Edmonton Oilers

  • The #Oilers have traded forward Kailer Yamamoto & forward Klim Kostin to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for future considerations.

BLH’s Thoughts: Well, that’s $3.1M in the bank for Holland and it’s sounding like Kostin will sign a contract to play in the KHL. So, not really a sweetener in my books.

If somebody asked me if I like the deal, I think I lean more to the yes than the no. Edmonton’s most preferred linemate couldn’t recapture that magic from his early days and ended up being more of a liablity on the ice than anything. Detroit could be a wonderful place for him as he’ll get a season with uber-pest David Perron and he might learn a thing or two from some of the old Wings like Kris Draper that are still with the organization.

Killer’s been banged up for some time and there are questions about his ability to stay healthy now. I’d say his value is about as low as it could be at the moment, but he joins a team full of undersized forwards, so he should fit right in.

Now the big question is, will the Oilers use that extra money to re-sign Bouchard or spend it on somebody like Nick Bjugstad, Garnet Hathaway, or Connor Brown?

Daily Hive

Jaromir Jagr explains how close he was to signing with the Oilers
  • “Because I promised [Omsk], if I don’t sign with New York, I’ll go to Russia. I wanted to keep my promise,” Jagr explained. “But then, on July 2, Edmonton called. I didn’t want to break the promise. I believe in karma, so if you promise something and you break it, it’s just not good.”
  • “I would’ve made more money in the NHL with the offer I got in Edmonton,” Jagr said. “I could’ve made a lot more.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Sonofabitch… How entertaining would it have been to see Jagr, Horcoff, and Penner? Probably not that much if we’re being honest, but Hemsky and a 19yr old Sam Gagner were on that team too.

Signing Jagr might’ve changed the trajectory on the organization forever though. For better or worse, we’ll never know the answer to that question.

Trade Rumors

Spector’s Hockey

BLH’s Thoughts: I kind of think that if San Jose is going to move Karlsson that they’ll have to be willing to take back a hefty contract and wouldn’t it be better to get an all-star caliber player than a handful of players?

Hellebuyck is a game changer in the way that Curtis Joseph was for Edmonton when the Oilers acquired his rights back in the mid-90s. Buffalo should be all over this guy.

I agree with PIerre, the Panthers are going to need to add another really good player in order to get Hanifin from Calgary. Craig Conroy should be asking for Sam Reinhart I reckon.

Wheeler would look good in Pittsburgh but there has to be better landing spots for him. Edmonton would be one, Toronto could be another, and I wonder about a club like Detroit who is about to turn the corner and become an annual playoff contender again. Could Seattle have interest in Wheeler? The Avs? There shouldn’t be a shortage of suitors for him at this point.

Do the Leafs need some enforcer types? They did pretty well without them last year. Treliving seems to like them though… So we’ll see.
