NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Says the Vancouver Canucks are looking for help on the blueline and Victor Mete (MTL), Vince Dunn (STL), and Travis Dermott (TOR) may be available.

BLH’s Thoughts: Will any of those players move the needle in Vancouver aside from Dunn maybe?

  • Pierre LeBrun (TSN): Says as many as 20 candidates have reached out to the Pittsburgh Penguins to let them know of their interest in the GM’s position including Peter Chiarelli, Mike Futa, Mike Gillis, Chris Drury, Ron Hextall, Mark Hunter, etc.

BLH’s Thoughts: Please be Chiarelli!

  • Darren Dreger (TSN): Wonders if the Pens miss the playoffs again or get knocked out early, could there be potential for a gargantuan change in philosophy that includes moving their big boys out. He says the club owes it to Sid Crosby, Gino Malkin, and Kris Letang to have a sit-down and discuss the direction of the club and if they would prefer to chase a championship elsewhere.
    • “Imagine if those names were in play at some point in the future?”

BLH’s Thoughts: If Pittsburgh or their stars wait too long to transition they’ll miss their window to help each other out. Their new GM is going to have his work cut out for him and I’m here for all of it if they decide to go full rebuild.

  • Jim Thomas (St. Louis Post Dispatch): Says the Blues will be looking for a draft pick in return for Vince Dunn and that when Vlad Tarasenko returns there’s going to be a salary cap challenge to deal with.
    • “If they trade Dunn — or someone else — they won’t be wanting an active NHL player back. (Unless it’s part of some bigger, more complex deal.)”

BLH’s Thoughts: Can’t see Edmonton being in on Dunn if the price is a draft pick. They’re already down a 2nd rounder and I don’t believe Holland will deal their first round selection unless a player of real quality is going to Edmonton.

  • Joe Haggerty (Boston Hockey Now): Says trading Anders Bjork makes a lot of sense for the Boston Bruins given the return of David Pastrnak is going to give the club more forwards than required.
    • “It obviously wouldn’t happen until the Bruins get David Pastrnak back this weekend and it may be pushed back a bit with the current injuries to wingers Jake DeBrusk and Ondrej Kase. But once the Boston Bruins have a full, healthy complement of forwards, they are going to have too many players for not enough spots in the everyday lineup.”

BLH’s Thoughts: With Edmonton’s PK shitting the bed like it is, I wonder if that Bjork-for-Chiasson deal doesn’t spark up again. The Boston winger is assertive, big-bodied, and quick. An upgrade on JJ Khaira, if anything.

  • The Hockey News: Ken Campbell, Matt Larkin, and Ryan Kennedy got together for a roundtable recently and were asked who they thought hockey fans should keep an eye on trade-wise.
    • Campbell – Bobby Ryan
    • Larkin – Taylor Hall
    • Kennedy – Darcy Kuemper and Clayton Keller

BLH’s Thoughts: Kuemper isn’t off to the hottest of starts this year but I’d be willing to bet that the Oilers make a call on him once Mike Smith is back and playing again. Might that be too late by then though? Bobby Ryan is a player I’ve always liked. He had a really nice run a few seasons ago with Ottawa and given his cheap contract, I’d probably prefer him to Tyler Ennis right now.

(1/28/2021) – BLH’s NHL Rumors: “The St. Louis Blues are already engaged in discussions…”

BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring Colin White (OTT), Vince Dunn (STL), Patrik Laine (CBJ), Anders Bjork (BOS), and more!

The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defense and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • John Shannon: Says Ottawa Senators coach DJ Smith was instructed to play Colin White and “the kids” now.

BLH’s Thoughts: I figured White sitting for as many games as he has had something to do with the coach and now Smith has to play him begrudgingly. That can’t be great for the relationship. That said, playing well and being productive should be enough to repair it.

  • Zach Leach (Pro Hockey Rumors): Is reporting that Boston Bruins winger Anders Bjork is on the trade block.
    • ” Bjork has played on several different lines and with different line mates but nothing has clicked… Multiple sources are now reporting that in anticipation of this result, interest is growing in the young winger… With a lineup that is looking pretty complete so far this season, Bjork may also come cheap with the Bruins opting for a pick or prospect rather than a roster player in return.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Will we see that Alex Chiasson/Anders Bjork trade rumors fire up again? The Oilers need someone to spark their bottom-six.

Can you believe that this fanbase is sitting on pins and needles awaiting the return of Gaetan Haas? No offense to him, I love watching him, but he’s not exactly a needle mover.

  • Adam Gretz (NBC): Reckons that even though the Pittsburgh Penguins are in dire need of a defenseman, they might not even be allowed to make a trade.
    • “I am almost positive he would have no authority to make a trade but Patrick Allvin should be going through the rolodex of GM’s and Fantasy GM-ing the shit out of this day.”

BLH’s Thoughts: As soon as I read this I wondered if the Oilers could pry Bryan Rust out of Pittsburgh for someone like Tyson Barrie.

  • Frank Seravalli (TSN): The St. Louis Blues are already engaged in discussions with teams who are interested in defenseman Vince Dunn.
  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Noted that the Blues explored moving Dunn before he signed his latest contract with the team.

BLH’s Thoughts: I’ll say this, I like the idea of having Vince Dunn on Edmonton’s blue line and I’ve written about it before. I think the Oilers would really benefit from having him, but the question is, how many small puck movers does one team need? They’ve got four at the moment (Bear, Barrie, Jones, Bouchard) and Personally, a first-round pick is too expensive for me.

  • Darren Dreger (TSN): Says that the lack of a new contract for Vancouver Canucks head coach Travis Green is somewhat concerning but there is intent from the club to get a new deal finalized.
  • Pierre LeBrun (TSN): Believes that Patrik Laine’s camp will be more apt to take less term on a new deal and maximize money later one. Laine and the Blue Jackets haven’t talked about a contract extension as of yet.

BLH’s Thoughts: I don’t think Laine is long for Columbus. He sounds like a guy who wants to pick his own spot and be the man. I wonder if he doesn’t find himself on the west coast at some point? Following in the footsteps of Teemu Selanne wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world.

(1/26/2021) – BLH’s NHL Rumors: “He’s a blossoming player with much promise, making him a great candidate to be offered in exchange for…”

BLH provides you with the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation featuring Tyler Ennis (EDM), Travis Dermott (TOR), Jordan Kyrou (STL), Victor Mete (MTL), and more!

The Oilers have a bit of a mind-bender brewing on the right side of their defense and a couple of big contracts set to expire there with some high-end prospects almost ready to take over. What is Ken Holland set to do?

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Jonas Siegel (The Athletic): Wonders if the Toronto Maple Leafs might be contemplating moving a defenseman in order to bring in a forward to cover for some injuries to key players.
    • “Perhaps. Travis Dermott feels like the likeliest candidate to move. He’s averaged just over 11 minutes per game so far this season with no power play or penalty killing opportunity.”

BLH’s Thoughts: It’s a tricky conundrum the Leafs find themselves in. What happens to that forward when Thornton, Matthews, and Robertson are healthy? I feel like you’d want to have more dman at your beck and call than forwards in a season like this.

  • Danny Silver (nhltraderumors.me): Says that there might be a fit for Dermott in St. Louis.
    • “Jordan Kyrou currently leads the team with 6 points, but his shooting percentage of 13.3% will naturally come down. He’s a blossoming player with much promise, making him a great candidate to be offered in exchange for Dermott.”

BLH’s Thoughts: No bloody way would I be dealing Jordan Kyrou for Dermott. The Blues might be struggling a bit now, but give it some time. This is a veteran squad who lost their best player in the off-season. Somebody is bound to step up and if that guy is Kyrou, why would you deal him for an unproven third-pairing defender?

  • Mike Chambers (Denver Post): Reckons that the Colorado Avalanche might have to shop around for a goaltender if their situation in net fails to improve.
    • “The Avalanche was not proactive with their goaltending in free agency. Now they might have to be reactive if Francouz’s injury is serious — because Miska has yet to show he’s NHL-caliber and Grubauer is oft-injured.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Who could a player like Sam Girard bring the Avs in a trade? Darcy Kuemper maybe? That’s who I’d go for if I were Joe Sakic.

  • Shug McSween (nhltraderumors.me): Says there are a handful of teams looking into Montreal’s small puck-moving defender Victor Mete.
    • “The Pittsburgh Penguins are desperate for a defenseman right now, and team’s like the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings are all teams with interest.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Edmonton has Caleb Jones sitting right now and I’m not sure if Mete is an upgrade on him. Plus their left-side on defense is five skaters deep right now. I like Mete’s contract, mind you, but I don’t see a fit there.

  • The Athletic: It looks like Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Benning’s seat is starting to get a bit toasty after a dodgy start to the season.
    • “It’s pretty rare that early-season struggles like what the Canucks are enduring would create this level of public pressure on an NHL general manager. Usually, the first ax falls on the head coach… Benning’s seat legitimately appears like it might be starting to get hot. It’ll be worth monitoring this dynamic as the season goes along, particularly if things get really bleak for the Canucks in the early going here.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Well, when you let your no.1 goalie, one of your most important defenders, a goal-scoring Stanley Cup winning winger, and one helluva solid third-line wing go and your team struggles, there’s going to be some heat.

Jim Benning really f*cked his team this off-season, but I wonder if maybe the ownership had a hand in some of this. Has their coach even been given a new contract yet?

  • Jim Parsons (NHLtradetalk.com): Edmonton Oilers winger Tyler Ennis is on waivers and there are some rumblings that his old team, the Toronto Maple Leafs, could pluck him off.
    • ” it is possible he doesn’t clear waivers as he’s on a one-year, $1 million deal and has a history with a number of NHL teams. The Toronto Maple Leafs are rumored to be looking for a forward and there might be a fit there as he’s got history with the organization and was a popular player there over the course of 51 games.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Ennis hasn’t done anything for me this year so far. I’ve like Joakim Nygard more and it sounds like Gaetan Haas is getting close to returning. On top of that, Evan Bouchard could be getting his first bit of action very soon as Tyson Barrie has struggled.

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Jeff Marek (Sportsnet): With regards to the WHL’s 24 game season, says the League is eyeing a late February start. Games will be on weekends only, some teams will share their arenas, and hubs are being discussed. In addition to that, some US-based teams may move to Canada.
  • David Pagnotta (The Fourth Period): Notes that a trade between the New York Islanders and Detroit Red Wings that included Thomas Hickey was nearly completed this week.
    • “Wouldn’t be surprised if Lou pulls something off before rosters are due on Tuesday.”
  • Pierre LeBrun (The Athletic): Gabriel Landeskog’s agent says that he is looking forward to staying his whole career with the Avalanche.
    • “We are looking forward to signing long-term here.”
    • LeBrun also reported that UFA winger Mike Hoffman is going to sign with the Blues in the next couple of days.
      • “Hoffman is going to sign a 1yr deal with the Blues in the neighborhood of $4M to $4.25, I think, between now and opening night.”
  • Darren Dreger (TSN): A play-in was discussed, but dumped in return-to-play talks. The proposed idea would’ve had the 4th and 5th placed teams in each division face-off against each other in a 2-game series. The 5th place team would have to win both games to make the playoffs.
  • Frank Seravalli (TSN): Former Arizona Coyotes GM John Chayka is still waiting for an arbitration ruling from Gary Bettman on the contractual dispute when he quit his old club. He’s been linked to the New Jersey Devils’ parent club (HBS&E).
  • Rick Dhaliwal (TSN): The Vancouver Canucks have a huge pending contract to take care of this year, but they’ve yet to engage in extension talks with dynamic forward Elias Pettersson.
  • Elliotte Friedman (Sportsnet): Wondered on Twitter if there’s something brewing with Florida Panthers ironman defender Keith Yandle,
    • “This is something to watch over next few days….FLA’s first two games (vs DAL) were postponed. Yandle’s 866 games consecutively-played streak is longest active (and 4th all-time). Will there be a spot for him?”
  • Larry Brooks (NY Post): On the Rangers/Blue Jackets rumors involving PL Dubois,
    • If the Rangers ask about Dubois, then the Jackets would be pretty well obligated to ask for Alexis Lafreniere in return, don’t you think? And if Lafreniere is walled off, Kaapo Kakko would have to be next in line, and because Kakko is a wing while Dubois plays the middle, figure that the Finn alone wouldn’t be enough. So Kakko and Chytil? Or Kakko and Miller? Kakko, Chtyil, plus? The price would be that high.”

NHL Rumors and Speculation

  • Rick Dhaliwal (TSN): The Vancouver Canucks have checked in with the agent of UFA defender Sami Vatanen.
    • Michael Ferland will miss the start of Canucks camp. Agent says he is at home trying to work things through. His health is most important.
  • Michael Russo (The Athletic): Minnesota Wild head coach Dean Evason says we will know the new captain “soon” which is obvious since they planned to do it before training camp.
  • Dennis Bernstein (The Fourth Period): LA Kings GM Rob Blake says he would explore a deal comparable to the Ottawa-Tampa one, utilizing cap space to acquire assets, and has had conversations with teams with cap issues.
  • Arthur Staple (The Athletic): Told that as of now the Isles are not inviting Josh Ho-Sang to training camp. Ho-Sang signed a one-year, two-way deal on Oct. 27. Could attend AHL camp later in January, but will likely not be with the group that starts main camp on Sunday.
  • Aaron Portzline (The Athletic): Apparently Pierre-Luc Dubois’ camp preferred a short-term deal to give the GM time to trade him for full value. His desire to leave Columbus was made clear once he began talking to teams interested in offer sheets.
  • Buffalo Sabres: Jack Eichel will miss today’s practice due to an upper-body injury sustained in training. He is considered day-to-day. Linus Ullmark will miss today’s practice while he is quarantining due to an immigration issue. The team expects to have him on the ice in the coming days.
  • Jeremy Rutherford (The Athletic): St. Louis Blues head coach Craig Berube says that Robert Thomas will start the season in his top-six.
    • “I think there’s a good opportunity he’s going to open up camp at center in a top-six role. It’s his to take. If he shows he can do it, then it’s his. I mean, he’s a great player and this is his third year in the league now, so I think he’s ready for it.”
  • Mark Spector (Sportsnet): Predicts that the Oilers will trade for a goalie in 2020-21 and neither Connor McDavid nor Leon Draisaitl will win the Art Ross.
    • Before the trade deadline, Holland moves Smith and a sweetener for a goalie who will become the No. 1 for a playoff run.”
    • “After winning three of the past four scoring titles, and having one official playoff appearance to show for it, we sense a change is in the wind when it comes to priorities among the Oilers leadership group.”
  • Jim Parsons (NHL Trade Talk): Commenting on a report from Dan Kingerski (Pittsburgh Hockey Now) that was regarding the Pittsburgh Penguins possibly preparing for a massive 2020-21 in-season trade,
    • “If the Penguins aren’t looking at depth, they must be looking at something bigger.”
