Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Latest NHL Speculation Feat. Toffoli, Markstrom, Krug, McCann, and More! (9/4/2020)

Today’s NHL news, rumors, and speculation feature the likes of Jacob Markstrom, Zdeno Chara, Matt Murray, Jared McCann, Torey Krug, Tyler Toffoli, and much more!

The News and Rumors

  • Sounds like the Canucks’ net is Thatcher Demko’s now. Rick Dhaliwal (TSN1040) reckons that Jacob Markstrom won’t be returning for game seven of Vancouver’s series with the Golden Knights.

BLH’s Thoughts: Demko has looked like the real deal in these last two starts. He’s dialed in and not giving Vegas anything. Kirk McLean 2.0? He’s been marinating in Vancouver’s system for a while now. Maybe it’s time to pass the torch because Markstrom is going to price himself out of that market. Bob Stauffer (630 CHED) reckons the Leafs will have a lot of time for the Swedish netminder.

  • Zdeno Chara wants to come back for one more year. On Instagram he said, “See you next season, hopefully with a full stadium.”
  • “The one goalie I keep hearing as the Avalanche number one, regardless of the situations of any of the current guys: Matt Murray.” – Adrian Dater
  • The Sharks would like to bring back pending free agent Stefan Noesen and most likely will be saying goodbye to Melker Karlsson.
  • Some folks out of Buffalo are saying there might be a Penguins/Sabres trade that would see Matt Murray and Jared McCann head to the Sabres. No word on the return going to Pittsburgh.

BLH’s Thoughts: I wonder who the Sabres would send to Pittsburgh for those two players? Rasmus Ristolainen? Brandon Montour? Jeff Skinner?

  • TSN1260’s Dustin Nielson said the Oilers have had talks with Pittsburgh regarding Matt Murray.
  • Torey Krug says he won’t be signing a one-year deal. He says his value is at its peak and it’s his time now (to cash in on a big contract).
  • On Sportsnet 590, Chris Johnston said this, “I think Frederik Andersen is preparing as though he won’t be back in Toronto next season. Everything is pointing in that direction.”

BLH’s Thoughts: My feeling is that Ken Holland is going to see how the goalie market pans out a big before diving in. It seems like everybody is in on Matt Murray right now and I can’t see Holland joining in on that bidding war.

Normally, I would consider Torey Krug joining the Oilers but if he’s looking to make bank, it’s probably not going to happen.

Circling back to the goalies, Andersen is only going to be paid $1M in real money next season. That will be a big draw for some clubs looking to keep their payroll down but stay a “cap team”.

  • Tyler Toffoli could demand $5M for five years according to San Jose scribe Kevin Kurz. He also mentioned that the Sharks could be interested and it’s his belief that Toffoli’s stock is falling.

BLH’s Thoughts: If anybody is talking about Toffoli’s stock falling, they’re nuts. He’s been fantastic for Vancouver this post-season, but to Kurz’s salary/term prediction, I could definitely see him making that.

  • It didn’t take long for Todd Reirden to find work. According to Josh Yohe, 30 minutes after getting axed by Washington, the Penguins were on the honker with him.
  • Don Brennan wonders if the Senators might try to acquire Max Domi and reunite him with former Coyotes teammate, Anthony Duclair.

BLH’s Thoughts: What about George Laraque’s trade proposal? Yesterday, he proposed that the Habs send Domi and prized defensive prospect Alexander Romanov to Winnipeg for Patrik Laine.

The Edmonton Oilers Speculation

  • If Adrian Dater is right and the Avs get Matt Murray this off-season, the Oilers should be in on Philip Grubauer. He’d be a perfect partner for Mikko Koskinen.
  • I had a guy tell me that he heard the Oilers were asking about Aaron Ekblad. Made me physically laugh out loud when I read it.
  • Bob Stauffer reckons the Oilers will be looking for a very smart third-line center, someone who can “think” their way around the ice OR someone with a lot of speed. Also, someone who could contribute offensively 5×5.
  • Erik Haula might be one of those guys. Edmonton has wanted to trade for him for a while. I still like the Kyle Turris idea if he gets bought out.
  • Some are bringing up the notion of a trade where the Oilers send the 14th overall pick in this year’s draft to Arizona for Darcy Kuemper. I do not like that idea. I’d rather Edmonton use the pick and take the Russian Carey Price (Yaroslav Askarov) if he was available at the draft.
  • Do you know any teams who’ve traded half or their entire top-pair on defense and survived to talk about it?
  • David Staples recently said on Oilers Now that he thinks if the Oilers are going to trade Oscar Klefbom, it has to be for an upgrade. Mentioned the Chris Pronger trade. Is Oliver Ekman-Larsson that guy? Is it the aforementioned Ekblad?

If you pay attention to who is saying that Jesse Puljujarvi needs to “earn it” within the Edmonton media, what you’ll find is more or less the same person or group of people. Jim Matheson, Mark Spector, Bob Stauffer, etc. You’ll also notice that usually the name Kailer Yamamoto comes up as a person who “earned it” and deserved his immediate role alongside Leon Draisaitl.

Yamamoto seemingly went down to the AHL, dominated for multiple seasons, and was deemed ready to start his NHL career in the top-6. Except he didn’t and he was injured quite a bit but he’s small and gritty and has a very outgoing personality… The old boys really dig that about him.

Now, that’s nothing against Kailer. I love the way he plays but let’s be honest, he didn’t really have to “earn it” in the same manner folks are saying Puljujarvi has to, did he?

Jesse was quiet and shy and it was a pain in the ass for those media guys to get a quote out of him that they could use. He actually went to the AHL and was dominant from the get-go as a very young 18 year old. When those old boys say that Jesse has to get in the guts of the game, he was doing that for Jay Woodcroft’s Condors. When they say he can’t be scoring goals from the perimeter all the time, he wasn’t. When they say he had to get stuck in along the boards and win more battles, do they realize that they were talking about a teenager?

Click the image above to get the new Pulju shirt!

If Pulju returns, I’m under the impression that the general idea is that a player coming to the NHL from dominating a European league must “work” his way back up the lineup, right? So what was so special about Joakim Nygard? He was on McDavid’s wing for the first game of the year this past season… Why didn’t he have to “work” his way up the lineup and prove to everyone he could survive at the NHL level? I think he had three goals by the time his season ended for him… Pretty sure Puljujarvi would’ve scored more than three goals if he was in the lineup this year.

This is obviously some sort of vendetta against Puljujarvi. Maybe a personal one for some of these old boys.

What the Oilers need to do is exactly the opposite as what these near-retired journalists are advising. They need to get him back in the lineup and put him on Connor’s wing. Why? Aside from the 61.5% goal share, McDavid thrives with big-bodied wingers who win puck races and are good along the boards, something Jesse is. He’s a fantastic forechecker that causes turnovers with his long reach, speed, and strength.

This is a great post from Bruce McCurdy that everyone should read. If you need some more statistical evidence to be convinced that JP is the winger for 97, it’s that article.

Jim Matheson believes that Puljujarvi is a 3rd line winger. Perfect. That means he’s an ideal candidate to be one of Connor McDavid’s wingers.

Edmonton Oilers Rumors: Latest NHL Speculation (8/21/2020)

Today’s edition of The Scoring Touch’s Daily Rumors features the Blue Jackets, Rangers, Coyotes, Oilers, and more.

If you missed it, I went over my thoughts on what the Edmonton Oilers should do with their defense recently and included a few names for Oilers fans to look out for in the coming weeks. Check that post out here!

Click the pic and find the NHL94 player from your team!
  • The New Jersey Devils will get Carolina’s 2020 3rd round pick after Sami Vatanen played more than two games in the qualifying round and more than 70% of the Hurricanes’ playoff games. Part of the deadline day trade conditions.

Aaron Portzline, TheAthletic (Q&A):

  • If the Blue Jackets can get a skilled, 1st/2nd line center for one of their goalies, you should expect them to pull the trigger on that kind of trade. But it’s a very risky decision despite the return – Korpisalo looks like he’s the real deal and Merzlikins looks like a Vezina candidate at times. It’s all on the table.
  • The fact that Elvis Merzlikins will be exempt from having to be protected at the Seattle expansion draft will be a very important (and rather appealing) factor for teams that consider trading for him.

BLH’s Thoughts: The Oilers will be looking for a goalie this summer but there’s no way in hell they’ll be giving up one of their top-six forwards (let alone one of the centers) for Merzlikins. Mikko Koskinen has two more years left on his deal and the expectation is that they’ll simply look to find a goalie who can share the net with him for at least one more year.

  • Blue Jackets can deal from positions of strength this summer, and that’s important. They have good trade pieces in Josh Anderson, strong defensive depth (Savard?), and a goalie to work with. Adds it’s gotten very quiet around Anderson and his injury, “the club will say it’s up to him when he returns” – His surgery was March 2nd with a 4-6 month recovery.

BLH’s Thoughts: Anderson has been on Edmonton’s radar for a few years now. Not sure what CBJ would be looking for in return for the big power forward though.

  • CBJ forward prospect Kirill Marchenko is drawing major trade interest from around the league.
  • On the Blue Jackets potentially bringing Sam Gagner back to the club this off-season: “I think that ship has sailed.” Columbus needs to do whatever is necessary to add scoring talent this off-season, and GM Jarmo Kekalainen will certainly try. Mike Hoffman has been mentioned internally as an off-season signing candidate.

BLH’s Thoughts: Depending on who you ask, there’s a strong feeling that Gagner will be returning to Edmonton. They missed his presence in the locker room after he was dealt to Detroit.

  • If the Penguins are trading one of their goalies, it’ll likely be Matt Murray.

BLH’s Thoughts: This is a player I expect the Oilers to inquire about. It sounds like Justin Schultz won’t be returning and they could be in the market for a right-shot defender. Does an Adam Larsson for Murray deal make sense?

Rick Carpiniello, TheAthletic (Q&A):

  • On Henrik Lundqvist: “I think there’s a chance he retires. Much more likely he’s bought out, and signs as a free agent elsewhere.” Doesn’t see the Rangers trading Georgiev. They won’t be in the offer sheet market, and probably not heavy in the free-agent market this off-season.
  • If Ryan Strome signs a one-year extension and has a good season, he could fetch the Rangers a 2nd round pick at the deadline – maybe even a 1st. Pavel Buchnevich could be made available for the right price. Probably a good chance Lias Andersson is (finally) dealt but he needs to find a way to increase his value.

BLH’s Thoughts: I thought that maybe Georgiev could be a goalie the Oilers would go after but then why would the Rangers trade him and keep Lundqvist? It’s in their best interest to keep Georgiev. As for Strome and Buchnevich, they’d be perfect for the Oilers. Would you trade Ryan Nugent Hopkins for both of these players?

  • DeAngelo has become a more tradeable commodity. If he can get them a 2nd line center in a trade who is better than Strome, they’d do it. But that scenario probably won’t happen.

BLH’s Thoughts: DeAngelo is quite the character, maybe too much of one for the Edmonton market. I think if the Oilers were comfortable playing Bear with Klefbom and those two playing the majority of the minutes, DeAngelo would be a really nice 2nd-pair option for them.

    • Calls Mike Milbury a “professional jackass.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Breaking News! Water is wet!

  • Arizona Coyotes CEO Xavier Gutierrez on AZ Sports 98.7: Rick Tocchet has done an incredible job as head coach. We have full confidence in him. We will use the off-season to evaluate our GM position – Steve Sullivan is currently operating as interim GM and will be a candidate for the full-time role.
  • Sticking with the Coyotes: Rick Tocchet says Christian Dvorak was playing through a shoulder injury. Brad Richardson played through a thumb injury that will require off-season surgery. Conor Garland and Nick Schmaltz suffered head injuries.
  • Mark Spector: “After contacting both sides, our conclusion is we expect Puljujarvi to sign an NHL contract and return for Oilers training camp in the fall.”

BLH’s Thoughts: This is all part of the game folks. We’ve been hearing conflicting stories ever since this whole thing got going. So, I would be shocked if we heard something opposite to this at some point in the future OR if he decided to stay in Karpat until their season was over and then joined the Oilers.

  • Bob Stauffer on Oilers NOW (630CHED): Erik Haula will likely be on Edmonton’s radar this off-season, but it’ll come down to price point – thinks EDM might be on the list of the 5-6 possible destinations for Haula’s camp. He’ll be paid as a third-line center.

BLH’s Thoughts: Haula would be a beauty option for 3C in Edmonton. He has a history with James Neal from their time in Vegas and he might be a good player to have on the roster if Puljujarvi does indeed re-join the team. I assume he’ll cost a lot more than what Riley Sheahan was looking for ($1.8M) though…

    • Elliotte Friedman: “I think it’s possible (that Todd Reirden is in trouble). I think a coaching change is something the Washington Capitals are considering.”

BLH’s Thoughts: Friedman also speculated that maybe Bruce Boudreau could return for a second kick at the can.

    • Friedman adds the Oilers are looking at other options with Athanasiou on a new contract (lower AAV) – without giving him a $3M Qualifying Offer.
  • Salim Nadim Valji: There is mutual interest between the Flames and UFA goalie Cam Talbot on a contract extension. No formal talks yet, but they are expected to begin fairly soon.

BLH’s Thoughts: Talbot should do his damnedest to get a multi-year deal done in Calgary. He was excellent for them in the playoffs and very solid during the regular season.

Elliotte Friedman’s Latest Oilers Rumors

The 31 Thoughts podcast dropped last night and in it included a fairly lengthy section on the Edmonton Oilers where co-hosts Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman gave their opinions on what Connor McDavid’s team might do this off-season.

Some of the topics covered:

  • Andreas Athanasiou
  • Edmonton’s lack of scoring support against Chicago
  • Jesse Puljujarvi
  • Holland’s Patience
  • Could the team explore trading Oscar Klefbom or Adam Larsson?
  • Who might come in to replace Mike Smith?

You can listen to the full pod at the end of this post. Skip ahead to 1:01:45-ish to get the Oilers content.

So starting with Andreas Athanasiou. The prevailing thought from both hockey pundits is that he’ll be a cap casualty. The Oilers may very well walk away because they’re afraid of being beat in an arbitration hearing. Friedman did point out that AA could accept the team offer during the arbitration process though but I’m not sure why he’d do that unless he thought he was going to lose.

My guess is they’ll look to move on from him and recoup draft picks.

As for Puljujarvi, according to Marek, he was told that things were very close to being done but Friedman had heard that that wasn’t the case at all. As he stated in his latest post on Sportsnet, he said that the team might’ve thought things were close but the player didn’t.

Another point that was added by Friedman was the Oilers were looking to sign him to make it easier to trade him but Puljujarvi wanted more control over where he was going. Perhaps he wasn’t going to sign unless he knew where he was going.

The two also felt that JP’s peers from his draft class are establishing themselves in the NHL and maybe the best thing for Jesse would be to get over to North America and play.

This is something I agree with. Another year in Finland is not something I would consider best for his development or career trajectory. Had he moved to the KHL or the SHL, then I could understand because there’s an element of increased difficulty there in addition to immersing himself into another country and culture.

Jeff Marek asked about Mike Smith and the pair had pondered earlier in the pod on the number of goalies that are going to hit the market this off-season. It’s possible that some might have to sign for less because there are more chairs than people to sit in them.

Friedman offered up the names of Thomas Greiss and Anton Khudobin as players he could see signing in Edmonton.

I’m not sure about these guys, to be honest. They both make a fair chunk of cash, right? Khudobin ($2.5M) and Greiss ($3,33M) and they’re both 34 years old… They are solid netminders though. I reckon if Holland could get them for closer to $2M/yr, that would be the best-case scenario. Otherwise, perhaps finding a trade to fill the need might just be the way to go.

Finally, there was lots of chatter about what Ken Holland could do with the defense. Friedman noted that he thinks Holland will be patient and that he won’t move his young defenders, specifically naming Darnell Nurse as he’s not an older player and he’s part of the leadership group.

They did mention Oscar Klefbom and Adam Larsson mind you.

The Klefbom/Krug rumor came up and then the bearded wonder mused, “Edmonton and Toronto, to me, look like potentially natural trading partners.” as well as “I really do believe Holland isn’t going to move his young D. So where’s the fit?”

I do concur that it looks like Toronto is going to muscle up this off-season but the targets still have to be able to play.

Now, the Leafs have Morgan Reilly, Jake Muzzin, Travis Dermott, and Rasmus Sandin on their left-side according to Mr. Friedman. That would lead one to believe that Adam Larsson could be the target for Toronto but how would that leave the Oilers?

They’d have Bear, Benning, and Bouchard as their natural right-shot defenders available in addition to Kris Russell and Caleb Jones who can both play their off-side. Would you be comfortable with that set-up going into 2020/21 if Larsson could net the team Andreas Johnsson or Kasperi Kapanen?

In my mind, if the Leafs and Oilers really want to shake things up, make the Nurse/Nylander trade.

It’s my belief that Nurse’s mean streak is slowly losing its luster as he grows older so that part of his game is becoming less impactful and his contribution to the offensive part of the game is predicated upon playing with Connor McDavid primarily. Take him away from 97 and the offense dries up. So what are you left with?

I don’t think that Edmonton needs to get younger on the back-end. In fact, they could benefit from getting older and a veteran left-shot blueliner that excels at defending and puck-moving is a lot easier to find than not.

I’d argue that the Oilers would be a better team, a deeper team if they traded Nurse for Nylander and added Erik Gustafsson to fill in on the 2nd pair. But that’s just me. If the team is worried about a physical presence, don’t trade Larsson and/or sign Derek Engelland…

It really all goes back to Friedman’s belief that Ken Holland won’t be making any panic moves but he will look to improve the netminding and the wings.

It’s going to be an interesting fall for all of the Canadian NHL teams… I talked to a gentleman who covers the Canucks and he agreed. “Very busy!” he added.

#Operation19W Edmonton Oilers: Playoff Predictions AND Would You Make This Trade?

The time has come! The march to Lord Stanley’s cup will begin tomorrow bright and early and I am JACKED! Unfortunately not jacked enough to wake up at 3am and watch the game live, but excited nevertheless.

My friends over on Instagram, Oilers Access, did up this really cool pump-up video below. So please check it out and then head to their Twitter and IG accounts and give them a follow! If you’re a true Oilers fan, you really need do it!

Prediction Time!

I wanna make this quick! So let’s go!

Western Conference Play-Ins

  • EDM/CHI – Oilers in 3

Say what you will about Toews and Kane and all their depth skill/scoring, the return of Corey Crawford, and their record against the Oilers this year. It doesn’t mean anything because their defense is horrid and Edmonton will win any track meet you want to start. Also, Edmonton has the two best centers in the league, their defense is starving, and the goaltending is finally consistent and solid.

  • NSH/ARI – Coyotes in 4

The Predators underachieving forwards and putrid goaltending (sorry Cait!) won’t be able to overcome an upstart Coyotes team lead by Taylor Hall and Clayton Keller. I like Arizona’s chances for this round but not for any longer. We can’t forget about Darcy Kuemper either… Pretty good netminder he is, no?

  • VAN/MIN – Canucks in 4

Pettersson, Boeser, Hughes, and Horvat are going to make quick work of the Wild. If Markstrom can stay healthy that is. Minnesota is another team that was poised to make a run for Alexis Lafreniere before the pause, so how could they possibly be in a position, roster-wise, to make a run for the Cup? Vancouver is the better team, hands down.

  • CGY/WPG – Jets in 3

The Flames will get annihilated by Winnipeg’s forward depth and the goaltending. Calgary simply doesn’t have enough to keep up with the Jets. It would take an epic meltdown from Connor Hellebuyck and monster performances from Gaudreau, Monahan, and Tkachuk for the Flames to even come close.

Seedings: 1. Colorado 2. St.Louis 3. Vegas 4. Dallas

Eastern Conference Play-Ins

  • PIT/MTL – Pittsburgh in 3

I’m a tad skeptical with the Penguins’ goalies and defense but their forward group is one of the deepest in this year’s playoffs. Montreal has Carey Price and we’ve seen hot goaltending eliminate some really good teams in the past, but I can’t really see that being the case this year. Pittsburgh has simply better depth all over the ice and one of the hardest working captains of all-time leading them.

  • CAR/NYR – Rangers in 5

The Hurricanes are missing their top-two defenders to start the series and they’re going up against a team that features Artemi Panarin and Mika Zibanejad, Tony DeAngelo, and Adam Fox. Not to mention Chris Kreider and Kaapo Kakko. I know that Carolina’s forwards are quite deep but when it comes down to brass tacks, New York’s goalies are better I feel. Mrazek/Reimer vs. Shesterkin/Georgiev isn’t even a contest for me and even then there’s Henrik Lundqvist.

  • NYI/FLA – Islanders in 5

Weird series to look at. I think it’s going to be a grind. It’s really hard for me to bet against Sasha Barkov and Aaron Ekblad but I’m not convinced they have the work ethic necessary to put the Islanders away. They’ve got the skill, no doubt about that, but the Islanders have a deeper group of forwards who are willing to block shots in the nude to get the win. Plus, where is Sergei Bobrovsky’s head at? He could take over a series on his own, but he’s been shite all year…

  • TOR/CLB – Blue Jackets in 5

Skill vs. Will baby! Can Torts’ foot soldiers outwork the Maple Leafs’ nuclear line? I say, yes! I still don’t think Toronto’s roster mix is right and I really feel that Columbus’s defense is better too. The pressure is on Toronto here, not the Blue Jackets and I wonder if those young Leafs can overcome that mental pressure. If they can, they could be a very dangerous team in the next round.

Seedings: 1. Washington 2. Tampa 3. Philadelphia 4. Boston

Would You Make This Trade?

Today on Oilers Now, host Bob Stauffer was talking with Uber hockey insider and the next coming of Grizzly Adams, Elliotte Friedman, and Stauffer said this,

“Would you trade Jesse Puljujarvi for Jake Virtanen?”

To which the bearded wonder replied, “Yes.”

So I ask you, would you make that trade? It’s becoming clearer by the day that talks between the Oilers and Puljujarvi’s camp are becoming more frequent as well as more cordial to the point to where we’re most likely just waiting to hear that a contract has been signed.

As for Virtanen, it’s pretty obvious that the Canucks head coach Travis Green and him do not see eye-to-eye. He sat him for Vancouver’s exhibition game against Winnipeg the other night… That’s not good for a player coming off of a year where he put up career-highs (18g 18a).

From Edmonton’s perspective, is this a player that would benefit the team?

Well, here are some of the pros,

  • He’s big, fast, and mean.
  • He’s just entering the prime of his career at 24 years old.
  • He has a laser of a shot as shown by his 18 goals last season.
  • His traditional stats are trending up.
  • He’s not going to cost a lot on his next deal.

Virtanen is an RFA when the season closes and he’s currently on a deal that sets the Canucks back $1.25M per year. Even if he were to double his salary on his next contract, it would still be quite affordable.

What about the other side of the coin with him though?

  • He cares not for the other end of the ice so much.
  • He can be undisciplined at times.
  • He’s not good along the boards or breaking the puck out of his own zone.
  • When played with highly skilled players (Pettersson,Miller), he’s a drag.
  • Off the ice… He’s had a few adventures recently.

To me, he sounds like a young Scottie Upshall. This is a player that is finally finding his way in the league and he may very well peak out at a 40pt middle-six winger.

So you have to ask yourself, how high do you see the ceiling of Jesse Puljujarvi?

For me, I think I’d rather have Puljujarvi but I’ve always been a fan of Virtanen. He’s got a good mix of old school in his game that makes him an enjoyable player to watch. One major problem with him going to Edmonton, for me, though, is that I’m not sure if he can play the LW and at this point, that’s probably where the Oilers are going to have an opening. Jesse can play his off side, no question.

2019/20 Edmonton Oilers Thoughts: The Flames Game, Puljujarvi, and Broberg

Now that we’ve had a couple of days to digest some hockey, what have you thought so far? That Edmonton Oilers/Calgary Flames game was fantastic. It was intense but not out of hand and I know for myself, I was concerned that things could get overly violent given how the season series had gone throughout the season. The amount of violence I witnessed… 100% acceptable.

The broadcast was great! I didn’t notice the lack of fans in the crowd and the synthetic “crowd” noise was palpable. I mean, you kind of wish there were folks in the stands because they add so much more to the experience when goals are scored or big hits are laid out.

That Colby Cave tribute hit me like a tonne of bricks, how about you?

Let’s get the Philip Broberg stuff out of the way first, shall we?

Who makes a save like that in his first-ever NHL game? A bloody gamer, that’s who.

I thought he was fantastic given the circumstances. He started off quite tentative but as the game wore on he really settled in. Some of the pros I found in his game was that he wasn’t phased by Calgary’s attempts to intimidate him physically. Matt Tkachuk was on his ass hard from the get-go and the Swede looked like he hardly noticed him at each confrontation. Even Mikael Backlund gave him a cheap shot late in the game that had “Bro” wondering how the mosquitos got in the arena.

The skating that we’ve all been hearing about for a month, on full display. The way he moved around the ice, he looked like a seasoned vet. He was smooth and rarely caught out of position and the times he did get caught out, it was only momentarily. I’m of the belief that his skating is the reason he could be ahead of the curve a bit with regards to other prospects like Evan Bouchard and William Lagesson. The fact of the matter is, you could count on one hand the number of players, not just defenders, I mean everyone, on this Oilers team who can skate as good as or better than Broberg.

What I didn’t like about his game was that he seemed to be out of position in his own end from time to time and since he’s used to transporting the puck himself, he didn’t move the puck very quickly. That’ll all get worked out though. I think he could’ve been more physically assertive in his own end too, but then again, nobody ever complained about Nik Lidstrom’s lack of physicality.

I’ve read some folks criticizing how the young man pinches and rushes with the puck in addition to comparing him to Darnell Nurse. I don’t agree with those armchair scouting assessments though. While both Nurse and Broberg are fantastic skaters, it’s the Swede who has the higher offensive IQ and ceiling in general.

https://twitter.com/TheOilKnight/status/1287979654909956096

Nurse has never been an offensive defender. He can skate the puck up the ice when there’s room but he’s really lost in the other team’s zone. Most of the time he sends a blind pass into the slot, holds onto it, and goes around the net or gets checked. This season though he’s added the Eberle button hook to his arsenal, which is good. A lot of the points he gets at the NHL level are due to Klefbom being hurt so he gets time on the 1st PP unit and most of his TOI has been with McDavid.

I’ve said this in the past and I’ll say it again, Nurse is a hammer, not a scalpel. And that’s fine because the Oilers need a hammer or three on their blueline. On the other hand, Broberg has the smarts and the skills to be a scalpel.

Check out these highlights above, you didn’t see Nurse making those kinds of plays when he was that age and you don’t see him making them now. Yes, Broberg will most likely tone down the one-man rushes, but as he gets older and stronger and smarter, he’ll develop into a very dangerous “4th forward” option and that’s largely to do with how well of a skater he is. See, he has the ability to catch the opposing forwards on a backcheck because he skates so well should his play break down.

Some people say John Klingberg as a comparable, others say a more skilled Noah Hanifin. Would Jay Bouwmeester be off base? I reckon he’ll be more of a risk-taker in his early years, Karlsson-like, and then morph into a Bouwmeester-style of defender.

Jesse Puljujarvi

Recent reports out of Finland have him showing a much more mature side. “I’ve grown and I see things a bit differently.” is one of the things Pulju has said recently that have folks in Edmonton feeling optimistic that we could see the big Finn back in Edmonton as soon as next season.

What I’m lead to believe is that he could sign with the Oilers but start the year with Karpat and then come on over once the 20/21 NHL season gets going.

Now, in that scenario, if the roster goes unchanged, there’s possibly one spot on the roster open for him and that’s on the LW. With Zack Kassian, Kailer Yamamoto, Josh Archibald, Alex Chiasson, and Patrick Russell (most likely) occupying all of the spots on the RW, there’s nothing available for Jesse there.

As for the left-wing, only Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and James Neal have a spot locked up there. I’m skeptical of Tyler Ennis as well as Andreas Athanasiou. I’m not sure they’ll both be brought back for 20/21. If I had to guess, I’d think Ennis is much more likely to return than AA if the Greek Streak can’t get his mojo back for this playoff run.

I reckon Holland could get a decent draft pick in return for Athanasiou and since Edmonton only has to qualify Puljujarvi, re-signing him and Ennis could cost them under $2M. Then you’d have RNH, Ennis, Pulju (who’s much more suited for Edmonton’s 3rd line than Athanasiou in my opinion), Neal, and Nygard.

The Flames Game

My man, Patrick Russell with 2pts in 33 seconds (I think)! Too bad it wasn’t an official game as The Great Dane is still waiting for his first proper NHL goal. Hopefully, this is just the start of many more.

I thought the Oilers were dominant from the drop of the puck and really toyed with the Flames until the goalie switch. After that, I found the Flames started to pick up the pace and really hold Edmonton’s zone a lot longer. Luckily for the Oilers, both their goalies were on the ball, which is something that could be said for Calgary’s netminders.

What I hope they’ll try to do is stay out of the penalty box. Chicago, as inferior as they may look on paper, do have some players who can put the puck in the net at will. I also hope to see their intensity level increase.

Ethan Bear… Wow! Brian Lawton was saying yesterday on Oilers Now that he thinks out of Evan Bouchard, Philip Broberg, and the young defender of Cree descent, that Bear would be the most likely to be a no.1 defenseman in the NHL. I felt that he was Edmonton’s best defender along with Adam Larsson, who now healthy, is an uncaged beast.

As for the forwards, Connor McDavid was obviously the best, but I thought near every other forward had at least one good highlight throughout the evening. Be that a hit, a scoring chance, or some nifty puckhandling, even Gaetan Haas… I hope his ankles are okay!

Puck Racism

The sales are starting to trickle in with this design and I’m going to spam the hell out of it on my website and the BLH Hockey Instagram because I feel passionate about it and I feel like Hockey is Diversity deserves the proceeds that I’ll be donating to them.

So, please. If you’ve got an extra $20 lying around and you want to do a good thing for good people, click the pic down below and grab a t-shirt, a mask, a onesie, a tank top, or some stickers.

Hockey is Diversity is a German group whose aim is to draw attention to the ethnic diversity in society, which goes beyond the sporting borders in order to sensitize people interculturally. The diversity that has long been regarded as an enrichment in sport as a melting pot of people of different ethnicities, cultures, and religions should also be transferred to society.
