the left?

“New reports say that Juuse Saros might be available out of Nashville for the right price. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild might be open to moving Marc-Andre Fleury if they find themselves out of the playoff mix. Even Mackenzie Blackwood out of San Jose potentially makes more sense for the Oilers. The point is, GM Ken Holland will have choices.” – NHL Trade Talk

  • “Picks and Skins” (as Jeff Jackson likes to call them) are both playing fantastically at the moment. I think PIckard’s running a .921 sv% during this heater and Skinner’s got one that’s over .930… They’re probably not touching the netminding unless it goes off the rails. Plus they’ve got Olie Rodrigue and Jack Campbell playing almost as good in Bakersfield. The internal options make this decision a little easier for Holland and Jackson.
  • I know I recently tossed out a proposal I saw on the NHL network that had the Oilers sending Philip Broberg to Minnesota for MAF (50% retained) and 99% of the folks that took the time to reply said now. Funny enough, all three analysts (Mike Rupp, Mike Barnett I think, and Kevin Weekes) all said yes to the deal.

“Nic Dowd is one of the best defensive bottom six guys in the league. The Alabama native is signed for another year at a nice $1.3M cap hit. Dowd, however, appears to be moreso of an elite 4C than a true 3C. As well, Derek Ryan is pretty similar in comparison and makes $400k less. Therefore, I don’t think Dowd would be a wise option at the deadline unless we have no other choice. The acquisition cost would be a third round pick or so.” – The Oilers Rig

  • I know the Rig had some fancy stats charts up that didn’t exactly show Dowd good offensively, but they did show him well defensively. Very well and for me, that’s who you’d like on your 4th line. It’s not out there to stack up the offense, it’s out there to keep the puck out of the net and eat the clock so that their team’s stars can rest up and get back out there.
  • Dowd for me is a good trade target. I reckon he’s a better option than Derek Ryan for 4C on this team.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors: SIX Forwards Being Linked to Edmonton

History tells us that Ken Holland will probably target a defenseman at the trade deadline considering that the Oilers are serious contenders for the Stanley Cup but according to local legend, Lowetide, Edmonton might stand pat there and address the forward group. Read on to see who the Edmonton Oilers could target to upgrade their already league-best offense.

But before we get to that, give us a follow on the socials!

The Latest Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors

“(Elias) Lindholm is the optimal addition at the deadline. Puck IQ informs us that Lindholm plays extreme minutes versus elites (45 percent of his overall five-on-five minutes) and owns a 45.6 percent Dangerous Fenwick against the best opposition.”

  • Lindholm’s playing on a very underwhelming Flames team. His fancies would most likely improve on a better team. But, he is the optimal addition as LT says. He’s a right-shot center with a 55% win-rate on the dot this year. He scores and he plays the game honestly but what’s the cost considering the Oilers would need to fit that $4.85M salary in?

“(Jake) Guentzel can play either wing, is a strong goal-scorer and has good speed. The cost would be dear, and it’s uncertain that the Penguins will trade him.”

  • I’m not convinced this is the kind of player Edmonton would go after. I think the cost would be too much and as much as he’d be an awesome addition, it all comes back to the cost. The Oilers don’t have the assets unless they want to part with Holloway, Broberg, and probably a roster player and a 1st rounder. I’m not doing that.

“(Vlad) Tarasenko has not delivered an impact offensive season since 2021-22 (34 goals with the St. Louis Blues) but could deliver a strong run with Leon Draisaitl as his centre.”

  • I’m of the same opinion. The Senators are garbage this year for some reason and him signing in Ottawa has be an abysmal failure. However, he’s not playing with a Connor McDavid or a Leon Draisaitl and if Edmonton is looking for a veteran with playoff experience and knows how to score, it’s Tarasenko. In 91 games he has 44 goals!!!

“(Adam) Henrique is a consistent player who is currently ripping it up for the Anaheim Ducks. His scoring rates at five-on-five have been quality for the last five seasons.”

  • I do not mind this player at this point in his career for the Oilers. At best he’s a middle-six forward but one that can hold his own offensively. He’s got the necessary regular season experience to help a Cup contending team too. You do wonder how well he’ll be able to hold up health-wise though. Since 2017-18, he’s only played more than 62 games twice. That said, this year he looks to be having a bit of a revival with 32pts in 48 games so far. There’s a chance he could hit career highs in multiple offensive metrics if he stays off the IR.

“(Sean) Monahan can play all three forward positions, is having a fine season in all areas and owns a cap hit under $2 million. He would be a solid complementary addition for the Oilers.”

  • I think this is a safe suggestion. It might cost Edmonton to get him though. He’s a well-sought after player this year and I think there are going to be a lot of top teams gunning for his services. His health history is concerning too.

“(Arthur) Kaliyev may be available and the Oilers should pursue him. Kaliyev is a one-dimensional player, but that dimension is goal-scoring.”

  • Nah… Not for a playoff run. I’d prefer to target a player with more experience and more dimensions, to be honest. Also, somebody with more versatility if they’re playing 4th line TOI.

If you ask me, out of these candidates, I like Tarasenko the best because of his experience and scoring rate during the post-season. I think the acquisition cost might be easier to swallow as well.

Personally, I feel like the Oilers need help on the 4th line

Monday Mailbag

How much value do you put into early season results? It seems like teams are up and down throughout October every year while they get themselves going.

  • “Games in October are worth the same two points as games in March are, so I put plenty of value in them.” – Brownlee
  • “These are the losses that end up mattering most down the line, it seems.” – Baggedmilk
  • “If the Oilers are getting smoked then yes we need to be concerned; however, when we get to March and they are comfortably in a playoff spot it won’t matter.” – Horrobin
  • “Goalies need to be better and Oilers need to score more 5×5.” – Gregor

BLH’s Thoughts: Has a team every missed out on the playoffs because they lost a game in October? Has a team won the Stanley Cup and they traced the whole campaign down to a coupe of wins around Halloween? Jesus Christ man…

Gregor spouted out some stats and then deflected. So his reply was pretty useless.

Horrobin is the guy who’s the closest here. It sucks when your team gets its ass kicked by another club who shouldn’t even be in the games but there’s no way in Sam’s salty sweet hell that we’re going to look back at these two losses at the end of the season and give them any credit for where the Oilers wind up in the standings.

Now, with that said, if the team goes 4-9-2 to start the year but is solid the rest of the campaign, then we can look back at the first FIFTEEN games of the year as a possible reason as to why they ended up where they did.

The best comment on these two losses by an Oiler was from Zach Hyman and he basically noted that every team loses a couple in a row during the year, so what. Calm the fack down.

RAGE IN THE CAGE
  • “I’m flummoxed about the rage in the cage over Dustin Schwartz. He got booed enough to notice on Saturday night during introductions. This despite the fact he had just coached a rookie goalie during a Calder Trophy nominated season.”
  • “I’ve said this before, but the Bouchard contract length (two years) tells me we’re counting down like Casey Kasem on a trade that involves Nurse or Bouchard. Summer of 2025 or sooner. Pretty sure.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Good point on the Calder trophy but poor form not knowing why Schwartz was getting booed. Remember when Mike Smith came to town with his own guy… That should’ve been all you needed to know about how netminders outside of Edmonton feel about the Oilers goalie coach. What about last year when there was talk about bringing in Jack Campbell’s old coach from LA and Toronto, Dusty Imoo?

If the PP goes to shit, we’re free to blame the PP coach. If the PK is no better than a dog’s breakfast, we point at the PK coach, right? So why can’t we question the quality of instruction being given to the goalie coach?

I swear, there’s not been a season since probably well before the Chiarelli days that an Oilers campaign hasn’t been marred with the fanbase calling for the head of the goalie coach. I mean, can they just give Sean Burke whatever he wants and let’s be done with all of this? Or better yet, just bring in an all-star goalie! Novel idea, I know… Another groundbreaking notion might be to do something about the construction of the defense…

LT reckons we’re counting down to a Nurse and/or Bouchard trade? That’s about the best news of the day.

Commentary

So… Lookie here. Jay Woodcroft is losing the plot TWO games into the season. Edmonton’s PRIZED summer signing has been demoted and Woody’s gone back to the well to reunite Connor and Leon. Sweet Jesus you’ve got to be kidding me. Even if this is just for a look-see, it’s telling and it tells me that one of the NHL’s best coaches, according to Oilersnation, is absolutely panicking with only a pair of games gone in the 23/24 season.

I mean, the next game is against Nashville and Leon always lights them up, but this is ridiculous. Foegele, Holloway, and McLeod were playing well. Why split that group up? I don’t see the point of shaking the lines up so early in the season if not for nothing more that sending a message. It’s amateur and if there is anybody that could add a bit of scoring to the top six, it’s Dylan Holloway! Demote Brown, promote Holloway…

Another interesting bonus is that after eight more games of Connor Brown, the Oilers will be on the hook for $4M next season… I can’t believe he’s yet to show up? He’s completely invisible out there and I think it’s fair to feel like Edmonton is getting ripped off here considering the pump-job the Oilers media gave him all summer.

It’ll be interesting who becomes Edmonton’s scapegoat now that Yamamoto and Puljujarvi are gone.
