BLH Edmonton Oilers Weekly Recap Nov 30th-Dec 5th

Hey, the Oilers are not doing bad this week! They managed to go 2-1, losing a stinker in Toronto, winning in a shootout against Boston and winning in overtime against Dallas.

To be fair, I didn’t really expect the Oilers to be 2-1 this week. I had them going 1-2 with the win going against Toronto.

The Boston game was my second game of the season I had the chance to watch the Edmonton Oilers live and it was my first original six team and my first NHL shootout. Plus, this time, nobody broke their clavicles!

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars

3) Jordan Eberle . Eberle gets the third star this week because of his shootout winner and over time winner. That said, he has not played the greatest so far. However, both goals were just beautiful. Top corner, both goalies had no chance. It was vintage Eberle.

2) Taylor Hall. Hall right now has leveraged himself above Leon Draisaitl for best current Edmonton Oiler skater. He continues to drive the plays and is the heart of the Oilers offense. He had a very solid showings all week, including a goal in the game against Dallas.

1) Anders Nilsson. Could the Edmonton Oilers finally have a decent goaltender? He’s been rock solid these past few games. While all summer I was on board with Cam Talbot (I STILL AM!), it’s refreshing to see Nilsson, the guy who was seen as fighting for the backup spot with Ben Scrivens, taking the starting position. He stopped a whopping 42 shots out of 43 against Dallas. It’s not often we have an Oilers goalie stealing games for the team but we had one on Friday night.

Dishonorable mention: Mark Fayne. Boy Fayne looked god awful against Dallas. Oilers Nerd Alert has a solid blog post about how badly Fayne struggled.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors

The Oilers don’t have a lot going on. Travis Hamonic is still a New York Islander. Mark Spector had a very obvious article that the Edmonton Oilers are bound to make a move by the NHL draft.

Yesterday, The Hockey News had an embarrassingly bad article about how the Edmonton Oilers must not get the First Overall pick yet again. I wrote a response over at Oilonwhyte.com but my goodness. When the author is the former Editor in Chief of the Hockey News and he can’t even get simple names right (Scott McLellan) or facts (Blues drafted Erik Johnson, not the Blue Jackets) its’ very hard to take something like that seriously. You should read it and treat it like part of the funnies section of the news paper.

The Week ahead

The Oilers have three games this week all at home as they conclude a five game home stead. Tonight they face the Buffalo Sabres, what could have been McDavid vs Eichel round one, Wednesday against San Jose and Friday the Rangers visit for Glen Sather’s night at Rexall.

Edmonton Oilers BLH Weekly Round Up Nov 15th-21st

The Oilers had only two games on the docket this week with a 4-3 Overtime loss to Chicago on Wednesday and a good ol fashioned butt kicking 5-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.

Awesome. They got a possible 3 points out of four! That’s an actual positive and not a moral victory!

It’s crazy though. They are last in the Western Conference but only six points away from a playoff spot in the western conference.

Combine that with a five game eastern conference road trip and you have to think that the Oilers are going to get some points.

Edmonton Oilers Three Stars

3) Teddy Purcell Hey, it’s everyone’s favorite Edmonton Oiler! Teddy Purcell had recently worked with Adam Oates and it’s paying off. He reportedly cut four inches off of his stick and Purcell has been producing. He had 4 points this week, including three against Chicago. I’m noticing Purcell in a positive light and he’s making some outstanding passes and is fighting for the puck. He’s not flashy and not physical nor fast, so he’ll be in the doghouse of Oilers fans, but he’s a good player.

2) Taylor Hall Ah, don’t you love crow? That’s what people who were saying Trade Hall are eating right now. He’s firmly in the top five of league scoring. He too had four points, including a goal and two assists against New Jersey. Like Purcell, you can really see Hall’s play making ability. I mean that pass to Draisaitl for the first goal of the game. Just a beauty.

1) Leon Draisaitl This one was a pretty easy one as Draisaitl continues his massive tear in the NHL with a whopping 17 points. He’s tied with players like Kyle Turris, Kyle Okposo, Evegni Malkin and Steven Stamkos except it only took him ten games. Leon has been the best Edmonton Oiler and it’s not even close. Sure, he’s riding a 35% Shooting percentage which is definitely not sustainable, but you notice that Draisaitl is not scoring at garbage times: he’s usually scoring the first goal of the game, a tying goal, or a clinching goal. He had two goals and two assists this week and mirrored Hall in production against New Jersey with a goal and two assists.

Edmonton Oilers Trade Rumors.

There was a huge trade rumor that is still lingering out there: Travis Hamonic of the New York Islanders requested a trade out of Long Island. It was not due to playing time, not liking the location but strictly for personal reasons. More interesting: Elliot Friedman speculates that it could take a three way trade for the Oilers to get land Hamonic. We had our very own analysis at Beer League Heroes concerning Hamonic. Also, a great blog Oilers Nerd Alert, did an advance stats look at Hamonic and is definitely worth a read.

The Week Ahead

The Oilers play four games on the road this week:

Monday against Washington, Wednesday against Carolina, Saturday against Detroit and Sunday against Pittsburgh (plus a Monday tilt against Toronto)

In my opinion, that’s at least six points the Oilers can get this road trip.

The BLH Oilers Weekly Round Up Oct 11th-Oct 17th

Alright so second week of the Edmonton Oilers season was underway and we ended up with a 1-2-0 record.

It is a tough schedule to be playing against teams like St. Louis and Dallas, but low and behold we have our first victory of the season against the Calgary Flames!

The Edmonton Oilers Three Stars of the Week

3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Nuge has been great on both ends of the ice. He tallied a nice goal right on the rebound last night against Calgary and has shown some really impressive back checking ability. Easily our best defensive forward, Nugent-Hopkins looked very comfortable with Taylor Hall on his left side.

2. Taylor Hall

Hall was our second best forward this week. He scored a crucial goal on a nice individual effort against St Louis and tallied a goal and two assists against Calgary. He was one of our most dangerous forwards in both those games.

1. Connor McDavid

Honestly, who else would it have been? The kid had his breakout game in a rival’s home turf. He silenced the boo birds very quickly. He started shooting the puck and ended up with two goals and one assist against Calgary last night. His assist was nice too: working deep behind the net and he just finds Pouliot wide open (who in turns passes it to Yakupov for his first goal of the year). Then there was the move he did on Hiller, on boy. Hiller made a great desperation save and if McDavid rose that puck, he would have had a hat trick and the goal of the year. It’s scary how good this kid is and we finally got a glimmer of what is to come for this amazing young man. He also scored his first career goal in a stinker against Dallas.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors

Interesting that Doug Armstrong was in the pressbox scouting the Flames and Oilers. It’s very interesting. Blues have had a good start to the season while both Edmonton and Calgary have struggled out of the gate.

Also interesting to note, despite being sent down to the AHL, Nikitin and Scrivens have not played a game yet for the Condors. It’s been debunked as Visa issues, but all is quiet right now.
