NHL Rumors and Speculation

Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic) posted trade proposals for six contending teams not too long ago. Here’s some of the juicier tidbits from that article,

  • Mattias Ekholm to the Boston Bruins – “What’s a first-round pick and a prospect when you’re trying to max out Patrice Bergeron’s remaining time in the NHL and win another Stanley Cup? Could Jake DeBrusk be part of this deal? Ekholm remains a stud, top-four D. If you’re Sweeney, you owe it to your team to try to swing this.”
  • Eric Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes – “I know the Carolina brass recently discussed the merits of picking up the phone closer to the April 12 deadline if Staal was still on the Buffalo roster and seeing what it would take in a softer deal to get the pending UFA.”
  • Rickard Rakell to the Toronto Maple Leafs – “For me, that starts with the Leafs offering 2020 first-round pick Rodion Amirov and still, that probably wouldn’t be enough. Toronto would need another asset in the package.”
  • Alex Goligoski to the Philadelphia Flyers – “Not top of the list, but it’s one of those situations where if the Flyers strike out on other top-four targets, they could come calling to Arizona eventually.”
  • David Rittich to the Washington Capitals – “I think if there’s still any doubt at all closer to April 12 they go out and bring in some insurance in goal.”
  • Mattias Ekholm to the Winnipeg Jets – “I’ve heard some rumblings the Predators have chatted internally about 24-year-old Jets blueliner Sami Niku, who has struggled to become a mainstay in the Winnipeg lineup but remains a player with more ceiling. Would a first-round pick and Niku do the trick for Ekholm?”

Rob Ellis (nhltraderumor.com) reckons the Montreal Canadiens could include puck-moving defenseman Victor Mete in a trade for Nashville Predators defenseman Mattias Ekholm.

  • “The Habs could look at moving Victor Mete as part of a deal for Ekholm. Earlier in the season, it was reported that Mete’s agent Darren Ferris had talked to GM Marc Bergevin and told him, Mete would like to be moved to have an opportunity to play somewhere else.”

Larry Brooks of the NY Post: Wonders if the Rangers will move Russian winger Pavel Buchnevich before the trade deadline as he’s a pending RFA with arb rights. He’s also their leading scorer this season though… Brooks noted, if New York does choose to move on from Buchnevich that they could look at bringing in current Toronto Maple Leafs winger Zach Hyman as he’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this off-season.

Ben Pope of The Chicago Sun-Times has suggested that the Chicago Blackhawks may be open to adding “bad contracts” at this year’s NHL trade deadline given they $23M in cap space they’ll have at that time and the flat cap going forward.

According to Pierre LeBrun of TSN, the San Jose Sharks are expected to field trade calls on veteran goaltender Devan Dubnyk. Team’s expected to make offers include the Washington Capitals, Colorado Avalanche, Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes.

David Pagnotta (The Fourth Period) is reporting that the Detroit Red Wings are getting calls on hulking winger Anthony Mantha.

  • “According to multiple sources, the Red Wings are entertaining calls on winger Anthony Mantha, who is in the first year of a four-year, $22.8 million contract.”
  • “It’s unclear what type of return Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman would want for Mantha, or the type of trade he’d consider pulling the trigger on. Realistically, moving a player of his caliber is more likely to occur in the summer versus the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, but the right offer could compel Yzerman into making a move.”

Renaud Lavoie (TVA SPORTS): suggests Ottawa Senators defenseman Erik Gudbranson could be a good trade target for the Canadiens. He wouldn’t have to be quarantined for 14 days and would bring a measure of toughness and shot-blocking to their roster, “and he speaks French very, very well.”

Arthur Staple (The Athletic): Listed Buffalo’s Taylor Hall, New Jersey’s Kyle Palmieri and Columbus’ Nick Foligno among the pending UFA forwards of his suggested trade targets for the New York Islanders to replace sidelined captain Anders Lee. The Isles recently place Lee on long-term injury reserve, allowing them to exceed the salary cap by the equivalent of his $7 million annual average value.

(3/16/21) BLH’s NHL Trade Rumors: Hall to the Oilers? Gaudreau to the Maple Leafs?

NHL Rumors and Speculation

Eric Duhatschek (The Athletic) recently listed off ten teams that MUST make a trade by the April 12th trade deadline this year. Here are some of the more interesting snippets of what he said in that article,

  • Buffalo Sabres – “Maybe the most intriguing player on the Sabres outside of Eichel is defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen, 26, with this year and next left on a contract that pays him $5.4 million.”
  • Nashville Predators – “The Predators also have a long list of reasonable rentals (Granlund, Haula, Richardson) or players with reasonable term (Cousins, Borowiecki, Kunin, Calle Jarnkrok) that they could move. Duchene and Johansen likely are owed too much money ($8 million apiece) and have too much term remaining on their contracts to elicit anything more than lukewarm interest, unless two teams can get reasonably creative.”
  • Anaheim Ducks – “The most attractive bit of trade bait is Josh Manson, 29, a right-shot defenseman earning $4.1 million for this year and next, but someone who has had a difficult time staying healthy. But when he is, Manson is a tough, edgy player to play against.”
  • Boston Bruins – “There are some defensive upgrades that they could conceivably manage… Options that would fit the bill on a shorter-term basis include Ryan Murray from the Devils, David Savard from Columbus, Jamie Oleksiak from Dallas and Montour, from the Sabres.”
  • Colorado Avalanche – “If the Stars were to fall out of contention, wouldn’t it be something if the short-term solution in Colorado turns out to be Anton Khudobin? Other more realistic options: Jonathan Bernier from Detroit or Antti Raanta from Arizona, who put on a goaltending clinic vs. the Avs last Wednesday night.”
  • Toronto Maple Leafs – “The Predators’ Granlund has been linked to the Leafs in some speculative circles, but repatriating Josh Leivo would be an inexpensive insurance policy and someone such as Boone Jenner, 27, at $3.75 million for this year and next might be a nice fit as well.”
  • Minnesota Wild – “If (Bill) Guerin wants to be bold, he could dangle Matt Dumba on the market, given that if he doesn’t move Dumba either at the deadline or just before the expansion draft, he’s got a protection issue.”
  • Calgary Flames – “If they do fall further out of contention, it’s possible they’ll be sellers but other than Bennett or a depth piece such as Leivo, it’s hard to see a lot of major moves in Calgary until the offseason.”
  • Detroit Red Wings – “(Jonathan) Bernier, as an insurance policy on a contending team, probably has the greatest value here, unless they legitimately start listening on Mantha.”
  • Ottawa Senators – “The Senators can expect to get calls on their UFAs and maybe even a few signed players, such as Chris Tierney, Connor Brown or Austin Watson. Is it just me or does Watson seem like a Darryl Sutter type of player?”
  • New Jersey Devils – ” if the Devils can judiciously sell at this year’s deadline, they’ll be in a position to spend, spend, spend going forward – at a time when everyone else will be trying to shed, shed, shed salary. They will be worth monitoring, a team that could be genuinely impactful at the deadline.”

Scott Burnside (The Athletic) has written about six NHL trade deadline deals he’d like to see this year. Here are some clips of what he posted,

  • Buffalo Sabres trade Taylor Hall to Edmonton Oilers – “The Sabres would have to eat half of Hall’s $8 million salary and the return would be negligible, maybe a mid-range pick and a mid-range prospect… But maybe the Oilers sweeten the pot if the Sabres took Neal off their hands…
  • Calgary Flames trade Johnny Gaudreau to Toronto Maple Leafs – “The Flames will likely have to eat some of Gaudreau’s $6.75 million salary as well as likely take back some salary possibly in the form of Alex Kerfoot… a first-round pick in either this year’s draft or next and another solid pick plus a prospect like Timothy Liljegren.”
  • Arizona Coyotes trade Darcy Kuemper to Colorado Avalanche – “Perhaps adding Francouz, whom goaltending experts believe has NHL starter capability, plus perhaps a second-round pick for Kuemper is the smart play for the Coyotes.”
  • Los Angeles Kings trade Dustin Brown to Pittsburgh Penguins – “The Kings might eat some of that depending on what kind of piece gets sent back. Given the overloaded state of the Pittsburgh blue line maybe there’s a young defensive bauble that satisfies the Kings end of things.”
  • Dallas Stars trade John Klingberg to Philadelphia Flyers – “What would it cost? Plenty. A package that includes a first and maybe a second-round pick plus one of the Flyer’s top young offensive prospects.”
  • Los Angeles Kings trade Jonathan Quick to Carolina Hurricanes – “As for a return, at this stage of his career and given Quick’s contract a late-round pick or lower-tier prospect is likely all it would cost Carolina. Pretty small exposure for a possible big-time return on investment.”

2020-21 Edmonton Oilers GM29: Oilers vs. Senators – Three Players to Watch

The Edmonton Oilers are heading to 7th Heaven with Ottawa Senators tonight. Will the Sens dig in with an injury depleted lineup and squeak out a win or can Leon Draisaitl chalk up another five points and lead the Oilers to another victory to keep the gap between them and the Toronto Maple Leafs at bay?

Click the pic and find the NHL94 player from your team!

Should they be in the lineup, here are three players that I think you should keep an eye on for the Sens tonight,

  • #5 Mike Reilly – Stood out last time with his aggressiveness on Edmonton’s stars. Also because he got gif’d on Draisaitl’s end-to-ender. He’s a player that’s on a lot of trade boards as someone who could help a contender out as a depth option.
  • #19 Drake Batherson – Reminds me a little bit of Cam Neely in that he’s a massive unit with a heavy heavy shot and he knows how to get to the soft areas. Plus he likes to throw the body around a bit. Fighting is all but out of hockey now, so we’ll have to reserve that part of the comparison for another time, but he looks like a fantastically developing power forward that’ll be part of the Sens future for a long time.
  • #28 Connor Brown – Stood out with his speed and forechecking and was one of the better Senators fancies-wise Wednesday’s meeting. That’s a big thing when a game is as lopsided as that one was.

For Ottawa to have success, maybe play with an empty net. The Oilers seem to be having a tough time scoring when the goalie is pulled. You never know, maybe having that extra skater on the ice will help…

Is bringing John Scott out of retirement completely out of the question?

In all seriousness, I would put Joey Daccord in net. He looked much better than Murray and as long as the Oilers don’t shoot high around his ears, he should be okay. Anything can happen in hockey and all the Sens need is a puncher’s chance.

With regards to Edmonton, I’ll be watching these three individuals closely,

  • #19 Mikko Koskinen – I don’t know if he’ll actually be the starter, but Edmonton plays again tomorrow night against the Canucks and I can only assume that Tippett would want Smith going in that one. Koski needs to show that he’s not the next Cam Talbot and that he can instill confidence into his teammates when his name is called. Conversely, his teammates need to show him that they’ve got his back when he lets in a tough one. E.L.E (Everybody Love Everybody).
  • #14 Devin Shore – He’s been solid in his appearances this year. Had a fantastic neutral zone pick-off that lead to a beautiful 2v1 goal with JJ Khaira. In the past, he’s had a couple of 30pt campaigns, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he goes on a little bit of a tear.
  • #84 William Lagesson – Wild Bill is back and the Oilers may have the Swedish version of famed dynasty pairing Jeff Beukeboom and Steve Smith! I will say this though, the Swedes might not be as good as fighting as Beukeboom and Smith, but they’ve got better hands.

Three Keys to Success For the Oilers

  • Find a Way to Get the Second Line Going

There’s enough offensive talent to go around twice over on Edmonton’s second line. Ennis, Nuge, and Pulju are fine offensive hockey players, but they’re getting taken to the woodshed as a group. I just wonder if it’s time to get Leon back to centering his own line and RNH and Puljujarvi back up with Connor. The scoring needs to get spread out a bit more, I feel.

  • Puck Possession

Did you see that 25 pass Tiki Taka goal Edmonton scored last time? I’ve not seen anything like that since the old Russian national teams from the early 80s.

More often that not this year, the Oilers have been losers of the possession game which is down to a couple of things in my mind. One, they were getting outplayed and two, they were leading the game and the score effects were in full force.

More specifically though, faceoffs won. This has been Edmonton’s Achilles’ heel for years and I’m hoping that Ken Holland finds a way to address it before the trade deadline this year. Gaetan Haas, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Jujhar Khaira, and Connor McDavid are not really excelling here, although JJ and Connor have improved I feel. Nuge and Haas simply don’t have it on the draw and this leads to Draisaitl being forced to take more faceoffs than he should be.

  • Give As Much As You Take

I feel like tonight’s game is going to have more of a playoff atmosphere to it. Brady Tkachuk is getting tired of being embarrassed and a couple of Sens went down the other night. We saw Mike Reilly try to take on McDavid too… So, if that’s the case and the game is going to go a little bit old school, I’m hoping the Oilers give it back with one caveat, do it early and don’t let it drag on.

2020-21 Edmonton Oilers GM28: Oilers vs. Senators – Three Players to Watch

Round two of three goes this evening in Edmonton as the Oilers look to go 6-0-0 against the Ottawa Senators this season.

The news in Alberta’s capital with regards to its NHL team is that there are trade rumors flying everywhere at the moment. Boston’s Jake DeBrusk, Columbus’ Elvis Merzlikins, and Buffalo’s Eric Staal have all been mentioned in the last 48 hours as possible candidates for acquisition by the Oilers. Ethan Bear and Kyle Turris have been suggested as players that could be moved out.

Also, Zack Kassian is back at practice and according to Bob Stauffer, he should be at least a week away from returning. Josh Archibald is dealing with an upperbody issue and there’s a chance he’ll be out tonight. William Lagesson is nearing his return as well as he’s been partnering with Evan Bouchard during the morning skates.

Click the pic and find the NHL94 player from your team!

Should they be in the lineup, here are three players that I think you should keep an eye on for the Sens tonight,

  • #18 Tim Stutzle – Half of this phenoms goals have come against the Oilers this year. If that’s not a reason to keep an eye on him then you should do it because he’s Ottawa’s most electrifying player. I don’t know why, but his style reminded me of Alexandre Daigle a bit. Let’s hope the rest of this guys career goes a bit better on the ice.
  • #26 Erik Brannstrom – One of the major pieces Ottawa got back in the Mark Stone trade, this Swede shoots and shoots and shoots. He loves it and for that, he’s a threat on the point. Luckily for the Sens that they’ve got a handful of effective net-front brutes for redirections.
  • #30 Matt Murray – He’s been up and down so far this year against the rest of the division, but make no bones about it, when he’s on his game, he’s very good. Which Murray will we be getting though, that is the question.

For Ottawa to have success they’re simply going to have to outwork the Oilers and hope the hockey gods reward them for it. Edmonton is the one team they’ve failed to beat in their division so far this year and it’s not for a lack of trying. All three of the meetings prior to this one have been 3-2 losses and that tells me that maybe the games are a bit closer than thought.

If the Oilers stack their top line again with 97,29, and 56, Ottawa should try to get their best defensive unit out against them and grind on them, then take advantage of the rest of Tippett’s lineup being a little bit shy of offense.

With regards to Edmonton, I’ll be watching these three individuals closely,

  • #6 Adam Larsson – He’s rivaling Darnell Nurse for best Oilers defencemen this year. He’s been fantastic from a defensive point of view. He’s never going to be a possession darling, but he has developed into one helluva shutdown defender. Bob Stauffer recently said that he could see Larsson’s next contract coming in between $2.75M and $3.25M.
  • #52 Patrick Russell – With Kyle Turris being put in COVID protocol, Russell was skating on the third line with JJ Khaira and Devin Shore at practice yesterday. I’m probably the only person in this guy’s fan club, but that’s a badge I’ll gladly wear. I love the way he plays the game and I have a feeling tonight’s game is going get more physical. I’ve always wondered, if speed isn’t that much of a problem and Connor McDavid needs a winger who excels on the boards and in the corners, why doesn’t Russell get a shot?
  • #39 Alex Chiasson – He scores in bunches and things have been going his way for a good two weeks aside from the suspension. Chiasson has also solidified his spot on the Oilers’ top PP unit as its net-front presence and a dangerous one at that.

Three Keys to Success For the Oilers

  • Keep Calm and Don’t Give Up an Early Goal

Not that this has been a fatal problem against any team other than Toronto, it sure is a deflating event when it does come to fruition. The Ottawa Senators aren’t a great team, there’s no debate there, but they are a relentless team and one that seemingly doesn’t give up no matter the score, whereas the Oilers have collapsed a few times this year and failed to play a 60 minute game.

One thing that Edmonton has done in the past month or so is cut down the goals against quite a bit. I think it was Jason Gregor who was talking about this on his radio show last night, he said they were 7th best in the league in terms of goals against since early February and adding to that, Stauffer and Mark Spector (Sportsnet) were discussing how this club, under Dave Tippett, has learned to quiet the game down and hold onto leads late in games.

  • K.I.S.S

Keep it simple stupid. For every glorious 60ft backhand pass that Leon Draisaitl hits McDavid with as he’s exiting the o-zone, there are three or four at the other team’s blueline that get turned over resulting in an odd-man rush the other way.

I love skill as much as any other hockey fan and understand that skill players usually take the most risks to make the plays they do, but these are bankable points that the Oilers badly need, especially if the Maple Leafs continue to lose (Weird there’s not been any talk of how glorious Toronto’s been in the last week or so) . I’d like the team to stop f*cking around with the puck in their own zone when they attempt to exit it. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen their defensemen bobble the puck between themselves trying to make that 5ft pass out of their own corner to the open man in the middle of the ice…

  • Get That PP Going

Speaking of frustration. I don’t see a lot of movement on Edmonton’s PP. Not from them or the other team and that makes it very easy to defend.

What they need to do is work that puck around the horn faster, support the pass receiver better with two or more options, and force the Senators PKers to move their feet so that a passing lane opens up.

Ottawa may not have a ton skill but they’ve got heart and grit and will do whatever it takes to stop that puck from hitting the net. For example, Nick Paul losing his stick last game and then slide tackling the puck out of his zone.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • The Fourth Period: Buffalo Sabres GM Kevyn Adams says that “Everything is being evaluated” when it comes to making a coaching change.
  • Vancouver Canucks: GM Jim Benning says that they will have to pay their younger players, which will take away from the support they can give them.
  • Ken Wiebe (Sportsnet): It “wouldn’t be a surprise” if the Winnipeg Jets signed forward Paul Stastny to a one year extension.
  • Scott Power (The Athletic): Nikita Zadorov and Calvin De Haan are possibilities to be moved due to younger defensemen on Chicago waiting on their opportunity.
    • Blackhawk forwards Carl Soderberg and Lucas Wallmark are the type to be moved by the deadline.
    • In order to clear some cap space in Chicago, the Blackhawks could opt to trade Dominik Kubalik while his value is high and fetch a good return. He doesn’t have enough surrounding talent to play with and produce.
  • JJ Regan (NBCSN): Suggests that the Washington Capitals should go for a goaltender like Darcy Kuemper or Antti Raanta.
    • At the end of the season the Capitals may opt to try and move forward Evgeny Kuznetsov. Regan believes that they must get a top-line centre in return and they should pitch an offer for Buffalo Sabres captain Jack Eichel.
  • Pierre McGuire (TSN): Believes that the Ottawa Senators should look to sign forward Drake Batherson to a long-term deal rather than a bridge deal. He thinks the Sens should aim for a deal six years or longer.
  • Anthony Scultore (Daily Goal Horn): If the New York Rangers can bring themselves into the playoff picture, bolstering their forwards would be a smart move and 27yr old Rickard Rakell should be an intriguing option for the club to pitch on offer on.
  • Hailey Salvian (The Athletic): The only untouchables for the Calgary Flames are Matthew Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm, Jacob Markstrom, Chris Tanev, and Andrew Mangiapane. Everyone else is available for trade.
  • John Vogl (The Athletic): Buffalo Sabres head coach Ralph Krueger says that forward Casey Middlestadt is evolving well into the transition to winger rather than being a center. Krueger believes he has top-six potential.
