Edmonton Oilers Preview:

Last night, it was released in the media that Nail Yakupov had asked for a trade from the Edmonton Oilers prior to this year’s trade deadline. This news didn’t come as a huge shocker, as it was quite apparent that the Oilers would look to move on from him this offseason.

While it may have not been a formal request for a trade, the Oilers did grant Yakupov’s agent Igor Larionov permission to seek other options. Larionov later said there were “six or seven” teams about Nail Yakupov.

It’s all foggy right now. I’m in a blur. As I had wrote on twitter last night, it’s disappointing to see a situation like this to occur. It’s never in anyone’s best interest for these trade talks to come out in the public but yet here we are.

After Nail had a fantastic rookie season that saw him produce 17 goals and 14 assists for a total of 31 points in the lockout shortened 2012-2013 season, I thought we were in for a treat.

Here came in with elite offensive talent with a rifle of a shot and the ability to fly around the ice. A few coaching staffs later, Nail could find himself on the out. Should a trade come, I hope Nail the best. He is a great young man and I am sure he will find his way in the NHL soon.

When the Oilers came into this three game California road trip, I thought that if the team were to go .500 and play tight in the games I would consider that successful. Heading into tonight’s matchup with the Anaheim Ducks, taking them to overtime would all it would need to take to make my hopes come true.

The Oilers undoubtedly struggled Saturday night against a high-powered LA Kings roster that is bound to make a deep playoff push. Now tonight, the team faces much of the same squaring off against a Anaheim Ducks team nipping at the heels of the LA Kings for the Western Conference lead.

Tonight, the Oilers hope can take down the Ducks with Cam Talbot behind the net. In three career games against the Ducks, he is 0-2-1 with a 2.01 GAA and a .939 sv%.

On top of that, Patrick Maroon will play his first game against his former team. Since his acquisition at the trade deadline, he has been a catalyst for the Oilers scoring 11 points in 12 games. Things have really clicked for the Big Rig in Edmonton since his arrival. His big body play has allowed for Connor McDavid and Jordan Eberle to get more space on the ice.

This was apparent during the games against the Sharks and the Kings in which he was able to score five points against those big teams. The fact that the Anaheim Ducks ate $500 000 worth of his $2 mil contract make this deal all the more sweet.

I wish there was an entire team of Patrick Maroons. That would be awesome. #SwoonForMaroon

Predictions for tonight:

  1. Maroon continues his point streak, notching 1G and 1A against his old team.
  2. Taylor Hall and Leon Draisaitl, who have slowed down as of late, accumulate for 3 points tonight.
  3. Cam Talbot doesn’t get the shutout, but he plays above his head like normal and keeps the Oilers in the game all night long.

Last games predictions:

  1. Oilers win 3-2 in OT.
  2. Connor McDavid scores the game-winning goal.
  3. The Oilers come out and play a very physical game, and there are two fights in the game.

Ducks Preview:
Anaheim was off on Sunday and concludes a five-game road trip in Edmonton; they are 2-1-1 following a 4-3 overtime win against the Ottawa Senators on Saturday in which they were down 3-0 in the third period. “Everyone stuck together,” defenseman Hampus Lindholm told the Ducks website. “[Getzlaf] had a little speech in the locker room [after the second period]. He had good words for us to get us going. We came out and played the way we should’ve from the start.” Anaheim has the League’s best power play at 23.7 percent and scored the winner with the man-advantage in overtime. “Every time our power play goes onto the ice, I think they’re going to have a chance to score,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “That’s a good feeling. … We knew we had the rest of the game on the power play, so we wanted to take our time and make the right play.” The Ducks have clinched a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and are three points behind the Los Angeles Kings for first place in the Pacific Division with a game in hand. Andersen started the past two games, so John Gibson could be in net.

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

Another night, another game where the Oilers have it tough.

The Ducks have miraculously turned their season around after there were early talks this year of the team firing Bruce Boudreau. That seems almost foolish now given the fact that the team has gone 16-4-3 in their last 23 games, including a 9-1-1 tear in their last 11.

Playing a defence first style of play this season, the Oilers will be faced with the tough task of scoring goals. Now, the Pouliot – McDavid – Eberle line has had no issue with this, but there has been a real lack of scoring from the rest of the team post all star break.

Call it what you will, but the rest of the team needs to step up and tonight would be a great night to do so. The Oilers and Ducks have split the season series 1-1 so far this year. The Oilers won 4-3 in OT on Nov. 11 while the Ducks pulled out a 1-0 shutout victory on Dec. 31.

There seems to be another flu bug in the locker room and there is an undisclosed forward feeling the effects of the bug going around in the room. Given that, Coach McLellan feels there is a possibility Anton Lander sees the ice for his first game since the team went on the all-star break.

“A confident game,” said McLellan of [Lander’s] expectations. “I sat with Anton and we talked about his year. We were told he was a slow starter. He had a great training camp. He came out of that training camp and we put him in situations where we thought he could succeed, as high as the third-line centre and on the power play. Things didn’t happen for him. OK, now let’s check, let’s become a good penalty killer. He accepted that role but there’s still more there. We took him out for individual games, gave him a little wake-up call and now it’s been an extended period. How does he respond? Play hard, play confident, play like he can, and prove to himself, his teammates and us he’s a full-time NHL player.”

Man, Todd really is a great coach. I am really excited to see how Anton responds tonight.

With just two points in 48 games this year, the team needs more offensive production out of him. If he were to return to near the player he was last year offensively where he scored 20 points in 38 games, we are laughing.

After missing Sunday night’s game with the flu, Cam Talbot is back in net for the Oilers.

Predictions for tonight:

  1. Lander returns in a big way.
  2. Taylor Hall, who has gone goalless in his last four, scores two goals tonight.
  3. CAM TALBOT SHUTOUT

Ducks Preview: Goalie John Gibson, who sustained an upper-body injury on Saturday and did not dress in a 6-4 win against the Calgary Flames on Monday, remains day-to-day and could start. Frederik Andersen started and Anton Khudobin was the backup on Monday. If Gibson can’t go, Andersen, who made 33 saves Monday, will likely start. The Ducks continue a season-high seven-game road trip (3-1-1), which concludes at the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. Anaheim has won nine of 11 games (9-1-1). “It’s great to score goals and all, but we’re going to win by playing good defense,” coach Bruce Boudreau told the Ducks website. “I thought we made some bad reads today, especially coming back into the zone. The gaps were way too big. It’s great to score goals – and have the ability to score goals – but we have to defend to win.” – nhl.com

Oilers vs Ducks – A Battle of the Basement

TALE OF THE TAPE:

Game: Edmonton Oilers (15-18-3) vs Anaheim Ducks (14-15-6)

Location: Rexall Place, Edmonton, Alberta

Time: 7:00 PM MT

Where to find it: TV: Sportsnet West – Radio: 630 CHED

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

The Oilers are beginning to see a familiar sight as nce again, the team is at the bottom of the Pacific Division. The difference however, is that the team currently sits four points out of a playoff spot.

The Anaheim Ducks however, are a team not far from Edmonton in the standings. Sitting only one point above us, the Oilers have a great chance to get a big W and jump a team in the standings.

This season, the Western Conference is an anomaly. It is so strange to see the Oilers so close to the basement, but yet so close to a playoff spot. If the Oilers want a chance to make the playoffs they have the chance to.

The question is whether or not the team is going to have what it takes to get there.

Tonight, the Oilers need to come out guns blazing as the Ducks have scored a league low 1.89 goals per game. Last time the Ducks and Oilers met was on November 11th, when the Oilers won 4-3 thanks to Teddy Purcell’s game winning goal.

Brandon Davidson and Jujhar Khaira will draw back into the lineup due to injuries to both Iiro Pakarinen and Eric Gryba. Davidson has scored five points in 23 games this season, and is a 53% CF player at even strength.

“[The Ducks] are a team that pushes the pace,” said Oilers defenceman Brandon Davidson. “I think they’ve done a great job on their penalty kill. It’s going to be a great test for us here tonight. I don’t expect anything but their best and we’ve got to be up for the challenge.”

The return of Davidson is a big one for the Oilers. The 24-year old rookie has been a staple on the Oilers blue line, and has earned every minute of ice-time he has been given.

After being drafted in the 6th round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft, Davidson spent a year in the WHL as the captain of the Regina Pats. Since then, he accumulated 150 games in the American Hockey League honing his skill.

Now, he has earned himself a home in the NHL.

Lauri Korpikoski is set to play in his 500th NHL game tonight.

The Otherside:

With the exception of defenseman Cam Fowler, who is on injured reserve with a sprained knee, Anaheim had a full complement of players at practice in Edmonton on Wednesday. Shea Theodore took Fowler’s place and made his NHL debut in a 1-0 win against the Calgary Flames on Tuesday. He played 15:45 paired with veteran Clayton Stoner. “I played it simple,” Theodore told the Ducks website. “It helps when you have a defense partner like Clayton Stoner. He’s a simple guy to play with. He made things easy.” The Ducks have won back-to-back games to climb past the Oilers and out of the Western Conference basement. Anaheim ends a three-game trip against the Vancouver Canucks on Friday before an eight-game homestand.

Cam Fowler seems to be available, so should the Oilers be calling?

On Friday, Elliotte Friedman was on Oilers Now with Bob Stauffer and suggested there is a possibility that the Anaheim Ducks could look at moving defenceman Cam Fowler at some point this season:

I’m very curious about Cam Fowler. You keep hearing his name out there. And I also do think Anaheim would love to get Shea Theodore in the NHL at some point, and right now they’re backed up pretty tight. I’m not as convinced on Cam Fowler in the next month, but I just keep hearing that there are – his name comes out here and there. So that’s an interesting one.

Transcript via Chris Nichols, Today’s Slapshot

Well, that’s interesting to say the least. The source is good. Friedman is well known for providing the some of the best scoops and insight to behind the scenes activity. When he has something to say, I listen.

Fowler is still a bit of an unknown as to what he will one day turn into in the NHL. Will he be a top pairing guy, or will he only be a 2nd pairing guy? Can he play the big minutes?

One thing we do know is that the 23-year old, 6’1, 207 lbs defender has the ability to put up solid points scoring 1.2 points per hour in the NHL over his career. His possession numbers suggest that he is a solid low-event second pairing defenseman. He eats minutes for the Ducks, sitting at 22 minutes per game over his six year career.

After being selected first overall in the 2007 OHL draft by the Kitchener Rangers, he had decided to play for Notre Dame in the NCAA and refused to sign with the Rangers. He ended up breaking his agreement with the Fighting Irish a year later, and got redrafted in the 2008 OHL draft and was selected by his hometown Windsor Spitfires.

He ended up joining the Spitfires where went on to score 55 points in 55 games and help win the team – and teammate Taylor Hall – their second consecutive Memorial Cup title. After being drafted 12th overall in the 2010 NHL draft by the Anaheim Ducks, the then 18 year old jumped right into action playing a hearty 22 minutes a night.

A potential deal for Fowler could make sense. I spoke with Jason Byun, a former writer at Pucks of a Feather who said, “Fowler is due for a pay raise once his deal expires after next season, and with Despres locked up long-term, Josh Manson and Shea Theodore ready (or near-ready) to contribute, and Vatanen/Lindholm needing extensions after this year, he might be the odd-man out.”

If the Oilers brass feel that Fowler has the ability to continue on the path he has taken and develop into a top pairing defenceman, then I would imagine they would like to jump on a deal like this. The question we are left with is what would you give up?

The potential is there for a deal surrounding Nail Yakupov, Cam Fowler and prospects/picks to fill in the gaps. In my belief, Draisaitl has played so well that I could see him easily replacing what is had with Nail Yakupov. Now, this isn’t saying that I don’t think Nail Yakupov isn’t a fit in Edmonton, because believe me I am a big Yakupov fan. However, if we can make a move for a bonafide top-four with strong top pairing potential then I think that is a move we should make.

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

Before tonight’s game, I highly recommend reading this fantastic article on Oilers Nerd Alert. The trends surrounding this team are actually reading in a really positive so it might be a little soon to jump ship on this group.

The advanced statistics show that this team is trending upwards both offensively, as well as defensively. I am an optimist and I really feel that the strong coaching the Oilers have has been looked over. Let’s not forget the credentials and the resume that Todd McLellan and his coaching staff brings with them.

Tonight’s game is no different. Like the Oilers, the Ducks have sputtered out of the gate to start the season. Despite the fact that the Ducks are 4-0-1 in their last five, they are 0-3 when trailing after the first period. On the other hand, the Oilers are 3-1 when leading after the first. A strong start to this game for the Oilers could mean they put the nail in the coffin early.

Friend of the blog (and great Oilers Vlogger) Ryan Robinson pointed out that this season, the Oilers have faced teams that are a combined 110-58-17. As he mentioned, it isn’t an excuse but these games are tough for any team to win. 8 of our 10 losses have been against top 10 teams in the league.

This team has shown that they are willing to fight to win hockey games; I would not be surprised to see the Oilers fight back in the standings and make a climb.

The Otherside:
Anaheim continues a three-game homestand after a 4-3 overtime loss to the Arizona Coyotes on Monday. “[Edmonton has] a different coach and approach to things,” Boudreau said. “They’ve got a different attitude. They definitely have the talent. We know our hands are full because these are teams we’ve beaten in the past. They’re ready to put us down. We better be ready to play.” – nhl.com
