An Oilers Trade Rumor Commentary AND Bonus Bob McKenzie previewing the Oilers Trade Deadline!

This post is basically a rebuttal post on a rebuttal post. I found an interesting article commenting on a blog from thefourthperiod.com and I don’t really have enough to write an entire blog with but I do have some comments on the one I did find. This’ll be more or less a commentary on both if you will…

But before we get into it, here’s what Bob McKenzie said on his most recent podcast. You should subscribe to it on iTunes or whatever pod app you use because he cusses on his podcast and I dig a media guy who uses the devil’s tongue here and there!

Bob Makes some good points there without really getting into what we don’t already know… But it ties into what the rest of our blog talks about.

Anyways, the main course of the day…

A recent report from The Fourth Period connected the Edmonton Oilers and Pittsburgh Penguins in what could be a significant trade within the next couple of weeks.

The Penguins are ideally looking for a 3rd line centre. Riley Sheahan may have to suffice as the team’s pivot in that position, but if Jim Rutherford can upgrade at the position, he will. He’s also looking for another scoring winger.

I’ve been saying that the Penguins are looking at the Oilers for some time now. They’d love to have Mark Letestu back as his experience and right-handedness will most definitely come in handy in the post-season for Pittsburgh. But with Sheahan seemingly building some nice chemistry with Phil Kessel, will the Pens really want to mess around with that?

The Oilers, on the other hand, are selling off, as this season is all but over. Patrick Maroon and Mark Letestu are two of the most talked about rental assets that Edmonton has to offer, and they happen to be a winger and depth centre.

I’m not entirely sure if the Pens will want Maroon at this point. Pittsburgh’s coach likes his wingers fast and responsible, two things that Maroon isn’t lauded for.

While there are obviously more talented options on the market, they may come cheapest, and will fit the bill well enough. Rutherford doesn’t have a ton of great assets to give up, so Edmonton appears to be the perfect trade partner.

This is where things start to get a bit dodgy. Why would this author think that the Oilers are going to give Maroon and Letestu up on the cheap? Sure they won’t cost the acquiring team any 1st rounders or blue-chip prospects but that’s not to say Peter Chiarelli isn’t going to ask for, and get, some decent hockey players that a team would rather not give up.

And this isn’t just conjecture on our part.

Of course it isn’t…

From The Fourth Period’s report:

“While it’s too early to guarantee whether either forward ends up if moved, there seems to be considerable interest in teams in the East, including the Pittsburgh Penguins, who have been eyeing both players.”

This is the only part of the original blog that connects both Maroon and Letestu to the Penguins… I’m impressed that the author could stretch a post out of one paragraph!

East-West trades are seemingly more common occurrences than in-conference trades, so this lines up with that general trend. This seems like a perfect match.

The Penguins have some B-prospects they could give up along with draft picks.

Do they? Because apart from perhaps Filip Gustavsson, Daniel Sprong, and Zachary Ashton-Reese, they’ve got a whole lot of nothing coming up. Which all three would be of interest to the Oilers as well as the Pens’ 1st and 2nd round picks in the upcoming draft. The key asset for a deal here that they don’t have is that 3rd rounder this year.

But maybe, just maybe, they’d be willing to move the struggling Carl Hagelin plus for Maroon and Letestu.

Maroon has 13 goals and 13 assists for 26 points in 50 games this year – he’s coming off a career-high 27-goal season in 2016-17.

Letestu has 8 goals and 17 points in 51 games. He scored a career-high 16 goals last season. He’s known to be able to play in most situations, and could be a decent option for Pittsburgh, should they decide to acquire both players from Edmonton.

So there you have it. Have your feelings changed on what to do with Pat Maroon and/or Mark Letestu? Have your valuations of either player altered since we talked about these players last?

Oilers Looking at Another Swede?

I’m sure you’ve heard or read these quotes from former GM and TSN hockey analyst Craig Button regarding the Edmonton Oilers’ recent woes but if you haven’t, enjoy…

“They need a lot more horse power. Speed, speed and more speed. In a 100 km league, they’re going 95 km/h and it’s not good enough.”

“When you are slow, you are always going to be chasing the puck and they are slow. I know Peter Chiarelli has talked about we need to play fast — playing fast is the new buzz phrase in hockey. Well… they can only play at a certain speed and, quite frankly, that speed is not up to the competition.”

“Until they address their speed problems, they are going to be chasing the puck all night long, giving up grade ‘A’ scoring chances. Outside of Connor McDavid, there is no other player on the Edmonton Oilers who threatens with speed.”

I don’t necessarily agree with Button on this one because last year when the team was playing into the 2nd round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, speed wasn’t a concern. Not only that but last I checked, Jordan Eberle, Benoit Pouliot, and Matt Hendricks weren’t winning races.

So I went ahead and asked one of my sources what the deal was with this supposed team speed problem and was there a player the Oilers were looking at to address it? I was offered these thoughts,

“Well, the Oilers are looking at a guy like Carl Hagelin, He’s had a rough start (this year) in Pittsburgh but he’s quick, moves well, and thinks the game fast, supports the puck fast, has the wheels, and a quick release.”

“The team is constantly chasing the puck because they are slow and Hagelin is the kind of player who would help there.”

“With adding a speedy player, I think that hockey IQ is just as important as everything else when it comes to grading a player on ability. Hagelin isn’t a star in my opinion but if the Oilers could get him for a young winger, it’d help the Oilers be faster AND quicker.”

Very interesting, no? I love his speed and if that is truly the reason for looking at him, I don’t have any qualms about the Oilers picking him up. He doesn’t score a lot  (either did Maroon before coming to Edmonton) but he might be part of a very select group of players that can keep up with McDavid. He makes $4M per year this year and next before going UFA in 2019.

Only 3pts this year but the Penguins are not having a great start scoring-wise either. Here are his career stats.

I asked if Pat Maroon would be the kind of guy that could go the other way because of all the players that are probably the most tradeable but wouldn’t hurt the Oilers as much, it’d be Maroon… Having Maroon, Lucic, and Khaira all on that left side is a tad redundant I feel.

“Maroon is definitely a possible trade chip. Word is, he’s looking for $3.5-$4.5 for 4 years and the Oilers aren’t wise to that.”

Now from what I’ve gathered, the Penguins are looking for scoring too but I’m not confident that Maroon would be that guy. That being said, Maroon has shown a propensity to score with generational players and the Pens might want to rid themselves of Hagelin’s contract…

How do you feel about Carl Hagelin? Do you think that he’s the kind of player that would help the Oilers?

BLH Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap January 10th-16th

The Edmonton Oilers finished 1-1-2 in the last four games, with four points in the last four. On paper, that doesn’t look great, and it isn’t. However, all four of those games were one goal affairs.

The problem right now with the Edmonton Oilers is the lack of goal scoring which is mind boggling considering how much skill the Oilers have. That said, they’ve looked competitive in those games. Some of those games were heartbreakers, like the Arizona game where the Oilers blew a 3-1 lead and lost in overtime, or San Jose where they fell in the shootout.

Against the Panthers, the Oilers were the better team but didn’t get a point. That’s life.

That said, there’s only four more games left until McDavid returns, including a three game road trip.

The Edmonton Oilers Three Stars:

3. Jordan Eberle: Jordan Eberle, while pointless in three of those four games, did post three assists against Arizona. Eberle has started to look more productive, especially compared to last month where he was not very noticeable. He’s shown recently that he has chemistry with Leon Draisaitl, although last night he ended up back with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Benoit Pouliot.

2. Andrej Sekera: Sekera, like I said last week, is the number one defenceman of the Edmonton Oilers and it’s not really close. He’s been quietly outstanding. He’s leading the d-corps in minutes played, with the lowest amount being 20:54 against Arizona. He played whopping 27:25 against Calgary last night. Continuing with last night there was a fantastic play where he stayed with (I believe) Johnny Gaudreau and as Gaudreau was about to shoot, Sekera went down, blocked the shot, recovered the puck and moved it out. It was a simple but effective way of play from Sekera and deserves some more recognition.

1. Cam Talbot: This Week, Talbot played in three games, including the shootout win against Calgary. In those three games, he had a combined 0.933 save percentage. In his last five games, Talbot is rocking a 0.931 save percentage. Talbot has been outstanding these last few weeks, which is a far cry to when people were giving up on him back in November. He’s a starting goalie, it’s established now. The real question is: what type of starting goalie is Cam Talbot? It’s a really good question because there’s still a limited sample size. Personally, I don’t think he’s as bad as he was in November, nor as good as he was in December. It’s a happy medium. I had Talbot finishing the year around 0.920 for save percentage and right now he’s 28th with a respectable 0.914%

There’s a lot for Talbot because this morning it was announced that Talbot was signed to a 3 year extension, for around 4.17 million.

It’s a good contract, seems pricey at first glance but Jonathan Willis at Oilersnation.com writes that Talbot is actually 24th in Starting Goalie Salary. It’s not a bad deal although I’m a bit nervous about a NMC for the first two years and a modified no trade clause for the third.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors

Connor McDavid turned 19 this week on Wednesday! However, it wasn’t the greatest birthday as McDavid was announced that he will not be returning until after the All Star Break.  It’s too bad because I know I miss seeing 97 on the ice, but makes sense from an Oilers perspective, where the organization has been notorious for rushing players back too soon.

Also announced was that Oscar Klefbom would be out until after the break. Jason Gregor of Oilersnation revealed that Klefbom is fighting a Staph infection

Finally, Mark Spector revealed the Oilers were in on Seth Jones and offered Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Personally, I wanted to see that deal, but I completely understand the pros and cons to that potential deal. At the end of the day, it didn’t happen.

Around the League:

We had a three way trade: to Montreal John Scott and Victor Bartley. To Arizona: Jarred Tinordi. To Nashville: Stefan Elliot.

Former Edmonton Oiler, David Perron, was traded (along with Adam Clendening) to Anaheim for Carl Hagelin.

Jonathan Drouin is apparently closed to be moved from Tampa Bay. St. Louis and Anaheim are among teams heavily pursuing.

Alex Ovechkin was honored for his 500th goal by the Washington Capitals (video to follow)
