Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Where One Brother Goes, Will the Other Follow?

Coming from an Edmonton Oilers point of view, BLH provides you with excerpts from the latest NHL news, rumors, and speculation from all of the internet’s best sites including Spector’s Hockey, The Fourth Period, NHL Trade Talk, The Hockey Writers, Sportsnet, The Athletic, TSN and more!

Flyers have had serious talks with Blue Jackets

The Fourth Period: Multiple reports have the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Philadelphia Flyers have held serious contract talks about defenseman Seth Jones. The Calgary Flames, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets are believed to also have shown some interest in Jones.

The Flyers could be willing to part with Travis SanheimTravis KonecnyMorgan Frost and Nolan Patrick had been part of trade talks this past season and could find themselves used as bait again.

BLH’s Thoughts: As Oilers fans, are we watching the Seth Jones sweepstakes a bit closer than normal and is that because we’re under the impression that where ever Seth goes, Caleb could follow? Are things really that simple?

If Seth goes to Philly, do the Flyers even have interest in trading for Caleb? They’ve got their own dmen coming up from the AHL, what would they need with another bottom-pairing defender? Same goes for Chicago, they’re loaded with young defenders who’re emerging.

Maybe it’s time we do away with that narrative.

What will the Maple Leafs do with Morgan Rielly who has a year left on his deal?

James Mirtle and Jonas Siegel of The Athletic: 27-year old Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly is eligible for a contract extension at the end of this month.

Dom Luszczyszyn projects Rielly at $8.25 million per on a long-term deal. With the flat (cap) and his trajectory, he could fall closer to $7 million.

One other option for the Maple Leafs this offseason could be to explore a trade. An NHL player, prospect and pick is the typical return for a player of Rielly’s calibre who is entering the last year of their deal.

Could a deal with the Florida Panthers involving MacKenzie Weegar work for both sides?

Would a deal with the Vancouver Canucks involving J.T. Miller work? Miller could replace Zach Hyman.

Would the Maple Leafs be interested in Los Angeles Kings forward Adrian Kempe in a package?

BLH’s Thoughts: LA is probably the only realistic suggestion out of those three given they’d have the cap room and the assets to make the deal plus if they’re losing Hyman, Kempe plays a pretty similar style I feel. I think the Canucks are under a lot of pressure to get Hughes and Pettersson under contract as well as find a new home for Nate Schmidt. The Panthers have Sasha Barkov’s new deal to worry about too… What about Calgary though? If Giordano finds himself playing somewhere else next year, the Flames will have an open spot on their top pairing for Rielly.

The Kraken clogging up the trade market?

Sportsnet: The Seattle Kraken expansion draft may be clogging up the trade market a bit as it may throw off protention lists. Elliotte Friedman on Sportsnet 960.

  • “I think Minnesota’s looking at this with Dumba and if they can’t protect him they’re saying ‘OK we might lose him to Seattle’ but if Seattle flips him they’re saying ‘wouldn’t we rather do that and get the assets than Seattle?’”

BLH’s Thoughts: The Oilers could target Dumba or Carson Soucy here depending on which side of the defense they feel like addressing and they could get a discount to boot. Minnesota has to know that they’re over the barrel here in these trade negotiations though, right? There’s not a GM in their right mind who’s going to help Bill Guerin out.
