Post-Game Report: Oilers vs Calgary (10/12/2016)

Game result: Oilers 7-4 Calgary

Apparently it was “80s Night” over at Rogers Place for our first ever NHL game at the new barn. What a racket! 11 goals! What era even is this? So there were a whole lot of things to like about this game, and some head-scratchers. Let’s go through them in point-form because it’s too late to worry about complete sentences:

Things that were awesome:
– Chiefly, Captain Connor showing up for 2G-1A-3P in his first game of the year is a pretty damn good look at what’s to come for his sophomore season. CANNOT wait to see it unfold
– Maroon getting the first goal in Rogers Place was really cool. He was so stoked on it. Love this guy
– Kris Russell was really good. Guys. Can someone direct me to the nearest bakery serving humble pie? I was shitting on this guy as much as the rest of them because of how awful he is from a fancystats point of view, but he really shone tonight with 2 assists and several solid defensive plays that directly saved very likely Calgary goals. (In case you weren’t confused enough yet, his all-situations Corsi For on the night was 41.67%, and 5v5 was 48.28%. Apparently he is cursed on paper.)
– Larsson looked pretty good, too. Poised. Doesn’t panic. Klef needs to settle in a bit still, I think, but when he does, these two will be mint together
– Here are some more misleading stats since we’re on it: Larsson had a 34.38% all-situations Corsi For on the night, but could you tell by watching? I sure couldn’t. Could’ve been because he played 47% of his TOI against the Gaudreau/Monahan line, as per WheatNOil on Twitter (https://t.co/GqjIhEuD8r). He also started 75% of his shifts in the defensive zone. Leaning on him heavy already, I like it
– Poolparty got his 1st NHL goal on a beauty snipe under Elliott’s wide-open right arm. That’s nice. :] He also lead the team with a ridiculous 76.19% Corsi For rating in all situations, which came back down to earth a little bit at 5v5 with 58.33%, but still really good for the rookie’s first game in the bigs
– Brandon Davidson single-handedly saved, at least from what I saw, 3 sure Calgary goals. Some went off a well-positioned skate, some off his stick, some from getting his body in the way of a player in front of the net. BDavey is just so good and so solid, and that leads me into the other part of the night…

Things that sucked a little:

– So Tkachuk Jr is kind of a shithead, hey? He straight up slew-footed BDavey and he never returned for the 3rd. Still awaiting word on his condition/timeline for return. Fingers crossed it was precautionary. This kid just has no luck
– The Oilers allowed two pretty sloppy short-handed goals there in the 2nd, in what was just a classic #HereComeTheOilers 2nd period. I’d like to know the statistical metric that describes how we’re just so bad in the middle of games when we can start and end so strong
– Talbot was not the sharpest. He did stop 37 shots, but let 4 in for a .902 SV% in his first start of 2016-17. I mean, it’s no Brian Elliott .778 SV%, but we know he can be better. I chalk this up mostly to opening night/new building/don’t screw up this game of all game jitters
– Lucic played just okay. He sure made his presence felt early on when the Calgary goon squad figured they could throw McDavid around without repercussion, so that was good of him. But he gave up a really bad 2-on-1 opportunity and actually accidentally knocked one of those Calgary shorties in. So it’s just a matter of finesse at this point for him, I think. I hope.

Anyway. Numbers and analysis aside, we won 7-4 and start the year on a good note, and almost as importantly, Calgary starts the year on a lame note and that feels just as good if I’m honest.

Oilers vs Flames – One last BOA in the Old Barn

TALE OF THE TAPE:

Game: Edmonton Oilers (30-42-7, 67 pts. 4-6 in their last 10) vs Calgary Flames (32-40-6, 70 pts. 4-5-1 in their last 10)

Location: Rexall Place, Edmonton, Alberta

Time: 8:00 PM MT

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

As the Oilers and Flames are set to take the ice at Rexall place for the final time, many fans are reminiscing over the historic battles the two teams shared on Edmonton’s ice.

Tonight, the Oilers look to put that behind them as they prepare to play in their first game since Monday night. The way the end of the season has been set up for Edmonton has been less than favourable. With only three games in a week and a half, the team has had some time to get healthy for the last few games.

Adam Pardy returns to the lineup tonight, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins is closing in on his return after suffering a concussion.

“It’s interesting,” said McLellan [on the teams long downtime]. “We whined and bitched about not having it and now we’re talking about having it. We had a rhythm going. Every second night for a month and a half we had that rhythm. We were able to rest. We were able to get a couple players healthy or at least healthy enough to play. We had two really good practices. How will we start, will we be rusty? I hope not. I don’t think there’s any reason why we should be. I think this is a good approach for us because if you happen to be lucky enough in the playoffs and win early and wait for another team to play, you’re usually taking four or five days off and you’ve got to be ready to play again. We’re trying to create those moments I guess, without being in the playoffs.”

The team can’t look to take any nights off despite the fact they are near the bottom of the league. These games the Oilers play between now and the end of the season will be important as it affects the way the team could look going into next season.

Zack Kassian, Iiro Pakarinen, Luke Gazdic, Adam Cracknell, Adam Pardy, Jordan Oeterle and Adam Clendening are all in need of new contracts, according to General Fanager.

Until next year, Calgary…

Predictions for tonight:

  1. Oilers win 5-2.
  2. McDavid scores a hattrick.
  3. There will be over 50 minutes in combined penalties tonight.

Flames Preview:
This is the final game the Flames and Oilers will play at Rexall Place, where Edmonton has a 54-43-9-6 regular-season record against its provincial rival. Calgary is 1-5-0 in its past six games and is coming off road losses to the Anaheim Ducks (8-3) and Los Angeles Kings during a midweek trip. “Just all around, it’s been a tough year for us in our own division,” forward Mikael Backlund said after the loss to the Kings on Thursday. Frolik (upper body) is out, but is expected to return when the Flames host the Kings on Tuesday. Gaudreau returned Thursday after missing two games with an upper-body injury. Goalie Joni Ortio, who made 26 saves against Los Angeles, is expected to start. Calgary reassigned defenseman Brett Kulak to Stockton of the American Hockey League on Friday; he played two games in March.

Oilers vs Flames Preview – Are the Oilers about to make a trade?

TALE OF THE TAPE:

Game: Edmonton Oilers (15-18-3) at Calgary Flames (16-16-2

Location: Scotiabank Saddledome, Calgary, Alberta

Time: 7:00 PM MT

Where to find it: TV: Sportsnet – Radio: 630 CHED

Edmonton Oilers Preview:

After falling at the hands of the Vancouver Canucks, news broke about a potential deal involving the Oilers and Canadiens. In last night’s Sportsnet Headlines, Elliotte Friedman spoke about said deal:

“(Canadiens general manager) Marc Bergevin has seemed confident that he could make a trade here and there’s a number of teams (that) are doing background on Kassian to see if (he’s) somebody they’re interested in acquiring” – transcript

The rumours were then linked to the Oilers, as Jim Matheson speculated on the deal:

Our website’s own BLH wrote an article about it last night here.

Sportsnet’s Eric Engels reported this just earlier:

Could this deal make sense? I think so. Kassian is a low risk, middle-high reward type of a player. He has shown in the past he can produce decent numbers, potting 29 points in 2013-2014 with Vancouver. Oddly enough, his advanced stats are not horrible.

1.5 Points per 60 minutes of ice time, 51.6 Corsi For %, 12.5 minutes of ice time per game and a -8 penalty difference. Again, not horrible.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the course of the next day or so. If the off-ice issues in Kassian’s life have been solved, maybe he is a player that could turn into something.

Tonight however, the Oilers need to prepare to get two points out of a matchup with the Calgary Flames as they would allow us to advance past them in the standings.

Like the Oilers, the Flames have been one of the hottest teams in the league. They have gone 8-2 in their last ten, and have won ten straight at home. They look to set a franchise record 11 straight wins at home which was set in 2006.

Jujhar Khaira will draw back into the lineup, Brad Hunt has been recalled from the Bakersfield Condors and Anders Nilsson will start in goal.

The Otherside:

Calgary goes for a franchise-best 11th straight win at home; the Flames haven’t lost at Scotiabank Saddledome since a 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 30. The 10 straight home wins tied the team record set in November-December 2006. “Without that game [scoring the tying goal with one second left] against Boston and the game against Dallas [a three-goal third period comeback], and we would still be having a good homestand but we wouldn’t be talking about records,” coach Bob Hartley said Saturday. “We deserve it. We were very opportunistic at the right time.” The Flames hadn’t skated for three days. “We talked during the video session about our situation, the standings, the rest of the season…it’s a tough task since there’s so much hockey to be played,” Hartley said. “You have to be ready for [the Oilers’] offense. They are fast and very skilled. … we will have to be at our best.” Forward Johnny Gaudreau hat a hat trick in a 4-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday and has 10 goals and 16 points in 10 games this month.

Oilers vs Flames: A Spooky Spectacle

GAME TWELVE VS FLAMES

so good…

TALE OF THE TAPE:

Edmonton Oilers Preview:
Happy Halloween to all you ghouls and gals!

The Oilers are set to take on the struggling Flames who are coming off a rough 6-2 loss at the hands of the upset Montreal Canadiens. Believe it or not, the Oilers have a chance to put a dent into the Flames playoff chances early on; At least, that’s what Craig Button and Jason Gregor talked about yesterday.

To be honest though, I think the Oilers are better than the 4-7 record shows. Since losing the first four in a row, the team has gone 4-3 and they look to be taking strides in the right direction. Recent call-ups Darnell Nurse and Leon Draisaitl have stepped into the lineup and shone early, but let’s remember that we still have seventy games to go in this season. There is a lot of hockey left for these young men to play.

Brandon Davidson stood out to be as one of the bright spots on the team during our win against the Habs two nights ago. He has shown that he has got a very good shot and is able to use his size to his advantage. Like many others on this young Oilers roster, he has lots of work to do. I fully believe that the fear of losing him on waivers is why he is still in Edmonton at this point in time.

Coming out and beating the Flames would be huge for a few reasons. It is a chance for us to put another dent into the Flames season. Oilers fans know that when you are down early in a season, it becomes very difficult to come out of that hole that had been dug.

Not only that, but this game could be another big confidence booster should we come out and play the game the coaches want the team to play. Hopefully ConYak can keep extinguishing the Flames.

The Otherside:

Goalie Karri Ramo, recalled Thursday from Stockton of the American Hockey League, will get the start for Calgary, which has lost four in a row (0-3-1) after a 6-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Friday. The Flames have have one win in their past nine games. The Flames have allowed an NHL-high 46 goals and have scored 22 goals (25th) in 11 games. – nhl.com

The BLH Oilers Weekly Round Up Oct 11th-Oct 17th

Alright so second week of the Edmonton Oilers season was underway and we ended up with a 1-2-0 record.

It is a tough schedule to be playing against teams like St. Louis and Dallas, but low and behold we have our first victory of the season against the Calgary Flames!

The Edmonton Oilers Three Stars of the Week

3. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins

Nuge has been great on both ends of the ice. He tallied a nice goal right on the rebound last night against Calgary and has shown some really impressive back checking ability. Easily our best defensive forward, Nugent-Hopkins looked very comfortable with Taylor Hall on his left side.

2. Taylor Hall

Hall was our second best forward this week. He scored a crucial goal on a nice individual effort against St Louis and tallied a goal and two assists against Calgary. He was one of our most dangerous forwards in both those games.

1. Connor McDavid

Honestly, who else would it have been? The kid had his breakout game in a rival’s home turf. He silenced the boo birds very quickly. He started shooting the puck and ended up with two goals and one assist against Calgary last night. His assist was nice too: working deep behind the net and he just finds Pouliot wide open (who in turns passes it to Yakupov for his first goal of the year). Then there was the move he did on Hiller, on boy. Hiller made a great desperation save and if McDavid rose that puck, he would have had a hat trick and the goal of the year. It’s scary how good this kid is and we finally got a glimmer of what is to come for this amazing young man. He also scored his first career goal in a stinker against Dallas.

Edmonton Oilers News and Rumors

Interesting that Doug Armstrong was in the pressbox scouting the Flames and Oilers. It’s very interesting. Blues have had a good start to the season while both Edmonton and Calgary have struggled out of the gate.

Also interesting to note, despite being sent down to the AHL, Nikitin and Scrivens have not played a game yet for the Condors. It’s been debunked as Visa issues, but all is quiet right now.
