Beer League Heroes Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap Feb 7th-13th

Well, The Edmonton Oilers have not had a good week. Sunday they were utterly obliterated 8-1 in a lazy showing against the New York Islanders, lost a snoozer 2-1 against the Devils, won 5-2 against the Toronto Maple Leafs (the true high of the week) and losing 2-1 in a shootout against the Winnipeg Jets last night.

The biggest problem looking at those scores, is that besides the Maple Leafs game, the Oilers are not scoring goals. They are a one line team, yet again, and for me it’s frustrating. It doesn’t make much sense: when one line is awake and on, the other lines completely disappear. Nail Yakupov is the invisible man. Leon Draisaitl looks like he’s either running out of gas or is hiding an injury and Taylor Hall is trying to do too much at once.

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars

3. Laurent Broissoit. Brossoit played in his second career NHL game last night in the shootout loss to Winnipeg and by all accounts was rock solid. Sure, the shootout he let in two goals that sealed it for Winnipeg but I was really rooting for Brossoit to get his first NHL victory. He was a late addition to the starting line up as usual starting goaltender, Cam Talbot, was out due to illness. In two games, Brossoit’s lowest save percentage is .961 This season in Bakersfield, Brossoit has played 26 games, some missed due to injury and sports a decent .921 save percentage. I like LB a lot; I watched him in Juniors with the Oil Kings and I’ll be definitely rooting for the Oil King alumni.

2. Jordan Eberle Eberle posted five points this week, including four goals and an assist. He scored, amazingly, his first career hat trick against the Toronto Maple Leafs. His chemistry with McDavid is looking very good and he’s been on fire as of late. Some want Nail Yakupov to be playing with McDavid but right now Eberle is the better player to be playing shotgun to 97. Last night he scored the lone Oiler shootout goal, a nice snipe top corner. As someone who wanted Eberle moved for someone attractive, I’m starting to change my stance.

1. Connor McDavid. Expect McDavid to be number one every week for the rest of the season. He’s that good of a player and he showed it against Toronto where he scored a whopping five points (two goals and three assists). On the empty net goal against the Leafs, he unselfishly gave the puck to Eberle for his first career hat trick. From all accounts he looked a bit sluggish against the Jets but was often the most dangerous player when on the ice. While he was held pointless against the Jets last night, McDavid had a staggering seven points in four games played.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors

To the shock of no one, the Edmonton Oilers are expected to be sellers for the trade deadline. Elliote Friedman also saying that Jordan Eberle will not be traded before the Trade Deadline, which again, is not exactly a huge shocker.

Potential movers? I think Teddy Purcell is a goner. Justin Schutlz will also be on his way out too. Other names not as likely but could, include Mark Fayne and Eric Gryba, although I think the Oilers like Gryba enough.

Also one news item I wrote at theoilersrig.com was from John Shannon of Sportsnet concerning the Oilers being the next team to play in the outdoor game, hosted by Winnipeg. Interesting to note is that the game would be slated to be played in October. I love it!

Around the League

The Minnesota Wild, losers of eight straight, have fired Head Coach, Mike Yeo.

A huge trade happened this week: Dion Phaneuf in a nine player deal from Toronto to Ottawa. As a Sens fan , I like the trade. Shed some salary they didn’t want, and they finally get a bonafide top four defenceman.

TSN released a list of the top fifty NHL affiliated prospects.

Carrie Underwood aka Mrs. Mike Fisher, had some fun at Ryan Johansen’s expense.

The Chicago Blackhawks, not the Toronto Maple Leafs, are set to host the 2017 NHL draft.

Highlights

Dion Phaneuf got his first point as a Senator, the crowd loved it

BLH Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap Jan 3rd-Jan 9th

The Oilers should be 2-0-0 this week after two games.

Somehow the Oilers managed to score five goals against Tampa Bay unfortunately three of them were on themselves.

Honestly, I have never seen something like that while watching hockey. Maybe one of the pucks go off the defender and in, sure that happens.

But THREE times? That’s witchcraft right there. It’s a damn shame too because I thought the Oilers outplayed the Lightning in that game.

The Oilers have four games this week, including one tonight against the red hot Florida Panthers, who have won 11 in a row.

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars

3. Justin Schultz (!?!). Yeah, this one is surprising considering that Justin Schultz is Tom Poti 2.0 in the eyes of Oilers fans. He’s the whipping boy of the team. That said, the whipping boy looked pretty solid these last few games, He’s looked slightly better in his own zone and has rebounded since his awful game against Calgary on the 27th of December. He was solid against the Lightning, earning the second star for the night by having a goal and five shots.

2. Andrej Sekera. Chiarelli’s free agent acquisition is starting to look really good right now. He’s the defacto number one defenceman and it would be debatable that he is still that when Klefbom returns. He’s easily the best defenceman on the Edmonton Oilers right now. He’s the type of player who does everything right, but not flashy. He’s not a physical player, it’s not his game, and that drives people crazy. He scored the lone goal in a snoozer against his former team, The Carolina Hurricanes, in Overtime no less. I was thrilled when we signed Sekera and I’m still happy we have him.

1. Cam Talbot. Remember when people were declaring they were done with him after 12 games played? I do. It was silly to proclaim that. He’s been very good for the Oilers and has taken the number one job from Anders Nilsson. Woodguy55 of becauseoilers.com mentioned this after his game against Carolina:

That’s a starting goalie’s save percentage right there. Ten games isn’t a huge sample size, that’s granted, but it sure is a lot better than saying “I’m done” after twelve games. Talbot is starting yet again against a strong Panthers team and while he took the loss against Tampa Bay, there was no way any of those fluke goals were his fault.

Edmonton Oilers News and Trade Rumors

That’s too bad, but at least we have a date when McDavid will be returning. Not going to lie, I thought McDavid would be back by next week, but then again, I’m no doctor. I understand and fully support Management’s decision on this injury: there have been far too many times where the Oilers would rush players back from injury and it impacted them negatively. It stinks not having McDavid for another month, but we’ve lived without him for two.

Even worse news was the revelation that Oscar Klefbom would not be back until after the all star break. It’s rough news as fans were expecting a huge boost when both players returned.

One big name that is thrown out there is Kevin Shattenkirk. It was reported earlier that his name is receiving calls and the Oilers for sure should be involved there, but I’m wary of his contract status. There are not many options out there for a Right Handed top four defenceman for the Oilers right now, with Seth Jones recently traded and Hamonic injured. You can bet that Chiarelli would be interested.

Jonathan Drouin requested a trade from the Tampa Bay Lightning. It was revealed via his agent, Allan Walsh on Twitter, but the requested dated back to November. Can’t really blame Drouin here: he wasn’t getting any playing time and was recently sent down to the AHL. I don’t think the Oilers will be runners in this race, but St Louis has been mentioned a few times.

Keith Yandle is not talking an extension with the Rangers and that makes him a candidate to be traded. Yandle was acquired last year from the Rangers (with Chris Summers and a 4th round pick) for John Moore, Anthony Duclair and a conditional 1st round pick in 2016 and a second round pick in 2015. It was a heavy price.

Around the League

The biggest trade so far this season took place on Wednesday when Seth Jones was traded to Columbus for Ryan Johansen.  You just don’t see one for one deals of that magnitude in the NHL anymore!

Earlier that same day, the Los Angeles Kings acquired Vincent Lecalvalier and Luke Schenn . Philadelphia received Jordan Weal and a 3rd round pick in return.

Mike Richards signed with the Washington Capitals on Wednesday as well.

Emerson Etem was traded from the Rangers to the Canucks for Jensen and a 6th round pick in 2016.

The Week Ahead

The Oilers play four times this week including tonight against the Panthers. They have a two game road trip visiting the Coyotes on Tuesday and the Sharks on Thursday, while hosting the Calgary Flames on Saturday.

Three big divisional games, with no McDavid or Klefbom to save them. It’ll be tough.

That’s the week that was. Follow me on Twitter (I changed my Twitter handle recently) and have a good week!

Is It Ok The Oilers Didn’t Keep Up With The Jones’?

When the dust settled around the blockbuster deal that saw Nashville  and Columbus exchange marquee young players, – defenceman Seth Jones and center Ryan Johansen – my first impression was that the Edmonton Oilers missed out.  The oil lost out on a right shot D with a ton of potential because we either didn’t have the assets to trade, or refused to do so.

However, later on in the day, after listenting to the Oiler’s produced and managed talk show, “Oiler’s Now” I had a different perspective, or at least some added perspective on where the Oiler’s brain trust is taking this team.

Host Bob Stauffer had spent the bulk of the show on the defensive, justifying why the Oiler’s hadn’t over-paid (like Columbus did) to acquire promising young defenceman Seth Jones.  At the end of show he fielded the call from a “T” who said  a number of things including that Stauffer was dumb, and that Nugent-Hopkins was not a strong enough asset to land Seth-Jones.  That was enough to send Stauffer over the edge and the big man sent a venemous volley back to the caller.

“Actually T, you’re the dummy, because the Edmonton Oilers could have got Seth Jones for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.  And he’s not the only defenseman he could have had out of Nashville.  If you had a clue.”

Bob Stauffer

Whoa momma.  Looks like this is one of those moments when Stauffer gives up on being coy and is all in for being direct.  My interpretation: the Oiler’s did enquire about Jones.  No surprise.  But whereas I (and many other fans) believed Nugent-Hopkins was not enough to land the burgeoning star defenceman, Stauffer lays waste to that notion.

The Oilers could have got Seth Jones, but decided the deal wasn’t fair value for the Nuge.  Now that may sound off, base,  considering what Nashville eventually received for Jones, but are we maybe under-valuing our asset and over-valuing Nashville’s because we are in such a deficit for right shot D?

If we look at Seth Jones’ performance with Nashville this season, he is far from a top pairing defenceman.  He’s actually a third pairing defenceman.  Which many argue is fair, considering he is playing behind Roman Josi, and Webber.  But when we consider he is losing minutes to ostensibly lesser prospects lie Ryan Ellis and Matias Ekholm, there grows a concern.

According to Stauffer, he’s watched Jones a lot this year and noted he wasn’t exactly “hitting it out of the park.”  My interpretation of that comment would be that Jones’ defensive game is deficient and he is undoubtedly lacking on the physical end.  He’s not going to punish opposing forwards like, say, a Boychuck or Chara would.  And when you look at what the Oilers are lacking on their blueline, that was doubtless a concern for Oiler’s GM Pete Chiarelli, who likely came to the conclusion the risk wasn’t worth the reward, and pulled the Nuge off the table.

Does Johansen’s Downside Make Him More Of A Gamble Than Nuge?

So then the additional question is, how did the Preds get an asset like Johansen when they gave up an asset that is clearly in his developmental stages?   I would say there were a number of reasons for that, the biggest ones point to flaws in the Columbus organization.  First off, they have a coach in Torterella who doesn’t seem to know how to get the best out of his star players.  All you had to do was point to Torts insistence that the Sedins block shots to know that he doesn’t always put his players in a position to succeed.  Johansen for his part, has a reputation of marching to his own drum and that doesn’t work for Torts.

Johansen is also not that far away from restricted free agency.  Considering his representation and history, the Bluejackets could only look forward to a potentially long, messy negotiation that could end with Columbus losing Johansen and not getting fair value.  That’s a concern.

Lastly Johansen has had health issues, specifically heart problems.  If that did become a chronic issue he would have to retire, and the Bluejackets would be left with no return.  Considering these factors, which Columbus likely did, their return was decent.  They have one of the best young defencemen in the game with a ton of, “potential.”

Nuge Is Still Huge

Comparatively speaking, the Nuge is on a very nice contract for a top six player.  He continues to round out his game, and is widely considered to be ahead of the curve with respect to two-way play and still has more upside.  A 25 goal 70 point campaign was my expectation for this year, and while he’s not on pace for that, 60 points in a season is not too shabby (currently on pace for his standard 56 points) in today’s NHL, and that’s more or less where I believe he will end up.

Now, if we had a magical hockey trade wand and Roman Josi was coming back in exchange for the Nuge, I think we can all agree the Oiler’s would have to do that.  But in this situation that was not the case.  Stauffer refers to more than one Nashville defenceman being available and that was likely Ellis, or Ekholm, not Webber or Josi.

Landing Hamonic Now a Must

Now that the Jones’ transaction has happened you would have to think Chia and co are very focussed on in Travis Hamonic.  They won’t be able fo give an equivalent top 4 D, which NYI wants, but a top 6 forward and decent defensive prospect should match Snow’s best offer.  My concern is that since Chia over-paid for Griffin Reinhart, so Snow will believe he can really hit a home run on Hamonic, so there could be battle of wills here.  At this point, my confidence remains with Chia.

As for the efficacy of Stauffer’s comments, I have to think he was telling the truth and not spinning.  Chiarelli and McClellan’s vision of the future appears to be one where they can be dominant at both ends of the ice, and Stauffer’s comments reflect that, as the media division of the Edmonton Oiler’s should. So if the Oiler’s rob Peter to pay Paul, it won’t be an extreme exchange.

BLH Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap: Dec 13th-19th

The Six Game Win Streak was nice while it lasted. The Oilers finished their four game road trip with an abysmal 1-3 record. Sure, they grabbed a win against Boston on the 14th, but everything else was just….bad.

Put it this way: in the last three games against the Rangers, Blackhawks and Avalanche, the Oilers were outscored 13-3. That’s horrid. Worse yet were the apparent efforts against the Blackhawks, where they won 4-0 in an easy win. Last night, the Oilers could do no right against a hot goaltender like Varlamov and lost 5-1.

It’s a grim record for sure. Monday they play the Jets and then have a five day break before a back to back against Vancouver and Calgary. It doesn’t get any easier either: They take on the Kings on the 29th and the Ducks on the 31st. It’s going to be tough and there are hurdles like mad.

The Oilers are definitely missing Oscar Klefbom and he could not come back any sooner. Worse yet was the apparent injury of Brandon Davidson where he was cross checked from Blake Comeau.

No call on the play. No reaction from the team. Nothing. It was old Oilers hockey where someone gets hurt and the team has not even one bit of a response from them.

It’s a damn shame because Brandon Davidson has been the most underrated rookie in the NHL this season and it’s not even close. Losing Davidson and Klefbom stinks. A lot.

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars:

Honestly, this week, there are not any stars. The team stunk this week, despite a win against the Boston Bruins.

The only player that deserves a remote star is Cam Talbot, where he posted 47 saves in 3-2 win against the Boston Bruins. That’s about it.

Who deserves a star? They’ve allowed 4, 4 and 5 goals in the last three games, so certainly not the goaltending or the defence.

They’ve scored a whopping three goals in three games: 2,0,1. The offence certainly doesn’t deserve any praise.

Tough love for the Edmonton Oilers for sure this week. I can’t find any positives in those last three games. Sure, they outshot the Avalanche heavily and were equal in shots against the Rangers, I’ll give them that.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors:

So the NHL has the holiday freeze now in effect for any trades. Expect rumors to be the same.

However, there were some newsworthy posts around the Edmonton Oilers recently:

Matt Henderson had a scathing post at Oilersnation.com about Justin Schultz.

Oilonwhyte had a conversation with former Edmonton Oiler, Patrick O’Sullivan that is definitely worth a read.

(Side note: I’d highly recommend the book. I just completed the read and it was engaging and disturbing. There were things that a parent should never put their kid through like John O’Sullivan did to his son.)

Oilersnerdalert had some solid metrics as usual concerning the game against the New York Rangers. Do note however, that he is away from December 17th-January 8th. Darn.

Connor McDavid has been skating with the Edmonton Oilers again.

Around the League:

Montreal Canadiens Legend, Dickie Moore, passed away at 84.

Like Jaromir Jagr? Sportsnet Magazine recently did an Oral History of Jagr.

Bad News for the Canucks: Henrik Sedin to miss second straight game due to injury.

Ryan Johansen could be traded according to Blue Jackets President, John Davidson. This comes after Johansen was a healthy scratch in a 7-5 win over the Arizona Coyotes

Stockton beat Bakersfield in an AHL outdoor game in Sacramento yesterday. The game was moved to Saturday after a rain delay on Friday.

NHL All Star Vote Leader John Scott was put on waivers.

Canada destroyed Belarus 7-1 in an exhibition game in preparation for the World Junior Tournament.

Highlights:

Colton Parayko had a beauty against Calgary

As did Alex Ovechkin against the Lightning

Jimmy Howard had a nice save on Alexander Burrows

The Week Ahead

It’s a slow week for the Oilers with only two days taking place over the span of five days: they play hosts to Winnipeg on Monday and Vancouver on Saturday.

That’s the week that was. Follow me on Twitter and have a happy holidays!
